## What changed
- Resolve shell and unified-exec commands against the trusted plugin roots loaded for each turn.
- Add optional `pluginId` and safe plugin-relative `scriptPath` fields to command execution items and legacy execution events, and propagate them through app-server notifications.
- Include the attribution in command execution analytics while rejecting absolute, unsafe, and unattributed script paths.
## Testing
- Cover attribution for cached curated and remote plugin scripts from command execution through core and app-server events.
- Verify analytics serialization and unsafe-path filtering.
GitOrigin-RevId: 02fac3a233284ccfc6642fa502a95f1881dba83d
## What changed
- Build a set of active, verified curated and remote plugin roots from loaded plugins.
- Resolve direct and safely wrapped script commands to a plugin ID and normalized plugin-relative path.
- Leave complex or ambiguous commands, local overrides, missing files, overlapping roots, and symlink escapes unattributed.
- Add a shared validator for the safe cross-platform shape of serialized plugin-relative paths.
## Testing
- Cover trusted-root selection, supported interpreters and shell wrappers, normalized paths, and fail-closed cases.
GitOrigin-RevId: 6e4199a241fd6dfadfec3df0845e7cb615352a49
## What changed
- Remove unused APIs and test helpers across the Rust workspace.
- Route Linux sandbox test setup through the shared exec request path.
- Drop dependencies that became unnecessary after the cleanup.

## Why
Audio variants were available in the user-input protocol but were replaced with unsupported-input placeholders instead of being sent to the model.
## What changed
- Serialize audio data URLs as `input_audio` content and convert local `wav`, `mp3`, `m4a`, `webm`, and `ogg` files to labeled data URLs.
- Validate and canonicalize base64 audio before requests, enforce the 50 MiB input limit, and replace invalid, unsupported, or oversized audio with explanatory text.
- Preserve audio attachments when mapping response items back to user-message events and document the app-server input variants.
## Testing
- Add unit coverage for local-file conversion, data URL validation, size and format errors, event mapping, and attachment extraction.
- Add client tests that verify data URL and local audio payloads sent to the Responses API.
GitOrigin-RevId: f72cd6b6e43ab12757eeb47621b1d670594ac7d9
## What changed
- Remove `template_id` from MCP tool call items and lifecycle events.
- Remove `templateId` from app-server `McpToolCallAppContext` responses and generated schemas.
- Update protocol conversions, documentation, and existing test expectations for the revised metadata shape.
GitOrigin-RevId: f2b1304eadff661eec3966673ea71206b1542b98
## What changed
- Define `SleepItem` in `codex-extension-items` and carry `clock.sleep` events through `TurnItem::Extension`.
- Preserve sleep persistence, thread-history reconstruction, and the app-server's `type: "sleep"` schema while reusing the extension-owned type.
## Testing
- Add serialization coverage for the `clock.sleep` extension wire shape and its protocol wrapper.
- Update sleep lifecycle and thread-history tests to exercise the extension-owned item.
GitOrigin-RevId: 34bb33ed9b90a09bf4744aafdb56e019c717a168
## Why
Standalone web search can return structured result DTOs separately from its
model-facing text output. App-server clients need access to that data without
coupling Codex to every result type or field.
## What changed
- Preserve the optional `results` array from `/v1/alpha/search` as opaque JSON
through web-search completion events, thread history, and app-server
`webSearch` items.
- Keep responses from older endpoints compatible when `results` is absent, and
allow clients to ignore result types and fields they do not understand.
- Regenerate the protocol schemas and TypeScript definitions for the optional
field.
## Testing
- Cover responses with missing, empty, and forward-compatible result payloads.
- Verify standalone web-search results round-trip through app-server item
notifications and thread-item conversion.
GitOrigin-RevId: 739ef5694ece5733f7b8749ec41d6bfa3f33c8c5
## What changed
- Add a `ResponseItemId` type that generates item-specific prefixes with UUIDv7 suffixes and use it across response items.
- Keep deserialization permissive for legacy histories, but omit empty or unprefixed item IDs from HTTP and WebSocket requests.
- Export the new type in the generated TypeScript protocol schema.
## Testing
- Cover prefixed ID generation, legacy deserialization, prefix recognition, and outbound request filtering.
