f21dc46388 Canonicalize default tools under the functions namespace (#37022)
## What changed

- Group top-level function and custom tool definitions into a single `functions` namespace for Responses Lite providers that support namespaced tools.
- Normalize missing, empty, and explicit `functions` namespaces to the same tool identity across registration, routing, lifecycle hooks, configuration, and tool search.
- Keep default tool names unprefixed in code mode, display output, and dispatch traces while preserving explicit non-default namespaces.

## Testing

- Add coverage for Responses Lite serialization, tool search results, namespace normalization and collision handling, routing, lifecycle events, and code-mode namespace policies.

d4fb78bfc5 Support custom tools in namespaces (#36857)
## What changed

- Allow namespace tool specs to contain custom freeform tools alongside function tools.
- Include namespaced custom tools in deferred tool search and expose them to code mode with names such as `editor__apply_patch`.
- Route custom payloads to matching extension tools while preserving function-only payload validation.

## Testing

- Add serialization, tool search, code-mode definition, and end-to-end dispatch coverage for namespaced custom tools.

12288240b4 Support deferred loading for freeform tools (#36856)
## What changed

- Add optional `defer_loading` support to freeform Responses API tool definitions.
- Omit the field when it is unset so existing eager tool definitions retain their wire shape.

## Testing

- Verify legacy freeform tool deserialization and eager and deferred serialization shapes.

12c115d558 Reduce cloning when building Responses requests (#34825)
## Why

Preparing Responses API requests rebuilt tool definitions as a generic JSON
tree, and incremental WebSocket requests cloned their full item prefix for
comparison.

## What changed

- Serialize tool definitions into shared raw JSON that can be embedded directly
  in HTTP and WebSocket requests.
- Compare incremental request prefixes in place while still ignoring internal
  message metadata.

## Testing

- Verify raw tool JSON matches the existing value encoding.
- Preserve the serialized WebSocket request payload.

07d631875e Use canonical indexed web access field (#31289)
## Summary

- Rename the hosted web-search wire field to the canonical
`indexed_web_access` spelling.
- Preserve existing indexed-search behavior.

## Rollout

Merge and release only after server support for `indexed_web_access` is
fully deployed.

## Testing

- `just fmt`
- `just test -p codex-tools
web_search_tool_spec_serializes_expected_wire_shape`
- Blocking CI passed, including indexed web-search integration coverage.

3a2712ea14 Add indexed web search mode (#28489)
## Summary

- Add `web_search = "indexed"` alongside `disabled`, `cached`, and
`live`.
- Use that same resolved mode for both hosted and standalone web search.
- For hosted search, send `index_gated_web_access: true` with external
web access enabled only when `indexed` is selected.
- For standalone search, preserve the existing boolean wire values for
existing modes (`cached` maps to `false` and `live` to `true`) and send
`"indexed"` only for `indexed`; `disabled` keeps the tool unavailable.
- Carry the mode through managed configuration requirements and
generated schemas.

## Why

Indexed search provides a middle ground between cached-only search and
unrestricted live page fetching. Search queries can remain live while
direct page fetches are limited to URLs admitted by the server.

The existing `web_search` setting remains the single source of truth, so
hosted and standalone executors cannot drift into different access
modes. Without an explicit `indexed` selection, the existing
model-visible tool and request shapes are unchanged.

## Validation

- `just fmt`
- `just test -p codex-api` (`126 passed`)
- `just test -p codex-web-search-extension` (`7 passed`)

- Focused configuration, hosted request, standalone request, and
managed-requirement coverage is included in the PR; remaining suites run
in CI.

The full workspace test suite was not run locally.

83decfa300 [codex] Remove unused legacy shell tools (#22246)
## Why

Recent session history showed no active use of the raw `shell`,
`local_shell`, or `container.exec` execution surfaces. Keeping those
handlers/specs wired into core leaves duplicate shell execution paths
alongside the supported `shell_command` and unified exec tools.

## What changed

- Removed the raw `shell` handler/spec and its `ShellToolCallParams`
protocol helper.
- Removed the legacy `local_shell` and `container.exec` handler/spec
plumbing while preserving persisted-history compatibility for old
response items.
- Normalized model/config `default` and `local` shell selections to
`shell_command`.
- Pruned tests that exercised removed raw-shell/local-shell/apply-patch
variants and kept coverage on `shell_command`, unified exec, and
freeform `apply_patch`.

c9e46ed639 [codex] Make handlers own parallel tool support (#22254)
## Why

`ToolRouter::tool_supports_parallel()` was still consulting configured
specs when a handler lookup missed, even though parallel schedulability
is really a property of the executable handler. Keeping that metadata on
`ConfiguredToolSpec` duplicated state between the model-visible spec
layer and the runtime handler layer.

