victor-openai ea64727556 Add single-server MCP status discovery with thread connection reuse (#48783)
## Why

Inspecting one MCP server should not require full-inventory discovery or a separate connection when a thread already has one.

## What changed

- Add optional `serverName` to `mcpServerStatus/list` and update generated schemas and bindings.
- With `threadId`, apply any pending runtime refresh and reuse the thread's current connection and tool catalog, waiting only for the selected server during discovery.
- Without `threadId`, create a discovery connection for only the selected server. Unknown names return an empty page; omitting `serverName` preserves full-inventory discovery.

## Testing

Add a regression test covering both status detail modes, checking that tool metadata is preserved and that status reads do not repeat `initialize` or `tools/list` requests.

Brent Traut de9e78e3e7 Add item anchors to thread/items/list pagination (#48151)
## What changed

Allow `cursor` to accept an item anchor such as `{"type":"item","itemId":"item-123"}` with a non-empty `turnId`. Ascending pagination returns items after the anchor; descending pagination returns items before it. The anchor itself is excluded, and subsequent pages use the returned opaque string cursor.

Resolve anchors within the requested turn's visible history, including inherited fork history. Reject missing turn IDs and empty, unknown, or out-of-scope item IDs with invalid params (`-32602`). Preserve existing string and null cursor behavior, and update the protocol schemas, TypeScript and Python types, and API documentation.

## Testing

Add protocol round-trip and invalid-shape tests, app-server coverage for anchored pagination and errors, and thread-store coverage for growing turns, reverse pagination, page boundaries, fork visibility, and anchor scope validation.

Eric Traut b725da3b6d Add Pro Max plan support and update Pro display names (#47971)
## What changed

- Recognize `promax` in authentication, account responses, and backend rate limits; update generated schemas and client types.
- Display `prolite` as “Pro”, `pro` as “Pro (More)”, and `promax` as “Pro (Max)” in account labels, status, and analytics.
- Include Pro Max in experimental context eligibility, paid-plan tooltips, and usage-limit guidance for purchasing credits.

## Testing

Extend coverage for Pro Max plan parsing, account and rate-limit responses, experimental context eligibility, and plan display names. Update the login token test to expect “Pro (More)”.

Steve Coffey dafb133c5b Surface Flex capacity failures as a distinct terminal error (#47967)
## What changed

- Recognize `flex_unavailable` in HTTP 429 responses and streamed `error` and `response.failed` events. End normal turns without retries and report `Flex capacity unavailable.`
- Expose `flexUnavailable` through the core and app-server protocols and generated schemas and SDK types.
- Keep Flex capacity failures eligible for Guardian review and sampler retries, with a distinct telemetry classification.
- Map unexpected HTTP responses to `HttpConnectionFailed`, preserving their status codes.

## Testing

Add regression coverage for terminal Flex failures over HTTP, SSE, and WebSocket, HTTP 504 status preservation after a stream retry, and protocol serialization. Update Guardian retry and sampler recovery tests to cover Flex failures.

victor-openai a1f40f3f13 Expose hosted plugin extensions in app-server summaries (#47263)
## What changed

- Request installed-plugin metadata with `includeExtensions=true` and carry optional `extensions` through the cache into `PluginSummary`.
- Add typed declarations for global, settings, thread, and file entrypoints, quick actions, settings tools, icons, and search mention providers. Update JSON schemas and TypeScript and Python bindings.
- Accept supported snake_case aliases and emit camelCase fields. Discard incompatible extension declarations without invalidating the installed-plugin inventory.

## Testing

Add an integration test covering extension metadata preservation, field normalization, and unknown entrypoint and quick-action types across live and cached `plugin/installed` reads. Update pagination assertions to require `includeExtensions=true`.

victor-openai 3b50349e1a Add explicit app and account targets to MCP resource reads (#47248)
## What changed

Allow `mcpServer/resource/read` to specify `target: {connectorId, linkId}` for direct hosted app reads without tool discovery, when supported by the backend. Require an explicit `linkId`: a string selects an account, while `null` requests no-auth access subject to backend policy.

Restrict direct targets to `codex_apps` and reject empty connector IDs, empty link IDs, and synthetic link IDs. Preserve originating app/account scope when `originCallId` and `threadId` are supplied, and retain discovery when `target` is omitted.

Update protocol schemas and TypeScript and Python models, preserving required-but-nullable `linkId` semantics in Python code generation.