GitOrigin-RevId: 0209fe430c826d0ae88bc4648652c4ebf390c4a4
## Description
Use UUIDv7 for item IDs generated locally in `codex-protocol`.
This covers user messages, agent messages, hook prompts, and context
compaction items. These IDs are generated once and carried through item
lifecycle, so this only changes the UUID version. It keeps generated
item IDs consistent with thread and turn IDs.
## Description
This PR moves review-mode markers onto canonical `TurnItem` lifecycle:
- `TurnItem::EnteredReviewMode`
- `TurnItem::ExitedReviewMode`
Core now emits `ItemStarted` / `ItemCompleted` for both. The completed
items map back into the existing `EnteredReviewMode` /
`ExitedReviewMode` events, so raw core event consumers and legacy
rollout persistence keep seeing the old events.
This is the compatibility layer needed before paginated rollouts persist
review markers as `ItemCompleted(TurnItem)`.
## Why
Review markers were one of the remaining app-server thread items created
directly from legacy events. Giving them canonical items lets paginated
history persist stable turn/item IDs without changing legacy rollouts.
## What changed
- Added canonical review-mode `TurnItem`s and switched review flow to
emit their lifecycle.
- Added completed-item → legacy review event mappings with stable
turn/item IDs.
- Switched app-server live notifications to the generic canonical item
path and kept legacy replay compatible with old payloads.
- Updated `ThreadHistoryBuilder` to replay canonical review items even
though review turns still do not emit `TurnStarted`.
## Description
This PR migrates standalone web search onto the extension-owned
turn-item path introduced in #31283.
Standalone web search now emits `ExtensionItem::WebSearch` through
generic `TurnItem::Extension`, while app-server still exposes the
existing typed `ThreadItem::WebSearch` JSON shape. Hosted Responses API
web search stays on core-owned `TurnItem::WebSearch`.
## What changed
- Added `web_search::WebSearchItem` and `WebSearchAction` to
`codex-extension-items` under the stable `web.search` kind.
- Collapsed `ExtensionTurnItem` to generic `{ item, legacy_events }` now
that no typed extension special cases remain.
- Kept the existing `WebSearchBegin` / `WebSearchEnd` compatibility
events and canonical-first ordering.
- Updated app-server projection/history and generated TypeScript; the
app-server JSON schema is unchanged.
## Description
This PR adds a `codex-extension-items` crate for extension-owned
`TurnItem` schemas, and updates standalone image generation to start
using it via `TurnItem::Extension`.
This gives us a way to prevent Core from having to be aware of all
extension items. App-server still exposes the existing public
`ThreadItem::ImageGeneration` shape, now by wrapping the same shared
`image_generation::ImageGenerationItem` type.
The new `codex-extension-items` crate is necessary because the image gen
extension item is used by:
- `codex-image-generation-extension`, which produces it.
- `codex-tools / core`, which carry it generically.
- `codex-protocol`, which serializes it into lifecycle events and
rollouts.
- `app-server protocol`, which wraps it in public
`ThreadItem::ImageGeneration`
```
extension implementation
↓
codex-extension-items
↓
protocol / tools / app-server
```
We keep the hosted Responses API image generation as
`TurnItem::ImageGeneration` because core still owns its persistence and
legacy fanout.
### Before
Standalone image generation is implemented as an extension, but its item
representation previously lived in the core protocol. This sets the
precedent that core is aware of all extension items, which would be good
to avoid.
```
image-gen extension
→ constructs codex_protocol::ImageGenerationItem
→ emits ExtensionTurnItem::ImageGeneration
→ core matches ImageGeneration specially
→ protocol stores TurnItem::ImageGeneration
```
### After
```
image-gen extension
→ constructs extension-owned ImageGenerationItem
→ emits generic ExtensionItem
→ core transports/persists it generically
→ app-server wraps ImageGenerationItem as ThreadItem::ImageGeneration
```
Future extension items can have typed app-server APIs without adding a
new `TurnItem` variant, `ExtensionTurnItem` variant, or core emitter
match arm.
## What changed
- Added `codex-extension-items` with the closed `ExtensionItem` enum and
shared `image_generation::ImageGenerationItem` schema.
- Added generic `TurnItem::Extension(ExtensionItem)` and
`ExtensionTurnItem::Extension { item, legacy_events }` paths.
