725b3a44f8 Remove WebSocket transport from code-mode hosts (#40692)
## What changed

- Accept only `http://` and `https://` gRPC endpoints for app server
  `--code-mode-host` connections.
- Limit the standalone code-mode host to stdio and gRPC listeners.
- Remove the WebSocket session provider, dual-WebSocket negotiation, transport
  lanes, and related dependencies and tests.
- Keep coverage for shared and prewarmed gRPC hosts and reject WebSocket host
  URLs in CLI parsing tests.

a63cb33e8d Show reconnect guidance when disconnecting from tasks (#40629)
## Why

Exiting a TUI connected to a persistent app server can leave work running, so
the existing session-exit summary does not explain how to reconnect or stop the
active turn.

## What changed

- Distinguish disconnects, interrupted turns, and removed threads when building
  exit summaries.
- For daemon and remote sessions, report whether work may still be running and
  print commands to reconnect or stop the current turn.
- Sanitize remote WebSocket addresses in displayed commands and preserve the
  configured remote authentication environment-variable option.
- Keep the existing token-usage and resume summary for embedded sessions.

## Testing

Add coverage for daemon, remote, interrupted, embedded, archived, and deleted
session exits, including credential sanitization.

09609ba414 Harden Windows updater command execution (#40422)
## Why

Windows update commands could be influenced by the current project through
relative `PATH` entries or project-local package-manager configuration.

## What changed

- Resolve package-manager commands and `powershell.exe` using only absolute
  `PATH` entries before starting an update.
- Run the resolved command from a temporary directory so the current project
  does not affect the update, while retaining Windows `.cmd` and `.bat`
  handling.
- Reject a relative-only `PATH` with guidance to update manually.

## Testing

Added a Windows regression test that verifies relative `PATH` entries and
current-directory command decoys are ignored.

44e95c857f Allow session configuration with codex agents (#39870)
## Why

`codex agents` rejected invocation-specific configuration, preventing the
dashboard from applying settings when starting a shared thread.

## What changed

- Accept interactive options such as model, approval, sandbox, search, working
  directory, and configuration overrides when opening the agents dashboard.
- Forward supported session-flag configuration into threads started through an
  embedded or remote app server, while excluding unrelated values.
- Continue to reject initial prompts and images, along with local provider and
  additional-directory settings that cannot be applied to a remote server.

## Testing

- Cover accepted dashboard options and rejected incompatible inputs.
- Verify that explicit feature and sandbox overrides reach shared threads in
  both embedded and remote modes.

d944ce83a2 Prompt to unarchive sessions before resuming or forking (#39640)
## Why

Starting an archived session with `codex resume` or `codex fork` stopped with
guidance to run a separate `codex unarchive` command first.

## What changed

- Detect archived-session startup failures and offer to unarchive and retry the
  requested operation.
- Allow the user to cancel without modifying the archived session.
- Render the confirmation in the alternate screen when available and preserve
  inline terminal context when `--no-alt-screen` is set.
- Preserve `--no-alt-screen` whether it appears before or after the `resume` or
  `fork` subcommand.

## Testing

- Cover confirmation, cancellation, retry behavior, and unrelated startup
  failures for both resume and fork.
- Add prompt interaction and terminal rendering coverage, including narrow and
  inline viewports.

83d015375e Add a command to queue messages for existing sessions (#39092)

Remote exec-server registry requests need to refresh managed credentials before sending a request. Static auth-header resolution cannot perform the asynchronous token exchange required by workload identity.

## What changed

- Add asynchronous auth-header resolution to `AuthProvider`, with the existing static-header behavior as the default.
- Resolve fresh managed credentials for each remote environment registry request while preserving the expected account and workspace identity.
- Load the cloud configuration bundle during remote exec-server startup when workload identity is selected.

## Testing

- Update the managed-auth and environment-registry auth tests to exercise asynchronous header resolution.

2994f545a7 Enforce managed authentication requirements locally (#37132)
## Why

Authentication restrictions must apply before stored or environment-provided credentials can be used, including during bootstrap before cloud requirements are fetched.

## What changed

- Add local `requirements.toml` allowlists for login methods and ChatGPT workspaces. Ignore these fields in cloud-provided requirements.
- Combine managed workspace allowlists with existing workspace restrictions by intersection, and fail closed when the resulting policy permits no usable login method.
- Centralize policy checks in the authentication manager so CLI, TUI, app-server, external-auth, and credential-loading paths consistently reject disallowed authentication before token hydration or network requests.

