teddywyly-oai 49862b62be Retry Guardian reviews when authorization changes (#47819)
## Why

New user input during a Guardian review invalidated an in-flight approval and aborted the pending action, even when the input was only a status inquiry. Review the action again against the latest authorization evidence so it can proceed or be denied based on the updated instructions.

## What changed

- Treat stale authorization as a retryable review error within the existing attempt budget and shared deadline.
- Refresh authorization evidence for each attempt while keeping the pending action fixed, and record evidence from the completed attempt.
- Preserve cancellation and history-reset aborts, and deny approval if stale authorization exhausts the retry budget.

## Testing

Add and update coverage for parent status updates, authorization revocation, repeated updates, cancellation, history resets, and retry deadlines. Verify that refreshed reviews see the latest input and that the pending action executes exactly once only after approval.

iceweasel-oai 6f6af0fce4 Record sandbox backends in command execution analytics (#47568)
## Why

Command execution analytics lack the observed sandbox backend. Older execution servers may omit this information, so an unknown backend must remain distinguishable from an explicitly unsandboxed process.

## What changed

- Carry optional `sandbox_type` metadata through command execution items and emit its metric tag as `sandbox_backend` in analytics.
- Propagate the observed backend through unified execution completion and failure events, including asynchronous exits.
- Preserve missing backend information as `None` and mark executed user shell commands as `Some(SandboxType::None)`.
- Exclude the metadata from serialized command items and generated schemas and TypeScript types.

## Testing

Extend tests for missing and explicit executor backends, backend propagation on failed execution, and analytics payloads, including platform-specific backend tags in app-server integration coverage.

acrognale-oai 8f8ace78cb Enforce application network policy for AWS auth and telemetry (#47408)
## Why

AWS credential discovery, analytics, and telemetry used clients that did not share the application's network policy. These requests need to honor destination restrictions and permission revocation.

## What changed

- Route AWS credential and region HTTP requests through the shared HTTP client, and check the signing destination before loading credentials. Skip discovery for static access keys with an explicit region.
- Apply account-scoped policy to Bedrock authentication. Require unrestricted policy for credential exporters and reauthentication commands, and cancel active work when permission is revoked. Document that AWS profile `credential_process` network traffic remains outside the application's HTTP policy.
- Send analytics through the authenticated account's HTTP client factory.
- Guard OTLP log, trace, and metric exports with revocable permits, disable them under destination restrictions, and make managed HTTP exports cancellable. Suppress global Statsig settings while managed policy is active.

## Testing

Add coverage for metadata credential request cancellation, allowed and denied SigV4 destinations, AWS credential precedence and endpoint configuration, and blocked credential exporter recovery. Update telemetry tests for account transitions and managed-policy Statsig suppression.

alexsong-oai 064e701b0f Add explicit gateway OAuth sign-in to app-server (#47207)
## Why

Clients with a gateway sign-in UI need to control when browser authorization starts and inspect credential readiness before making authenticated requests.

## What changed

- Add `initialize.capabilities.explicitGatewayOauth` to require explicit login while allowing existing credentials to refresh. Preserve automatic authorization for clients that omit the capability, and prevent later connections from undoing explicit opt-in.
- Add `account/gatewayOAuth/read`, `account/gatewayOAuth/login`, and `account/gatewayOAuth/cancel`, plus `account/gatewayOAuth/changed` notifications. Send the authorization URL only to the initiating connection and cancel its login on disconnect.
- Check gateway authentication before returning cached results from `model/list`, with restart guidance when provider settings have changed.
- Update protocol schemas, TypeScript and Python bindings, and document capability probing and the sign-in lifecycle.

## Testing

Add tests for passive readiness reads, credential reuse after login, token exchange failures, cancellation and immediate retry, connection ownership, legacy versus explicit login, and model-list authentication checks.

Eddie Chen 6a601c00da Preserve originating turn metadata for yielded skill calls (#47106)
## Why

Code Mode callbacks can retain skill tools after another turn becomes active. Looking up the active turn when a delayed skill invocation completes can lose access to the originating turn's metrics and metadata.