- Updated standalone image generation to emit a typed extension item and
provide its existing legacy `ImageGenerationBegin` /
`ImageGenerationEnd` events explicitly.
- Kept canonical lifecycle ordering: core emits `ItemStarted` /
`ItemCompleted` before extension-provided legacy events.
## Follow-up
Standalone web search still uses its typed special-case path. Migrating
it later would let `ExtensionTurnItem` collapse into a single
extension-item struct.
## Description
This PR adds legacy `EventMsg` mappings for the `TurnItem` types
introduced in [#30282](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/30282):
- `CommandExecution`
- `DynamicToolCall`
- `CollabAgentToolCall`
- `SubAgentActivity`
When their producers move to canonical `ItemStarted` / `ItemCompleted`,
raw core event consumers can still receive the existing begin/end-style
events. The canonical item lifecycle remains the live source of truth.
We also record the mapped legacy events in rollout trace so the producer
migration preserves the existing tool-runtime trace entries.
## Why
This is the compatibility layer for the follow-up producer migrations.
Splitting it out first keeps each producer PR small and keeps the legacy
mapping in one place.
## What changed
- Added `TurnItem` → legacy `EventMsg` mappings in
`protocol/src/legacy_events.rs`.
- Added the command execution status conversion used by the exec
mapping.
- Added focused coverage for command execution and dynamic tool
mappings.
## Stack
1. [#30956](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/30956) — isolate legacy
item fanout ← **this PR**
2. [#30283](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/30283) — emit canonical
`TurnItem` lifecycle
3. [#30188](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/30188) — persist
canonical items for paginated threads
## Description
Move legacy `EventMsg` projection code out of the canonical item and
protocol schema modules into `protocol/src/legacy_events.rs`.
This is a behavior-neutral extraction. It keeps the existing
`HasLegacyEvent` API and the existing legacy projections unchanged,
while giving compatibility fanout a single home.
## Why
Canonical `TurnItem` types and wire event schemas should not own the
implementation details for legacy compatibility projections. Isolating
that code makes the boundary explicit and keeps follow-up canonical
lifecycle work easier to review.
## Description
This PR adds canonical core `TurnItem` shapes for command execution,
dynamic tool calls, collab agent tool calls, and sub-agent activity, to
be stored in the rollout file soon.
It also teaches app-server protocol / `ThreadHistoryBuilder` how to
render those items, and adds the small legacy fanout helpers needed for
existing event-based consumers. No core producer or rollout persistence
behavior changes here, that will be done in a followup.
## Making ThreadHistoryBuilder stateless
This is the first PR in a stack to make `ThreadHistoryBuilder` stateless
enough that we can materialize app-server `ThreadItem`s from only a
given slice of `RolloutItem` history, without ever needing to replay the
whole thread from the beginning.
The persisted legacy `RolloutItem::EventMsg` records are mostly shaped
like live UI events, not like materialized `ThreadItem`s. They work if
we replay the full rollout in order, but they often do not contain
enough stable identity or complete item state to project an arbitrary
suffix on its own.
A few examples:
- `UserMessageEvent` and `AgentMessageEvent` have content, but
historically do not carry the persisted app-server item ID that should
become the SQLite primary key.
- `AgentReasoningEvent` and `AgentReasoningRawContentEvent` are
fragments. `ThreadHistoryBuilder` currently merges them into the last
reasoning item, which means a slice starting in the middle of reasoning
cannot know whether to append to an earlier item or create a new one.
- `WebSearchEndEvent`, `McpToolCallEndEvent`, collab end events, and
similar legacy events can often render a final-looking item, but they
usually rely on prior replay state to know which turn owns the item.
- Begin/end legacy events are partial views of one logical item. The
builder correlates them by `call_id` and mutates prior state to
synthesize the final `ThreadItem`.
That is the problem this direction fixes. A persisted canonical
lifecycle record looks much closer to the read model we actually want
later:
```rust
ItemCompletedEvent {
turn_id,
item: TurnItem { id, ...full snapshot... },
completed_at_ms,
}
```
Once rollout has explicit `turn_id`, stable `item.id`, and a canonical
completed item snapshot, the future SQLite projector can reduce only the
new rollout suffix and upsert the affected `thread_items` rows. It no
longer needs to synthesize `item-N`, infer item ownership from the
active turn, or replay earlier events just to reconstruct the current
item snapshot.