## Testing

Extend resource-read tests to check target metadata with and without a thread, including explicit no-auth targets and omitted targets. Add Python model tests for string and null `linkId` values and rejection of a missing `linkId`.

alexsong-oai 064e701b0f Add explicit gateway OAuth sign-in to app-server (#47207)
## Why

Clients with a gateway sign-in UI need to control when browser authorization starts and inspect credential readiness before making authenticated requests.

## What changed

- Add `initialize.capabilities.explicitGatewayOauth` to require explicit login while allowing existing credentials to refresh. Preserve automatic authorization for clients that omit the capability, and prevent later connections from undoing explicit opt-in.
- Add `account/gatewayOAuth/read`, `account/gatewayOAuth/login`, and `account/gatewayOAuth/cancel`, plus `account/gatewayOAuth/changed` notifications. Send the authorization URL only to the initiating connection and cancel its login on disconnect.
- Check gateway authentication before returning cached results from `model/list`, with restart guidance when provider settings have changed.
- Update protocol schemas, TypeScript and Python bindings, and document capability probing and the sign-in lifecycle.

## Testing

Add tests for passive readiness reads, credential reuse after login, token exchange failures, cancellation and immediate retry, connection ownership, legacy versus explicit login, and model-list authentication checks.

Alex Kotliarskyi b23324986d Expose HTTP origins in MCP server status (#47159)
## What changed

Add nullable `httpOrigin` to `McpServerStatus`, derived from the effective configured endpoint for both configured and plugin-provided servers. Return only the HTTP(S) origin, excluding credentials, path, query, and fragment; return `null` for stdio transports, invalid URLs, and non-HTTP(S) schemes. Update the generated protocol schemas and TypeScript and Python types.

## Testing

Extend status integration tests to cover configured and plugin-provided HTTP servers, verify that endpoint paths and query parameters are omitted, and assert `null` for a stdio server. Update protocol tests to check null serialization and compatibility with older inventory responses.

chiam-oai 772abc9425 Preserve and expose thread item lifecycle timestamps (#47114)
## What changed

- Persist producer-recorded item start and completion times in thread history, preserving existing non-null values on updates.
- Return nullable `startedAtMs` and `completedAtMs` Unix millisecond timestamps from `thread/items/list`, and update the generated schemas and TypeScript and Python types.
- Leave timestamps unknown for existing rows and older writers.

## Testing

Add coverage for exact timestamp persistence, protocol round trips with present and missing timestamps, paginated item responses, and compatibility with older database writers.

victor-openai 05de935205 Expose declared onboarding skills in plugin details (#46544)
## What changed

Add an optional `onboardingSkill` summary to `plugin/read` responses and update the generated schemas, TypeScript types, and Python models.

- Resolve local declarations from `extensions["com.openai"].onboardingSkill`, accepting relative paths with or without `./`. Require the resolved path to stay within the plugin root and match a loaded skill.
- Match remote release metadata's `onboarding_skill_name` against the plugin's skills.
- Return the summary only when the plugin and matching visible skill are enabled; remote plugins must also be available. Otherwise, return `null`.

## Testing

Add parameterized local and remote `plugin/read` tests covering matching, missing, and unmatched declarations, disabled plugins and skills, and unavailable remote plugins.

ptiet-oai a6d4741d39 Add per-app tool exposure configuration (#46035)
## Why

Server-level tool exposure settings apply to every connector on the apps server. Individual connectors need a way to opt out of deferred discovery without changing exposure for other apps.

## What changed

Add `apps.<connector_id>.omit_tools_from` with support for `code_mode`, `deferred`, and `direct`. Combine connector omissions with server omissions so app settings preserve server restrictions.

For example, `omit_tools_from = ["deferred"]` makes a connector's tools available without tool search, through direct calls or Code Mode as permitted by the active tool mode and remaining restrictions.

Expose the setting in the app-server protocol, JSON schemas, and generated TypeScript and Python types.

## Testing

Add integration coverage for connector-specific exposure and MCP dispatch across tool modes, server restrictions, and direct-only namespaces. Extend config tests to cover populated, absent, and empty omission lists, and add a Code Mode request-history snapshot.

rhan-oai 883af106b9 Retire the personality feature flag and document deprecated settings (#45809)
## What changed

- Accept and ignore `features.personality` in user configuration, profiles, and managed requirements.
- Remove feature gating from `personality = "none"`, which strips the literal `# Personality` section when preparing model catalog instructions. Preserve explicit base instructions and existing thread instructions.
- Document deprecated personality fields in configuration, app-server schemas, and the Python SDK: `friendly` and `pragmatic` no longer select a style, and `supportsPersonality` is always `false`.