## Testing

- Cover policy composition, workspace intersection, invalid stored and external credentials, bootstrap enforcement, and login endpoint restrictions.

## Why

Sequential dispatch lets a long-running request block unrelated health checks
and cleanup on the same connection.

## What changed

- Add `--concurrent-requests <COUNT>` for local and remote exec-server
  connections, while retaining sequential dispatch when the option is omitted
  or set to `1`.
- Preserve handshake ordering before enabling concurrent dispatch.
- Reserve separate capacity for status, signal, terminate, and close requests so
  they remain responsive when ordinary request capacity is saturated.
- Drain queued client responses during disconnect and cancel outstanding
  request tasks during connection shutdown.

## Testing

- Cover CLI parsing and concurrency-limit validation.
- Verify default sequential behavior, pipelined handshake ordering, concurrent
  request progress, control-request responsiveness, and disconnect handling.

1c5f336c40 Remove legacy --full-auto handling from codex exec (#36054)

166658a34a Tie remote exec servers to their parent stdin (#35843)

f61b51ddd9 Support remote code-mode hosts in app-server (#35098)
## What changed

- Add `--code-mode-host ws://...` and `wss://...` support to `codex app-server`, gated by the `code_mode_host` feature. When omitted, app-server continues to start a local host.
- Share one remote WebSocket connection across the process's threads, using the configured HTTP client's proxy and TLS policy and preserving the existing framed host protocol.
- Reject invalid host URLs, bound WebSocket frame sizes, close connections cleanly, and return an error when a connection exceeds 1,024 pending delegate calls without disconnecting it.

## Testing

- Cover CLI validation, WebSocket protocol execution and shutdown, connection sharing across app-server threads, and delegate-call capacity recovery.

Delegated HTTP requests need to honor the same outbound proxy policy as the
Codex process that starts the exec server.

- Pass the configured `HttpClientFactory` through local and remote exec-server
  startup and use route-aware client pools for delegated HTTP and local MCP
  requests.
- Preserve per-request timeouts and follow-or-stop redirect behavior while
  keeping request URLs and sensitive response headers out of diagnostics.

- Cover configured system-proxy routing across the exec-server transport.
- Cover both redirect policies and verify that success and failure logs do not

c769a05340 Honor the configured SQLite home across state consumers (#34994)
## Why

Codex and SQLite data can use separate home directories, but state consumers
could reconstruct database paths from the Codex home instead of consistently
using the resolved SQLite configuration.

## What changed

- Pass `SqliteConfig` through the core, rollout, state runtime, and thread store
  instead of passing a directory and rebuilding the configuration downstream.
- Use that shared configuration for state, logs, memories, goals, and paginated
  thread-history database access, including integrity checks and cleanup.
- Reject state database handles whose SQLite configuration does not match the
  requesting store.

## Testing

Add coverage with separate Codex and SQLite homes that verifies startup
backfill, thread listing, and paginated history all use the configured SQLite
directory.

## Why

ChatGPT token refresh requests need to follow the same configured routing policy as other authentication traffic, including environments that use the system proxy.

## What changed

- Require an `AuthRouteConfig` throughout login, logout, token refresh, personal access token, and agent identity flows.
- Build auth HTTP clients directly from that configuration instead of falling back to a default HTTP client when routing configuration is absent.

## Testing

- Add an integration test that refreshes a token through a cached system-proxy route and verifies the proxy receives the expected request.

f899a79c03 Propagate resolved proxy policy through auth routing (#34649)
## Why

Auth routing represented the default proxy policy as an absent configuration,
leaving consumers to reconstruct the fallback HTTP client independently. Carry
the application's resolved policy explicitly so auth and related requests use
the same client configuration.

## What changed

- Build `AuthRouteConfig` from the resolved `HttpClientFactory` for both
  `ReqwestDefault` and `RespectSystemProxy` policies.
- Pass that route configuration through login, auth, cloud task, and cloud
  configuration flows, and reuse its factory when loading cloud configuration.
- Log cloud-task configuration load failures before falling back to the
  transport-default proxy policy.

## Testing

Extended configuration tests to verify that effective and bootstrap auth routes
select the expected proxy policy when system-proxy support is enabled or
disabled by feature requirements.