## What changed

- Capture and retain the originating `SkillTurnMetrics` when constructing skill analytics.
- Expose turn analytics metadata through the turn extension store and carry it into skill telemetry.
- Add optional turn metadata to `TrackEventsContext` and pass it from app, skill, and plugin usage call sites.

## Testing

Add a regression test that yields a Code Mode cell, starts another turn, and releases both skill reads through a shared barrier. Assert that each `skill_invocation` event retains its originating `turn_id`.

Charlie Marsh 87bc50f9d4 Cache OS discovery for user agents and telemetry (#47038)
## Why

OS discovery can launch subprocesses on Linux. Repeating it for requests, analytics events, and metrics provider creation adds unnecessary work for stable metadata.

## What changed

Cache `os_info::get()` with a separate `LazyLock` in user-agent generation, analytics runtime metadata, and metrics OS resource attributes. Continue reading the user-agent originator and suffix on each call so updates remain effective.

## Testing

Add an isolated Linux regression test that races initial user-agent lookups and repeats calls, verifies `lsb_release` and `getconf` each run once, and checks that subsequent originator and suffix updates appear in the user agent.

Henry Levy 49e248d4c3 Add opt-in compaction after final responses (#46541)
## What changed

Add `model_post_turn_compact_threshold_percent` to trigger compaction after a final response when context usage reaches the configured percentage of the usable window or an existing auto-compaction limit. Accept values from `0` to `100`; omitted or zero disables the feature.

Skip post-turn compaction when input is pending, the turn is cancelled, or token-budget mode is enabled. Disable it for approval reviewers to avoid delaying approval completion, and record a distinct `PostTurn` analytics phase.

Buffer local post-turn summaries until compaction succeeds and require a nonempty assistant summary before replacing history. Log compaction failures without failing the completed turn, while still propagating interruptions and turn aborts.

rhan-oai 2f522c5dc0 Split analytics tests into focused suites (#46488)
## What changed

Replace `analytics_client_tests.rs` with event-specific suites under
`codex-rs/analytics/src/tests/suite/` and shared fixtures in `tests/support.rs`.
Group turn tests by events, requests, compaction, and accepted lines, and keep
cross-event arrival-order coverage in a dedicated reducer ordering suite.

Separate app and plugin ingestion assertions into their respective suites while
retaining a combined test for arrival order. Document where to place tests based
on the contract they cover.

marksteinbrick-oai a1efb59c4a Record active plugin inventory in turn analytics (#46323)
## What changed

Add `active_plugin_ids_at_turn_start` to turn analytics, combining active host plugins with selected plugin packages. Prefer remote plugin IDs when present and otherwise use validated package IDs. Sort and deduplicate the inventory.

Report `null` for unknown inventories, invalid IDs, IDs longer than 128 bytes, or inventories exceeding 512 distinct IDs; preserve `[]` for an observed empty inventory. Keep the first received inventory even when later resolved configuration updates arrive.

## Testing

Add coverage for ID selection and validation, deduplication, size limits, serialization, and preservation of the first inventory. Extend app-server tests to check inventories after plugin reconciliation and with selected plugins, including turns without explicit plugin mentions.

Chris Dong 8ace915ace Attribute analytics events to realtime voice sessions (#46058)
## What changed

Add `voice_session_id` to turn, app-use, skill-invocation, and MCP tool-call analytics events. Track realtime session lifecycle and handoff markers to preserve attribution when a handoff starts a turn after the voice session closes, or steers an active turn. Keep that attribution from carrying over to subsequent text turns.

Record handoff markers using only the thread ID, without retaining transcript content in analytics facts.

## Testing

Add coverage for attribution after realtime closure, active-turn steering without tagging the next text turn, and handoff markers that exclude transcripts. Extend event serialization and MCP tool-call tests for `voice_session_id`.

victor-openai b71af39fe6 Preserve MCP App UI metadata in tool-call events and history (#45805)
## Why

Clients need widget presentation details to render MCP Apps without waiting for the full MCP catalog, including when replaying saved history.