## Testing

Add regression coverage for ignored legacy flag values and managed requirements, personality opt-out behavior with the flag absent or set to either value, role overrides, and preservation of explicit base instructions, including empty strings.

victor-openai b71af39fe6 Preserve MCP App UI metadata in tool-call events and history (#45805)
## Why

Clients need widget presentation details to render MCP Apps without waiting for the full MCP catalog, including when replaying saved history.

## What changed

- Add `mcpToolCall.mcpAppUi` with the invoked descriptor's `resourceUri` and `preferredModelDisplayMode`, and carry it through tool-call events and saved history.
- Support `fullscreen` and default to `inline` when the display preference is missing or unsupported.
- Keep existing resource URI fields for compatibility. Leave `mcpAppUi` null for older history and tools that declare widgets only in result metadata, where clients still use catalog discovery.
- Update protocol schemas, TypeScript and Python types, and app-server documentation.

## Testing

Add parameterized integration coverage for fullscreen, missing and unsupported preferences, legacy URI metadata, and result-only widgets, verifying consistent tool events and preservation across session resume.

Krish Chainani 7b8b17b97a Support image references by file ID in inputs and tool outputs (#45794)
## What changed

- Accept `fileId` alongside the existing `url` form for app-server image inputs, and forward file references to the Responses API as `file_id`. Update generated schemas and client types.
- Preserve file references, image detail hints, and mixed inline/file image ordering through user-message events, thread history, and rollout migration. Retain file images when truncating tool output.
- Pass file references through image preparation without resolving them, while keeping resize-notice numbering correct. Omit them from unsupported TUI display and Guardian image context.
- Reject image-edit requests whose recent-image window includes a file reference, preventing selection of an older inline image instead.

## Testing

Add coverage for serialization, request and rollout preservation, mixed-image history ordering, incomplete ordering metadata, tool-output truncation, and rejection of unsupported image-edit selections.

iceweasel-oai fbad00774b Separate Windows sandbox implementations from legacy setup modes (#45737)
## Why

`allowedWindowsSandboxImplementations` uses the legacy setup-mode type, which cannot represent `mxc`.

## What changed

- Introduce `WindowsSandboxImplementation` with `elevated`, `unelevated`, and `mxc` variants for configuration requirements, and update the generated schemas and TypeScript and Python types.
- Keep `WindowsSandboxSetupMode` limited to `elevated` and `unelevated`, and update the requirements mapping and its test assertions to use the new type.
- Document that clients selecting `mxc` skip the legacy setup and readiness APIs and use the standard `command/exec` streaming and process-control path.

acrognale-oai a4354e2d27 Expose selected workspace routing in app-server account reads (#45529)
## What changed

- Add experimental `account/read.workspaceRouting` metadata containing the selected ChatGPT workspace ID, resolved HTTPS backend origin, and routing override (`us`, `us_cr`, or `NO_CONSTRAINT`).
- Discover and cache routing through `accounts/check` for saved logins, new logins, and workspace switches. Return `null` for signed-out accounts, API-only accounts, and saved credentials without a selected workspace.
- Validate discovered origins against required `chatgpt_base_url` origins. Return errors for failed or malformed discovery and retry on later reads.
- Wait for requirements and routing before publishing account updates, including to newly initialized connections. Clear routing on logout, discard stale discovery results, and guard queued notifications against account changes.

## Testing

Add unit and integration coverage for origin resolution and validation, discovery failures and retries, startup discovery, workspace switching, logout, configuration changes during discovery, and authentication changes while notifications wait for queue capacity.

Eric Traut 91d54f1667 Restore collaboration mode when resuming threads (#45519)
## Why

Resuming a thread initialized its collaboration mode to Default, losing the saved Plan mode and its developer instructions. Reconnecting clients also lacked a server-reported mode to reconcile changes made by another client.

## What changed

- Restore the saved collaboration mode from the latest matching `ThreadSettingsApplied` event, falling back to the last legacy `TurnContext`. Apply the effective model and reasoning effort while retaining the saved mode and developer instructions.
- Include `collaborationMode` in `thread/resume` responses and update the generated schemas and bindings.
- Use the restored mode in the TUI, including the first prompt after resume. Prefer the server's mode when restoring disconnected input, while preserving the local selection for older servers that omit it.

