Eric Traut 8a6a039f26 Remove terminal resize reflow flag gates (#27794)
## Why

`terminal_resize_reflow` is now stable and should behave as always on.
Keeping the disabled runtime paths around made the feature look
configurable even though the rollout is complete, and old config could
still suggest there was a supported off mode.

## What Changed

- Marked `terminal_resize_reflow` as `Stage::Removed` while keeping it
default-enabled for compatibility.
- Ignored `[features].terminal_resize_reflow` config entries so stale
`false` settings no longer affect the effective feature set.
- Removed TUI branches that depended on the flag being disabled, so
draw, replay buffering, stream finalization, and resize scheduling all
assume resize reflow is active.
- Simplified resize smoke coverage to exercise the always-on behavior
only.

## Verification

- `just test -p codex-features`
- `just test -p codex-tui resize_reflow`
- `just test -p codex-tui initial_replay_buffer
thread_switch_replay_buffer`

Eric Traut 9e07892253 [3 of 3] Support images in TUI goals (#27510)
## Stack

1. [1 of 3] Support long raw TUI goal objectives - #27508
2. [2 of 3] Support long pasted text in TUI goals - #27509
3. **[3 of 3] Support images in TUI goals** - this PR

## Why

The first two PRs make goal definitions resilient to long text, but
`/goal` still dropped image inputs from the composer. That meant a user
could attach images while defining a goal and the resulting goal
continuation would not have any useful reference to those images.

Goal state still persists only objective text, so image inputs need to
become paths or URLs that the agent can read later.

## What Changed

- Extends TUI `GoalDraft` with local image attachments and remote image
URLs.
- Copies local goal images through the app-server filesystem layer into
the managed goal attachment directory, then rewrites active image
placeholders to file references.
- Appends unplaced local images and remote image URLs to the objective
as referenced image files or URLs.
- Preserves goal image metadata through live `/goal` submission and
queued `/goal` dispatch.

## Verification

- Added goal materialization coverage for local image files and remote
image URLs.
- Added/updated TUI slash-command coverage showing `/goal` drafts
include attached images instead of dropping them.

## Manual Testing

- Attached an image by bracketed-pasting its local path into a live
`/goal` composer. The `[Image #1]` placeholder became a server-host
`image-1.png` reference, copied bytes matched exactly, and no attachment
was written under the TUI's local home.
- Deleted an image placeholder before submitting a small goal and
verified no image was copied.
- Attached PNG and JPEG files to the same goal. Placeholder order was
preserved as `image-1.png` and `image-2.jpg`, and both remote copies
matched their source bytes.
- Tried extensionless, malformed-extension, and
extension/content-mismatched paths; the composer rejected them as image
attachments before goal dispatch rather than creating misleading managed
image files.
- Combined a local image, a large pasted block, and enough raw text to
exceed 4,000 characters. The remote attachment directory contained the
image, paste sidecar, and `goal-objective.md`; all embedded references
used server-host paths and both payloads matched their sources.
- Submitted an image replacement while a goal was active, verified no
image was copied before confirmation, then canceled and confirmed the
attachment count was unchanged.

Eric Traut c0f1ec5afd [2 of 3] Support long pasted text in TUI goals (#27509)
## Stack

1. [1 of 3] Support long raw TUI goal objectives - #27508
2. **[2 of 3] Support long pasted text in TUI goals** - this PR
3. [3 of 3] Support images in TUI goals - #27510

## Why

Large text pasted into the TUI composer is represented as a paste
placeholder plus pending paste metadata. For `/goal`, preserving only
the visible placeholder is not enough: the agent would see a short
placeholder string instead of the actual pasted text, and the long-text
support from the first PR would never see the payload.

The TUI also needs to avoid writing stale sidecar files when a user
pastes a large block and then deletes its placeholder before submitting
the goal.

## What Changed

- Introduces a TUI `GoalDraft` for goal submissions so `/goal`, `/goal
edit`, and queued goal commands can carry objective text plus text
elements and pending paste payloads.
- Materializes active pasted-text placeholders to `pasted-text-N.txt`
files through the app-server filesystem path introduced in #27508.
- Rewrites active paste placeholders in the persisted objective to file
references, while leaving literal placeholder-looking text alone.
- Filters out deleted paste placeholders so otherwise-small goals do not
require `$CODEX_HOME` or remote filesystem writes.
- Preserves pending paste metadata when a `/goal` command is queued
before a thread exists.

## Verification

- Added goal materialization tests for active paste placeholders,
deleted paste placeholders, and whitespace-only paste payloads.
- Added/updated TUI slash-command tests for large pasted text, queued
`/goal` commands before thread start, and queued oversized goal
behavior.

## Manual Testing

- Used real terminal bracketed-paste sequences through a remote TUI
session. A 1,228-byte multiline paste became `pasted-text-1.txt`; its
first/last lines and byte count matched exactly, and the persisted
objective referenced the server-host path.
- Pasted a large block, deleted its placeholder, and submitted a small
replacement objective. No new directory or sidecar file was created.
- Added two same-length large pastes to one goal. The composer
disambiguated their visible placeholders, and materialization preserved
order and contents in `pasted-text-1.txt` and `pasted-text-2.txt`.
- Submitted a whitespace-only large paste and verified the goal was
rejected as empty without writing a file.
- Submitted a pasted-text replacement while another goal was active,
verified no file was written before confirmation, then canceled and
confirmed the original goal remained unchanged.
- Combined a large paste with enough raw text to exceed 4,000 characters
after placeholder rewriting. The paste sidecar and `goal-objective.md`
were created in the same remote attachment directory, and `/goal edit`
restored the rewritten objective with its sidecar reference.

Eric Traut 576f603440 Remove TUI realtime voice support (#27801)
## Why

Removes the realtime audio support from TUI.

## What Changed

- Removed the TUI `/realtime` and realtime `/settings` command paths.
- Deleted TUI voice capture/playback, WebRTC session handling,
audio-device selection UI, and recording-meter code.
- Removed TUI realtime tests and snapshots that covered the deleted
surfaces.
- Dropped the TUI-only `cpal` and `codex-realtime-webrtc` dependencies
and refreshed the Rust/Bazel locks.

Eric Traut 096e5e76a2 Persist update dismissal without cache (#27783)
## Summary

Choosing “Don’t remind me” can silently fail when `version.json`
disappears before dismissal because `dismiss_version` returns success
without writing anything. The same update can then reappear on the next
launch.

Initialize a minimal `VersionInfo` from the selected version when the
cache cannot be read, then persist the dismissal through the existing
write path.

Eric Traut 5b8e3c6d40 Reject transcript backtrack in side conversations (#27791)
## Why

Fixes #27735.

Side conversations are ephemeral forks, and thread rollback currently
requires persisted thread history. The normal backtrack path already
rejected editing previous prompts in side conversations, but
transcript-mode backtrack could still call the rollback path and surface
the core `thread/rollback` failure as a TUI error.

## What changed

- Moved the existing side-conversation edit rejection message into
`app_backtrack.rs` so backtrack rollback code can reuse it.
- Added a side-conversation guard in `apply_backtrack_rollback` so
transcript-mode confirmation is rejected before submitting
`thread/rollback`.

## Verification

Eric Traut a94deb5fa7 Translate non-English issues (#27778)
Issues written in languages other than English, such as #26979, require
manual translation before the development team can triage them.

This adds an `Issue Translator` workflow that uses Codex when an issue
is opened. For non-English reports, it replaces the title with an
English translation, preserves the original body, and posts the
translated body as an idempotent issue comment.

The translation scripts were run manually against non-English issue
content and produced the expected English title and comment output.

Eric Traut 78bab04116 [1 of 3] Support long raw TUI goal objectives (#27508)
## Stack

1. **[1 of 3] Support long raw TUI goal objectives** - this PR
2. [2 of 3] Support long pasted text in TUI goals - #27509
3. [3 of 3] Support images in TUI goals - #27510

## Why

`thread/goal/set` limits persisted objective text to 4000 characters.
The TUI used to reject raw `/goal` objectives above that limit, even
though the client can make them usable by writing the long text to a
file and storing a short objective that points at that file.

This also needs to work for remote app-server sessions: filesystem API
calls must create files on the app-server host, and the stored path must
be meaningful to the agent on that host.

## What Changed

- Adds an app-server-host path helper so TUI code can build paths that
are resolved on the app-server host rather than the TUI host.
- Adds TUI app-server session helpers for `fs/createDirectory`,
`fs/writeFile`, `fs/readFile`, and `fs/remove` that work for embedded
and remote app-server sessions without changing the app-server protocol.
- Materializes oversized raw `/goal` objectives into
`$CODEX_HOME/attachments/<uuid>/goal-objective.md` through the
app-server filesystem APIs, then stores a short, readable objective that
directs the agent to that file.
- Reads managed objective files back for `/goal edit`. Other goal UI
renders the readable stored objective normally, without
managed-file-specific presentation logic.
- Recognizes managed references only when they name the expected
generated file under the app server's reported `$CODEX_HOME`, and cleans
up newly materialized files when goal replacement or setting does not
complete.

## Verification

- Added/updated TUI tests for raw oversized `/goal` submission, large
inline-paste expansion, queued oversized goals, app-facing
materialization before `thread/goal/set`, managed-path validation,
editing, and cleanup.
- Added/updated app-server-client remote coverage for initialized remote
Codex home handling.

## Manual Testing

- Ran the real TUI against a Unix-socket app server with different local
and server `$CODEX_HOME` directories. Oversized goals wrote only under
the server home, and persisted references used the server-canonical path
rather than the TUI path.
- Exercised 3,999-, 4,000-, and 4,001-character raw objectives. The
first two stayed inline without new files; the 4,001-character objective
became a managed objective file.
- Submitted a larger 8,275-character objective, verified its full
contents on the app-server host, and observed the goal continuation open
the referenced server-side file.
- Opened `/goal edit` for a managed objective and verified the full text
was restored through remote `fs/readFile`.
- Submitted an oversized replacement while a goal was active, verified
no file was written before confirmation, then canceled and confirmed
that the existing goal and attachment count were unchanged.

Eric Traut 9d88e299a7 Print TUI session info on fatal exits (#27417)
## Summary

TUI exits printed the resume/session summary only after checking the
exit reason. On fatal exits, both CLI wrappers wrote the error and
called `process::exit(1)` immediately, so an active session that ended
on a fatal error could skip the session information entirely.

This change prints the normal exit summary before returning the fatal
nonzero exit code. If a fatal exit has a known thread id but no
resumable rollout hint, it prints `Session ID: <id>` instead of staying
silent. It also flushes stdout before `process::exit(1)` so the summary
line is not lost during process teardown.

## Implementation

- Apply the fatal-exit ordering fix in both `codex` and standalone
`codex-tui`.
- Keep normal user-requested exit behavior unchanged.
- Preserve the existing resume hint when a rollout is resumable, and use
the raw thread id only as a fatal-exit fallback.

Eric Traut 1e5b87b4d7 Remove TUI legacy Windows sandbox dependency (#27490)
## Why

This is part of an ongoing attempt to eliminate the TUI's direct
dependency on core features. When we moved the TUI to the app server, we
left a `legacy_core` shim that re-exported some remaining core symbols
for the TUI. The intent was to eventually remove all of these.

In this PR, we remove the symbols related to the Windows sandbox.

The change should be behavior-neutral and low risk because it's just
refactoring and removal of code that is now effectively dead.

When working on this PR, I noticed a big existing problem that affects
mixed-platform remoting. For example, if you run the TUI on a Linux box
and remote into a Windows box, the TUI logic doesn't properly handle
Windows sandbox setup properly. Fixing this is beyond the scope of this
PR, but I've left a TODO comment in place so we don't forget.