## What changed

- Add `mcpToolCall.mcpAppUi` with the invoked descriptor's `resourceUri` and `preferredModelDisplayMode`, and carry it through tool-call events and saved history.
- Support `fullscreen` and default to `inline` when the display preference is missing or unsupported.
- Keep existing resource URI fields for compatibility. Leave `mcpAppUi` null for older history and tools that declare widgets only in result metadata, where clients still use catalog discovery.
- Update protocol schemas, TypeScript and Python types, and app-server documentation.

## Testing

Add parameterized integration coverage for fullscreen, missing and unsupported preferences, legacy URI metadata, and result-only widgets, verifying consistent tool events and preservation across session resume.

Krish Chainani 7b8b17b97a Support image references by file ID in inputs and tool outputs (#45794)
## What changed

- Accept `fileId` alongside the existing `url` form for app-server image inputs, and forward file references to the Responses API as `file_id`. Update generated schemas and client types.
- Preserve file references, image detail hints, and mixed inline/file image ordering through user-message events, thread history, and rollout migration. Retain file images when truncating tool output.
- Pass file references through image preparation without resolving them, while keeping resize-notice numbering correct. Omit them from unsupported TUI display and Guardian image context.
- Reject image-edit requests whose recent-image window includes a file reference, preventing selection of an older inline image instead.

## Testing

Add coverage for serialization, request and rollout preservation, mixed-image history ordering, incomplete ordering metadata, tool-output truncation, and rejection of unsupported image-edit selections.

priyanshusingh-de b0af519c39 Add elicitation classification support to app and MCP analytics (#45649)
## What changed

Add an optional `elicitation_type` to app-used and MCP tool-call events, with `auth_or_link` and `approval` classifications and `null` for unclassified calls. Existing core app-use tracking passes `None`.

Expose an API to queue MCP classifications by thread, turn, and item before completion. Preserve them across turn completion, consume them on item completion, and clear them on thread closure. Bound pending classifications to 256 entries, evicting the oldest when full.

## Testing

Add coverage for serialization, first-classification retention during app-use deduplication, per-call classification across turn completion, pending-state eviction and cleanup, and exclusion of tool arguments from emitted events.

Eddie Chen 12b0164a48 Classify tool analytics events by call origin (#45535)
## What changed

Add `tool_event_type` to tool analytics events, using exact call ID evidence to distinguish `model_tool_call` from `inner_tool_call`. Serialize `null` when evidence is missing or conflicting at emission time; later evidence does not revise emitted events.

Classify sampled code-mode `exec` and `wait` calls as model calls and dispatched child calls as inner calls, without inferring origin from cell associations or parent lineage.

## Testing

Add coverage for exact and ambiguous origin evidence and late sampling evidence. Extend serialization, code-mode, collaborator, and subagent tests to check the classification.

Eric Traut 91d54f1667 Restore collaboration mode when resuming threads (#45519)
## Why

Resuming a thread initialized its collaboration mode to Default, losing the saved Plan mode and its developer instructions. Reconnecting clients also lacked a server-reported mode to reconcile changes made by another client.

## What changed

- Restore the saved collaboration mode from the latest matching `ThreadSettingsApplied` event, falling back to the last legacy `TurnContext`. Apply the effective model and reasoning effort while retaining the saved mode and developer instructions.
- Include `collaborationMode` in `thread/resume` responses and update the generated schemas and bindings.
- Use the restored mode in the TUI, including the first prompt after resume. Prefer the server's mode when restoring disconnected input, while preserving the local selection for older servers that omit it.

## Testing

Add regression coverage for persisted and legacy collaboration modes, model and reasoning-effort overrides, the resumed Plan mode display and first prompt, and reconnect behavior with and without a server-reported mode.

jwang-openai 4d8eca1ff3 Attribute command and plugin analytics to the invoking model (#45445)
## Why

Command execution and plugin measurement events lack model and reasoning-effort labels. Attribution needs to reflect the step that invoked the command, even when model settings change before a background process finishes.