## Testing

Add regression coverage for persisted and legacy collaboration modes, model and reasoning-effort overrides, the resumed Plan mode display and first prompt, and reconnect behavior with and without a server-reported mode.

acrognale-oai a20092a7a2 Expose effective login methods in config requirements (#45495)
## Why

Configuration requirements did not report which login methods the running app server permits after applying managed policy, forced login settings, and workspace restrictions.

## What changed

- Add `allowedLoginMethods` to `configRequirements/read`, using the running authentication manager's effective policy rather than newly read authentication settings.
- Return requirements when login methods are restricted even without managed requirements, while preserving `requirements: null` for the unrestricted default.
- Update protocol schemas and generated TypeScript and Python types. An empty list permits no login method; older servers may omit the field.

## Testing

Add coverage for managed and forced login restrictions, workspace intersections, policy reporting after requirements files change, invalid login methods, and API-only Amazon Bedrock without ChatGPT requests. Extend tests for conflicting authentication requirements and cloud policy precedence.

Matthew Zeng c62d191c4c Expose disabled plugin settings in the app-server API (#44905)
## What changed

- Accept `disabledPluginIds` in `thread/settings/update` and `turn/start`. A supplied list replaces the saved selection; omission or `null` preserves it, and `[]` clears it.
- Return the selection in thread start, resume, and fork responses and `thread/settings/updated` notifications. Update generated schemas and client types.
- Restore disabled plugin IDs from the history retained at the requested fork boundary, preserving explicit overrides.

The selection persists across resume but does not yet filter plugin capabilities.

faizan-oai e3a52b87b2 Expose available access programs in model discovery (#44893)
## What changed

Carry optional `available_access_programs` metadata through model information, presets, caches, and the TUI, and expose it as `availableAccessPrograms` in app-server `model/list` responses. Update the generated JSON schemas, TypeScript types, and Python models.

Preserve the distinction between missing metadata and an empty `cyber` list. Ignore unknown cyber program names when reading the catalog so new server programs do not prevent older clients from loading it. Discovery metadata does not grant access; inference still enforces authorization.

alexsong-oai 1aaa453ce2 Enforce managed model provider selection and definitions (#44650)
## What changed

- Support `model_provider` and `model_providers` in managed requirements. Required selection overrides local and session configuration; each required provider definition replaces the corresponding local entry, including its authentication and headers.
- Merge provider requirement fragments before validation, preserving source-relative `auth.cwd` paths. Reject invalid cloud provider definitions before replacing the cached bundle, including unsupported Bedrock overrides.
- Expose `modelProvider` and `modelProviders` through the configuration requirements API and generated schemas. Reject writes to managed provider settings and omit their local origins, including for provider IDs containing dots.

## Testing

Add tests for requirement precedence, authentication fragment merging, path resolution, cloud cache preservation, and read-only configuration RPCs. Integration tests verify that model discovery and inference use the required gateway and ChatGPT authentication without leaking local headers, and that provider requirements survive configuration rebuilds.

joeytrasatti-openai 3319d9b296 Add app-server APIs for stored thread attachments (#44564)
## What changed

- Add `thread/attachment/add`, `thread/attachment/list`, and `thread/attachment/remove` to manage durable resource references without loading the owning thread or changing conversation history.
- Identify attachments by thread, `attachmentType`, and `identityKey`. Repeated adds return the existing attachment; repeated removals succeed without emitting another update. Listing supports cursor pagination.
- Broadcast `thread/attachment/updated` after creation or deletion, after responding to the requester. Serialize attachment mutations with thread lifecycle operations and reject stores that do not support attachments.
- Update protocol schemas, TypeScript and Python bindings, documentation, and TUI notification handling so attachment updates do not add untracked threads to the agent picker.

## Testing

Ahmed Ibrahim ddea03ad04 Start Python SDK turn subscriptions at their attachment point (#44400)
## What changed

Make turn event delivery depend on when each consumer attaches:

- Handles returned by `thread.turn(...)` receive events from when the request is sent, including events received before the response arrives.
- Other handles and explicit low-level registrations receive only events from when they join. Remove replay of completed items, token usage, and terminal events; use `thread.read(include_turns=True)` for earlier history.
- Retain unread events for active subscribers and pending starts, release unused turn state, and close the returned subscription when an async start is cancelled.

Preserve the existing low-level subscription when repeated `turn_start(...)` calls return the same turn.

## Testing

Update coverage for late joins, request-time buffering, completion or transport failure before a start returns, async cancellation cleanup, and repeated low-level starts. Adjust external-message integration tests to allow handles to collect different items while receiving the same final response.

