Eric Traut 695961ee88 Enable pets in fullscreen tmux panes with Kitty passthrough (#59580)
## Why

Pets were unavailable in tmux even when fullscreen Codex could render Kitty images through passthrough.

## What changed

- Enable pet images and picker previews in fullscreen tmux panes with Kitty passthrough, and update the unavailable notice to recommend fullscreen mode with `allow-passthrough all`.
- Use pane-specific image IDs and virtual placements for pets and previews, reserving separate IDs from transcript images. Repaint underlying text when pet placeholders move or disappear.
- Draw pets and previews when refreshing the fullscreen transcript, and consume preview areas once per render.

## Testing

Extend the owned-screen lifecycle test to verify that preparing fullscreen enables the Kitty protocol in tmux and returning to scrollback disables it. Update `/pets` notice assertions and the popup snapshot.

Eric Traut f732dce447 Enable pane-local image previews in tmux (#59579)
## What changed

Enable composer and transcript image previews in owned-screen mode under tmux when the client is Ghostty or Kitty, RGB is supported, and `allow-passthrough` is `all`.

Use Kitty virtual placements and Unicode placeholders so images move with their pane. Allocate image IDs per pane and repaint the viewport when replacing or removing images to clear stale placeholders.

## Testing

Extend image rendering tests to cover tmux virtual placements, placeholder snapshots, redraw retention, and overlay cleanup. Add probe coverage for pane-specific image IDs and rejection of visible-only passthrough.

Eric Traut 788b9d7bf6 Recognize Rex terminals and enable Kitty graphics for pets (#58270)
## What changed

- Detect Rex from `TERM_PROGRAM=rex` or `TERM=xterm-rex` and report its name in terminal diagnostics.
- Enable Kitty graphics for pets in Rex.
- Use the detected terminal identity for Rex's label-only web links, extending that behavior to detection through `TERM`.

## Testing

Add Rex detection coverage for both environment variables and include Rex in the web-link rendering and Kitty graphics support tests.

Felipe Coury c0e88f3c04 Disable terminal status sequences on older VTE backends (#57612)
## Why

VTE versions before 0.54 lack the parser that safely ignores unknown OSC sequences. Terminal status reporting needs to account for the VTE backend even when the terminal identifies itself as GNOME Terminal or another application.

## What changed

- Track VTE backend versions independently of terminal application identity.
- Disable `OSC 7501` and `OSC 21337` status reporting when the detected VTE version is below 0.54. Preserve existing behavior for newer or unknown versions.
- Prefer `VTE_VERSION` over the terminal application version, treating empty or malformed values as unknown.

## Testing

Add regression tests for GNOME identity with VTE metadata, version precedence, and status protocol selection around the VTE 0.54 boundary, including unknown versions.

Eric Traut dffa0deb69 Show image previews in the fullscreen transcript (#54216)
## What changed

Render local viewed images and generated image artifacts as bounded thumbnails in the rich fullscreen transcript using Kitty or Sixel graphics. Viewed images appear when their activity is expanded or the detailed presentation is active; generated images appear alongside their saved-path entry.

Keep previews clipped to the viewport, retain graphics across unrelated redraws, and remove them when overlays open. Bound image decoding and cache memory, and preserve text-only entries for remote workspaces, unsupported terminals, missing files, and oversized images. Image rows do not enter searchable or selectable text.

## Testing

Add layout and snapshot coverage for disclosure, viewport clipping, rewrapping, raw-mode fallback, deleted files, and oversized rasters. Add terminal coverage for retained Kitty graphics, repainting after a clear, local-file transport, and overlay cleanup.

Felipe Coury b3c3bad976 Apply configuration toggles live and improve settings navigation (#53429)
## Why

Several configuration toggles required restarting Codex, and settings search only filtered the current group. Narrow terminals also truncated setting values and descriptions.

## What changed

- Apply animations, composer stars, paste detection, automatic recaps, and tips without restarting Codex. Update active motion effects and paste detection when their preferences change.
- Group animations and composer stars in an Effects picker that refreshes after saving and requires animations for composer stars.
- Search across all configuration groups, show each result's group, and preserve the query when switching groups.
- Keep setting values visible in narrow terminals and show the selected description below the list. Reserve space to keep the panel height stable and tailor footer hints to the selected action.
- Simplify configuration notices and omit routine save confirmations.

## Testing

Add and update tests and snapshots for live preference saves while offline, paste detection updates, Effects picker refreshes, global search, and stable panel height at narrow widths.

Eric Traut 5ee2bdf1e0 Unify TUI picker styling and improve compact session layouts (#46697)
## What changed

- Remove the legacy selection-list appearance and use shared full-width selection, filled tabs, wrapped hints, and separate overflow rows throughout.
- Give resume and fork pickers separate toolbar and search rows. Collapse spacing on short screens, keep the focused toolbar control visible on narrow screens, and prioritize labeled primary actions in the footer.
- Apply shared selection styling and contrast-aware text colors to session rows and metadata. Clear inherited selection colors and reversal from the transcript loading overlay.
- Preserve clipped-header notices alongside results in small approval dialogs.

