Eric Traut db2e09106c Keep command center errors visible and preserve drafts (#44651)
## Why

Command center failures need to remain visible while users retain their task selection and composer draft, including when a task is already managed by another app server.

## What changed

- Show action errors above the retained dashboard with a return option and a clear explanation for tasks open elsewhere.
- Keep the dashboard open until task attachment succeeds, and return to the conversation when selecting the already displayed task.
- Offer “View unsent task” in a pager when restoring a failed submission would overwrite newer input.
- Show task refresh failures inline and clear the notice after a successful refresh.

## Testing

Add regression tests and snapshots for attachment conflicts, preserved selection and drafts, successful attachment, inline refresh recovery, unsent task viewing, and visible action failures.

Eric Traut b9852fe6f7 Focus the task list when reopening the agent command center (#44631)
## Why

Reopening the agent command center focused the composer, requiring an extra focus change before browsing tasks.

## What changed

- Focus the task list when opening the overview from a session or returning after task lifecycle actions. Keep composer focus when starting directly in the overview.
- Fall back to the composer when no visible tasks remain, after discovery and pending metadata have resolved.
- Preserve unsent drafts and explicit focus changes across populated refreshes.

## Testing

Add regression coverage for requested focus, draft and cursor preservation, arrow-key and Vim navigation, and empty-list fallback while metadata is pending. Add a snapshot of the reopened overview with list focus.

Benjamin Carlsson 9c9451131f Add /voice settings to choose a voice for future conversations (#44622)
## Why

The TUI has no voice picker, and realtime start requests omit the voice preference. Voice selection also needs to reflect the active project's effective server settings, which can differ from cached local settings.

## What changed

- Add `/voice settings` with the server's voice catalog and current effective selection, falling back to the built-in catalog when unavailable.
- Save `realtime.voice` through the app server and reread effective settings before confirming the selection. Report save failures and overrides.
- Resolve the effective voice for each realtime start. Apply selections to the next voice conversation without interrupting live audio, and retain compatibility with servers that lack `config/read` or return unknown voice names.

## Testing

Add picker and confirmation snapshots, plus request tests covering persistence, server defaults, catalog fallback, unknown voices, config read failures, overrides, and project settings after thread switches.

Eric Traut bf5ebd98c5 Add a hide shortcut to the agents overview (#44424)
## What changed

- Add `Ctrl+W` to hide the selected task without stopping it. Hidden tasks stay hidden through activity and metadata refreshes until explicitly resumed or the TUI restarts.
- Expose `agents.hide` in keymap configuration and the shortcut picker, and let the default binding yield to existing custom shortcuts.
- Wrap overview footer hints while keeping shortcuts and their labels together when they fit.

## Testing

Add coverage for hiding filtered tasks across statuses, visibility through activity and refreshes, explicit resume, existing keybinding compatibility, and custom chord footer rendering at narrow widths.

Eric Traut a62e98d18c Return focus to the agents overview composer on Escape (#44360)
## Why

Pressing `Esc` in the agents overview task list dismissed the overview or
exited Codex when no primary thread existed, instead of returning to the draft.

## What changed

Make list cancellation return focus to the composer, including while
reconnecting, preserving the draft and cursor position.

## Testing

Add regression coverage for returning from the list to the composer with Vim
mode enabled or disabled, both online and reconnecting. Verify draft and cursor
preservation, resumed text entry, and the absence of app events.

Eric Traut 2ce38ae6d8 Support image attachments in agents overview background tasks (#44027)
## Why

The agents overview submitted background task prompts as plain text, without image attachments or their text elements.

## What changed

- Enable image pasting in the overview composer and include attachments and text elements in the first task prompt.
- Resolve local image paths and send image bytes when using a remote workspace.
- Reject image inputs for models declared text-only before starting a thread.
- Restore unsent text and attachments after failures, or show image reattachment paths when a newer draft prevents restoration.

## Testing

Add tests for attachment rendering and submission, remote image payloads, draft recovery without overwriting newer text, and text-only model rejection.