## What changed

- Move the remaining TUI-specific sandbox level, setup, telemetry, and
read-root helpers into `codex-tui`, calling `codex-windows-sandbox`
directly.
- Remove the Windows sandbox namespace and read-root grant re-exports
from the client-side `legacy_core` facade.
- Remove the dormant pre-elevation prompt fallback guarded by the
permanently enabled `ELEVATED_SANDBOX_NUX_ENABLED` switch. The reachable
elevated and non-elevated setup flows remain unchanged.

Eric Traut ab4ce40042 Trim TUI legacy telemetry and migration dependencies (#27487)
## Why

The TUI still reached through `codex-app-server-client::legacy_core` for
process telemetry setup and personality migration, exposing core-only
details after the TUI moved onto the app-server layer.

This is part of our ongoing efforts to whittle away at the legacy_core
shim that was left over after migrating the TUI to the app server.

This change is just a refactor/rename and should be behavior-neutral and
low risk.

## What changed

- expose OTEL provider construction through the app-server client and
keep the small process/SQLite telemetry adapters local to the TUI
- collapse personality migration results to the config-reload decision
the TUI needs
- remove the `legacy_core::otel_init` and
`legacy_core::personality_migration` subnamespaces

Eric Traut 9d87b771ce Add session delete commands in CLI and TUI (#27476)
## Summary

The app server exposes `thread/delete`, but users cannot invoke it from
the CLI or TUI. Because deletion is irreversible, the user-facing
commands need deliberate confirmation and safer handling of name-based
targets.

- Add `codex delete <SESSION>` with interactive confirmation,
restricting `--force` to UUID targets.
- Resolve exact names across active and archived sessions, including
renamed sessions, and validate prompted UUID targets before
confirmation.
- Add a `/delete` command with a confirmation popup that warns the
current session and its subagent threads will be permanently deleted.

## Manual testing

- Deleted by UUID with `--force` and verified the rollout, session-index
entry, and database row were removed.
- Exercised name-based confirmation for both cancellation and
affirmative deletion; cancellation preserved the session and
confirmation removed it.
- Verified deletion refuses to proceed without `--force`, while
`--force` rejects names, including duplicate names.
- Verified duplicate-name confirmation displays the concrete UUID
selected.
- Deleted an archived session by name.
- Verified an already-missing UUID fails before displaying a
confirmation prompt.
- Exercised `/delete` in the TUI: the popup defaults to No, cancellation
preserves the session, and confirmation deletes the session and exits.
- Verified that `codex delete` works for both archived and non-archived
sessions.

Eric Traut 36fc79c6f4 Remove TUI legacy core test_support dependencies (#27484)
## Why

The TUI now sits on the app-server layer, but
`app-server-client::legacy_core` still exposed core test helpers solely
for TUI tests. We've been whittling away the remaining dependencies.
This is the next step on that journey.

There is no functional change — just a refactor, and this affects only
test code, so it should be low risk.

## What changed

- remove the `legacy_core::test_support` re-export and call
model-manager test helpers directly
- keep the bundled model-preset cache local to TUI test support
- import constraint types directly from `codex-config`
2026-06-10 17:55:49 -07:00
Eric Traut 13468115fc Guard core test subprocess cleanup (#27343)
## Why

Local integration-heavy `codex-core` CLI tests can time out or be
interrupted after spawning `codex exec`. Stopping only the direct child
is not enough: `codex exec` can leave grandchildren behind, including
`python3`/`python3.12` processes that get reparented to PID 1 and keep
running after the test is gone.

This PR fixes that failure mode directly for the affected CLI
integration tests, without changing production code or reducing local
test concurrency.

## What

- Run the `cli_stream` `codex exec` subprocesses through a small private
wrapper in `core/tests/suite/cli_stream.rs`.
- Spawn those subprocesses in their own process group before execution.
- Keep `.output()`-style stdout/stderr capture and the existing
30-second timeout behavior.
- Own each spawned process with a drop guard that kills the whole
process group on success, timeout, panic, or other early return.

The switch from `assert_cmd::Command` to `std::process::Command` is only
for these subprocess launches; `assert_cmd` does not expose a pre-spawn
hook for setting the process group.

## Verification

- `just test -p codex-core --test all responses_mode_stream_cli`

This is limited to core integration tests; it does not change production
`src` code paths.

Eric Traut a19d43a40a Add app-server thread/delete API (#25018)
## Why

Clients can archive and unarchive threads today, but there is no
app-server API for permanently removing a thread. Deletion also needs to
cover the full session tree: deleting a main thread should remove
spawned subagent threads and the related local metadata instead of
leaving orphaned rollout files, goals, or subagent state behind.

## What

- Adds the v2 `thread/delete` request and `thread/deleted` notification,
with the response shape kept consistent with `thread/archive`.
- Implements local hard delete for active and archived rollout files.
- Deletes the requested thread's state DB row as the commit point, then
best-effort cleans associated state including spawned descendants,
goals, spawn edges, logs, dynamic tools, and agent job assignments.
- Updates app-server API docs and generated protocol schema/TypeScript
fixtures.

Eric Traut a1a8807e9d Add app-server background terminal process APIs (#26041)
## Summary

Codex Apps needs app-server as the source of truth for chat-started
background terminals instead of guessing from local process trees.

This PR adds experimental v2 APIs to list and terminate background
terminals for a loaded thread using app-server process ids, so clients
can manage background terminals without local PID discovery.

## Changes

- `thread/backgroundTerminals/list` returns paginated background
terminal records with `itemId`, app-server `processId`, `command`,
`cwd`, nullable `osPid`, nullable `cpuPercent`, and nullable `rssKb`.
- `thread/backgroundTerminals/terminate` terminates one running
background terminal by app-server `processId` and returns whether a
process was terminated.
- Background terminal list and terminate operations use unified-exec
process manager state as their source of truth.

Eric Traut c365b8a4ab Reduce archive rollout lookup CPU (#27276)
## Why

Archiving a thread can spike app-server CPU when the state DB does not
have a usable rollout path. The archive path falls back to locating the
rollout by thread id; because rollout filenames already contain the
UUID, the cheap fallback should find the file directly before invoking
broader file search.

## What Changed

- In `codex-rs/rollout/src/list.rs`, try the exact rollout filename
lookup before `codex-file-search`.
- Keep fuzzy search as the final legacy fallback when no filename match
is found.
- Preserve the legacy fallback when the filename scan hits a traversal
error, so an inaccessible stale subtree does not block lookup elsewhere.

## Verification

- `just test -p codex-rollout`
- `just test -p codex-thread-store`

Eric Traut 8e69d29521 Reduce TUI legacy core dependencies (#26711)
## Why

The TUI still reached through `app-server-client::legacy_core` for
thread-name normalization and project-instruction filename details. In
particular, checking the TUI's local filesystem for `/init` is incorrect
for remote app-server sessions, where the server owns the working
directory and instruction discovery.

## What changed

- use the instruction source paths supplied by the app server to decide
whether `/init` should avoid overwriting project instructions
- keep the small thread-name normalization helper local to the TUI
- remove the now-unused instruction filename constants, utility module,
and other unused `legacy_core` re-exports
- make status helper tests independent of concrete instruction filenames

## Verification

- `just test -p codex-app-server-client`
- `just test -p codex-tui
slash_init_skips_when_project_instructions_are_loaded`
- `just test -p codex-tui` ran 2,799 tests; 2,797 passed and two
unrelated guardian feature-flag tests failed reproducibly in untouched
code

### Manual test

Started an app server over WebSocket with a remote workspace containing
`AGENTS.md`, then connected the TUI using `--remote`. After confirming
`thread/start` returned the file in `instructionSources`, deleted
`AGENTS.md` and ran `/init` in the existing session.

The TUI still reported that project instructions already existed and
skipped `/init`. The trace contained no `turn/start` request, confirming
the decision came from app-server session state rather than a new
client-local filesystem check.

Eric Traut 36bf63a5cf Allow creating a new goal after completion (#26681)
## Why

Users have indicated that they want an agent to be able to create a new
goal for itself after completing the previous goal. Currently, that's
not possible because agents cannot overwrite an existing goal even if
it's complete. This PR removes this limitation and allows `create_goal`
to overwrite an existing goal if it is in the `complete` state.

## What changed

`create_goal` now replaces the existing goal only when its status is
`complete`. The replacement is performed atomically in the goal store,
creates a fresh active goal with reset usage, and continues to reject
creation while any unfinished goal exists. App server clients see a
single `thread/goal/updated` event when the previous goal is replaced
with the new one.

The tool description and error message now reflect these semantics.

## What didn't change

Agents are not allowed to create a new goal (overwrite their existing
goal) if an existing goal is still active, blocked, paused, or in any
other state other than "completed".
2026-06-09 13:23:31 -07:00
Eric Traut c62d79259d Block active goals after terminal turn errors (#26690)
## Why

Terminal turn errors can leave a goal active. Automatic goal
continuation may then repeatedly hit a permanent failure, including
compaction requests rejected with HTTP 400, and consume excessive
tokens.

This PR changes the goal extension to treat all turn-ending errors
(including non-retryable errors and retryable errors that have exceeded
their retry count) as "blocking" for the goal. The downside to this
change is that there are some errors that may eventually succeed (e.g. a
429 due to a service outage), and previously the goal runtime would have
kept the agent going in these situations.

## What changed

- Block the current active goal when a turn ends with an error other
than a usage-limit error.
- Preserve the existing `usage_limited` transition for usage-limit
errors.
- Share progress accounting, guarded state updates, metrics, and event
emission in the goal runtime.

Eric Traut 479a14cf59 [2 of 2] Finish moving goal runtime to extension (#26548)
## Stack

1. [#26547](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/26547) - [1 of 2] Align
goal extension with core behavior
2. [#26548](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/26548) - [2 of 2] Move
goal runtime to extension

## Why

This PR completes the switch of the goal behavior to the
extension-backed runtime and removes the old core goal implementation.

## What Changed

- Installs the goal extension for app-server `ThreadManager` sessions.
- Routes app-server thread goal `get`, `set`, and `clear` through
`GoalService`.
- Uses thread-idle lifecycle emission after goal resume and snapshot
ordering so the extension can decide whether to continue the goal.
- Forwards extension goal updates through a FIFO async app-server
notification path so backpressure does not drop them or reorder updates.
- Keeps review turns from enabling goal runtime behavior.
- Plans extension tools before dynamic tools so built-in goal tool names
keep their old precedence when goals are enabled.
- Removes the old core goal runtime, core goal tool handlers, and core
goal tool specs.
- Updates tests that were coupled to the core-owned goal runtime while
leaving the legacy `<goal_context>` compatibility path in core for old
threads.
- Removes the stale cargo-shear ignore now that `codex-goal-extension`
is used by the workspace.
- Keeps realtime event matching exhaustive after removing the old
goal-specific realtime text path.

## Validation

- Ran manual `/goal` runs in TUI. Validated time accounting matched
wall-clock time and goal lifecycle state transitions.

Eric Traut a8c9530911 [1 of 2] Align goal extension with core behavior (#26547)
## Stack

1. [#26547](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/26547) - [1 of 2] Align
goal extension with core behavior
2. [#26548](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/26548) - [2 of 2] Move
goal runtime to extension

## Why

The goal runtime is moving out of `codex-core` and into
`codex-goal-extension`. This first PR brings the extension back in line
with the current core behavior before the follow-up PR switches
app-server sessions over to the extension, so that review can focus on
ownership and wiring rather than hidden behavior drift.