Ahmed Ibrahim 1a4096e273 Add untrusted external messages to the Python SDK (#44086)
## Why

Applications need to deliver content from other agents, tools, or services with tool-level authority, without treating it as user input or granting authorization.

## What changed

- Export `ExternalMessage` for sync and async `run(...)` and `turn(...)`, accepting text or structured content with a tool name and optional namespace. Send it through `toolOutput` and require CLI 0.151.0 or newer.
- Support starting a turn or joining an active regular turn while preserving external content as function output in history. Keep external messages separate from user-input lists and `steer(...)`.
- Give turn handles independent subscriptions, replaying completed items and latest usage to joining handles. Release consumed transient events and clean up subscriptions on closure, failure, or cancellation.
- Document the authority boundary and add sync and async examples.

## Testing

Add coverage for wire representations, input validation, runtime compatibility, tool authority across resume, active-turn joins, and tool-output truncation. Add subscription tests for replay, concurrent consumers, early completion, cancellation, and cleanup.

Ahmed Ibrahim 8afccec87a Expose Python SDK history selection and per-turn options (#44084)
## Why

Python callers need control over response history loading and a way to override the service tier for one turn. These options also need runtime compatibility checks to prevent older CLIs from silently ignoring them.

## What changed

- Add `include_turns` to sync and async thread resume/fork methods. Omission preserves server defaults; `False` skips response history loading without changing model context.
- Add `turn_service_tier` and `source` to sync and async `run()` and `turn()`, and generate both methods together to keep their options aligned.
- Require CLI `0.151.0` or newer when sending the new options, with lazy schema checks for unversioned local builds.
- Pin the bundled runtime dependency to `0.153.4` and reject unsupported runtime versions during SDK packaging.

## Testing

Add coverage for option forwarding, history flag omission and inversion, runtime version checks, cached schema probing, and packaging compatibility. Extend app-server and installed SDK smoke tests to exercise the new options.

Ahmed Ibrahim 45134c0463 Generate Python SDK types from repository app-server schemas (#44032)
## Why

Keep Python protocol models aligned with the checked-in app-server schemas and preserve reviewed generated artifacts when staging SDK releases.

## What changed

- Generate SDK types from the schema directory configured in `pyproject.toml`, with a `--schema-dir` override, instead of invoking the pinned runtime binary.
- Refresh Python artifacts through `just write-app-server-schema` for standard repository exports. Skip SDK updates for scratch and experimental exports.
- Regenerate protocol models and notification dispatch, deriving the known payload union from the registry so `Notification.payload` covers every registered event.
- Explicitly allowlist convenience API parameters so new protocol fields do not silently expand method signatures. Preserve existing approval path wrappers.
- Stage SDK releases using checked-in generated files without regenerating them.

## Testing

Add coverage for schema selection, refresh gating and failure handling, release artifact preservation, notification payload typing, and approval path compatibility. Update the generation drift test to use repository schemas.

- Regenerate the Python protocol models and notification registry from that runtime, exposing the latest requests, responses, notifications, and schema fields.
- Keep `ReasoningEffort` and `ThreadSource` as enum-style APIs while accepting unknown future wire values, and omit `last_turn_id` from the flat `thread_fork` helper.

## Testing

efrazer-oai 5a67d898a5 Allow ChatGPT accounts without email (#28991)
# Summary

Codex required every ChatGPT account to have an email address. A
service-account personal access token can return valid account metadata
without one, so PAT login failed while decoding the metadata response.

This change makes email optional in the account metadata type that owns
it and preserves that absence through authentication, provider account
state, the app-server API, generated clients, and TUI bootstrap.
Existing accounts with email addresses keep the same behavior.

## Behavior-changing call sites

| Call site | Behavior after this change |
| --- | --- |
| `login/src/auth/personal_access_token.rs` | PAT metadata accepts a
missing or null email and retains `None`. |
| `agent-identity/src/lib.rs` | Agent Identity JWT claims accept an
omitted email. |
| `login/src/auth/storage.rs` and `login/src/auth/agent_identity.rs` |
Stored and managed Agent Identity records carry `Option<String>`.
Deserialization maps the legacy empty-string sentinel to `None`. |
| `login/src/auth/manager.rs` | `get_account_email` returns the stored
option, and managed identity bootstrap no longer converts `None` to an
empty string. |
| `model-provider/src/provider.rs` and `protocol/src/account.rs` | A
ChatGPT provider account requires a plan type but may carry no email. |
| `app-server-protocol/src/protocol/v2/account.rs` | `account/read`
keeps the `email` field on the wire and returns `null` when the account
has no email. Generated TypeScript and JSON schemas describe a required,
nullable field. |
| `sdk/python/src/openai_codex/generated/v2_all.py` | The generated
Python `ChatgptAccount` model accepts `None` for email. |
| `tui/src/app_server_session.rs` | Email-less ChatGPT accounts
bootstrap normally, keep external feedback routing, omit account-email
telemetry, and display the plan in account status. |