Eric Traut 49a9d78999 Make older app-server notices configurable in the TUI (#43698)
## What changed

Add `tui.show_server_version_notice`, enabled by default. Set it to `false` to suppress informational notices about older stable app servers at startup, on reconnect, and in the agents overview. Compatibility errors and version status remain unaffected.

Refresh the overview notice when local settings change, clearing pending notices when the setting is disabled.

## Testing

Add coverage for disabling and re-enabling overview notices, clearing pending notice state, and preserving remote version status. Extend reconnect and local-settings tests to cover the new setting.

Eric Traut 694b6319d3 Use app-server metadata for TUI session restoration (#43360)
## What changed

- Carry the working directory from `thread/list` and `thread/read` in session selections, and use app-server metadata to resolve resume and fork directories.
- Use the model reported by thread reads and thread-started notifications when restoring session state.
- Remove TUI helpers that read session IDs, working directories, and models directly from rollout files or the state database. Picker selection now requires a thread ID in the selected row.

## Testing

Extend picker coverage to verify that selections preserve the working directory, and add a snapshot asserting that switching to a read thread displays the server-reported model.

Eric Traut 121f91fd5d Enable remote named permission profile selection in the TUI (#43340)
## Why

The permissions picker displayed profiles from the connected app server but disabled selection of remote custom profiles.

## What changed

- Enable named profile selection through `thread/settings/update` and track pending selections until server confirmation.
- Use pending or confirmed server permissions for subsequent turns, preserve profiles across forks and prompt edits, and reconcile pending selections on reconnect.
- Block conflicting permission changes and forks while selection is pending. Preserve input when selection fails and report unsupported app servers.
- Reject working directory changes while a remote named profile is active.

## Testing

Add regression coverage for profile selection, turn permissions, pending-selection guards, prompt-edit profile preservation, reconnect reconciliation, and profile inheritance in forks and side conversations.

Eric Traut 1fb5158b34 Preserve saved permissions when resuming or forking remote tasks (#43330)
## Why

Local permission settings could overwrite a remote task's saved server settings when resuming or forking, including its named permission profile.

## What changed

- Omit permission overrides from remote resume requests and remote fork requests that inherit saved settings.
- Reject explicit permission overrides when resuming or forking remote tasks, including overrides from session flags and selected configuration profiles.
- Refresh restored runtime permission and approval overrides after a remote resume so settings from the previous task do not persist.
- Carry the selected fork permission mode through retries after unarchiving.

## Testing

Add regression coverage for restoring saved server permission profiles, approval policies, and approval reviewers across resume and fork; rejecting explicit remote resume overrides; and clearing stale restored runtime overrides.

Benjamin Carlsson d30f9cc72a Include linked worktrees in TUI session discovery (#43279)
## Why

Directory-scoped session lookup misses conversations in linked worktrees of the same repository. Managed worktree creation also runs synchronous Git work on the TUI event loop.

## What changed

- With `worktrees` enabled for local sessions, include corresponding directories across linked checkouts in resume and fork pickers and `--last` lookup. Group them together in the agents overview and show checkout paths for picker entries from another worktree.
- Validate shared Git metadata and backlinks, preserve relative working directories and logical path aliases, and reject directory symlink escapes. Keep the expanded directory filter stable across pagination until the listing restarts.
- Fall back to the originally requested directory when an older daemon rejects an array-valued `cwd` filter.
- Create managed worktrees on a blocking worker, check transition blockers before allocation, and revalidate the source session before switching. Report retained checkout paths and cleanup instructions if the transition cannot complete.
- Start the in-session picker server in a separate task to avoid exhausting the TUI event future's stack.

## Testing

Add coverage for linked-checkout discovery, feature gating, picker selection and rendering, project grouping, pagination stability, and legacy daemon fallback. Extend worktree lifecycle tests to cover running-agent blockers and recovery after the source session changes during creation.

Eric Traut 7bab4526f9 Use server defaults when starting TUI background tasks (#43261)
## Why

Background tasks launched from the agents overview could use client model settings instead of the server defaults for the destination directory.

