stevenlee-oai 9be8d6e1c3 Harden MCP OAuth callback handling (#40691)
## Why

MCP servers can share an OAuth callback URL. Without a validated issuer or a
server-specific callback path, an authorization response could be associated
with the wrong server.

## What changed

- Use stable callbacks when authorization metadata advertises issuer-bound
responses, and validate the returned issuer before exchanging the code.
- Retain server-specific callback IDs for providers without issuer support,
including fallback to the global or default callback for legacy registered
  clients.
- Persist registered callback URLs for MCP servers and plugins, and insert the
active listener port into portless loopback redirects.

## Testing

Add coverage for issuer validation, callback-mode discovery, registered and
legacy clients, plugin OAuth, CLI persistence, and loopback listener ports.

Eric Traut 02360b48d1 Isolate MCP resource headers during OAuth requests (#39019)
## Why

Headers configured for an MCP resource can contain credentials and must not be
forwarded to a different origin during OAuth discovery, registration, or token
exchange.

## What changed

- Apply configured resource headers only to OAuth requests on the MCP resource
origin, while allowing OAuth-generated headers to take precedence.
- Follow credentialed OAuth redirects only when each destination remains on the
resource origin. Preserve redirect method semantics, the overall timeout, the
response size limit, and a maximum of 10 redirects.
- Use the Codex MCP user agent for requests to authorization-server origins.

## Testing

Add coverage for cross-origin header isolation, same-origin dynamic client
registration redirects, OAuth header precedence, token refresh, timeout
accounting, and response size limits.

jacobzhou-oai 56b82e676c Enforce Agent Plugin runtime boundaries (#37027)
## What changed

- Track Agent Plugin manifests through plugin, skill, and MCP loading so their capabilities use format-specific behavior without changing legacy plugins.
- Discover only direct-child skills, exclude app and hook capabilities, isolate MCP data, and reject MCP configuration files that are non-regular or resolve outside the plugin root.
- Bound model-visible skill instructions, plugin instructions, MCP descriptions, schemas, individual tools, and the aggregate Agent Plugin MCP tool set.
- Stop MCP and OAuth redirects when Agent Plugins send configured or authorization headers, while retaining existing redirect behavior for legacy MCP servers.

## Testing

- Add coverage for capability filtering, skill discovery, isolated MCP data and reserved-path expansion, unsafe MCP configuration files, context limits, and redirect handling.

jif 7ec480dda5 Distinguish unknown MCP authentication status (#36045)
## Why

OAuth discovery failures do not establish that an MCP server lacks OAuth
support. Reporting those failures as `unsupported` conflates an inconclusive
check with a confirmed result.

## What changed

- Add an `unknown` MCP authentication status across the protocol, app server,
  CLI, and TUI.
- Preserve OAuth discovery errors so callers can report `unknown`, while
retaining `unsupported` for servers known not to support OAuth.
- Document the distinction in the app server API.

## Testing

- Verify transient HTTP discovery errors are preserved.
- Verify `codex mcp list --json` reports `unknown` when discovery is rate
  limited.

thomas a05bcda3db Upgrade rmcp to 3.0.0 (#36001)
## What changed

- Update the Rust MCP SDK from `3.0.0-beta.3` to `3.0.0` and adapt to its renamed metadata and server discovery types.
- Accept discovery responses without server identity metadata, using the configured server name as a fallback, and rely on the SDK's native support for namespaced server identity metadata.
- Preserve typed OAuth HTTP errors so transport failures, cross-origin redirects, and transient HTTP responses are reported instead of being treated as anonymous access.

## Testing

- Cover modern discovery with namespaced or missing server identity over HTTP, SSE, and stdio.
- Cover OAuth discovery error propagation for transport failures, redirects, and transient status codes.

## What changed

- Require callers to provide an HTTP client for MCP OAuth discovery and login, removing the separate direct `reqwest` path.
- Use the shared `http` and `url` types throughout the MCP client and drop its direct `reqwest` dependency.
- Preserve configured MCP headers when routing OAuth discovery through the provided client.

## Testing

- Add coverage that routed OAuth discovery forwards configured headers.

thomas 61de0d8fe8 Upgrade rmcp to 3.0.0-beta.3 (#35720)
## What changed

- Update the `rmcp` model and transport integrations for `3.0.0-beta.3`.
- Preserve legacy `elicitation/create` form requests, schema defaults, metadata, and wire-format compatibility while adopting the new elicitation types.
- Harden OAuth discovery by using GET-first discovery without starting an MCP session, preventing cross-origin header redirects, validating authorization-server and callback issuers, and retaining compatibility with metadata that omits an issuer.
- Keep stored OAuth credentials readable and avoid requiring reauthorization after transient refresh failures.