## What changed

- Add `model_slug` and `reasoning_effort` to command execution and plugin measurement analytics.
- Capture model context from resolved step settings and carry it through execution, approval, Guardian review, and plugin metrics collection.
- Preserve the first command-start model context when subsequent start notifications arrive.
- Keep the carried context out of serialized protocol items and generated schemas.

## Testing

Extend analytics tests to cover model switches before invocation and during background execution, default reasoning effort, Guardian-denied commands, and repeated start notifications retaining the original model context.

Matthew Zeng c62d191c4c Expose disabled plugin settings in the app-server API (#44905)
## What changed

- Accept `disabledPluginIds` in `thread/settings/update` and `turn/start`. A supplied list replaces the saved selection; omission or `null` preserves it, and `[]` clears it.
- Return the selection in thread start, resume, and fork responses and `thread/settings/updated` notifications. Update generated schemas and client types.
- Restore disabled plugin IDs from the history retained at the requested fork boundary, preserving explicit overrides.

The selection persists across resume but does not yet filter plugin capabilities.

## Testing

Add coverage for replacing, preserving, and clearing selections without inference; turn-start notifications; resume; and fork boundaries across legacy and paginated history, with loaded and restarted parents. Add a core regression test for history restoration and explicit clearing.

rka-oai 1ac689cc7d Remove the unused legacy remote compaction implementation (#44273)
## Why

Remote compaction already uses the normal Responses API, leaving the legacy `/responses/compact` runner unused.

## What changed

- Remove the legacy runner, endpoint client, request types, analytics variant, and obsolete test helpers and snapshots.
- Move tool-output trimming and its metadata tests into `compact_remote_history` for reuse by remote compaction v2.
- Consolidate retained-history filtering in the v2 implementation and remove redundant `RemoteCompactionV2` settings from tests.

## Testing

faizan-oai 3921a30d6b Persist Daybreak preferences in thread metadata (#42854)
## Why

Clients need a per-thread Daybreak toggle that survives restarts and can be
restored on resume without changing the access program of an active or future
turn.

## What changed

- Add experimental `daybreakEnabled` support to `thread/metadata/update` and
expose the saved value on thread responses.
- Store the preference in SQLite, including for threads without a first turn,
and preserve it through reads, resumes, reconciliation, and restarts.
- Copy the preference when forking a thread while keeping subsequent updates
  independent.
- Keep `daybreakEnabled` separate from the per-turn `cyberAccessProgram` field;
app-server does not derive one from the other.

## Testing

- Cover persistence across restarts, cold reads, reconciliation, and forks.
- Verify metadata updates do not alter the access program of active or later
  turns.

iceweasel-oai 773f0b081d Preserve executor paths in Guardian approval reviews (#42838)
## Why

Guardian approval actions can contain paths from a remote executor whose path convention differs from the host, such as Windows paths reviewed on a POSIX host. Converting those paths to host-native absolute paths prevents the action from being reviewed.

## What changed

- Render command working directories using the executor's reported path convention, and preserve URI-backed paths for attribution.
- Carry foreign command and patch paths through Guardian events and app-server schemas as legacy path strings.

iceweasel-oai eb078b4f44 Preserve target-native cwd in permission approval requests (#42314)
## Why

Permission requests can originate in an environment whose path convention differs from the Codex host. Requiring the request working directory to be host-native prevents those requests from reaching interactive approval.

## What changed

- Carry the request `cwd` as a `LegacyAppPathString` through core events and the app-server protocol so the target environment's native representation is preserved.
- Convert the preserved value back to a `PathUri` when materializing permission grants.
- Regenerate the JSON and TypeScript protocol schemas for the updated `cwd` type.

- Emit `codex_guardian_v2_fast_decision` events when Guardian V2 approves an
  action without a full review.
- Add `guardian_v2_enabled` to turn analytics, accounting for review scope
  and model requirements.

## Testing

- Extend the Guardian V2 app-server coverage to verify event payloads,
attribution, enablement state, and scoped event emission.

Eddie Chen 2b7c279735 Report turn trigger and source in turn analytics (#42003)
## What changed

- Add `turn_trigger` and `codex_turn_source` to `codex_turn_event` analytics.
- Read the source from effective Responses metadata, preserving configured-over-client precedence and reflecting accepted steer metadata.
- Omit trigger and source values from analytics when they exceed the existing Responses metadata value limit.