## What Changed

- Updates the extension `create_goal` and `update_goal` tool
schemas/descriptions to match the current core wording for explicit
token budgets, blocked-goal audits, resumed blocked goals, and
system-owned budget/usage-limit transitions.
- Marks `codex-goal-extension` as the live `/goal` extension crate
rather than an unwired sketch.
- Looks up the live thread before reading goal state for idle
continuation, so continuation setup exits early when no live thread can
accept the automatic turn.

Eric Traut e5af672d73 Render code comment directives in TUI replay (#26554)
## Summary

Resumed Codex App or VS Code review sessions can contain
`::code-comment` directives that the TUI previously displayed verbatim
because only rich clients interpret them.

This change rewrites valid line-start directives into readable Markdown
during assistant-message parsing, using the session working directory
for relative file paths. The fallback is applied consistently to live
messages, replayed transcripts, and resume previews while preserving
malformed directives and existing `::git-*` parsing.

## Before

The TUI exposed the raw client directive:

```text
::code-comment{title="Fix body= parsing" body="Keep role=\"tab\", ::git-stage{cwd=/tmp}, file=, and \n literal." file="/repo/src/app.ts" start=10 end=12 priority="P2"}
```

## After

The same directive is rendered as readable review feedback:

Eric Traut fb0993dd3b Fix /goal usage text for control commands (#26551)
## Why

The TUI's `/goal` usage text only advertised the objective form even
though `/goal clear`, `/goal edit`, `/goal pause`, and `/goal resume`
are implemented. This made the lifecycle controls difficult to discover
and allowed the duplicated help text to drift from actual behavior.

Fixes #25530.

## What changed

- Show the complete `/goal [<objective>|clear|edit|pause|resume]` syntax
in usage messages.
- Share one usage string across slash-command dispatch and goal-related
app messages.
- Add inline snapshot coverage for the control-command usage path.

Eric Traut e781816ead Open Windows app workspaces via deep link (#26500)
## Summary

Fixes #26423.

On Windows, `codex app PATH` detected Codex Desktop and launched the app
shell target, then only printed a manual instruction to open the
workspace. The Desktop app already supports
`codex://threads/new?path=...`, so the CLI can open the requested
workspace directly.

This updates the Windows launcher to normalize the workspace path,
encode it into a `codex://threads/new` deep link, and open that URL when
Codex Desktop is installed. The installer fallback still opens the
Windows installer and prints the workspace path for after installation.

Eric Traut 3acd71fedb Surface TUI config write error causes (#26537)
## Summary

TUI config writes currently wrap app-server failures with local context
like `config/batchWrite failed in TUI`, but several user-visible paths
only render the outer error. That hides the actionable app-server
message, such as validation constraints or read-only `CODEX_HOME`
failures, leaving users with a dead-end diagnostic.

This change adds a small formatter next to the TUI config write helpers
that renders the error source chain, then uses it for model persistence,
feature persistence, project trust, status line writes, hook trust, and
hook enablement.

Eric Traut d8121f93c8 Fix forked thread name inheritance (#26075)
Fixes #25950.

## Why
Forking a renamed thread could fall back to the source thread's
first-prompt title because the fork path did not preserve the source's
explicit name. That meant fork-of-renamed-fork flows could show stale
sidebar labels even though the user had renamed the parent.

## What changed
`thread/fork` now reads the source thread's distinct `name`, normalizes
it, persists it onto materialized forks, and applies it to the returned
API thread. Because the source `name` already excludes first-prompt
pseudo-titles, forks inherit only an explicit user rename instead of
stale generated metadata.

Eric Traut a2a9e767f7 Fix multiline paste in /goal edit (#26047)
Fixes #26025.

## Why
`/goal edit` opens `CustomPromptView`, which did not use the paste-burst
handling that protects the main composer when terminals deliver paste as
rapid key events. On Windows terminals, the first pasted newline could
be treated as Enter-to-submit, truncating the goal edit and leaving the
rest of the paste behind.

## What
This reuses `PasteBurst` in `CustomPromptView` as a lightweight
Enter-suppression detector for paste-like key streams. Characters still
insert directly, explicit paste still goes through the view paste path,
and ordinary text entry still submits on Enter.

Eric Traut ad355d4c96 Fix Windows running thread resume path normalization (#25509)
## Why

Fixes #24944.

On Windows, app-server resume could reject an active running thread when
the requested session path used normal `C:\...` form and the
already-running path used verbatim `\\?\C:\...` form. The paths point at
the same JSONL file, but the resume stale-path guard compared raw
`PathBuf`s, so desktop resume and heartbeat flows could fail with a
mismatched-path error.

## What Changed

- Compare requested and active rollout paths with
`path_utils::paths_match_after_normalization`.
- Extend the existing running-thread mismatched-path test with a
Windows-only same-file resume case before the stale-path rejection.

## Verification

- `just test -p codex-app-server

Eric Traut 8b759b9c18 Disable SQLite intrinsics for Windows x64 releases (#25490)
## Why

Codex 0.135.0 started shipping bundled SQLite 3.51.x via SQLx 0.9.0 to
avoid the older WAL corruption bug fixed by #24728. On Windows x64,
#25367 reports an immediate `STATUS_ILLEGAL_INSTRUCTION` crash on a
Haswell CPU when starting normal Codex paths.

Rather than downgrading SQLite, this keeps the newer bundled SQLite
source and removes SQLite compiler-intrinsic code paths from the Windows
x64 release build.

## What changed

For `x86_64-pc-windows-msvc` release builds, export
`LIBSQLITE3_FLAGS=SQLITE_DISABLE_INTRINSIC` before `cargo build` in:

- `.github/workflows/rust-release.yml`
- `.github/workflows/rust-release-windows.yml`

Other targets keep their current SQLite build flags.

Eric Traut f1d029cf75 Add reasoning-only status surface item (#25504)
Closes #24886.

## Why
Users can configure the TUI status line and terminal title with
`model-with-reasoning`, but issue #24886 asks for a compact
reasoning-only item. That lets a setup show just `default`, `low`,
`medium`, `high`, or `xhigh` without repeating the model name.

## What changed
- Added a `reasoning` item for `/statusline` and `/title` setup flows.
- Rendered the item from the effective reasoning effort, including
collaboration-mode overrides.
- Registered `reasoning` with `codex doctor` so Codex-generated
terminal-title config is not reported as invalid.
- Updated TUI setup snapshots so the picker previews include the new
item.

Eric Traut 6681446477 Reset slash popup selection when filter changes (#25492)
## Summary

Fixes #25295.

The slash-command popup reused its previous `ScrollState` when the
composer filter token changed. After scrolling the full `/` command
list, typing a narrower filter such as `/st` could clamp the stale
selection into the filtered results and highlight the wrong command.

This resets the popup selection and viewport only when the parsed filter
token changes, so normal arrow navigation is preserved while new filters
start at the first match.

Eric Traut f94c49cf46 Use deep links for macOS codex app paths (#25485)
## Why

`codex app [PATH]` is the documented CLI entry point for opening Codex
Desktop on a workspace. Recent desktop builds can focus the app while
failing to honor paths passed as macOS document-open arguments via `open
-a Codex.app <workspace>`, which broke `codex app .` for users. See
#25333; related report: #25166.

The desktop app still supports the explicit
`codex://threads/new?path=...` route, so the CLI should use that
app-owned launch surface instead of depending on folder-open event
delivery.

## What Changed

- Build a `codex://threads/new?path=<workspace>` URL in the macOS app
launcher.
- Pass that URL to `open -a <Codex.app>` instead of passing the
workspace path as a document argument.
- Add coverage that workspace paths needing escaping round-trip through
URL query encoding.

Eric Traut 3e7baa00e4 Add thread archive CLI commands (#25021)
## Problem

Saved threads can already be archived through app-server RPCs, but the
command line did not expose direct archive or unarchive commands.

## Solution

Add `codex archive <thread>` and `codex unarchive <thread>`, resolving
UUIDs or exact thread names before calling the existing `thread/archive`
and `thread/unarchive` RPCs. The commands support scoped remote flags so
callers can target remote app-server endpoints when archiving or
unarchiving threads.

This also fixes a long-standing bug in `codex resume <thread id>` and
`codex fork <thread id>` that I found when testing the new commands.
These operations shouldn't be allowed on archived sessions. They now
fail with an error that tells the user to run `codex unarchive <thread
id>` first.

## Verification

Added app-server coverage for rejecting archived thread resume by id and
checking that the error includes the matching `codex unarchive <thread
id>` command.

Eric Traut 36cd36626d Add /archive slash command (#25027)
## Why

TUI users can archive saved sessions from other surfaces, but there is
no in-session command for archiving the active session. Since archiving
the active session also exits the TUI, the command should ask for
explicit confirmation instead of firing immediately.

I'm also working on [a companion
PR](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/25021) that adds `codex
archive` and `codex unarchive` top-level CLI commands.

## What changed

- Adds a new `/archive` slash command described as `archive this session
and exit`.
- Shows a confirmation dialog with `No, don't archive` selected first
and `Yes, archive and exit` as the explicit action.
- On confirmation, calls the existing `thread/archive` app-server RPC
for the active main session and exits after success.
- Keeps `/archive` disabled while a task is running and unavailable in
side conversations.

## Verification

Added focused TUI coverage for the `/archive` confirmation flow,
disabled-while-task-running behavior, and the `/ar` slash-command popup
snapshot.

Eric Traut 1333f4a689 Align TUI permissions labels with app (#25017)
## Summary

The desktop app now presents the on-request permissions mode as `Ask for
approval` and the manual-review-backed mode as `Approve for me`. The TUI
still exposed older/internal labels like `Default` and `Auto-review`,
which made the same underlying settings look different across clients.

This updates the TUI UX copy to match the app without changing the
underlying default behavior. Fresh threads continue to use the existing
on-request approval mode, now displayed as `Ask for approval`.

The label changes cover `/permissions`, explicit profile permissions
menus, status surfaces, config persistence history/error text, and the
corresponding TUI snapshots.

Eric Traut 522f549922 Fix fs/watch debounce batching (#24716)
## Summary

`fs/watch` was using a local debounce wrapper whose deadline was
initialized once and then reused after the first batch. Once that stale
deadline was in the past, later file changes could bypass the intended
200ms debounce and send noisier `fs/changed` notifications.

This moves the debounce wrapper into `codex-file-watcher` as
`DebouncedWatchReceiver`, resets the debounce deadline for each event
batch, preserves pending paths across cancelled receives, and updates
app-server `fs/watch` to use the shared wrapper.

Eric Traut 56958f2512 Seed prompt history from resumed messages (#24298)
## Why

When the TUI resumes a thread, transcript replay renders prior user
messages but did not seed the composer history. That leaves the resumed
session with empty in-memory prompt history, so pressing Up can fall
through to persisted global history and surface a prompt from another
thread.

The expected behavior is that prompts from the resumed thread are
recalled first, with global history only as a fallback.

## What changed

- Record replayed user messages into the composer history during resume
replay.
- Preserve the existing persisted history format and avoid any startup
history scan.
- Add focused TUI coverage showing replayed prompts are recalled before
persisted global history.

## Validation

- Added `replayed_user_messages_seed_composer_history` in

- `just test -p codex-tui replayed_user_messages_seed_composer_history`

Eric Traut f20904c4d6 TUI config cleanup: plugin marketplace (#24257)
## Why

Plugin and marketplace mutations are applied by the app server, but
several TUI follow-up paths still refreshed state from the TUI host
config. In remote workspace mode, that can leave plugin UI state tied to
stale client-local `config.toml` after the server has already applied
the mutation.