## Testing

- Add coverage for legacy elicitation round trips, OAuth discovery variants, callback issuer validation, credential migration, and refresh failures.

Celia Chen 89a3b89c4c Route MCP auth discovery through runtime HTTP clients (#35239)
## Why

MCP authentication checks need to use the same HTTP routing as the MCP
transport so servers reached through configured proxies can be discovered
reliably.

## What changed

- Resolve OAuth discovery and authentication status through each server's
runtime HTTP client for both local and managed environments.
- Keep local discovery capped at five seconds while allowing explicit login
requests to retain their requested timeout.
- Resolve refreshed MCP configuration and its runtime context from the same
  snapshot.

## Testing

- Cover OAuth discovery through an environment proxy and macOS system proxy
  resolution.
- Cover proxied MCP startup and runtime refresh with updated authorization
  headers.
- Verify capped and preserved OAuth discovery timeout policies.

jif 2e156cbe31 Avoid blocking thread startup on MCP OAuth discovery (#32825)
## Why

OAuth metadata discovery for an optional HTTP MCP server can stall, delaying
`thread/start` even though that server is not required.

## What changed

- Remove eager MCP authentication-status discovery from session and connection
  manager startup.
- When an MCP connection reports an authentication error, inspect configured and
stored credentials locally to preserve login and reauthentication failure
reasons without making another discovery request.
- Continue using server configuration directly for startup error messages and
  timeout hints.

## Testing

Add an app-server regression test with an optional HTTP MCP endpoint that accepts
a connection but never responds, and verify that `thread/start` completes without
waiting for its configured startup timeout.

felixxia-oai a6d20ed297 [codex] Surface MCP reauthentication-required startup failures (#29877)
## Summary

- distinguish expired, non-refreshable stored MCP OAuth credentials from
first-time missing credentials
- carry a typed `failureReason: "reauthenticationRequired"` on the
existing `mcpServer/startupStatus/updated` notification only when user
action is required
- keep the public MCP auth-status API unchanged and regenerate the
app-server protocol schemas and documentation

## Why

An MCP server with an expired access token and no usable refresh token
currently fails startup without giving clients a reliable, typed
recovery signal.

The existing startup-status notification is the natural place to carry
this state. Its nullable `failureReason` keeps the recovery reason
attached to the failed startup transition without adding a one-off
notification. Internally, Codex distinguishes first-time login from
reauthentication and emits the reason only when the startup error itself
requires authentication.

## User impact

App clients can prompt an existing user to reconnect an MCP server when
automatic recovery is impossible by handling a failed
`mcpServer/startupStatus/updated` notification whose `failureReason` is
`reauthenticationRequired`. Starting, ready, cancelled, unrelated
failures, and first-time setup carry no reauthentication reason.

jif b215961a56 Support OAuth for HTTP MCP servers from selected executor plugins (#28529)
## Why

#28522 routes selected-plugin HTTP MCP traffic through the owning
executor, but OAuth bootstrap and refresh still used host-local clients.
Executor-only servers therefore cannot complete discovery or login
through the same network boundary as the MCP connection.

## What changed

- adapt `codex_exec_server::HttpClient` to RMCP 1.8's `OAuthHttpClient`
contract
- let RMCP own discovery, dynamic registration, PKCE, token exchange,
and refresh
- route auth status, persisted-token startup, and app-server login
through the server runtime while preserving the existing local discovery
path
- add optional `threadId` to `mcpServer/oauth/login` and echo it in the
completion notification
- implement RMCP's redirect policy and 1 MiB OAuth response limit over
executor HTTP
- cover selected-thread OAuth discovery and login through an
executor-only route

Depends on #28522.

xl-openai 4e6bc42266 [codex] Support protected resource OAuth discovery (#29022)
## Why

Plugin-install preflight and the actual OAuth login flow used different
discovery implementations. Preflight had a Codex-specific implementation
that only queried authorization-server metadata on the MCP host, while
login already used the upstream `rmcp` Rust MCP SDK. As a result,
servers that advertise a separate authorization server through RFC 9728
Protected Resource Metadata were classified as OAuth-unsupported during
plugin installation, so login was skipped.

## What changed

- delegate plugin-install OAuth discovery to
`rmcp::transport::AuthorizationManager`, the same implementation used by
the login flow
- let `rmcp` follow Protected Resource Metadata first and perform direct
RFC 8414 authorization-server discovery when protected-resource
discovery does not yield usable metadata
- retain Codex's existing HTTP headers, timeout, `no_proxy` behavior,
and scope normalization around that discovery
- add unit coverage and a pure-MCP plugin-install integration test that
proves the protected-resource path reaches OAuth client registration

This only changes shared MCP OAuth discovery. App declarations and
`appsNeedingAuth` behavior are unchanged.