## Testing

Add rendering assertions and snapshots for session selection contrast, reversed selection, loading overlay styles, compact metadata and action labels, and keyboard-focused toolbar visibility. Extend approval clipping snapshots to shorter terminal heights.

Eric Traut 79d2144ec6 Standardize TUI picker presentation and fix wrapping boundaries (#46691)
## Why

Menu layouts and hints vary across TUI flows, and mismatched measurement and rendering widths can clip subsequent choices when descriptions wrap.

## What changed

- Apply shared picker styling across selection menus, with stable columns, descriptions hidden when space is tight, and compact hints derived from configured key bindings.
- Measure rows at their actual rendering width, including caller insets, so wrapped options receive enough space.
- Wrap model menu headers and shortcut capture content, and use the shared panel surface for shortcut capture.
- Indicate clipped headers in non-searchable menus and show the configured `view all` shortcut only when the view supplies one.

## Testing

Add regression tests and snapshots for wrapping boundaries, narrow picker layouts, configured selection and cancellation keys, and clipped approval headers. Verify that copy/export actions retain complete payloads and composer drafts.

Charlie Marsh 10fbb61838 Cache the test pet spritesheet encoding (#39028)
## Why

Pet tests reuse the same blank WebP spritesheet fixture, so encoding a new image
for every temporary path does unnecessary repeated work.

## What changed

Encode the test spritesheet once with `LazyLock`, then write the cached WebP bytes
to each requested fixture path.

Celia Chen 09cf609218 Route pet asset downloads through the shared HTTP client (#36008)
## Why

Built-in pet downloads used a standalone blocking client, so CDN redirects did
not use Codex's configured route handling.

## What changed

- Download pet spritesheets asynchronously with a reusable
  `RouteAwareClientPool`.
- Keep cache validation, asset installation, and pet decoding off the async
runtime while sharing one asset-and-load path across startup, previews, and
  selection.
- Preserve the download size limit while consuming streamed response chunks,
and remove the TUI's direct `reqwest` dependency.

## Testing

Add coverage for oversized response chunks, cached built-in assets, pet loads
without an existing Tokio runtime, and stale preview and selection completions.

Charlie Marsh 00cb5c465b Upgrade Ratatui to 0.30.2 (#35959)
## What changed

- Upgrade `ratatui`, `ratatui-macros`, `crossterm`, and `ansi-to-tui`, and adapt the TUI to their updated rendering, backend, color-conversion, and cell APIs.
- Use Ratatui's cell-width and continuation-cell metadata when mapping OSC 8 hyperlinks so links remain aligned across wrapped wide glyphs and halfwidth characters with dakuten.
- Preserve explicit hyperlinks in the sign-in success screen and empty MCP state without embedding escape sequences in the text passed to Ratatui.

## Testing

- Add regression coverage for hyperlink placement across wide glyphs and halfwidth dakuten, hyperlink preservation in onboarding and MCP output, and display-width handling.

Felipe Coury a66712c95d fix(tui): warn on unsupported iTerm2 pet versions (#23371)
## Why

Older iTerm2 builds can be detected as supporting the image transport
that terminal pets use, but in practice they fail to render the pet flow
correctly. Instead of silently attempting image rendering, Codex should
tell the user that their iTerm2 version is too old and that upgrading is
the fix.

## What Changed

- gate iTerm2 pet auto-detection on version `3.6.0` or newer
- show a dedicated upgrade message for older or unknown iTerm2 versions
instead of the generic unsupported-terminal warning
- keep the existing generic unsupported-terminal path for non-iTerm
terminals
- add regression coverage for iTerm2 version parsing and the old-iTerm
warning path

## How to Test

1. Start Codex in iTerm2 3.6 or newer.
2. Run `/pets`.
3. Confirm the pets picker opens instead of showing a warning.
4. Start Codex in an older iTerm2 build, or exercise the equivalent test
path.
5. Run `/pets`.
6. Confirm Codex warns that pets require iTerm2 3.6 or newer and tells
the user to upgrade.
7. Also verify that a non-iTerm unsupported terminal still shows the
generic unsupported-terminal message.

Targeted tests:
- `cargo test -p codex-terminal-detection`
- `cargo test -p codex-tui pets::`
- `cargo test -p codex-tui slash_pets_on_unsupported_terminal`
- `cargo test -p codex-tui slash_pets_on_old_iterm2`

Felipe Coury 9798eb377a feat(cli): add codex doctor diagnostics (#22336)
## Why

Users and support need a single command that captures the local Codex
runtime, configuration, auth, terminal, network, and state shape without
asking the user to know which diagnostic depth to choose first. `codex
doctor` now runs the useful checks by default and makes the detailed
human output the default because the command is usually run when someone
already needs context.