## What changed
- Added core `TurnItem` variants and item structs for command execution,
dynamic tool calls, collab agent tool calls, and sub-agent activity.
- Added conversions from those canonical items back into the legacy
event shapes where current consumers still need them.
- Added app-server v2 `ThreadItem` conversion for the new core item
variants.
- Taught `ThreadHistoryBuilder` and rollout persistence metrics to
recognize the new item variants.
## Follow-up
The next PR https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/30283 switches the live
core producers for these item families onto canonical `ItemStarted` /
`ItemCompleted` events.
## Why
MCP tool-call events need to expose trusted app identity and action
metadata directly so v2 clients do not have to infer it from tool names
or resource URIs.
## What changed
- Add optional `appName`, `templateId`, and `actionName` fields to MCP
tool-call `appContext`.
- Populate `appName` and `templateId` from trusted Codex Apps metadata,
and derive `actionName` from the trusted app resource metadata.
- Preserve all three fields through core events, legacy protocol events,
persisted thread history, resume redaction, and app-server v2 responses.
- Document the public `appContext` fields in
`codex-rs/app-server/README.md`.
- Regenerate app-server JSON and TypeScript schemas and add coverage for
serialization, persistence, redaction, and metadata propagation.
## Validation

## Why
view_image needs to support foreign OS remote executors.
## What
- resolve image paths against the selected environment as `PathUri` and
read them through that environment's filesystem
- keep app-server's public path field wire-compatible as
`LegacyAppPathString`, with purpose-specific UI rendering
- cover relative and absolute target-native paths in the core
integration test and run the full `view_image` suite under wine-exec
without skips
## Description
This PR cuts Codex over from generic `ResponseItem.metadata` (introduced
here: https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/28355) to
`ResponseItem.internal_chat_message_metadata_passthrough`, which is the
blessed path and has strongly-typed keys.
For now we have to drop this MAv2 usage of `metadata`:
https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/28561 until we figure out where
that should live.
## Why
Models sometimes need to pause briefly while waiting for external work,
but using a shell command for that delay ties the wait to a process and
does not naturally resume when new turn input arrives.
## What changed
- add a built-in `sleep` tool behind the under-development `sleep_tool`
feature
- accept a bounded `duration_ms` argument, matching the millisecond
convention used by unified exec
- end the sleep early when either steered user input or mailbox input
arrives
- include elapsed wall-clock time in completed and interrupted outputs
- emit a dedicated core `SleepItem` through `item/started` and
`item/completed`
- expose the sleep item as app-server v2 `ThreadItem::Sleep` and retain
it in reconstructed thread history
- regenerate the configuration schema for the new feature flag
- regenerate app-server JSON and TypeScript schema fixtures
## Test plan

## Description
This PR adds an optional `metadata` field to `ResponseItem` for
Responses API calls. Only mechanical plumbing, no actual values
populated and sent yet. Turns out just adding a new field to
`ResponseItem` has quite a large blast radius already.
This change is backwards compatible because `metadata` is optional and
omitted when absent, so existing response items and rollout history
without it still deserialize and requests that do not set it keep the
same wire shape. For provider compatibility, we strip out `metadata`
before non-OpenAI Responses requests so Azure and AWS Bedrock never see
this field.
My followup PR here will actually make use of it to start storing and
passing along `turn_id`: https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/28360
## What changed
- Added `ResponseItemMetadata` with optional `turn_id`, plus optional
`metadata` on Responses API item variants and inter-agent communication.
- Preserved item metadata through response-item rewrites such as
truncation, missing tool-output synthesis, compaction history
rebuilding, visible-history conversion, rollout/resume, and generated
app-server schemas/types.
- Strip item metadata from non-OpenAI Responses requests while
preserving it for OpenAI-shaped requests.
- Updated the mechanical fixture/test construction churn required by the
new optional field.
## Summary
Adds an optional `clientId` field to app-server v2 `UserInput` and
carries it through the core `UserInput` model so clients can correlate
echoed user input items without relying on payload equality.
## Details
- Adds `client_id: Option<String>` to core `UserInput` variants.