## Verification

- `just test -p codex-rmcp-client auth_status`
- `just test -p codex-app-server plugin_install_starts_mcp_oauth`
- real plugin-install smoke test with an isolated `CODEX_HOME`: both
DigitalOcean MCP servers started OAuth callback listeners, while Linear
continued to start its existing direct-discovery OAuth flow

Adam Perry @ OpenAI f574946960 [codex] Report unusable MCP OAuth credentials as logged out (#26713)
## Why

Persisted MCP OAuth credentials were reported as authenticated whenever
a credential record existed. An expired token without a usable refresh
token could therefore appear as `OAuth` even though startup could not
authenticate with it, leaving users with a misleading status instead of
a login prompt.

## What changed

- Classify stored OAuth credentials as missing, usable, or requiring
authorization.
- Reuse the existing refresh window so near-expiry credentials without a
refresh path are also treated as logged out.
- Validate required credential fields before reporting OAuth
authentication.
- Add unit coverage for credential usability and integration coverage
for expired, unexpired, and refreshable persisted credentials.

## Validation

Michael Bolin 61dfe0b86c chore: clean up argument-comment lint and roll out all-target CI on macOS (#16054)
## Why

`argument-comment-lint` was green in CI even though the repo still had
many uncommented literal arguments. The main gap was target coverage:
the repo wrapper did not force Cargo to inspect test-only call sites, so
examples like the `latest_session_lookup_params(true, ...)` tests in
`codex-rs/tui_app_server/src/lib.rs` never entered the blocking CI path.

This change cleans up the existing backlog, makes the default repo lint
path cover all Cargo targets, and starts rolling that stricter CI
enforcement out on the platform where it is currently validated.

## What changed

- mechanically fixed existing `argument-comment-lint` violations across
the `codex-rs` workspace, including tests, examples, and benches
- updated `tools/argument-comment-lint/run-prebuilt-linter.sh` and
`tools/argument-comment-lint/run.sh` so non-`--fix` runs default to
`--all-targets` unless the caller explicitly narrows the target set
- fixed both wrappers so forwarded cargo arguments after `--` are
preserved with a single separator
- documented the new default behavior in
`tools/argument-comment-lint/README.md`
- updated `rust-ci` so the macOS lint lane keeps the plain wrapper
invocation and therefore enforces `--all-targets`, while Linux and
Windows temporarily pass `-- --lib --bins`

That temporary CI split keeps the stricter all-targets check where it is
already cleaned up, while leaving room to finish the remaining Linux-
and Windows-specific target-gated cleanup before enabling
`--all-targets` on those runners. The Linux and Windows failures on the
intermediate revision were caused by the wrapper forwarding bug, not by
additional lint findings in those lanes.

## Validation

- `bash -n tools/argument-comment-lint/run.sh`
- `bash -n tools/argument-comment-lint/run-prebuilt-linter.sh`
- shell-level wrapper forwarding check for `-- --lib --bins`
- shell-level wrapper forwarding check for `-- --tests`
- `just argument-comment-lint`
- `cargo test` in `tools/argument-comment-lint`
- `cargo test -p codex-terminal-detection`

## Follow-up

- Clean up remaining Linux-only target-gated callsites, then switch the
Linux lint lane back to the plain wrapper invocation.
- Clean up remaining Windows-only target-gated callsites, then switch
the Windows lint lane back to the plain wrapper invocation.

Michael Bolin b77fe8fefe Apply argument comment lint across codex-rs (#14652)
## Why

Once the repo-local lint exists, `codex-rs` needs to follow the
checked-in convention and CI needs to keep it from drifting. This commit
applies the fallback `/*param*/` style consistently across existing
positional literal call sites without changing those APIs.

The longer-term preference is still to avoid APIs that require comments
by choosing clearer parameter types and call shapes. This PR is
intentionally the mechanical follow-through for the places where the
existing signatures stay in place.

After rebasing onto newer `main`, the rollout also had to cover newly
introduced `tui_app_server` call sites. That made it clear the first cut
of the CI job was too expensive for the common path: it was spending
almost as much time installing `cargo-dylint` and re-testing the lint
crate as a representative test job spends running product tests. The CI
update keeps the full workspace enforcement but trims that extra
overhead from ordinary `codex-rs` PRs.

