andrewgu-oai 888be42a20 Support explicit provider model catalog URLs (#46561)
## Why

Providers need to serve Codex model metadata independently of their inference endpoint. A custom inference `base_url` alone should not opt API-key sessions into remote catalog discovery.

## What changed

- Add `model_catalog_url` to provider configuration and thread-config serialization. Fetch the full catalog URL with provider authentication, headers, query parameters, and `client_version`, while preserving inference routing.
- Require an explicit catalog URL for API-key discovery with a custom base URL. Keep default OpenAI discovery on the Codex backend, and apply `api_key_model_discovery` gating to provider API keys and cached catalogs.
- Include the catalog URL in cache identity so different catalogs do not share cached metadata.
- Limit explicitly configured catalog responses to 1 MiB, reject redirects, and suppress URL and response diagnostics that could expose credentials.

## Testing

Add coverage for catalog configuration round-trips, query encoding, authentication and header reuse, cache identity and discovery gating, oversized responses, and redirect rejection without credential forwarding. Add an integration test verifying that catalog model metadata and instructions reach conversation requests.

3d5b66c655 Handle unknown error classifications and configure gateway OAuth (#46482)
Preserve known error classifications, including BioPolicy, while falling back to Other for unknown values so saved sessions can still be read.

Add optional gateway OAuth settings to model provider configuration.

andrewgu-oai 79b7606803 Keep credentials out of app-server logs (#39993)
## Why

App-server logs can be persisted or included in submitted diagnostics, so credentials used by model providers, authentication refreshes, and attestation requests must not appear in diagnostic output.

## What changed

- Add `RedactedString`, which preserves serialization and string access while replacing debug output with `<redacted>`.
- Use it for model-provider bearer tokens, header and query values, authentication command arguments, and attestation tokens.
- Avoid logging JSON-RPC error payloads and parser or authentication errors that may echo credentials; retain safe context such as error codes and categories.

## Testing

- Add an app-server regression test that exercises provider credentials, refreshed authentication tokens, and attestation tokens, then verifies none appear in persisted SQLite or submitted diagnostic logs.

sayan-oai 0f9fb40fa9 Allow custom providers to opt into standalone web search (#34846)
## What changed

- Add the `supports_standalone_web_search` model-provider setting, defaulting to `false`, and preserve it in remote thread configuration.
- Enable the standalone `web.run` tool for opted-in custom Responses providers when web search is enabled and the runtime provider supports it.
- Send standalone search requests through the custom provider's endpoint and authentication.

## Testing

- Cover opt-in, default-off, disabled-search, and unsupported-provider behavior.
- Verify custom-provider search request routing and authorization through the app server.

Adam Perry @ OpenAI 5a56caf18c [codex] Remove async_trait from first-party code (#27475)
## Why

First-party async traits should expose their `Send` contracts explicitly
without requiring `async_trait`. This completes the migration pattern
established in #27303 and #27304.

## What changed

- Replaced the remaining first-party `async_trait` traits with native
return-position `impl Future + Send` where statically dispatched and
explicit boxed `Send` futures where object safety is required.
- Kept implementations behavior-preserving, outlining existing async
bodies into inherent methods where that keeps the diff reviewable.
- Removed all direct first-party `async-trait` dependencies and the
workspace dependency declaration.
- Added a cargo-deny policy that permits `async-trait` only through the
remaining transitive wrapper crates.
- Updated `rand` from 0.8.5 to 0.8.6 to resolve RUSTSEC-2026-0097 and
keep the full cargo-deny check passing.

## Validation

- `just test -p codex-exec-server`: 216 passed, 2 skipped.
- `just test -p codex-model-provider`: 39 passed.
- `just test -p codex-core` and `just test`: changed tests passed;
remaining failures are environment-sensitive suites unrelated to this
migration.
- `cargo deny check`
- `just fix`
- `just fmt`
- `cargo shear`
- `just bazel-lock-check`

Rasmus Rygaard 0b4f694347 Add remote thread config loader protos (#18892)
## Why

Thread-scoped config needs a stable boundary between the app/session
owner and the config stack. Instead of having call sites manually copy
thread config fields into individual overrides, this adds the proto and
Rust plumbing needed for a `ThreadConfigLoader` implementation to return
typed sources that can be translated into ordinary config layer entries.

Keeping the remote payload typed also makes precedence easier to reason
about: session-owned thread config maps back to the existing session
config source, while user-owned thread config is represented separately
without introducing a new config-layer source until it has TOML-backed
fields.

## What changed

- Added the `codex.thread_config.v1` protobuf service and generated Rust
module for loading thread config sources.
- Added `RemoteThreadConfigLoader`, which calls the gRPC service, parses
`SessionThreadConfig` / `UserThreadConfig`, and validates provider
fields such as `wire_api`, auth timeout, and absolute auth cwd.
- Added proto generation tooling under
`config/scripts/generate-proto.sh` and
`config/examples/generate-proto.rs`.
- Added `ThreadConfigLoader::load_config_layers`, plus static/no-op
loader helpers, so tests and callers can use the same typed loader
interface while config-layer translation stays centralized.

## Verification

- `cargo test -p codex-config thread_config`