- Exposes the v2 app-server field as `clientId` on the wire and in
generated TypeScript.
- Preserves the id when converting between app-server v2 and core
protocol types.
- Regenerates app-server schema fixtures.
## Validation
- `just fmt`
- `just write-app-server-schema`
- `cargo test -p codex-app-server-protocol`
- `cargo test -p codex-protocol`
- `just fix -p codex-app-server-protocol`
- `just fix -p codex-protocol`
- `git diff --check`
Add owning plugin id to MCP tool call items so we can better filter them
at plugin level.
## Summary
- add optional `plugin_id` to MCP tool-call items and legacy begin/end
events
- propagate plugin metadata into emitted core items and app-server v2
`ThreadItem::McpToolCall`
- preserve plugin ids through app-server replay/redaction paths and
regenerate v2 schema fixtures
## Testing
- `just write-app-server-schema`
- `just fmt`
- `just fix -p codex-core`
- `cargo test -p codex-protocol -p codex-app-server-protocol`
- `cargo test -p codex-app-server-protocol`

- `cargo check -p codex-tui --tests`
- `cargo check -p codex-app-server --tests`
- `git diff --check`
## Notes
- `just fix -p codex-core` completed with two non-fatal
`too_many_arguments` warnings on the touched MCP notification helpers.
- A broader `cargo test -p codex-core` run passed core unit tests, then
hit shell/sandbox/snapshot failures in the integration target.
- A broader app-server downstream run hit the existing
`in_process::tests::in_process_start_clamps_zero_channel_capacity` stack
overflow; `cargo test -p codex-exec` also hit the existing sandbox
expectation mismatch in
`thread_lifecycle_params_include_legacy_sandbox_when_no_active_profile`.
## Summary
- Add optional image detail to user image inputs across core, app-server
v2, thread history/event mapping, and the generated app-server
schemas/types.
- Preserve requested detail when serializing Responses image inputs:
omitted detail stays on the existing `high` default, while explicit
`original` keeps local images on the original-resolution path.
- Support `high`/`original` consistently for tool image outputs,
including MCP `codex/imageDetail`, code-mode image helpers, and
`view_image`.
## Why
`McpToolCall` was still an app-server item synthesized from deprecated
legacy begin/end events. Recent item migrations moved this ownership
into core `TurnItem`s, so MCP tool calls now follow the same canonical
lifecycle and leave legacy events as compatibility fanout.
Keeping the core item close to the v2 `ThreadItem::McpToolCall` shape
also avoids spreading MCP result semantics across app-server conversion
code. Core now owns whether a completed call is `completed` or `failed`,
and whether the payload is a tool result or an error.
## What changed
- Added core `TurnItem::McpToolCall` with flattened `server`, `tool`,
`arguments`, `status`, `result`, and `error` fields.
- Updated MCP tool call emitters, including MCP resource tools, to emit
`ItemStarted`/`ItemCompleted` around directly constructed core MCP
items.
- Updated app-server v2 conversion to project the core MCP item into
`ThreadItem::McpToolCall` without deriving status or splitting `Result`
locally.
- Ignored live deprecated MCP legacy fanout in app-server v2 to avoid
duplicate item notifications, while keeping thread history replay on the
legacy event path.
## Verification
- `cargo test -p codex-protocol`
- `cargo test -p codex-app-server-protocol`
- `cargo test -p codex-core --lib mcp_tool_call`
- `cargo check -p codex-app-server`
- `cargo test -p codex-app-server
mcp_tool_call_completion_notification_contains_truncated_large_result`
## Why
Image-view results should be represented as a core-produced turn item
instead of being reconstructed by app-server. At the same time, existing
rollout/history paths still understand the legacy `ViewImageToolCall`
event, so this keeps that event as compatibility output generated from
the new item lifecycle.
## What changed
- Added `TurnItem::ImageView` to `codex-protocol`.
- Emitted image-view item start/completion directly from the core
`view_image` handler.
- Kept `ViewImageToolCall` as a legacy event and generate it from
completed `TurnItem::ImageView` items.
- Kept `thread_history.rs` on the legacy `ViewImageToolCall` replay
path, with `ImageView` item lifecycle events ignored there.