## Testing

- Cover event serialization, turn lifecycle emission, configured and client source precedence, size limits, and source updates after steering.

marksteinbrick-oai 307ce6cda9 Track Guardian reviewer turn and tool analytics (#41023)
## Why

Trusted Guardian reviewer sessions can emit events without an app-server listener, leaving their turns and tool usage absent from analytics.

## What changed

- Translate Guardian session lifecycle and canonical tool item events into analytics notifications while excluding messages, reasoning, and review content.
- Preserve Guardian lineage during prewarming even when inherited client metadata is not yet available, without emitting an incomplete thread initialization event.
- Limit direct session tracking to trusted Guardian children so resumed threads that have an app-server listener do not report duplicate events.

## Testing

- Cover completed, failed, and interrupted Guardian turns, tool counts and timing, lineage, content exclusion, prewarmed lineage, and resumed-thread deduplication.

rka-oai e56e4922eb Support standalone tool outputs in turn/start (#41002)
## What changed

- Add an optional `toolOutput` to `turn/start` for starting or steering a turn with a named function-call output instead of user input.
- Emit standalone outputs as `functionCallOutput` thread items, persist them in durable history, and include them in resumed threads.
- Validate that tool outputs have a name, are not combined with nonempty `input`, satisfy the text-size limit, and use supported image URLs.

## Testing

- Cover standalone tool-output notifications, model input, and resumed history in both legacy and paginated history modes.
- Cover the text-size limit for structured tool output.

Dylan Hurd a57b398351 Require approval for input to escalated terminals (#40978)
## What changed

- Add the `write_stdin_approval` feature flag, disabled by default, to require a fresh approval before sending non-empty input to an escalated unified-exec terminal.
- Route these reviews through hooks, Guardian, app-server, and the TUI as `writeStdin` approvals while keeping the parent command item unchanged.
- Preserve the terminal environment, launch directory, and escalation state across turns, and revalidate the process identity after approval before writing input.

## Testing

- Cover approval routing, policy decisions, process reuse, terminal identity preservation, app-server events, analytics, and TUI rendering.

Francis Chalissery 7276d67081 Expose resumable misalignment details through app server (#40952)
## Why

App-server clients need the explanation and steering instruction returned with a
misalignment policy violation to offer a user-confirmed continuation. Missing or
incomplete details must continue to behave as a terminal block.

## What changed

- Parse optional misalignment classification, explanation, and steering details
from streamed and HTTP Responses errors and propagate them through core errors.
- Include the details in live app-server `error` and `turn/completed` payloads and
export the corresponding protocol schemas and TypeScript types.
- Keep explanations and steering messages out of serialized rollout events and
  redact them from debug output.
- Document how clients can resume with `turn/start` after user confirmation.

## Testing

- Cover streamed, HTTP, and WebSocket-wrapped errors, including malformed and
  classification-only details.
- Verify live app-server notifications expose resumable details without writing
the explanation or steering message to the rollout.

Chris Dong 346c4db7c2 Track image generation request IDs in analytics (#40714)
## What changed

- Read `x-codex-imagegen-request-id` from image generation and edit responses.
- Propagate the ID to `codex_image_generation_event` analytics.
- Keep the ID in process only, excluding it from extension item serialization, generated types, app-server wire data, and rollout history.

## Testing

- Cover response-header extraction and missing-header behavior in the images client.
- Verify end-to-end analytics emission and the unchanged image-generation item wire shape.

Adam Perry @ OpenAI 1bc02aea50 Sanitize credentials from Git remote metadata (#40713)
## Why

Git remote URLs can embed usernames, passwords, or tokens. Codex carries these
URLs through turn metadata and persisted thread metadata, so credentials must be
removed before a remote enters those paths.