This change makes handlers the sole source of truth for parallel tool
support and removes the extra spec wrapper that only existed to carry
duplicated metadata.

## What changed

- removed `ConfiguredToolSpec` and store plain `ToolSpec` values in the
registry/router builder path
- changed `ToolRouter::tool_supports_parallel()` to consult only the
handler registry and fall back to `false`
- simplified spec collection and test helpers to operate directly on
`ToolSpec`
- updated router/spec tests to cover handler-owned parallel behavior and
the no-handler fallback

## Validation

0df7e9a820 register all mcp tools with namespace (#17404)
stacked on #17402.

MCP tools returned by `tool_search` (deferred tools) get registered in
our `ToolRegistry` with a different format than directly available
tools. this leads to two different ways of accessing MCP tools from our
tool catalog, only one of which works for each. fix this by registering
all MCP tools with the namespace format, since this info is already
available.

also, direct MCP tools are registered to responsesapi without a
namespace, while deferred MCP tools have a namespace. this means we can
receive MCP `FunctionCall`s in both formats from namespaces. fix this by
always registering MCP tools with namespace, regardless of deferral
status.

make code mode track `ToolName` provenance of tools so it can map the
literal JS function name string to the correct `ToolName` for
invocation, rather than supporting both in core.

this lets us unify to a single canonical `ToolName` representation for
each MCP tool and force everywhere to use that one, without supporting
fallbacks.

supported in
<https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/guides/structured-outputs#supported-schemas>,
and also allows us to render richer function signatures in code mode
(e.g., anyOf{null, OtherObjectType})

4e27a87ec6 codex-tools: extract configured tool specs (#16129)
## Why

This continues the `codex-tools` migration by moving another passive
tool-spec layer out of `codex-core`.

After `ToolSpec` moved into `codex-tools`, `codex-core` still owned
`ConfiguredToolSpec` and `create_tools_json_for_responses_api()`. Both
are data-model and serialization helpers rather than runtime
orchestration, so keeping them in `core/src/tools/registry.rs` and
`core/src/tools/spec.rs` left passive tool-definition code coupled to
`codex-core` longer than necessary.

## What changed

- moved `ConfiguredToolSpec` into `codex-rs/tools/src/tool_spec.rs`
- moved `create_tools_json_for_responses_api()` into
`codex-rs/tools/src/tool_spec.rs`
- re-exported the new surface from `codex-rs/tools/src/lib.rs`, which
remains exports-only
- updated `core/src/client.rs`, `core/src/tools/registry.rs`, and
`core/src/tools/router.rs` to consume the extracted types and serializer
from `codex-tools`
- moved the tool-list serialization test into
`codex-rs/tools/src/tool_spec_tests.rs`
- added focused unit coverage for `ConfiguredToolSpec::name()`
- simplified `core/src/tools/spec_tests.rs` to use the extracted
`ConfiguredToolSpec::name()` directly and removed the now-redundant
local `tool_name()` helper
- updated `codex-rs/tools/README.md` so the crate boundary reflects the
newly extracted tool-spec wrapper and serialization helper

bc53d42fd9 codex-tools: extract tool spec models (#16047)
## Why

This continues the `codex-tools` migration by moving another passive
tool-definition layer out of `codex-core`.

After `ResponsesApiTool` and the lower-level schema adapters moved into
`codex-tools`, `core/src/client_common.rs` was still owning `ToolSpec`
and the web-search request wire types even though they are serialized
data models rather than runtime orchestration. Keeping those types in
`codex-core` makes the crate boundary look smaller than it really is and
leaves non-runtime tool-shape code coupled to core.

## What changed

- moved `ToolSpec`, `ResponsesApiWebSearchFilters`, and
`ResponsesApiWebSearchUserLocation` into
`codex-rs/tools/src/tool_spec.rs`
- added focused unit tests in `codex-rs/tools/src/tool_spec_tests.rs`
for:
  - `ToolSpec::name()`
  - web-search config conversions
  - `ToolSpec` serialization for `web_search` and `tool_search`
- kept `codex-rs/tools/src/lib.rs` exports-only by re-exporting the new
module from `lib.rs`
- reduced `core/src/client_common.rs` to a compatibility shim that
re-exports the extracted tool-spec types for current core call sites
- updated `core/src/tools/spec_tests.rs` to consume the extracted
web-search types directly from `codex-tools`
- updated `codex-rs/tools/README.md` so the crate contract reflects that
`codex-tools` now owns the passive tool-spec request models in addition
to the lower-level Responses API structs