- Updated app-server protocol conversion, rollout persistence, and
affected exhaustive event matches for the new item plus legacy fan-out
shape.
## Verification
- `cargo test -p codex-protocol -p codex-app-server-protocol -p

- `cargo test -p codex-core --test all

-p codex-app-server -p codex-rollout -p codex-rollout-trace -p

- `git diff --check`
## Why
Apply-patch file changes are now part of the core turn item stream, so
v2 clients can consume the same first-class item lifecycle path used by
other turn items instead of relying on app-server-specific remapping
from legacy patch events.
## What changed
- Added a core `TurnItem::FileChange` carrying apply-patch changes and
completion metadata.
- Updated the apply-patch tool emitter to send `ItemStarted` /
`ItemCompleted` with the new `FileChange` item while preserving legacy
`PatchApplyBegin` / `PatchApplyEnd` fan-out.
- Updated app-server v2 conversion to render the new core item directly
and stopped `event_mapping` from remapping old patch begin/end events
into item notifications.
- Kept thread history reconstruction based on the existing old
apply-patch events for rollout compatibility.
## Verification
- `cargo test -p codex-protocol -p codex-app-server-protocol`
- `cargo test -p codex-core --test all
apply_patch_tool_executes_and_emits_patch_events`
- `cargo test -p codex-app-server bespoke_event_handling`
## Why
`argument-comment-lint` was green in CI even though the repo still had
many uncommented literal arguments. The main gap was target coverage:
the repo wrapper did not force Cargo to inspect test-only call sites, so
examples like the `latest_session_lookup_params(true, ...)` tests in
`codex-rs/tui_app_server/src/lib.rs` never entered the blocking CI path.
This change cleans up the existing backlog, makes the default repo lint
path cover all Cargo targets, and starts rolling that stricter CI
enforcement out on the platform where it is currently validated.
## What changed
- mechanically fixed existing `argument-comment-lint` violations across
the `codex-rs` workspace, including tests, examples, and benches
- updated `tools/argument-comment-lint/run-prebuilt-linter.sh` and
`tools/argument-comment-lint/run.sh` so non-`--fix` runs default to
`--all-targets` unless the caller explicitly narrows the target set
- fixed both wrappers so forwarded cargo arguments after `--` are
preserved with a single separator
- documented the new default behavior in
`tools/argument-comment-lint/README.md`
- updated `rust-ci` so the macOS lint lane keeps the plain wrapper
invocation and therefore enforces `--all-targets`, while Linux and
Windows temporarily pass `-- --lib --bins`
That temporary CI split keeps the stricter all-targets check where it is
already cleaned up, while leaving room to finish the remaining Linux-
and Windows-specific target-gated cleanup before enabling
`--all-targets` on those runners. The Linux and Windows failures on the
intermediate revision were caused by the wrapper forwarding bug, not by
additional lint findings in those lanes.
## Validation
- `bash -n tools/argument-comment-lint/run.sh`
- `bash -n tools/argument-comment-lint/run-prebuilt-linter.sh`
- shell-level wrapper forwarding check for `-- --lib --bins`
- shell-level wrapper forwarding check for `-- --tests`
- `just argument-comment-lint`
- `cargo test` in `tools/argument-comment-lint`
- `cargo test -p codex-terminal-detection`
## Follow-up
- Clean up remaining Linux-only target-gated callsites, then switch the
Linux lint lane back to the plain wrapper invocation.
- Clean up remaining Windows-only target-gated callsites, then switch
the Windows lint lane back to the plain wrapper invocation.
## Summary
Persist Stop-hook continuation prompts as `user` messages instead of
hidden `developer` messages + some requested integration tests
This is a followup to @pakrym 's comment in
https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/14532 to make sure stop-block
continuation prompts match training for turn loops
- Stop continuation now writes `<hook_prompt hook_run_id="...">stop
hook's user prompt<hook_prompt>`
- Introduces quick-xml dependency, though we already indirectly depended
on it anyway via syntect
- This PR only has about 500 lines of actual logic changes, the rest is
tests/schema
## Testing
Example run (with a sessionstart hook and 3 stop hooks) - this shows
context added by session start, then two stop hooks sending their own
additional prompts in a new turn. The model responds with a single
message addressing both. Then when that turn ends, the hooks detect that
they just ran using `stop_hook_active` and decide not to infinite loop
test files for this (unzip, move codex -> .codex):

```
TLDR: use new message phase field emitted by preamble-supported models
to determine whether an AgentMessage is mid-turn commentary. if so,
restore the status indicator afterwards to indicate the turn has not
completed.