## What changed

- Add `SanitizedGitUrl`, which parses Git URL and SCP-style remotes, strips
authentication data, and preserves the conventional `git` SSH user.
- Use sanitized remotes when collecting Git metadata, enriching model requests,
discovering cloud environments, updating thread metadata, and reading legacy
rollouts. Reject or omit malformed remotes instead of retaining their raw
  contents.
- Keep API, schema, and TypeScript representations as strings while enforcing
  sanitization in Rust.

## Testing

- Cover URL schemes, SCP and IPv6 forms, remote helpers, encoded paths,
  malformed values, and legacy deserialization.
- Verify credentials do not appear in model requests, API responses, SQLite, or
  rollout files.

- Include these calls in per-turn subagent tool counts while keeping the existing
`subAgentActivity` output unchanged and omitting additional public collaborator
  tool items.
- Extend the collaboration tool schemas with the new tool variants and the

Dylan Hurd 9c9675d3d0 Represent terminal input in approval reviews (#40528)
## What changed

- Add a `writeStdin` Guardian action carrying the approval, process, input, and working-directory details.
- Distinguish `command` and `writeStdin` execution approval requests while defaulting missing kinds to `command` for compatibility with older events.
- Render terminal-input review progress, denials, timeouts, and retry actions in the TUI, and record the action separately in analytics.
- Keep terminal-input reviews as child approvals so they do not change the parent command item's lifecycle or reconstructed history.

## Testing

- Cover Guardian serialization, app-server protocol conversion, command history reconstruction, analytics classification, and TUI review flows for terminal input.

Andrei Eternal cbfd999db7 Add hooks for interrupted turns (#40511)
## What changed

- Add an `Interrupt` hook event that runs for an active top-level turn before its
  interrupted abort event is emitted.
- Flush the turn transcript before invoking the hook and provide the session,
turn, transcript, working directory, model, and permission mode in its input.
- Support command and MCP handlers, including asynchronous commands, with a
  one-second default timeout and a three-second maximum.
- Expose the event through hook configuration, managed requirements, app-server
notifications, generated schemas, analytics, and the TUI hook views.

## Testing

- Cover handler discovery, timeout normalization, output parsing, protocol

Eddie Chen 49880081fe Add root turn IDs to turn and tool analytics (#40486)
## Why

Analytics need to associate subagent activity with the top-level turn that
caused it, while avoiding a stale association when steering makes that origin
ambiguous.

## What changed

- Add `root_turn_id` to turn and tool-item analytics events.
- Read the root from live turn metadata when each event is built, reporting
`null` when the root is unknown or ambiguous.
- Propagate the metadata through control-tool and code-mode completion facts so
correlated and background tool events retain the correct root.

## Testing

- Cover root IDs for top-level turns, subagent turns, correlated code-mode
calls, and tool events emitted after turn completion.
- Verify that queued and subsequent events report `null` after the live root is
  invalidated.

jif b705b6b076 Report completed sub-agent activity on parent turns (#40437)
## Why

A Multi-Agent V2 child can finish after the parent turn that spawned it, so its
successful completion needs to remain associated with that parent turn in
notifications and history.

## What changed

- Add `completed` to `SubAgentActivityKind` and emit the corresponding started
and completed item events on the spawning parent turn when a child succeeds.
- Persist completed activity as a canonical turn item in both legacy and
paginated history, and expose it through app-server history and schemas.
- Render completed activity as terminal in the TUI without counting it as a
separate tool call or tool-runtime event.

## Testing

- Cover successful completion in legacy and paginated history, late updates to
completed parent turns, TUI rendering, analytics, and rollout tracing.
- Verify that terminal child errors do not emit completed activity.

Dylan Hurd c9b19deb09 Distinguish Guardian review threads from subagents (#40221)
## Why

Guardian reviews were reported with the generic `subagent` thread source, making them indistinguishable from other delegated threads in persisted metadata and analytics.

## What changed

- Add the `guardian_review` thread source to the core protocol and app-server schema.
- Assign it to Guardian reviewer sessions and propagate the configured source through turn metadata, rollouts, and analytics.
- Continue treating Guardian reviews like subagents for paginated history and trusted-provenance checks.

## Testing

- Cover protocol round trips, delegate source selection, emitted analytics, request metadata, and persisted rollout metadata.