## What changed

- Read `config/read` for the task's destination before starting the thread, preserving explicit launch settings and applying managed new-thread defaults.
- Use the server's model provider for embedded sessions when no model or provider override is set. When the server clears the model and fast mode is enabled, resolve the fallback model from the server catalog.
- Restore the prompt and show an error if settings cannot be loaded. Keep the existing fallback for older servers that do not support `config/read`.

## Testing

Add request-level tests for local and remote destinations, model and provider selection, explicit and managed defaults, fast-mode fallback, and prompt recovery after a configuration read failure.

Eric Traut a07158c784 Keep TUI prompt history tied to local settings (#42791)
## Why

Prompt history is client-owned state, but app-server thread lifecycle responses derived its metadata from the active server configuration. When server and local settings differ, the TUI can advertise metadata for the wrong history log.

## What changed

- Pass `LocalSettings` through thread start, resume, and fork response handling.
- Build message-history metadata from the local Codex home and history preferences while continuing to use the thread configuration for server-owned session fields.

## Testing

- Cover local history metadata across embedded and remote start, resume, and fork flows with deliberately different server settings.
- Verify single-entry and batched history lookups return entries from the local prompt history.

Eric Traut 8ff74cc9b1 Show live task details in the agent command center (#42455)
## What changed

- Add bounded detail previews for the selected task, including pending approval or user-input requests, live reasoning headings, and the latest agent message.
- Prefer the most urgent child task with useful detail while keeping the task list compact.
- Populate historical last messages from existing thread reads and update live details from already-delivered events without attaching to additional threads.
- Clear stale previews after reverts, event-stream gaps, reconnects, and thread lifecycle changes.

## Testing

- Add coverage and snapshots for attention requests, live activity, historical messages, stale refreshes, and attachment changes.

Eric Traut 62f553bfd0 Use the shared composer in the agent command center (#42428)
## What changed

- Replace the command center's single-line new-task input with the shared chat composer, including multiline editing, paste handling, Vim mode, configured keybindings, cursor behavior, and input validation.
- Keep task drafts and editor state across dashboard refreshes and reconnects while separating composer focus from list, search, and rename actions.
- Preserve whitespace in dispatched task prompts, block submission while offline, and restore unsent prompts after dispatch failures when the composer is still available.

## Testing

- Add coverage for focus routing, draft retention, multiline pastes, custom keybindings, Vim mode, offline editing, failed-dispatch recovery, and responsive rendering.

Eric Traut b7f710273e Support the app-server daemon on Windows (#42405)
## Why

The managed app-server daemon and automatic TUI attachment were limited to
Unix, so Windows users could not share a background server across Codex
sessions.

## What changed

- Enable daemon lifecycle commands, `codex agents` startup, and AF_UNIX daemon
  discovery on Windows.
- Require Windows daemons to start non-elevated and verify the discovered
socket directory and peer before connecting.
- Preflight detached process support, preserve path-based environment settings,
and keep daemon processes out of the launching project's working directory.
- Fall back to an embedded server when an implicitly discovered daemon cannot
connect, while preserving errors for explicit remote endpoints and bypassing
daemon reuse when `CODEX_EXEC_SERVER_URL` is set.

## Testing

Add coverage for Windows launch restrictions and socket validation, implicit
connection fallback, executor selection, daemon discovery, and the agents
dashboard startup result.

Eric Traut 9d57be71ba Separate TUI preferences from server configuration (#42202)
## Why

TUI preferences and persistence paths belong to the local client, while thread
configuration and account requirements may come from the active app server.
Keeping both in the same resolved `Config` can replace live local preferences
when a thread is resumed, forked, reconnected, or switched.

## What changed

- Add `LocalSettings` as the TUI-owned source for UI, history, notice, and local
persistence settings, and preserve it across session lifecycle transitions.
- Write preference changes to the selected user config file and reload local
settings from disk when changing roots.
- Use the app server's account response for authentication-dependent onboarding
and status UI instead of the local model-provider configuration.
- Retain platform family and OS metadata reported by remote app servers.