## What

- Stop reloading the TUI host config after app-server-owned plugin,
marketplace, skill, and app mutations.
- Use the same app-server-owned refresh path for local and remote
sessions: ask the app server to reload user config where the running
session needs it, then refetch plugin list/detail state from the app
server.
- Build plugin mention candidates from existing app-server `plugin/list`
and `plugin/read` data in both local and remote sessions instead of
TUI-host plugin config.
- Avoid the duplicate local config reload after `ReloadUserConfig` asks
the app server to reload config.

## Verification

Manually launched a local WebSocket app-server with a temp server
`CODEX_HOME`, launched the TUI with a separate temp host `CODEX_HOME`
and `--remote`, installed a sample plugin from a temp local marketplace
through `/plugins`, and confirmed the TUI refreshed to installed state
while only the server config gained `[plugins."sample@debug"]`. Trace
logs showed the TUI using app-server `plugin/list` and `plugin/read` for
the refresh path.

Eric Traut 414561294c Avoid repeated marketplace upgrades for alternate layouts (#24320)
Fixes #24249.

## Why

Codex already supports discovering marketplaces under both
`.agents/plugins/marketplace.json` and
`.claude-plugin/marketplace.json`. The Git marketplace auto-upgrade
no-op check only looked for the `.agents` layout. That meant an
installed `.claude-plugin` marketplace with matching revision metadata
still looked absent, so plugin list/startup upgrade work could stage and
re-activate the same marketplace again.

That matches the failure shape in #24249: the report called out repeated
marketplace sync/cache refresh logs and a large recently-touched
`.tmp/marketplaces/.staging` directory. This change makes the
auto-upgrade path recognize the installed `.claude-plugin` marketplace
as already current, which should remove that staging/activation feedback
loop.

## What changed

`codex-rs/core-plugins/src/marketplace_upgrade.rs` now uses the existing
supported marketplace manifest discovery helper when deciding whether an
installed Git marketplace is already current. Existing local plugin
source validation is unchanged; `source: "./"` still remains invalid.

## Confidence

Confidence is high that this fixes the repeated marketplace upgrade
path: the old hardcoded layout check was definitely wrong for installed
`.claude-plugin` marketplaces, and the reported staging churn points
directly at that path.

Confidence is not 100% because we do not have a CPU profile or a fully
re-run reporter repro. A malformed marketplace entry can still be logged
as invalid if another caller repeatedly lists plugins; this PR fixes the
staging/upgrade feedback loop that likely made the failure pathological,
not every possible source of repeated marketplace resolution.

Eric Traut 22e45014a2 TUI config cleanup: plugin mentions (#24266)
## Summary

TUI plugin mention refresh still joined app-server plugin inventory with
client-local plugin config, which can diverge once plugin state is owned
by the app server.

This changes the TUI to mirror the GUI client: `plugin/list` is the
autocomplete source, and mention candidates are plugin-level entries
filtered to installed, enabled, and not disabled by admin. The TUI no
longer reads local plugin config or calls `plugin/read` while refreshing
plugin mention candidates.

## API shape and limitations

The current app-server API does not expose effective per-session plugin
capability summaries for mention autocomplete. As in the GUI,
autocomplete now trusts `plugin/list` metadata rather than proving which
plugin capabilities are loaded in the active session.

That avoids stale client-local reads and the cwd/remote detail gaps in
`plugin/read`, but intentionally accepts the same list-level tradeoff as
the app: if `plugin/list` reports a remote plugin before its local
bundle is materialized, the plugin can still appear as a mention
candidate.

Eric Traut 5cd9b8086a Respect resume cwd overrides for idle cached threads (#24528)
Fixes #24186.

## Why
When the TUI resumes a thread through the local app-server daemon with a
selected workspace, `thread/resume` can hit an already-loaded but idle
cached thread. That path previously rejoined the cached `CodexThread`,
so cwd/config overrides in `ThreadResumeParams` were ignored and the
resumed session kept using the old cwd.

## What changed
App-server now treats a loaded-but-idle thread with no subscribers as a
cache entry when resume overrides differ: it unloads that cached thread
and lets the normal resume path rebuild it with the requested
cwd/config. Threads that still have subscribers, or active runtime work,
continue to rejoin the existing loaded thread so in-flight state remains
observable.

The existing thread teardown helper was generalized from
archive-specific cleanup to shared unload cleanup for this path.

Eric Traut b84c5898df tui: include exec sessions in resume list (#24503)
## Why

Fixes #24502.

`codex resume --include-non-interactive` should include sessions created
by `codex exec`, but the TUI was sending no `sourceKinds` filter to
`thread/list` for that mode. `thread/list` treats omitted or empty
`sourceKinds` as interactive-only (`cli`, `vscode`), so exec sessions
were still filtered out.

## What Changed

- Added a shared TUI `resume_source_kinds` helper so both resume lookup
paths always pass explicit `sourceKinds` to `thread/list`.
- Kept the default resume behavior scoped to `cli` and `vscode`.
- Made `--include-non-interactive` include `exec` and `appServer`
sessions, while continuing to exclude subagent and unknown sources.

## Verification

Added focused coverage for both affected TUI request builders:

- `latest_session_lookup_params_can_include_non_interactive_sources`
- `remote_thread_list_params_can_include_non_interactive_sources`

Eric Traut 0f91e869bd Use thread config for TUI MCP inventory (#24532)
## Summary
`/mcp` in the TUI should reflect the current loaded thread, including
project-local MCP servers from that thread config. Before this change,
`mcpServerStatus/list` only read the latest global MCP config, so the
active chat could miss project-local servers.

This adds optional `threadId` to `mcpServerStatus/list`. When present,
app-server resolves the loaded thread and lists MCP status from the
refreshed effective config for that thread; when omitted, existing
global config behavior stays unchanged.

The TUI now sends the active chat thread id for `/mcp` and `/mcp
verbose`, carries that origin through the async inventory result, and
ignores stale completions if the user has switched threads before the
fetch returns. The app-server schemas were regenerated.

## Follow-up
Once this app-server API change lands, the desktop app should make the
same `threadId` plumbing so its MCP inventory also uses the current
thread config.

Eric Traut e8651516f4 Log rollout writer OS errors (#24474)
## Why

Refs #24425.

We have seen rollout JSONL corruption that appears consistent with a
rollout write failing after partially appending a line, followed by a
retry that appends the same item again. The available user logs did not
include the underlying OS error, so it is hard to tell whether the
trigger was `ENOSPC`, quota exhaustion, a filesystem error, or something
else.

This PR adds the missing diagnostics for future reports.

logs.
- Preserve the existing append-only rollout write path; this PR is
diagnostic-only.

Eric Traut a7836744cc Add doctor thread inventory audit (#24305)
## Why

Users have been reporting missing sessions in the app. The app server
thread listing is backed by the SQLite state DB, but the durable source
of truth for a thread still exists on disk as rollout JSONL. When the
state DB is incomplete, doctor should be able to show the mismatch
directly instead of leaving users with a generic state health result.

## What changed

This adds a `threads` doctor check that compares active and archived
rollout files under `CODEX_HOME` with rows in the SQLite `threads`
table. The check reports missing rollout rows, stale DB rows, archive
flag mismatches, duplicate rollout thread IDs, duplicate DB paths,
source/provider summaries, and bounded samples of affected rollout
paths.

It also adds a read-only state audit helper in `codex-rs/state` so
doctor can inspect thread rows without creating, migrating, or repairing
the database.

Eric Traut 613e5149a4 TUI config cleanup: MCP inventory (#24265)
## Summary

The TUI `/mcp` inventory flow should reflect the app server’s MCP status
response. It was also joining those results with the TUI process’s local
`config.mcp_servers`, which can diverge once MCP state is owned by a
remote app server and cause stale local command, URL, status, or
empty-state details to render.

This change removes the local config join from the app-server-backed
inventory renderer. The TUI now renders directly from the existing
`mcpServerStatus/list` payload and treats an empty status response as
the empty MCP inventory state.

## Known limitation

The existing `mcpServerStatus/list` payload does not include
disabled-state or disabled-reason fields. To preserve the current
app-server API, this PR does not try to infer that state from
client-local config. If remote `/mcp` needs to show disabled/reason
details again, that should come from app-server-owned status data in a
follow-up.

Eric Traut bb55736906 TUI config cleanup: trusted projects (#24255)
## Why
TUI onboarding trusted-project persistence should go through the same
app-server config write path as other config mutations. Writing
`config.toml` directly from the trust widget bypasses that layer and can
let onboarding proceed even when the trust decision was not actually
persisted.

## What changed
- Added a TUI config helper that writes the existing project trust
structure through `config/batchWrite`.
- Persists trust decisions as `projects.<project>.trust_level =
"trusted"` using the existing project trust key helper.
- Changed the trust directory widget to only record the user selection;
onboarding performs the app-server write before reporting success.
- Keeps the user on the trust screen and shows an error if app-server
persistence fails.

Eric Traut f05fd0e661 TUI config cleanup: oss_provider (#24254)
## Summary

Manual provider selection during `codex --oss` startup was still
persisting `oss_provider` through the legacy local `config.toml` writer.
That bypasses the app-server-owned config mutation path used by the TUI,
so this routes the write through the app server config API instead.

The net behavior is intentionally narrow: only an interactive picker
selection is persisted. Auto-detected single-running-provider startup
and explicit `--local-provider` startup remain ephemeral, so merely
having one backend running does not make that provider sticky for future
runs.

## What Changed

- Removed the TUI picker’s direct dependency on
`set_default_oss_provider`.
- Had `oss_selection` report whether the returned provider came from the
interactive picker.
- Carried only manually selected providers into startup persistence.
- Wrote `oss_provider` via `config/batchWrite` once the app server
session is available.
- Logged a warning and continued startup if the app-server config write
fails.

## Verification

Manually smoke-tested the real `codex-tui` binary with a temporary
`CODEX_HOME`, pseudo-terminal input, and a fake LM Studio HTTP server:

- Interactive picker selection persisted `oss_provider = "lmstudio"`.
- Non-picker `--local-provider lmstudio` startup did not persist
`oss_provider`.

Eric Traut 5fb5e47767 Respect hook trust bypass during TUI startup (#24317)
Fixes #24093.

## Why

`--dangerously-bypass-hook-trust` is a supported CLI flag intended for
headless or automated runs where enabled hooks should be allowed to run
without requiring persisted trust. In the TUI, startup hook review still
opened whenever hooks looked untrusted, so a launch using the bypass
could block on the interactive "Hooks need review" prompt.

The tricky case is persistent app-server resume: a resume may attach to
an already-running thread, where resume config overrides are ignored. In
that path, hiding the startup review would be wrong because the existing
hook engine may still filter untrusted hooks.

## What Changed

- Startup hook review now skips the prompt only when hook trust bypass
is actually safe for that launch.
- The TUI forwards `bypass_hook_trust` through the app-server request
config for fresh thread start/resume/fork paths, and the app-server
applies it as a runtime-only `ConfigOverrides` value rather than
treating it like a `config.toml` setting.
- Persistent app-server resumes keep the startup review prompt so users
still have a chance to trust hooks when the running thread cannot
receive the bypass override.

## Verification

- Added focused coverage for startup hook review with and without
`bypass_hook_trust`.
- Extended existing TUI/app-server config override tests to cover
forwarding and applying `bypass_hook_trust`.

Eric Traut 913270a689 Show remote connection details in /status (#24420)
## Summary

Fixes #24411.

`/status` currently has no way to show when the TUI is talking to Codex
through a remote transport. That makes embedded local sessions, local
daemon sessions, and true remote sessions look the same, and it hides
the remote server version when debugging connection-specific behavior.

This PR adds a single `Remote` row for non-embedded connections only.
The row shows the sanitized connection address and a dimmed version
parenthetical, preserving the existing status output for embedded local
sessions.