## Design decisions

- Missing email remains `None` at every layer. The code never uses an
empty string as a substitute.
- The app-server response includes `"email": null` instead of omitting
the field. Clients retain a stable response shape.
- Plan type remains required for provider account state. This change
relaxes only the email assumption.

## Testing

Tests: affected test targets compile, scoped Clippy and formatting pass,
a focused TUI snapshot covers plan-only account status, real
before/after PAT login smoke covers metadata without email, app-server
smoke covers `account/read` with `email: null`, and a regression smoke
covers an existing email-bearing PAT. Unit tests run in CI.

## Evidence

Visual smoke evidence will be attached here.

Ahmed Ibrahim 9316acf9b2 [2/4] Add private Python goal operations (#27111)
## Why

The Python SDK must treat the runtime's initial goal turn and its
continuations as one logical operation. That requires a private
lifecycle engine before the public API can return the existing turn
handle and result types.

## What

- start goals by composing the existing clear/set goal RPCs
- enforce persisted, idle threads and a bounded startup handshake
- coalesce continuation notifications under a stable logical turn ID
- aggregate items, usage, timing, and terminal status
- support rollover-aware steering, interruption, cancellation, and
cleanup
- provide equivalent sync and async internals

This is the second PR in the stack and intentionally adds no public API.

## Test plan

- online CI, including the Python SDK suite
- behavioral coverage is added in the following two stack PRs
2026-06-09 15:32:15 -07:00
Ahmed Ibrahim 5a0f913426 [1/4] Add Python goal routing foundation (#27110)
## Why

Goal continuation turns are emitted by the existing runtime as separate
physical turns. The Python SDK needs private thread-scoped routing
before it can present those notifications as one logical operation,
without changing ordinary turn routing or the app-server protocol.

## What

- add private goal operation state and thread-scoped notification
routing
- add internal wrappers for the existing `thread/goal/clear` and
`thread/goal/set` RPCs
- include existing goal notifications in the SDK notification union
- preserve ordinary turn-ID routing unchanged
- add focused routing coverage

This PR does not expose a public goal API. It is the first PR in the
Python goal operations stack.

## Test plan

- online CI, including the Python SDK suite
- focused typed-notification routing coverage

Ahmed Ibrahim eb1cc3824c [codex] Prepare Python SDK beta documentation and package metadata (#24836)
## Why

The initial public `openai-codex` beta should read and install like a
normal published Python package before a release tag is created. This
follows merged PR #24828, which establishes the independent SDK beta
release plumbing and exact runtime dependency.

## What changed

- Rewrote `sdk/python/README.md` as a compact PyPI-facing beta package
page: published installation, one quickstart, short login examples,
built-in help, and links to deeper guides.
- Updated the getting-started guide, API reference, FAQ, and examples
index to present the published beta consistently without repeating
onboarding in the package landing page or reference page.
- Made `pip install openai-codex` the primary install path while beta
releases are the only published SDK releases, with `--pre` documented
for opting into prereleases after a stable release exists.
- Added curated `help()` / `pydoc` docstrings across the public API and
generated public convenience methods through
`scripts/update_sdk_artifacts.py`.
- Declared the repository `Apache-2.0` license expression and
Documentation URL in package metadata, without introducing a duplicated
SDK-local license file.
- Kept the source distribution focused on installable package material
(`src/openai_codex`, `README.md`, and `pyproject.toml`); the repository
docs and runnable examples remain linked from the PyPI README.
- Built release artifacts in an Alpine container on the Ubuntu runner,
matching Python SDK CI and allowing type generation to install the
published `musllinux` runtime wheel.
- Added `twine check --strict` to the release workflow so malformed PyPI
metadata or rendered README content fails before publishing.
- Added focused SDK assertions for beta metadata, the exact runtime pin,
source distribution contents, and the built-in Python documentation
surface.