## What changed

- keep a dedicated `argument_comment_lint` job in `rust-ci`
- mechanically annotate remaining opaque positional literals across
`codex-rs` with exact `/*param*/` comments, including the rebased
`tui_app_server` call sites that now fall under the lint
- keep the checked-in style aligned with the lint policy by using
`/*param*/` and leaving string and char literals uncommented
- cache `cargo-dylint`, `dylint-link`, and the relevant Cargo
registry/git metadata in the lint job
- split changed-path detection so the lint crate's own `cargo test` step
runs only when `tools/argument-comment-lint/*` or `rust-ci.yml` changes
- continue to run the repo wrapper over the `codex-rs` workspace, so
product-code enforcement is unchanged

Most of the code changes in this commit are intentionally mechanical
comment rewrites or insertions driven by the lint itself.

## Verification

- `./tools/argument-comment-lint/run.sh --workspace`
- `cargo test -p codex-tui-app-server -p codex-tui`
- parsed `.github/workflows/rust-ci.yml` locally with PyYAML

jgershen-oai 3e96c867fe use scopes_supported for OAuth when present on MCP servers (#14419)
Fixes [#8889](https://github.com/openai/codex/issues/8889).

## Summary
- Discover and use advertised MCP OAuth `scopes_supported` when no
explicit or configured scopes are present.
- Apply the same scope precedence across `mcp add`, `mcp login`, skill
dependency auto-login, and app-server MCP OAuth login.
- Keep discovered scopes ephemeral and non-persistent.
- Retry once without scopes for CLI and skill auto-login flows if the
OAuth provider rejects discovered scopes.

## Motivation
Some MCP servers advertise the scopes they expect clients to request
during OAuth, but Codex was ignoring that metadata and typically
starting OAuth with no scopes unless the user manually passed `--scopes`
or configured `server.scopes`.

That made compliant MCP servers harder to use out of the box and is the
behavior described in
[#8889](https://github.com/openai/codex/issues/8889).

This change also brings our behavior in line with the MCP authorization
spec's scope selection guidance:

https://modelcontextprotocol.io/specification/2025-11-25/basic/authorization#scope-selection-strategy

## Behavior
Scope selection now follows this order everywhere:
1. Explicit request scopes / CLI `--scopes`
2. Configured `server.scopes`
3. Discovered `scopes_supported`
4. Legacy empty-scope behavior

Compatibility notes:
- Existing working setups keep the same behavior because explicit and
configured scopes still win.
- Discovered scopes are never written back into config or token storage.
- If discovery is missing, malformed, or empty, behavior falls back to
the previous empty-scope path.
- App-server login gets the same precedence rules, but does not add a
transparent retry path in this change.

## Implementation
- Extend streamable HTTP OAuth discovery to parse and normalize
`scopes_supported`.
- Add a shared MCP scope resolver in `core` so all login entrypoints use
the same precedence rules.
- Preserve provider callback errors from the OAuth flow so CLI/skill
flows can safely distinguish provider rejections from other failures.
- Reuse discovered scopes from the existing OAuth support check where
possible instead of persisting new config.

Eric Traut cacdae8c05 Work around crash in system-configuration library (#8954)
This is a proposed fix for #8912

Information provided by Codex:

no_proxy means “don’t use any system proxy settings for this client,”
even if macOS has proxies configured in System Settings or via
environment. On macOS, reqwest’s proxy discovery can call into the
system-configuration framework; that’s the code path that was panicking
with “Attempted to create a NULL object.” By forcing a direct connection
for the OAuth discovery request, we avoid that proxy-resolution path
entirely, so the system-configuration crate never gets invoked and the
panic disappears.

Effectively:

With proxies: reqwest asks the OS for proxy config →
system-configuration gets touched → panic.
With no_proxy: reqwest skips proxy lookup → no system-configuration call
→ no panic.
So the fix doesn’t change any MCP protocol behavior; it just prevents
the OAuth discovery probe from touching the macOS proxy APIs that are
crashing in the reported environment.

This fix changes behavior for the OAuth discovery probe used in codex
mcp list/auth status detection. With no_proxy, that probe won’t use
system or env proxy settings, so:

If a server is only reachable via a proxy, the discovery call may fail
and we’ll show auth as Unsupported/NotLoggedIn incorrectly.
If the server is reachable directly (common case), behavior is
unchanged.

As an alternative, we could try to get a fix into the
[system-configuration](https://github.com/mullvad/system-configuration-rs)
library. It looks like this library is still under development but has
slow release pace.

Gabriel Peal a5d48a775b [MCP] Allow specifying custom headers with streamable http servers (#5241)
This adds two new config fields to streamable http mcp servers:
`http_headers`: a map of key to value
`env_http_headers` a map of key to env var which will be resolved at