Eric Traut caebff3d66 tui: label compact rate-limit percentages (#24314)
## Summary

The compact TUI status line already renders rate-limit percentages as
remaining capacity, but the text did not say so. That made high-usage
red indicators ambiguous because values like `weekly 6%` could be read
as either used or remaining.

This PR labels the compact rate-limit values explicitly as `left` across
the status line, terminal title, and setup previews.

Eric Traut 6491d1207f Report app-server version in codex doctor (#24311)
## Why

We are seeing cases where users have an old background app-server still
running. `codex doctor` already reports background server state, but
without the running app-server version it is harder to diagnose
behaviors that depend on the daemon build.

## What changed

- Reused the app-server daemon's passive initialize probe through a
narrow `probe_app_server_version` helper.
- Updated the `codex doctor` Background Server section to report
`app-server version: <version>` when the socket is reachable.
- Preserved the not-running OK behavior and report `app-server version:
unavailable (<short error>)` when a socket exists but the passive probe
fails.

Eric Traut 5a6e905994 Fix auto-review permission profile override (#23956)
## Summary
The auto-review runtime sync path was assigning a raw
`PermissionProfile` into `runtime_permission_profile_override`, whose
field now expects `RuntimePermissionProfileOverride`. That broke the TUI
Bazel build.

This changes the assignment to store
`RuntimePermissionProfileOverride::from_config(&self.config)`, matching
the other runtime override paths and preserving the active profile and
network metadata with the permission profile.

Eric Traut e8378c7f0c [3 of 4] tui: route feature and memory toggles through app server (#22915)
## Why
Experimental feature toggles and memory settings can update several
related config values in one interaction. Keeping those writes local in
a remote TUI session is especially dangerous because the UI can diverge
from the app-server config while also leaving behind partially stale
supporting keys.

This is **[3 of 4]** in a stacked series that moves TUI-owned config
mutations onto app-server APIs.

## What changed
- Routed feature flag persistence through app-server batch writes,
including the supporting reviewer and permission updates used by
guardian approval.
- Routed Windows sandbox mode persistence and legacy Windows feature
cleanup through app-server writes.
- Routed memory settings through app-server batch writes and updated the
TUI tests to exercise the embedded app-server path.

## Config keys affected
- `features.<feature_key>`
- `profiles.<profile>.features.<feature_key>`
- `approval_policy`
- `sandbox_mode`
- `approvals_reviewer`
- `windows.sandbox`
- `features.experimental_windows_sandbox`
- `features.elevated_windows_sandbox`
- `features.enable_experimental_windows_sandbox`
- Profile-scoped Windows legacy feature variants under
`profiles.<profile>.features.*`
- `memories.use_memories`
- `memories.generate_memories`
- Profile-scoped memory variants under `profiles.<profile>.memories.*`

## Suggested manual validation
- Connect the TUI to a remote app server, toggle guardian approval on
and off, and confirm the remote config updates
`features.guardian_approval`, reviewer state, approval policy, and
sandbox mode coherently.
- Toggle a default-false experimental feature at the root level, disable
it again, and confirm the key clears instead of lingering as an
unnecessary explicit `false`.
- Change memory settings and confirm the remote config updates both
memory keys while the running TUI reflects the new state.
- On Windows, switch sandbox mode through the TUI and confirm
`windows.sandbox` is updated while the legacy Windows feature keys are
cleared.

Eric Traut 4acb456bfe TUI: skip goal replace prompt for completed goals (#23792)
## Why
Users reported that the replacement confirmation feels unnecessary when
the current thread goal is already complete. In that state, `/goal
<objective>` is starting fresh rather than interrupting active work.

## What changed
`/goal <objective>` now skips the replace confirmation when the existing
goal has `complete` status and uses the existing fresh replacement path.
Goals that are active, paused, blocked, usage-limited, or budget-limited
still require confirmation before being replaced.

Eric Traut b132fec000 Improve /goal error messages for ephemeral sessions (#23796)
## Why

When a user runs `/goal` in a temporary session, the TUI can currently
surface an internal app-server failure such as `thread/goal/get failed
in TUI`. That message is technically true, but it does not explain the
actual constraint: goals require a saved session because goal state is
persisted with the thread.

This is especially confusing when `codex doctor` reports the background
app-server as running in ephemeral mode, since that wording is easy to
conflate with ephemeral thread/session behavior.

## What changed

- Added a TUI-side formatter for thread-goal RPC failures in
`codex-rs/tui/src/app/thread_goal_actions.rs`.
- Detects app-server/core errors that indicate goals are unsupported for
an ephemeral thread/session.
- Replaces the internal RPC failure with a user-facing explanation:

```text
Goals need a saved session. This session is temporary.
Run `codex` to start a saved session, or `codex resume` / `/resume` to reopen one.
```

- Preserves the existing generic failure wording for non-ephemeral goal
errors.

## Verification

- `cargo test -p codex-tui thread_goal_error_message --lib`

I also tried `cargo test -p codex-tui`; it built successfully but the
test runner aborted in an unrelated side-thread stack overflow
(`app::tests::discard_side_thread_removes_agent_navigation_entry`),
which reproduced when run by itself.

Eric Traut 0e9d222178 Make goals feature on by default and no longer experimental (#23732)
## Why

The `goals` feature is ready to be available without requiring users to
opt into experimental features. Keeping it behind the beta flag leaves
persisted thread goals and automatic goal continuation disabled by
default.

This PR also marks the goal-related app server APIs and events as no
longer experimental.

## What changed

- Mark `goals` as `Stage::Stable`.
- Enable `goals` by default in `codex-rs/features/src/lib.rs`.

Eric Traut 7c3cc1db81 Fix thread settings clippy failure (#23724)
## Why

`main` picked up two small Rust build failures after nearby merges:

- #23507 added a real handler for
`ServerNotification::ThreadSettingsUpdated`, but the same variant was
still listed in the ignored-notification match arm. Full Clippy runs
treat the resulting unreachable-pattern warning as an error.
- #23666 added `turn_id` and `truncation_policy` to
`codex_tools::ToolCall`, while the goal extension backend test fixtures
from the goal-extension work still used the old shape. That left
`codex-goal-extension` tests unable to compile once the branches met on
`main`.

## What changed

Removed the duplicate `ThreadSettingsUpdated` match pattern from
`tui/src/chatwidget/protocol.rs`.

Updated the goal extension test `tool_call` helper to populate the new
`ToolCall` fields, and reused that helper for the one direct literal
that still had the old field list.

Eric Traut edc48e4612 Sync TUI thread settings through app server (#23507)
Builds on #23502.

## Why

#23502 adds the app-server `thread/settings/update` API and matching
`thread/settings/updated` notification. The TUI already lets users
change thread-scoped settings such as model, reasoning effort, service
tier, approvals, permissions, personality, and collaboration mode, but
those updates need to flow through the app server so embedded and
connected clients observe the same thread state.

This is a rework (simplification) of PR
https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/22510. It has the same
functionality, but the underlying `thread/settings/update` api is now
simpler in that it no longer returns the effective settings as a
response. Now, clients receive the effective settings only through the
`thread/settings/updated` notification.

## What Changed

This updates the TUI to send `thread/settings/update` whenever those
thread-scoped settings change and to treat the RPC response as the
authoritative acknowledgement. It also routes `thread/settings/updated`
notifications back into cached session state and the visible chat widget
so active and inactive threads stay in sync after app-server-originated
changes.

The implementation is kept to the TUI layer: settings conversion and
merge logic live under `codex-rs/tui/src/app/thread_settings.rs`, with
dispatch/routing hooks in the existing app and chat widget paths.

## Verification

I manually tested using `codex app-server --listen unix://` and then
launching two copies of the TUI that use the same local app server. I
then resumed the same thread on both and verified that changes like plan
mode, fast mode, model, reasoning effort, etc. are reflected "live" in
the second client when modified in the first and vice versa.

Eric Traut 771a4e74ac Add thread/settings/update app-server API (#23502)
## Why

App-server clients need a way to update a thread's next-turn settings
without starting a turn, adding transcript content, or waiting for turn
lifecycle events. This gives settings UI a direct path for durable
thread settings while clients observe the eventual effective state
through a notification.

This is a simplified rework of PR
https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/22509. In particular, it changes
the `thread/settings/update` api to return immediately rather than
waiting and returning the effective (updated) thread settings. This
makes the new api consistent with `turn/start` and greatly reduces the
complexity of the implementation relative to the earlier attempt.

## What Changed

- Adds experimental `thread/settings/update` with partial-update request
fields and an empty acknowledgment response.
- Adds experimental `thread/settings/updated`, carrying full effective
`ThreadSettings` and scoped by `threadId` to subscribed clients for the
affected thread.
- Shares durable settings validation with `turn/start`, including
`sandboxPolicy` plus `permissions` rejection and `serviceTier: null`
clearing.
- Emits the same settings notification when `turn/start` overrides
change the stored effective thread settings.
- Regenerates app-server protocol schema fixtures and updates
`app-server/README.md`.

Eric Traut c0f7e1b99f [2 of 2] Start fresh TUI thread in background (#23176)
## Why

After the terminal-probe work in #23175, fresh-session startup still
waits for `thread/start` before the chat input can become usable. The
chat widget already has the machinery to hold early submissions until a
session is configured, so fresh `thread/start` does not need to stay on
the input-ready hot path.

Refs #16335.

## What

This PR starts fresh app-server threads in a background task, reports
completion through a startup app event, and attaches the primary session
once `thread/start` returns. Resume and fork startup paths remain
synchronous.

## Benchmark

In the local pty startup benchmark, this PR's pre-optimization base
branch, #23175, measured about 152ms median from launch to accepted chat
input. The stacked result measured about 66ms median, for an approximate
additional savings of 85-95ms. For broader context, the original `main`
baseline before either startup optimization was about 250.5ms median. We
also measured Codex 0.117.0 on the same machine at about 64.6ms median,
so the stacked branch is back in the old-startup-time range.

Eric Traut 9dda71dbae Warn on invalid UTF-8 in AGENTS.md files (#23232)
Fixes #23223.

## Why

Malformed AGENTS instructions should not fail silently. The reported
issue had invalid UTF-8 in a global `AGENTS.md`; before this change,
Codex treated that decode failure like a missing file, so the personal
instructions disappeared without a user-visible explanation and the
rollout had no `# AGENTS.md instructions` block.

Project-level AGENTS files already used lossy decoding, so their
instructions still appeared, but invalid bytes were replaced without
telling the user. Global and project AGENTS files should behave
consistently: keep usable instruction text when possible, and surface a
diagnostic when bytes had to be replaced.

## What changed

Global `AGENTS.override.md` and `AGENTS.md` loading now reads bytes and
decodes with replacement characters on invalid UTF-8, matching
project-level AGENTS behavior. Both global and project AGENTS loading
now emit a startup warning when invalid UTF-8 is found, and both keep
the instruction text with invalid byte sequences replaced.

Missing files, non-file candidates, empty files, and the existing
`AGENTS.override.md` before `AGENTS.md` precedence keep their current
behavior.

## How users see it

The warnings flow through the existing startup warning surface.
App-server clients receive config-time startup warnings as
`configWarning` notifications during initialization, and thread startup
emits startup warnings as thread-scoped `warning` notifications.

Global AGENTS invalid UTF-8 warnings can appear on both surfaces.
Project-level AGENTS invalid UTF-8 warnings are discovered while
building thread instructions, so they appear as thread-scoped `warning`
notifications. Clients that render warning notifications in the
conversation surface show the message as a visible diagnostic instead of
silently hiding or altering instructions.