999a715089 Route Windows sandbox proxy traffic by restricting SID (#34613)
## Why

Elevated Windows sandboxes need stable managed-proxy ports while preserving the network policy and environment attribution of each sandboxed process.

## What changed

- Keep shared HTTP and SOCKS5 loopback ingress listeners alive across managed-proxy instances.
- Add a per-route restricting SID to elevated sandbox tokens and dispatch incoming connections to the matching proxy policy after attributing the client process.
- Reject connections without exactly one registered route, remove routes when their proxy handle is dropped, and keep unsandboxed Windows launches off the managed ingress.
- Provision the elevated sandbox with the configured proxy ports and local-binding setting, honoring the selected profile and CLI overrides.

## Testing

- Add Windows unit tests for TCP ownership attribution, route selection, restricting-token propagation, and setup settings.
- Add an end-to-end Windows test covering stable ports, isolated environment policies, HTTP and SOCKS5 routing, and route teardown.

99eb575649 Honor system proxy settings in the daemon updater (#34495)

The PID-managed daemon updater downloaded the standalone installer directly,

## What changed

- Build the updater's HTTP client from the effective Codex configuration so
  `features.respect_system_proxy` also applies to installer downloads.
- Use the route-aware client pool for the installer request.
- Warn and fall back to the default `reqwest` proxy behavior when configuration
  cannot be loaded, allowing updates to continue.

## Testing

Added tests for proxy-policy selection, configuration-load fallback, exact
installer URL usage, byte preservation, and non-success HTTP responses.

## What changed

- Remove the `spawn_agents_on_csv` and `report_agent_job_result` tools and their agent-job runtime and state models.
- Drop the legacy `agent_jobs` and `agent_job_items` tables during state database migration.
- Keep `features.enable_fanout` and `agents.job_max_runtime_seconds` accepted as no-op compatibility settings while omitting them from the generated configuration schema.

## Testing

- Verify upgrades remove both legacy agent-job tables.
- Verify the removed feature and configuration keys still parse without taking effect.

50b8213385 Support ChatGPT-branded Desktop app builds (#33901)
## Why

The Desktop app can use Codex or ChatGPT branding while retaining stable platform identities. CLI discovery and TUI handoff should not depend on a single display name or hardcoded executable path.

## What changed

- On macOS, search for both `ChatGPT.app` and `Codex.app`, and accept only bundles with the `com.openai.codex` identifier.
- On Windows, detect installs by their package app ID and resolve the `codex` protocol executable from the AppX manifest before handing off a TUI session.
- Use “Desktop app” consistently in CLI and TUI user-facing text.

## Testing

Add coverage for selecting a ChatGPT-named Codex bundle and rejecting the classic ChatGPT bundle.

31b99f65cf cli: rename sandbox permission profile flag (#30095)
## Why

`codex sandbox` accepts a single named permissions profile, so the
existing plural `--permissions-profile` spelling is misleading. The
canonical flag and its help text should use the singular form without
breaking scripts that already use the old spelling.

## What changed

- Make `--permission-profile` the canonical flag for all sandbox
backends.
- Keep `--permissions-profile` as a hidden backwards-compatible alias.
- Cover the canonical spelling, legacy alias, and help visibility with
regression tests.

## Testing

Ran `just c sandbox --help` and verified I saw:

## Summary

- Record bounded connection, request, and process lifecycle metrics.
- Report active gauges from callbacks on every collection, including
delta exports.
- Serialize active-count updates so concurrent starts and finishes
cannot publish stale values.
- Serialize process exit, explicit termination, and shutdown through the
process registry so exactly one completion result wins.
- Keep the implementation small with single-owner RAII guards and one
real OTLP/HTTP integration test using the existing `wiremock`
dependency.

## Root cause

Process exit and session shutdown previously used cloned completion
state. That avoided duplicate emission, but it duplicated lifecycle
ownership and made the ordering harder to reason about. The process
registry mutex already defines the lifecycle ordering, so the final
implementation stores the metric guard and termination flag directly on
the process entry. Whichever path claims the entry first owns the
completion result.

Production metric export uses delta temporality. Event-only synchronous
gauge recordings disappear after the next collection when no count
changes, so active counts now use observable callbacks that report
current state on every collection.