## Validation

- Ran `uv run --frozen --extra dev ruff check
scripts/update_sdk_artifacts.py src/openai_codex
tests/test_public_api_signatures.py
tests/test_artifact_workflow_and_binaries.py` before the final
README-only reductions and review-fix follow-ups.
- Built `openai_codex-0.1.0b1-py3-none-any.whl` and
`openai_codex-0.1.0b1.tar.gz` before the final README-only reductions
and review-fix follow-ups.
- Ran `python -m twine check --strict` on both built artifacts before
the final README-only reductions and review-fix follow-ups.
- Verified artifact metadata reports `Apache-2.0` without a duplicated
SDK-local license file.
- Verified `inspect.getdoc(...)` resolves documentation for the package,
`Codex`, `CodexConfig`, and key generated thread methods.
- Rebased the documentation/readiness change onto merged PR #24828
without changing the intended SDK or workflow file contents.
- Final verification is delegated to online CI for this PR.

Ahmed Ibrahim 4d0c4cd058 [codex] Add independent beta release for the Python SDK (#24828)
## Why

`openai-codex` needs a beta release lifecycle without requiring beta
releases of its pinned runtime package. Previously, SDK staging rewrote
its runtime dependency to the SDK version, which made an SDK-only beta
impossible.

## What changed

- Set the initial SDK beta version to `0.1.0b1` and pin it to published
stable `openai-codex-cli-bin==0.132.0`.
- Decoupled SDK release staging from runtime versioning so it preserves
the reviewed exact runtime pin.
- Added a `python-v*` tag workflow that builds and publishes only
`openai-codex` through PyPI trusted publishing.
- Removed the Beta classifier from runtime package metadata for future
runtime publications.
- Regenerated protocol-derived SDK models from the selected stable
runtime package.

`0.132.0` is the newest stable runtime admitted by the checked-in
dependency date fence and retains the Linux wheel family currently used
by SDK CI.

## Release setup

Before pushing `python-v0.1.0b1`, configure PyPI trusted publishing for
the `openai-codex` project with workflow `python-sdk-release.yml`,
environment `pypi`, and job `publish-python-sdk`.

## Validation

- `uv run --frozen --extra dev ruff check src/openai_codex scripts
examples tests`
- Parsed `.github/workflows/python-sdk-release.yml` with PyYAML.
- Built staged release artifacts locally:
`openai_codex-0.1.0b1-py3-none-any.whl` and
`openai_codex-0.1.0b1.tar.gz`.
- Verified wheel metadata pins `openai-codex-cli-bin==0.132.0`.
- Tests are deferred to online CI for this PR.

Ahmed Ibrahim 0db49a7e6a [codex] Rename Python SDK AppServerConfig to CodexConfig (#24800)
## Why

`AppServerConfig` is exported as part of the ergonomic Python SDK
surface and passed to `Codex(...)` and `AsyncCodex(...)`. That name
exposes the underlying app-server transport at the same layer where
users are configuring the Codex client. `CodexConfig` makes the common
callsite read naturally and names the object it configures.

## What changed

- Renamed the public configuration dataclass from `AppServerConfig` to
`CodexConfig`.
- Updated `Codex`, `AsyncCodex`, and the transport clients to accept
`CodexConfig`.
- Updated binary-resolution messages, package exports, docs, examples,
and related coverage to use the new public name.

## API impact

```python
from openai_codex import Codex, CodexConfig
with Codex(config=CodexConfig(codex_bin="/path/to/codex")) as codex:
    ...
```

Callers should now import and construct `CodexConfig`; `AppServerConfig`
is no longer part of the Python SDK surface.

## Validation

- `uv run --frozen --extra dev ruff check src/openai_codex scripts
examples tests`
- Tests are deferred to online CI for this PR.

Ahmed Ibrahim b1cbf622ad [codex] Add friendly Python SDK sandbox presets (#24772)
## Why

The Python SDK currently exposes sandbox selection differently depending
on where it is used: thread lifecycle methods accept `SandboxMode`,
while turns accept the lower-level `SandboxPolicy` shape. For the common
case of choosing an access level, that leaks app-server wire details
into otherwise straightforward SDK usage.

This makes the common path explicit and discoverable: callers choose a
named sandbox preset once, using the same keyword on threads and turns.
The preset name `workspace_write` also makes the granted capability
clear at the callsite.