Eric Traut e43a2e297f Fix stale background terminal poll events (#23231)
## Why

Issue #23214 reports `/ps` showing no background terminals while the
status line still says it is waiting for a background terminal. The race
is in core: `write_stdin` can poll a process that exits before the
response returns. The process manager correctly returns `process_id:
None`, but the handler still emitted a `TerminalInteraction` event using
the requested session id, causing clients to believe a dead process was
still being polled.

Fixes #23214.

## What changed

- Suppress `TerminalInteraction` events for empty `write_stdin` polls
once `response.process_id` is `None`.
- Continue emitting interactions for non-empty stdin, even if that input
causes the process to exit before the response returns.
- Extend the unified exec integration test to assert completed empty
polls do not emit terminal interactions.

## Verification

- `cargo test -p codex-core --test all
unified_exec_emits_one_begin_and_one_end_event`
- `cargo test -p codex-core --test all

`cargo test -p codex-core` currently aborts in unrelated
`agent::control::tests::resume_agent_from_rollout_uses_edge_data_when_descendant_metadata_source_is_stale`
with a reproducible stack overflow.

Eric Traut ae10708ae0 [2 of 4] tui: route app and skill enablement through app server (#22914)
## Why
App and skill toggles are user config mutations too. When the TUI is
attached to a remote app server, writing those toggles into the local
`config.toml` makes the UI report success without updating the server
that actually owns the session.

This is **[2 of 4]** in a stacked series that moves TUI-owned config
mutations onto app-server APIs.

## What changed
- Routed app enable/disable persistence through app-server config batch
writes.
- Routed skill enable/disable persistence through `skills/config/write`.
- Avoided refreshing local config from disk after these writes when the
TUI is connected to a remote app server.

## Config keys affected
- `apps.<app_id>.enabled`
- `apps.<app_id>.disabled_reason`
- `[[skills.config]]` entries keyed by `path`, with `enabled = false`
used for persisted disables

## Suggested manual validation
- Connect the TUI to a remote app server, disable an app, reconnect, and
confirm the app remains disabled from remote config rather than local
disk state.
- Re-enable the same app and confirm both `apps.<app_id>.enabled` and
`apps.<app_id>.disabled_reason` are cleared remotely.
- Disable a skill in the manage-skills UI and confirm a remote
`[[skills.config]]` disable entry appears.
- Re-enable that skill and confirm the disable entry is removed and the
effective enabled state updates without relying on local config reloads.

Eric Traut 84d941d07f [1 of 7] Add thread settings to UserInput (#23080)
**Stack position:** [1 of 7]

## Summary

The first three PRs in this stack are a cleanup pass before the actual
thread settings API work.

Today, core has several overlapping "user input" ops: `UserInput`,
`UserInputWithTurnContext`, and `UserTurn`. They differ mostly in how
much next-turn state they carry, which makes the later queued thread
settings update harder to reason about and review.

This PR starts that cleanup by adding the shared
`ThreadSettingsOverrides` payload and allowing `Op::UserInput` to carry
it. Existing variants remain in place here, so this layer is mostly a
behavior-preserving API shape change plus mechanical constructor
updates.

## End State After PR3

By the end of PR3, `Op::UserInput` is the only "user input" core op. It
can carry optional thread settings overrides for callers that need to
update stored defaults with a turn, while callers without updates use
empty settings. `Op::UserInputWithTurnContext` and `Op::UserTurn` are
deleted.

## End State After PR5

By the end of PR5, core will have only two ops for this area:

- `Op::UserInput` for user-input-bearing submissions.
- `Op::ThreadSettings` for settings-only updates.

Eric Traut 55f6bbc667 goals: keep pause transitions explicit (#23088)
## Problem

This addresses several user-reported cases where active goals were
paused even though the user had not explicitly asked for that
transition:

- the guardian approval-review circuit breaker interrupted a turn and
implicitly paused the goal
- a shutdown in one app-server instance could pause a goal while a
second instance was still actively running the same thread
- steering-style interrupts could also pause the goal even though they
are meant to redirect work, not stop the goal lifecycle

The common problem was that core treated `TurnAbortReason::Interrupted`
as an implicit request to transition the persisted goal to `paused`.
That made unrelated interrupt paths mutate goal state as a side effect,
and in the multi-app-server case it allowed stale process teardown to
pause a live goal owned by another running client.

After this change, transitioning a goal to `paused` is always an
explicit action performed by a client or another intentional goal-state
mutation. It is never an implicit transition triggered by generic
interrupt handling.

Refs #22884.

## What changed

- Remove the goal runtime path that paused active goals after
interrupted task aborts.
- Drop the now-unused abort reason from `GoalRuntimeEvent::TaskAborted`.
- Update the focused regression coverage so an interrupted active goal
still accounts usage but remains `active`.

Eric Traut ae03d073b3 TUI: replay in-progress MCP calls as started (#23236)
Fixes #22300.

## Summary
MCP tool calls can appear in thread history while still in progress.
During replay, `handle_thread_item` routed every
`ThreadItem::McpToolCall` to the completion handler, so an in-progress
item with no result or error was rendered as `MCP tool call completed
without a result`.

This updates replay handling to mirror command executions: `InProgress`
MCP calls go through `on_mcp_tool_call_started`, while completed and
failed calls continue through the completion path.

## Validation
- `cargo test -p codex-tui

Eric Traut 53a1f4c29e TUI: route elicitation responses to request thread (#23241)
## Why

Fixes #21894.

When the TUI handles an MCP elicitation, the request payload already
includes the thread that generated the elicitation.
`ChatWidget::handle_elicitation_request_now` was ignoring that value and
using the currently visible chat thread instead. In a multi-session TUI,
that can send `resolve_elicitation` to an older visible thread rather
than the session that owns the pending elicitation, producing
`elicitation request not found` and leaving the prompt unresolved.

## What changed

- Parse `McpServerElicitationRequestParams.thread_id` in the ChatWidget
elicitation handler and use it for app-link, form, fallback approval,
and auto-decline resolution paths.
- Keep the existing visible-thread fallback only for malformed request
payloads with an invalid thread id.
- Update the invalid URL elicitation regression test so the visible
thread and request thread intentionally differ.

Eric TrautandFelipe Coury 4ac3ea20a2 Clarify resume hints for renamed threads (#23234)
Addresses #23181

## Why
Renamed threads can share names, so hints that suggest resuming directly
by name are ambiguous. Issue #23181 asks for the picker hint to include
the thread name and thread ID in parens so users can disambiguate
safely.

## What
- Adds a shared resume hint formatter for named threads: run `codex
resume`, then select `<name> (<thread-id>)`.
- Uses that hint for /rename confirmations, TUI session summaries, and
CLI/TUI exit messages.
- Keeps direct `codex resume <thread-id>` guidance for unnamed threads.

## Verification
Manually verified that message after `/rename` and after `/exit` include
session ID in parens.

Eric Traut 0d344aca9b goal: pause continuation loops on usage limits and blockers (#23094)
Addresses #22833, #22245, #23067

## Why
`/goal` can keep synthesizing turns even when the next turn cannot make
meaningful progress. Hard usage exhaustion can replay failing turns, and
repeated permission or external-resource blockers can keep burning
tokens while waiting for user or system intervention.

## What changed
- Add resumable `blocked` and `usageLimited` goal states. As with
`paused`, goal continuation stops with these states.
- Move to `usageLimited` after usage-limit failures.
- Allow the built-in `update_goal` tool to set `blocked` only under
explicit repeated-impasse guidance. Updated goal continuation prompt to
specify that agent should use `blocked` only when it has made at least
three attempts to get past an impasse.

Most of the files touched by this PR are because of the small app server
protocol update.

## Validation

I manually reproduced a number of situations where an agent can run into
a true impasse and verified that it properly enters `blocked` state. I
then resumed and verified that it once again entered `blocked` state
several turns later if the impasse still exists.

I also manually reproduced the usage-limit condition by creating a
simulated responses API endpoint that returns 429 errors with the
appropriate error message. Verified that the goal runtime properly moves
the goal into `usageLimited` state and TUI UI updates appropriately.
Verified that `/goal resume` resumes (and immediately goes back into
`ussageLImited` state if appropriate).

## Follow-up PRs

Small changes will be needed to the GUI clients to properly handle the
two new states.

Eric Traut adca1b643f [1 of 2] Optimize TUI startup terminal probes (#23175)
## Why

Codex TUI startup still feels slower than 0.117.0 after the app-server
move in 0.118.0. A visible chunk of launch-to-input latency comes from
serial terminal startup probes: cursor position, keyboard enhancement
support, and default foreground/background color queries can each wait
on terminal responses before the first usable frame.

Refs #16335.

## What

This PR batches the terminal startup probes into one bounded probe. It
also reuses the probed cursor position and default colors during TUI
setup, fast-paths the primary-device-attributes fallback as keyboard
enhancement unsupported, and keeps lightweight startup timing logs for
future tuning.

The startup telemetry is intentionally left in production: it records
phase timings for terminal probes and initial-frame scheduling so future
startup regressions can be diagnosed from normal logs rather than
re-adding one-off debug instrumentation.

## Benchmark

In the local pty startup benchmark, the pre-optimization `main` baseline
was about 250.5ms median from launch to accepted chat input. This
probe-only branch measured about 152ms median, for an approximate
savings of 95-100ms.

Eric Traut e734cb5713 Hide ChatGPT usage link for non-OpenAI status (#23127)
Addresses #22778

## Summary

Provider deployments such as Bedrock manage rate limits and billing
outside ChatGPT, so the `/status` link to the ChatGPT usage page is
irrelevant and confusing for those users. Custom providers that are
explicitly configured to use OpenAI/ChatGPT auth still point at
OpenAI-backed usage, so they should keep the link.

## Changes

- Render the ChatGPT usage note only when the configured provider uses
OpenAI auth.
- Keep the note hidden when `/status` displays a provider such as
Bedrock that manages limits elsewhere.
- Add regression coverage for both Bedrock and a custom OpenAI-auth
proxy provider.

## Manual Repro

1. Configure Codex with a non-OpenAI-auth provider, for example
`model_provider = "amazon-bedrock"`.
2. Start the TUI and run `/status`.
3. Confirm the status card shows the custom provider, for example `Model
provider: Amazon Bedrock`, and does not show
`https://chatgpt.com/codex/settings/usage`.
4. Configure a custom provider that proxies to OpenAI and has
OpenAI/ChatGPT auth enabled.
5. Run `/status` again and confirm the ChatGPT usage link appears for
that OpenAI-auth provider.

Eric Traut deb159d9ff Fix TUI stream cleanup after turn errors (#23128)
## Summary

Fixes #22726.

After a Responses stream disconnect, the live TUI could keep accepting
prompts while leaving partially streamed assistant output in its
transient streaming-cell form. That made fenced diffs or SVG/XML-like
content appear as raw transcript text until the user closed the TUI and
resumed the same session, which rebuilt the transcript from saved
history.

This change finalizes the active answer stream before generic
failed-turn cleanup clears the stream controller, so the live transcript
takes the same source-backed markdown consolidation path as a successful
turn.

## Reviewer repro

1. Start a local Codex TUI session.
2. Trigger an assistant turn that streams markdown content, especially a
fenced diff or SVG/XML-like block.
3. Force or encounter a non-retry stream disconnect before the turn
completes.
4. Continue using the same still-open TUI session.
5. Before this fix, the live history can stay raw/plain even though
`codex resume` renders the same session normally.
6. After this fix, the failed-turn path consolidates the partial stream
before rendering the error, so the live TUI keeps normal transcript
rendering.

Eric Traut af6ffb6ebb Support --output-schema for exec resume (#23123)
## Why

`codex exec resume` should have the same structured-output support as
top-level `codex exec`. Without `--output-schema`, multi-turn automation
has to choose between resumed session context and schema-validated JSON
output.