The command also targets concrete support failure modes we have seen
while iterating on the design:

- update-target mismatches like #21956, where the installed package
manager target can differ from the running executable
- terminal and multiplexer issues that depend on `TERM`, tmux/zellij
state, color handling, and TTY metadata
- provider-specific HTTP/WebSocket connectivity, including ChatGPT
WebSocket handshakes and API-key/provider endpoint reachability
- local state/log SQLite integrity problems and large rollout
directories
- feedback reports that need an attached, redacted diagnostic snapshot
without asking the user to run a second command

## What Changed

- Adds `codex doctor` as a grouped CLI diagnostic report with default
detailed output and `--summary` for the compact view.
- Adds stable report sections for Environment, Configuration, Updates,
Connectivity, and Background Server, plus a top Notes block that
promotes anomalies such as available updates, large rollout directories,
optional MCP issues, and mixed auth signals.
- Adds runtime provenance, install consistency, bundled/system search
readiness, terminal/multiplexer metadata, `config.toml` parse status,
auth mode details, sandbox details, feature flag summaries, update
cache/latest-version state, app-server daemon state, SQLite integrity
checks, rollout statistics, and provider-aware network diagnostics.
- Adds ChatGPT WebSocket diagnostics that report the negotiated HTTP
upgrade as `HTTP 101 Switching Protocols` and include timeout, DNS,
auth, and provider context in detailed output.
- Makes reachability provider-aware: API-key OpenAI setups check the API
endpoint, ChatGPT auth checks the ChatGPT path, and custom/AWS/local
providers check configured HTTP endpoints when available.
- Adds structured, redacted JSON output where `checks` is keyed by check
id and `details` is a key/value object for support tooling.
- Integrates doctor with feedback uploads by attaching a best-effort
`codex-doctor-report.json` report and adding derived Sentry tags for
overall status and failing/warning checks.
- Updates the TUI feedback consent copy so users can see that the doctor
report is included when logs/diagnostics are uploaded.
- Updates the CLI bug issue template to ask reporters for `codex doctor
--json` and render pasted reports as JSON.

## Example Output

The examples below are sanitized from local smoke runs with `--no-color`
so the structure is reviewable in plain text.

Felipe Coury 95b332c820 feat(tui): add ambient terminal pets (#21206)
## Why

The Codex App has animated pets, but the TUI had no equivalent ambient
companion surface. This brings that experience into terminal Codex while
keeping the main chat flow usable: the pet should feel present, but it
cannot cover transcript text, composer input, approvals, or picker
content.

The feature also needs to be terminal-aware. Different terminals support
different image protocols, tmux can interfere with image rendering, and
some users will want pets disabled entirely or anchored differently
depending on their layout.

## What Changed

- Add a TUI ambient pet renderer in `codex-rs/tui/src/pets/`.
- Port the app-style pet animation states so the sprite changes with
task status, waiting-for-input states, review/ready states, and
failures.
- Add `/pets` selection UI with a preview pane, loading state, built-in
pet choices, and a first-row `Disable terminal pets` option.
- Download built-in pet spritesheets on demand from the same public CDN
path already used by Android, under
`https://persistent.oaistatic.com/codex/pets/v1/...`, and cache them
locally under `~/.codex/cache/tui-pets/`.
- Keep custom pets local.
- Add config support for pet selection, disabling pets, and choosing
whether the pet follows the composer bottom or anchors to the terminal
bottom.
- Reserve layout space around the pet so transcript wrapping, live
responses, and composer input do not render underneath the sprite.
- Gate image rendering by terminal capability, disable image pets under
tmux, and support both Kitty Graphics and SIXEL terminals.
- Add redraw cleanup for terminal image artifacts, including sixel cell
clearing.

## Current Scope

- This is an initial TUI version of ambient pets, not full App parity.
- It focuses on ambient sprite rendering, `/pets` selection, custom
pets, terminal capability gating, and on-demand CDN-backed built-in
assets.
- The ambient text overlay is currently disabled, so the TUI renders the
pet sprite without extra status text beside it.

## How to Test

1. Start Codex TUI in a terminal with image support.
2. Run `/pets`.
3. Confirm the picker shows built-in pets plus custom pets, and the
first item is `Disable terminal pets`.
4. On a fresh `~/.codex/cache/tui-pets/`, move onto a built-in pet and
confirm the first preview downloads the spritesheet from the shared
Codex pets CDN and renders successfully.
5. Move through the pet list and confirm subsequent built-in previews
use the local cache.
6. Select a pet, then send and receive messages. Confirm transcript and
composer text wrap before the pet instead of rendering underneath the
sprite.
7. Change the pet anchor setting and confirm the pet can either follow
the composer bottom or sit at the terminal bottom.
8. Return to `/pets`, choose `Disable terminal pets`, and confirm the
sprite disappears cleanly.

Targeted tests:
- `cargo test -p codex-tui ambient_pet_`
- `cargo test -p codex-tui
resize_reflow_wraps_transcript_early_when_pet_is_enabled`
- `cargo insta pending-snapshots`