## Testing

- Cover local setting defaults, overrides, persistence destinations, reloads,
and preservation across widget replacement and root switching.
- Cover remote platform metadata and server-controlled authentication UI.

Eric Traut f40e08478c Show recent sessions in the agent command center (#42104)
## Why

The agent command center only listed sessions currently loaded by the app server, so completed or otherwise unloaded tasks could not be revisited from the overview.

## What changed

- Seed the overview with up to 20 recent root sessions in addition to loaded sessions, retain discovered sessions for the lifetime of the TUI, and update rows from thread lifecycle notifications.
- Allow unloaded sessions to be resumed from the overview using the normal working-directory selection and configuration rebuild flow. Explicit runtime permission choices carry across a cold resume, while settings inherited from the previously selected task do not.
- Fall back from `recency_at` to `updated_at` when connected to an older server, and continue showing loaded sessions when recent-history listing is unavailable.

## Testing

Added coverage for recent-session discovery and retention, notification races, legacy and failed listing fallbacks, cold-resume working-directory and permission handling, reconnect behavior, and unloaded-session rendering and selection.

Eric Traut 746798b2f7 Restore agent navigation after TUI reconnects (#41918)
## What changed

- Keep the agent command center visible with its cached inventory and draft while reconnecting, then refresh it without losing the selected task.
- Allow cached, unavailable conversations to reattach when selected while preserving their drafts, recap progress, and runtime permissions.
- Report an unsubmitted rename when its target disappears during refresh, and continue to quarantine queued input instead of resending it automatically.

## Testing

- Add a Unix socket replacement test covering command-center recovery with and without an active conversation, failed reconnects, inventory changes, and subsequent live task input.

Eric Traut a7913390f7 Preserve TUI drafts after app-server disconnects (#41911)
## Why

Losing an external app-server connection can leave a submission's outcome uncertain. The TUI must preserve local work without retrying it or allowing stale server events to trigger more actions.

## What changed

- Enter an offline state when an external app-server transport disconnects during startup, event streaming, or submission.
- Keep conversation drafts, queued input, expanded pastes, attachments, and agent-overview input editable while blocking submissions, remote actions, and automatic queue replay.
- Show a connection-lost notice that directs users to copy their work and relaunch, while retaining `Ctrl-C` and an empty-composer `Ctrl-D` as quit shortcuts.
- Cancel pending views and asynchronous work, and ignore stale completions after the disconnect. Embedded app-server behavior is unchanged.

## Testing

Added unit, snapshot, and pseudo-terminal coverage for lost startup and mutation replies, offline draft editing, queued-input recovery, stale-event quarantine, agent-overview behavior, and end-to-end preservation without reconnection or resubmission.

Eric Traut c29bc99949 Preserve restored permission profiles in TUI sessions (#41192)
## Why

Restored app-server threads can carry permission profiles that cannot be
represented without loss as legacy sandbox-mode overrides. Sending those
profiles as per-turn overrides can discard their original permission details.

## What changed

- Distinguish restored permission profiles from legacy per-turn sandbox
  overrides.
- Preserve restored profiles while routing turns and changing to compatible
  working directories.
- Reject `/cd` when a restored profile cannot be represented safely by a
  legacy sandbox mode.

## Testing

- Cover retaining a restored read-only profile across `/cd` without a turn
  override.
- Verify that lossy sandbox-mode projections are detected.

Owen Lin 37f4bb94c9 Respect paginated history when stopping background tasks (#40787)
## Why

Stopping a task from the agents overview may need to look up its active turn. Paginated threads should use the turn history endpoint instead of requesting embedded full history.

## What changed

- Read the thread without turns first to determine its history mode.
- Fetch the first turn page for paginated threads when the app server supports it.
- Fall back to embedded turn history for legacy threads and legacy server negotiation.

## Testing

Added coverage for paginated and legacy threads, including fallback after legacy capability negotiation.