The cleanup also removes the constant `result="accepted"` connection
tag, redundant route and response assertions, a custom HTTP collector,
and fallback initialization machinery that did not add behavior.

f4e6aa70e5 feat(remote-control): add daemon pairing command (#29913)
## Why

Users who run Codex remote control through daemon mode can keep the
daemon running, but they do not have a CLI path to mint the short-lived
manual pairing code needed to connect another device. Without this
command, they need to speak app-server JSON-RPC directly.

Related: #25675

## What Changed

- Added `codex remote-control pair`, which connects to the existing
daemon control socket and calls `remoteControl/pairing/start` with
`manualCode: true`.
- Kept the command non-lifecycle-mutating: it does not start, enable, or
restart the daemon.
- Human output labels the manual code as `Pairing code: ...`; `--json`
preserves the full pairing response.
- Added daemon socket-client, CLI formatting, and parser coverage.

## Verification

- `remote_control_client::tests::start_pairing_requests_manual_code`
verifies the daemon client sends `{ "manualCode": true }` and parses the
complete response.

1659c4a629 PAC 2 - Add shared auth system proxy contract (#26707)
## Summary

Stacked on #26706.

Adds the shared auth/system-proxy contract that later platform resolver
PRs plug into. This PR moves Codex-owned auth and startup HTTP clients
through a common route-aware boundary, but does not yet add Windows or
macOS system proxy resolution.

The default path remains unchanged when `respect_system_proxy` is absent
or disabled.

## Implementation

- Adds `codex-client/src/outbound_proxy.rs` with the shared
route-selection model:
  - `OutboundProxyConfig`;
  - `ClientRouteClass`;
  - `RouteFailureClass`;
  - `build_reqwest_client_for_route`.
- Preserves the existing reqwest/default-client behavior when no route
config is supplied.
- Uses the fixed MVP routing policy when route config is supplied:
platform system/PAC/WPAD discovery, then explicit env proxy variables,
then direct connection.
- Keeps platform-specific system discovery behind the shared client
boundary. This PR provides the contract and fallback behavior; later
resolver PRs plug in Windows and macOS discovery.
- Adds `login::AuthRouteConfig` so auth call sites depend on a small
policy type instead of platform resolver details.
- Maps the resolved `Config.respect_system_proxy` boolean into
`AuthRouteConfig` for auth-owned clients.
- Wires the route config through browser login, device-code login,
access-token login, login status, logout/revoke, token refresh, API-key
exchange, app-server account login, TUI/app startup, cloud-config
bootstrap, cloud tasks, plugin auth, and exec startup config loading.

## End-user behavior

- No behavior changes by default.
- When `respect_system_proxy = true`, auth-owned clients opt into the
shared route-aware client path.
- On platforms without a resolver implementation in this PR, system
discovery is unavailable and the route-aware path falls back to explicit
env proxy handling, then direct connection.
- Custom CA handling remains separate from proxy route selection and
still runs through the shared client builder.
- No proxy URLs, PAC contents, or resolved platform details are exposed
through the public config surface introduced here.

## Tests

Adds or updates coverage for:

- preserving default auth-client fallback behavior when no route config
is provided;
- injected environment-proxy fallback without mutating process
environment;
- existing login-server E2E flows using explicit `auth_route_config:
None` to guard unchanged default behavior;
- updated auth manager, login, logout, cloud-config, startup, and
plugin-auth call sites passing route config explicitly.

## Summary

This PR adds the disabled-by-default path for normal ChatGPT-login Codex
sessions to obtain Agent Identity runtime auth through the Codex
backend. Existing Agent Identity JWT startup mode remains a separate
path and does not require the feature flag.

What changed:

- adds the experimental `use_agent_identity` feature flag and config
schema entry
- adds an explicit `AgentIdentityAuthPolicy` so call sites choose
`JwtOnly` or `ChatGptAuth` instead of passing a bare boolean
- stores standalone Agent Identity JWT credentials separately from
backend-registered Agent Identity records
- persists the registered Agent Identity record, private key, and single
run task id in `auth.json` so process restarts reuse the same identity
- derives the agent/task registration base URL from ChatGPT/Codex auth
config while keeping JWT JWKS lookup separate
- provisions and caches ChatGPT-derived Agent Identity runtime auth when
`use_agent_identity` is enabled
- reuses the shared run-task registration helper from PR1 rather than
adding a second task-registration path

This PR intentionally does not switch model inference over to
`AgentAssertion` auth. The provider-auth integration lands in the next
PR.

instead of introducing task targets, caller-owned external task refs, or
intermediate wrappers that later PRs would need to undo.