Fixes #22998.

## What changed

- Marked `--output-schema` as a global `codex exec` flag so it can be
passed after `resume`.
- Reused the existing output schema plumbing so resumed turns attach the
schema to the final response request while preserving session context.

Eric Traut fce10e009d tui: keep cleared Fast tier from reappearing after side-thread resume (#23121)
## Why

After turning Fast mode off in the TUI, returning from a side thread
could make `Fast` appear again in the main chat widget. The opt-out
itself was still persisted; the display was being rebuilt from stale
cached `ThreadSessionState` data, which made it look like Fast had been
re-enabled.

Fixes #23104.

## What changed

- Keep the active thread's cached `service_tier` in sync whenever the
user persists a service-tier selection.
- Update both the primary-thread snapshot and the thread event store so
restored TUI state reflects the current tier.
- Add a focused regression test for clearing a cached Fast tier.

## Manual repro

1. Start a TUI session where `Fast` is enabled by default.
2. Run `/fast` and turn Fast mode off. Confirm `Fast` disappears from
the chat widget display.
3. Re-enter thread navigation via either path:
   - Run `/side test`, then return to the main thread.
   - Run `/agent`, enter a child thread, then return to the main thread.
4. Before this fix, `Fast` reappears in the main chat widget display
even though the opt-out was already persisted.

Eric Traut 0445b290fe [1 of 4] tui: route primary settings writes through app server (#22913)
## Why
The TUI can run against a remote app server, but several high-traffic
settings still persisted by editing the local config file. That sends
remote sessions' preference writes to the wrong machine and lets local
disk state drift from the app-server-owned config.

This is **[1 of 4]** in a stacked series that moves TUI-owned config
mutations onto app-server APIs.

## What changed
- Added a small TUI helper for typed app-server config writes.
- Routed primary interactive preference writes through
`config/batchWrite`.
- Preserved existing profile scoping for settings that already support
`profiles.<profile>.*` overrides.

## Config keys affected
- `model`
- `model_reasoning_effort`
- `personality`
- `service_tier`
- `plan_mode_reasoning_effort`
- `approvals_reviewer`
- `notice.fast_default_opt_out`
- Profile-scoped equivalents under `profiles.<profile>.*`

## Suggested manual validation
- Connect the TUI to a remote app server, change `model` and
`model_reasoning_effort`, reconnect, and confirm the remote config
retained both values while the local `config.toml` did not change.
- Change `personality`, `plan_mode_reasoning_effort`, and the explicit
auto-review selection, then reconnect and confirm those choices persist
through the app server.
- Clear the service tier back to default and confirm `service_tier` is
cleared while `notice.fast_default_opt_out = true` is persisted
remotely.
- Repeat one setting change with an active profile and confirm the write
lands under `profiles.<profile>.*`.

Eric Traut 941e7f825e Improve goal completion usage reporting (#22907)
## Why

Goal completion follow-up turns currently receive a preformatted English
usage sentence such as `time used: 2586 seconds`. That nudges the model
to echo an awkward raw seconds count in the final reply, even though the
tool result already exposes structured usage fields like
`goal.timeUsedSeconds`, `goal.tokensUsed`, and `goal.tokenBudget`.

## What changed

- Replace the preformatted completion usage sentence with guidance to
read the structured goal fields from the tool result.
- Preserve token-budget reporting while allowing the model to phrase
elapsed time in a concise, human-friendly way that fits the response
language.
- Update core coverage for both the generated completion guidance and
the session flow that forwards it back to the model.

## Verification

Previously, it would have output a final message indicating that it
"worked for 303 seconds". Now it shows the following:

<img width="286" height="35" alt="image"

Eric Traut 7fa0007ea8 tui: split remaining composer draft and footer state (#22656)
## Why

[#22581](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/22581) started separating
the chat composer’s responsibilities, but `ChatComposer` still owned the
remaining editable draft state alongside footer/status presentation
state. This follow-up makes those ownership lines explicit so future
composer changes have a smaller blast radius and `BottomPane` does not
need to keep exposing scattered draft getters.

This is just a refactor. No functional or behavioral changes are
intended.

## What changed

- Move the remaining editable composer state into
`bottom_pane/chat_composer/draft_state.rs`.
- Move footer and status-row presentation state into
`bottom_pane/chat_composer/footer_state.rs`.
- Add an internal `ComposerDraftSnapshot` for restore flows, replacing

Eric Traut e6a7368810 TUI: split history cells into focused modules (#22704)
## Why

`codex-rs/tui/src/history_cell.rs` had become the dumping ground for
transcript rendering: the shared trait, common helpers, and the concrete
cells for messages, plans, MCP/search, notices, patches, approvals,
session chrome, and separators all lived together. That made small
transcript changes require reopening a very large file and made
ownership less obvious.

## What changed

- Replaced the monolithic `history_cell.rs` with a `history_cell/`
module tree organized by concern.
- Kept the existing `crate::history_cell::*` surface stable through
re-exports in `history_cell/mod.rs`.
- Moved the existing render coverage into `history_cell/tests.rs`.

## Reviewer notes

- This PR is intentionally mechanical in mature — existing code and
tests moving into files that match their concern.
- The snapshot files under `codex-rs/tui/src/history_cell/snapshots/`
moved with the extracted test module. `insta` resolves these unnamed
snapshots relative to the source file that declares them, so this is
path churn only; snapshot contents were not updated.
- The small non-mechanical seam edits are limited to split fallout:
sibling-module visibility for shared cell containers, moving
approval-specific exec-snippet helpers beside approvals, fixing the
separator module path, and keeping a couple of existing test helpers
reachable after extraction.

Eric Traut d1235a0a78 Prevent Esc from dismissing or rewinding /side (#22710)
Addresses #22599

## Why
`/side` currently lets `Esc` return to the parent thread. Multiple users
reported that this collides with queued-steer UI that also advertises
`Esc`, so a timing-sensitive keypress can dismiss an ephemeral side chat
instead of sending the queued prompt.

After removing that dismissal shortcut, the same `Esc` path could fall
through to main-thread backtrack/edit-previous handling, which is not
valid for ephemeral side conversations. This keeps `/side` out of both
global `Esc` behaviors.

## What changed
- Remove `Esc` from the `/side` return shortcut matcher while keeping
the existing `Ctrl+C` and `Ctrl+D` behavior.
- Update side-conversation hints and blocked-command copy to advertise
`Ctrl+C` as the return shortcut.
- Rename the reserved `Esc` keymap label to describe backtracking only.
- Block backtrack/edit-previous handling while a side conversation is
active and report `Editing previous prompts is unavailable in side
conversations.` when that path would have fired.
- Keep composer-owned `Esc` behavior, such as Vim insert-mode escape,
routed locally.
- Refresh focused shortcut assertions and TUI snapshots for the updated
footer and new side-conversation error message.

## Verification
Manually tested `/side` use cases and `Esc`, `Ctrl+C`, `Ctrl+D`.

Eric Traut 3a23e87e20 tui: recover local state db startup failures (#22734)
## Why

#22580 made app-server startup fail when the local SQLite state database
cannot be initialized. Embedded/local TUI startup still continued on the
permissive path, which left the CLI inconsistent and could hide a real
startup problem behind unrelated UI. This brings local TUI startup onto
the same fail-closed behavior while keeping recovery humane for the two
failure modes we are seeing in practice: damaged database files and
startup stalls caused by another process holding the database write
lock.

## What changed

- Embedded TUI startup now uses `state_db::try_init(...)` and returns a
typed `LocalStateDbStartupError` that preserves the affected database
path plus the underlying failure detail.
- CLI startup handles that failure before entering the interactive TUI:
- lock-contention failures tell users to quit other Codex processes and
try again
- failures consistent with a broken local database offer a safe repair
that backs up Codex-owned SQLite files, rebuilds local database files,
and retries startup once
- declined or unsuccessful repairs print concise guidance plus technical
details
- Shared startup error plumbing lives in `tui/src/startup_error.rs`,
while CLI recovery policy and focused recovery tests live in
`cli/src/state_db_recovery.rs`.

## Verification

- `cargo test -p codex-tui
embedded_state_db_failure_is_typed_for_cli_recovery`
- `cargo test -p codex-cli state_db_recovery`
- Manually held an exclusive SQLite lock on `state_5.sqlite` and
confirmed the CLI shows lock-specific guidance without offering repair.
- Manually exercised the repair path with a deliberately invalid
`sqlite_home` and confirmed it backs up the blocking path and resumes
startup.

Eric Traut 3dc278b68e Trim TUI legacy core helper usage (#22695)
## Why

The TUI still had a few low-risk dependencies flowing through the
transitional `legacy_core` namespace after the app-server migration.
These helpers either already have clearer non-core owners or are
presentation logic that does not belong in `codex-core`, so moving them
out reduces the compatibility surface without changing product behavior.

## What changed

This is a low-risk change, almost completely mechanical in nature.

- Route TUI Codex-home lookup through `codex-utils-home-dir`, use
`Config::log_dir` directly, and call
`codex-sandboxing::system_bwrap_warning` without going through
`legacy_core`.
- Move shared `codex resume` hint formatting from `codex-core` into
`codex-utils-cli`.
- Update CLI and TUI call sites to use the shared CLI utility, and keep
the resume-command behavior covered by tests in its new home.

Eric Traut a5040d0b39 tui: split composer attachment and popup state (#22581)
## Why

`ChatComposer` currently owns text editing alongside attachment
bookkeeping and popup lifecycle state, while `BottomPane` still triggers
a couple of popup resyncs after composer methods that already do that
work internally. That blurs the ownership boundary and makes the
composer harder to simplify safely.

This PR is part 1 of a two-part cleanup. It peels off the composer state
that can move cleanly on its own, so the follow-up can tackle the
heavier draft/editing boundary without mixing every concern into one
diff.

## What changed

- Move local and remote image bookkeeping, placeholder relabeling, and
remote-image keyboard selection into `AttachmentState`.
- Move active-popup and popup-dismissal/query bookkeeping into
`PopupState`.
- Update composer and history-search paths to use those state owners
directly.
- Remove redundant `BottomPane` popup synchronization after paste
handling and `insert_str`.

## Part 2

The follow-up PR will finish the cleanup around the remaining composer
boundary: split out the draft/editing-oriented state and footer/status
presentation concerns that still live in `ChatComposer`, then revisit
the leftover `BottomPane` pass-throughs once those ownership lines are
explicit. The goal is for `ChatComposer` to coordinate a few focused
collaborators instead of continuing to be the landing zone for every
input-path concern.

## Verification

Eric Traut 6a225e4005 Defer startup NUX impressions until startup succeeds (#22587)
## Why

This is a follow-up to #22573. This problem was surfaced in a code
review comment that I missed before merging the previous PR.

Fresh-session startup could prepare a model-availability NUX before
`app_server.start_thread(&config)` completed. If thread startup then
failed, the TUI never rendered the tooltip, but
`prepare_startup_tooltip_override(...)` had already persisted one of the
limited impressions.

## What Changed

- Move startup tooltip preparation inside the fresh-thread startup
branch, after `start_thread(...)` succeeds.
- Keep resume/fork paths unchanged.
- Remove the now-redundant
`should_prepare_startup_tooltip_override(...)` helper and its gate test.

Eric Traut 35451ba79c Simplify TUI startup test coverage (#22573)
## Why

The TUI startup test surface had drifted into expensive, brittle
coverage:

- `tui/tests/suite/no_panic_on_startup.rs` was already ignored as flaky
while still spawning a PTY to exercise malformed exec-policy rules.
- `tui/tests/suite/model_availability_nux.rs` used a seeded session,
cursor-query spoofing, and repeated interrupts to verify a narrow
resume-path invariant.
- `app/tests.rs` had started accumulating unrelated startup and summary
coverage in one flat module even after the surrounding app code was
split into feature modules.