## What changed

- Added a root-level `Sandbox` enum with documented presets:
  - `Sandbox.read_only`: read files without allowing writes.
- `Sandbox.workspace_write`: the normal default for projects with a
recorded trust decision; read files and write inside the workspace and
configured writable roots.
  - `Sandbox.full_access`: run without filesystem access restrictions.
- Documented that omitting `sandbox=` delegates to app-server's
configured default, while explicit turn overrides remain sticky for
subsequent turns.
- Updated sync and async thread lifecycle and turn APIs to consistently
accept `sandbox=Sandbox...`, translating to the existing app-server
thread and turn representations internally.
- Updated the public API artifact generator so regenerated SDK wrappers
retain the friendly enum shape.
- Replaced low-level policy construction in Python docs, examples, and
the walkthrough notebook with the preset API.
- Added focused coverage for root exports, method signatures,
preset-to-wire mapping, and rejection of raw string sandbox inputs.

## API impact

High-level turn calls now use `sandbox=` instead of `sandbox_policy=`:

```python
from openai_codex import Codex, Sandbox
with Codex() as codex:
    thread = codex.thread_start(sandbox=Sandbox.workspace_write)
    result = thread.run("Review the diff only.", sandbox=Sandbox.read_only)
```

`thread_start(...)` already defaults to `ApprovalMode.auto_review`, so
normal writable usage is concise:

```python
with Codex() as codex:
    thread = codex.thread_start(sandbox=Sandbox.workspace_write)
    thread.run("Update the files in this workspace.")
```

With that combination, edits inside `cwd` and configured writable roots
run within the workspace-write sandbox. Operations that require
approval, such as edits outside those roots, are routed through auto
review. When `sandbox=` is omitted, app-server resolves its configured
default. A sandbox supplied to `run(...)` or `turn(...)` applies to that
turn and subsequent turns.

## Test coverage

- `sdk/python/tests/test_public_api_signatures.py` covers the public
export and parameter names, including the default approval mode.
- `sdk/python/tests/test_public_api_runtime_behavior.py` covers preset
mappings to the existing wire types and raw string rejection.

Michael Bolin 0b4f86095c sdk: launch packaged Codex runtimes (#23786)
## Why

The Python and TypeScript SDKs launch the native Codex runtime directly,
so they need to consume the same package artifact shape that release
jobs now produce. The runtime wheel should be built from the canonical
Codex package archive rather than reconstructing a parallel layout from
loose binaries.

## What Changed

- Stage `openai-codex-cli-bin` by extracting
`codex-package-<target>.tar.gz` into `src/codex_cli_bin` and validating
the expected package layout.
- Update release workflows to pass the generated package archive into
`stage-runtime` instead of the temporary package directory.
- Update Python runtime setup to download `codex-package-*.tar.gz`
release assets directly.
- Expose Python runtime helpers for the bundled package directory and
`codex-path`, and prepend that path when `openai_codex` launches the
installed runtime without duplicating Windows `Path`/`PATH` keys.
- Teach the TypeScript SDK to resolve package-layout optional
dependencies while keeping the existing npm fallback layout, and
preserve the existing Windows path variable casing when prepending
`codex-path`.

Ahmed Ibrahim f0166cadbb [codex] Return TurnResult from Python turn handles (#23151)
## Why

`TurnHandle.run()` returned the raw app-server `Turn`, whose live
start/completed payloads do not include loaded `items`, so users saw
empty `items` after starting a turn. That made the handle-based path
behave differently from `Thread.run(...)`, and pushed examples toward
persisted-thread reads plus helper extraction.

This PR makes the run APIs standalone: starting a turn and running it
returns collected turn data directly, or fails visibly when required
stream events are missing.

## What Changed

- Replaces the public `RunResult` export with `TurnResult`.
- Adds turn metadata to `TurnResult`: `id`, `status`, `error`,
`started_at`, `completed_at`, and `duration_ms`, alongside
`final_response`, `items`, and `usage`.
- Changes `TurnHandle.run()` and `AsyncTurnHandle.run()` to consume
stream events with the same collector used by `Thread.run(...)`.
- Exports `TurnError` from `openai_codex.types` for the new result
shape.
- Updates tests, examples, docs, and the walkthrough notebook to use
`result.final_response` and `result.items` directly.
- Removes persisted-thread helper paths and placeholder/skipped control
flows from the public examples and notebook.

## Verification

- `python3 -m py_compile ...` over changed SDK, example, and test Python
files.
- `python3 -c "import json;

- `git diff --check`
- `PYTHONPATH=sdk/python/src python3 -c ...` import/signature smoke for
`TurnResult`, `TurnHandle.run`, and `AsyncTurnHandle.run`.