What changed:

- keeps the `AgentAssertion` wire payload as `agent_runtime_id`,
`task_id`, `timestamp`, and `signature`
- exposes `register_agent_task` as the single task-registration helper
for both existing Agent Identity JWT auth and the ChatGPT-registration
path added later in the stack
- makes task registration send only the signed registration timestamp;
the backend owns the returned opaque task id
- removes the unused target/task-kind/external-task-ref surfaces from
`codex-agent-identity`
- keeps Agent Identity JWT JWKS lookup separate from agent/task
registration URL derivation
- updates Agent Identity JWT auth to register one run task during auth
construction and share that task across cloned auth handles

This PR intentionally does not enable ChatGPT-derived Agent Identity.
That opt-in and config gate are added in the next PR.

d61dfeb23a feat(app-server): persist remote-control desired state (#27445)
## Why

Remote-control runtime enablement and persisted enrollment preference
were represented by separate flags. That made startup rehydration, RPC
persistence, and new-enrollment seeding race with one another, and it
did not cleanly distinguish runtime-only CLI or daemon starts from
durable app-server RPC changes.

## What Changed

- Replace the parallel enablement, seed, and rehydration flags with one
transport-owned `RemoteControlDesiredState`.
- Add nullable enrollment-scoped persistence and preserve existing
preferences during enrollment upserts.
- Rehydrate plain startup only after auth and client scope resolve,
without overwriting a concurrent RPC transition.
- Make ordinary `remoteControl/enable` and `remoteControl/disable`
durable while retaining `ephemeral: true` for runtime-only callers.
- Have the daemon explicitly request ephemeral enablement and regenerate
the app-server schemas.

## Verification

- Covered migration and `NULL`/`0`/`1` persistence round trips.
- Covered plain-start rehydration and runtime-only versus durable
enrollment seeding.
- Covered durable enable, durable disable, and ephemeral enable through
app-server RPC.
- Covered the daemon's exact `{ "ephemeral": true }` request payload.

Related issue: N/A (internal remote-control persistence architecture
change).

236b50125d [codex] Load user instructions through an injected provider (#27101)
## Why

We want to remove implicit use of `$CODEX_HOME` from `codex-core` and
make embedders responsible for supplying user-level instructions. This
also ensures user instructions load when no primary environment is
selected.

## What changed

Stacked on #27415, which makes `codex exec` surface thread-scoped
runtime warnings.

- Added `UserInstructionsProvider` to `codex-extension-api`, with
absolute source attribution and recoverable loading warnings.
- Added `codex-home` with the filesystem-backed provider for
`AGENTS.override.md` and `AGENTS.md`, preserving precedence, fallback,
trimming, lossy UTF-8 handling, and the existing uncapped global
instruction size.
- Removed global instruction loading from `Config` and require
`ThreadManager` callers to inject a provider.
- Load provider instructions once for each fresh root runtime, including
runtimes without a primary environment. Running sessions retain their
snapshot, while child agents inherit the parent snapshot without
invoking the provider.
- Keep provider instructions separate while loading project `AGENTS.md`,
then assemble the model-visible instructions with the existing ordering,
source attribution, warning, and turn-context behavior.
- Wired the Codex home provider through the CLI, app server, MCP server,
core facade, and thread-manager sample.

9d88e299a7 Print TUI session info on fatal exits (#27417)
## Summary

TUI exits printed the resume/session summary only after checking the
exit reason. On fatal exits, both CLI wrappers wrote the error and
called `process::exit(1)` immediately, so an active session that ended
on a fatal error could skip the session information entirely.

This change prints the normal exit summary before returning the fatal
nonzero exit code. If a fatal exit has a known thread id but no
resumable rollout hint, it prints `Session ID: <id>` instead of staying
silent. It also flushes stdout before `process::exit(1)` so the summary
line is not lost during process teardown.

## Implementation

- Apply the fatal-exit ordering fix in both `codex` and standalone
`codex-tui`.
- Keep normal user-requested exit behavior unchanged.
- Preserve the existing resume hint when a rollout is resumable, and use
the raw thread id only as a fatal-exit fallback.