This keeps those behaviors covered while making the tests cheaper to
understand and less likely to rot. It also preserves the malformed-rules
regression from #8803 without requiring a terminal orchestration test.

## What changed

- Replaced the malformed `rules` startup PTY case with a direct
exec-policy loader regression:

[`rules_path_file_returns_read_dir_error`](https://github.com/openai/codex/blob/21b6b5622f18b8cac0ea41fd083b3106778d9ffc/codex-rs/core/src/exec_policy_tests.rs#L264-L284)
- Made the existing fresh-session-only startup tooltip behavior explicit
with

[`should_prepare_startup_tooltip_override`](https://github.com/openai/codex/blob/21b6b5622f18b8cac0ea41fd083b3106778d9ffc/codex-rs/tui/src/app/thread_routing.rs#L1272-L1279),
then added focused coverage for the resume/fork gate and the persisted
NUX counter.
- Split startup and session-summary coverage out of
`tui/src/app/tests.rs` into dedicated modules so the test layout better
mirrors the current app architecture.
- Converted one single-message goal validation snapshot into semantic
assertions where layout was not the behavior under test.
- Removed the two PTY-heavy suite files that the narrower tests now
supersede.

Eric Traut 3c3e18c222 Refactor chatwidget orchestration into modules (phase 5) (#22537)
## Why

`chatwidget.rs` is still carrying too many unrelated responsibilities in
one file. #22269 started a five-phase cleanup to move coherent behavior
domains into focused modules while keeping `chatwidget.rs` as the
composition layer. #22407 completed phase 2 by extracting input and
submission flow, #22433 completed phase 3 by extracting protocol,
replay, streaming, and tool lifecycle handling, and #22518 completed
phase 4 by extracting settings, popups, and status surfaces.

This PR is phase 5. It cleans up the remaining constructor and
orchestration code now that the larger behavior domains have moved out,
leaving `chatwidget.rs` much closer to the composition layer the cleanup
was aiming for. This is once again a mechanical movement of existing
functions. No functional changes.

## What Changed

- Added focused modules for widget construction and initial wiring,
session configuration flow, key/composer interaction routing, review
popup orchestration, desktop notification coalescing, and render
composition.
- Moved the remaining constructor, session setup, interaction,
notification, review picker, and rendering helpers out of
`codex-rs/tui/src/chatwidget.rs`.
- Preserved the existing startup/session behavior, keyboard handling,
review picker flow, notification priority behavior, and render
composition while shrinking the central widget module substantially.
- Left `codex-rs/tui/src/chatwidget.rs` as the registration and
composition surface for the extracted behavior modules.

## Cleanup Phases

The five-phase cleanup plan from #22269 is:

1. Phase 1: mechanical helper and state moves. Completed in #22269.
2. Phase 2: extract input and submission flow, including queued user
messages, shell prompt submission, pending steer restoration, and thread
input snapshot/restore behavior. Completed in #22407.
3. Phase 3: extract protocol, replay, streaming, and tool lifecycle
handling, while preserving active-cell grouping, transcript
invalidation, interrupt deferral, and final-message separator behavior.
Completed in #22433.
4. Phase 4: extract settings, popups, and status surfaces, including
model/reasoning/collaboration/personality popups, permission prompts,
rate-limit UI, and connectors helpers. Completed in #22518.
5. Phase 5: clean up the remaining constructor and orchestration code
once the larger behavior domains have moved out, leaving `chatwidget.rs`
as the composition layer. This PR.

## Verification

- `cargo check -p codex-tui`
- `cargo test -p codex-tui chatwidget::tests::popups_and_settings`
- `cargo test -p codex-tui chatwidget::tests::plan_mode`
- `cargo test -p codex-tui chatwidget::tests::review_mode`
- `cargo test -p codex-tui chatwidget::tests::status_and_layout`

`cargo test -p codex-tui` also compiles and begins running, but aborts
in the unchanged app-side test
`app::tests::discard_side_thread_keeps_local_state_when_server_close_fails`
with the same reproducible stack overflow noted in phase 4.

Eric Traut efdcbba053 Remove resurrected /collab slash command (#22535)
## Summary
`/collab` was intentionally removed in
[#12012](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/12012), but the
TUI/app-server migration accidentally brought that slash-command path
back. This restores the earlier product decision so the TUI no longer
advertises or dispatches `/collab`. This command was redundant because
it did the same thing as `/plan` but in a less-intuitive way.

## What Changed
- Remove `SlashCommand::Collab` from the TUI slash-command surface.
- Delete the picker and app-event plumbing that only existed to service
`/collab`.
- Remove obsolete TUI test coverage for the deleted picker flow.

Eric Traut 1ae811ddb2 Refactor chatwidget settings surfaces into modules (phase 4) (#22518)
## Why

`chatwidget.rs` is still carrying too many unrelated responsibilities in
one file. #22269 started a five-phase cleanup to move coherent behavior
domains into focused modules while keeping `chatwidget.rs` as the
composition layer. #22407 completed phase 2 by extracting input and
submission flow, and #22433 completed phase 3 by extracting protocol,
replay, streaming, and tool lifecycle handling.

This PR is phase 4. It keeps moving high-churn UI coordination out of
the central widget by extracting settings, popups, and status surfaces
without changing the visible behavior those flows already provide. This
is once again a mechanical movement of existing functions. No functional
changes.

## What Changed

- Added focused modules for runtime settings/model coordination,
model/reasoning/collaboration popups,
settings/personality/theme/audio/experimental popups, permission
prompts, status setup/output controls, and Windows sandbox prompt flows.
- Moved the remaining rate-limit nudge/status helpers and connectors
popup/loading/update helpers into their existing focused modules.
- Preserved the existing picker flows, approval behavior, status/title
setup previews, rate-limit notices, and connectors/app list behavior
while shrinking `chatwidget.rs` back toward orchestration.
- Left `codex-rs/tui/src/chatwidget.rs` as the registration and
composition surface for these extracted behaviors.

Eric Traut 8fe0ecb045 Refactor chatwidget protocol flows into modules (phase 3) (#22433)
## Why

`chatwidget.rs` is still carrying too many unrelated responsibilities in
one file. #22269 started a five-phase cleanup to move coherent behavior
domains into focused modules while keeping `chatwidget.rs` as the
composition layer. #22407 completed phase 2 by extracting input and
submission flow.

This PR is phase 3. It keeps moving high-churn event handling out of the
central widget by extracting protocol, replay, streaming, and tool
lifecycle handling without changing the visible behavior those flows
already provide. This is once again just a mechanical movement of
existing functions. No functional changes.

## What Changed

- Added focused modules for protocol request dispatch, replay rendering,
assistant/plan/reasoning streaming, turn runtime bookkeeping, hook
lifecycle handling, command lifecycle handling, tool lifecycle
rendering, and interactive tool request prompts.
- Kept active-cell grouping, transcript invalidation, interrupt
deferral, and final-message separator behavior in the same flows, just
moved into smaller files.
- Added module header comments to the new files so the ownership
boundaries are explicit.
- Left `codex-rs/tui/src/chatwidget.rs` as the registration and
orchestration surface for these extracted behaviors.

Eric Traut 2630a6ca35 Refactor chatwidget input flow into modules (#22407)
## Why

`chatwidget.rs` is still carrying too many unrelated responsibilities in
one file. #22269 started a five-phase effort to move coherent behavior
domains into focused modules while keeping `chatwidget.rs` as the
composition layer.

This PR is phase 2 of that plan. It extracts the input and submission
flow as a mechanical move before the later protocol, popup/status, and
constructor/orchestration phases.

## What Changed

- Added `codex-rs/tui/src/chatwidget/input_flow.rs` for composer input
results, queued user-message draining, pending-input previews, and
mode-specific submission entry points.
- Added `codex-rs/tui/src/chatwidget/input_submission.rs` for
user-message construction/submission, shell prompt submission,
structured mention resolution, and blocked image draft restoration.
- Added `codex-rs/tui/src/chatwidget/input_restore.rs` for
initial-message submission, pending steer restoration after interrupts,
and thread input snapshot/restore behavior.
- Registered the new modules and removed the moved `ChatWidget` impl
methods from `codex-rs/tui/src/chatwidget.rs`.

## Follow-On Refactor Phases

The five-phase plan from #22269 is:

- Phase 1: mechanical helper and state moves. Completed in #22269.
- Phase 2: extract input and submission flow, including queued user
messages, shell prompt submission, pending steer restoration, and thread
input snapshot/restore behavior. This PR.
- Phase 3: extract protocol, replay, streaming, and tool lifecycle
handling, while preserving active-cell grouping, transcript
invalidation, interrupt deferral, and final-message separator behavior.

model/reasoning/collaboration/personality popups, permission prompts,
rate-limit UI, and connectors helpers.
- Phase 5: clean up the remaining constructor and orchestration code

Eric Traut ad572709ab Add support for UDS in codex --remote (#22414)
## Why

Added support for UDS connections in `codex --remote`.

TUI also now connects to local app-server using UDS by default if it is
running and set to listen to UDS connection.

## What Changed

- Introduced `RemoteAppServerEndpoint` with `WebSocket` and `UnixSocket`
variants.
- Reused the existing JSON-RPC-over-WebSocket protocol over either a TCP
WebSocket stream or a UDS stream.
- Updated `codex --remote` to accept `ws://host:port`,
`wss://host:port`, `unix://`, and `unix://PATH`.
- Kept `--remote-auth-token-env` restricted to `wss://` and loopback
`ws://` remotes.
- Added a fast TUI startup probe for the default daemon socket, falling
back to the embedded app server when the daemon is absent or
unresponsive.

## Verification

- Manually verified that the updated remote flow works.
- Added coverage for UDS remote round trips, WebSocket auth headers,
auth-token transport policy, remote address parsing, and missing-daemon
fallback.
- Ran focused remote test coverage locally.

Eric Traut 51bfb5f3b1 Restore app-server websocket listener with auth guard (#22404)
## Why
PR #21843 removed the TCP websocket app-server listener, but that also
removed functionality that still needs to exist. Restoring it as-is
would reopen the old remote exposure problem, so this keeps the restored
listener while making remote and non-loopback usage require explicit
auth.

## What Changed
- Mostly reverts #21843 and reapplies the small merge-conflict
resolutions needed on top of current main.
- Restores ws://IP:PORT parsing, the app-server TCP websocket acceptor,
websocket auth CLI flags, and the associated tests.
- The only intentional behavior change from the restored code is that
non-loopback websocket listeners now fail startup unless --ws-auth
capability-token or --ws-auth signed-bearer-token is configured.
Loopback listeners remain available for local and SSH-forwarding
workflows.

## Reviewer Focus
Please focus review on the small auth-enforcement delta layered on top
of the revert:

- codex-rs/app-server-transport/src/transport/websocket.rs:
start_websocket_acceptor now rejects unauthenticated non-loopback
websocket binds before accepting connections.
- codex-rs/app-server-transport/src/transport/auth.rs: helper logic
classifies unauthenticated non-loopback listeners.
- codex-rs/app-server/tests/suite/v2/connection_handling_websocket.rs:
tests cover unauthenticated ws://0.0.0.0 startup rejection and
authenticated non-loopback capability-token startup.

Everything else is intended to be revert/merge-conflict restoration
rather than new product behavior.

## Verification

- Manually verified that TUI remoting is restored and that auth is
enforced for non-localhost urls.