### Problem
`commit_tick` hides the status indicator while streaming assistant text.
For preamble-capable models, that text can be commentary mid-turn, so
hiding was correct during streaming but restore timing mattered:
- restoring too aggressively caused jitter/flashing
- not restoring caused indicator to stay hidden before subsequent work
(tool calls, web search, etc.)
### Fix
- Add optional `phase` to `AgentMessageItem` and propagate it from
`ResponseItem::Message`
- Keep indicator hidden during streamed commit ticks, restore only when:
- assistant item completes as `phase=commentary`, and
- stream queues are idle + task is still running.
- Treat `phase=None` as final-answer behavior (no restore) to keep
existing behavior for non-preamble models
### Tests
Add/update tests for:
- no idle-tick restore without commentary completion
- commentary completion restoring status before tool begin
- snapshot coverage for preamble/status behavior
## Summary
- Stream proposed plans in Plan Mode using `<proposed_plan>` tags parsed
in core, emitting plan deltas plus a plan `ThreadItem`, while stripping
tags from normal assistant output.
- Persist plan items and rebuild them on resume so proposed plans show
in thread history.
- Wire plan items/deltas through app-server protocol v2 and render a
dedicated proposed-plan view in the TUI, including the “Implement this
plan?” prompt only when a plan item is present.
## Changes
### Core (`codex-rs/core`)
- Added a generic, line-based tag parser that buffers each line until it
can disprove a tag prefix; implements auto-close on `finish()` for
unterminated tags. `codex-rs/core/src/tagged_block_parser.rs`
- Refactored proposed plan parsing to wrap the generic parser.
`codex-rs/core/src/proposed_plan_parser.rs`
- In plan mode, stream assistant deltas as:
- **Normal text** → `AgentMessageContentDelta`
- **Plan text** → `PlanDelta` + `TurnItem::Plan` start/completion
(`codex-rs/core/src/codex.rs`)
- Final plan item content is derived from the completed assistant
message (authoritative), not necessarily the concatenated deltas.
- Strips `<proposed_plan>` blocks from assistant text in plan mode so
tags don’t appear in normal messages.
(`codex-rs/core/src/stream_events_utils.rs`)
- Persist `ItemCompleted` events only for plan items for rollout replay.
(`codex-rs/core/src/rollout/policy.rs`)
- Guard `update_plan` tool in Plan Mode with a clear error message.
(`codex-rs/core/src/tools/handlers/plan.rs`)
- Updated Plan Mode prompt to:
- keep `<proposed_plan>` out of non-final reasoning/preambles
- require exact tag formatting
- allow only one `<proposed_plan>` block per turn
(`codex-rs/core/templates/collaboration_mode/plan.md`)
### Protocol / App-server protocol
- Added `TurnItem::Plan` and `PlanDeltaEvent` to core protocol items.
(`codex-rs/protocol/src/items.rs`, `codex-rs/protocol/src/protocol.rs`)
- Added v2 `ThreadItem::Plan` and `PlanDeltaNotification` with
EXPERIMENTAL markers and note that deltas may not match the final plan
item. (`codex-rs/app-server-protocol/src/protocol/v2.rs`)
- Added plan delta route in app-server protocol common mapping.
(`codex-rs/app-server-protocol/src/protocol/common.rs`)
- Rebuild plan items from persisted `ItemCompleted` events on resume.
(`codex-rs/app-server-protocol/src/protocol/thread_history.rs`)
### App-server
- Forward plan deltas to v2 clients and map core plan items to v2 plan
items. (`codex-rs/app-server/src/bespoke_event_handling.rs`,
`codex-rs/app-server/src/codex_message_processor.rs`)
- Added v2 plan item tests.
(`codex-rs/app-server/tests/suite/v2/plan_item.rs`)
### TUI
- Added a dedicated proposed plan history cell with special background
and padding, and moved “• Proposed Plan” outside the highlighted block.
(`codex-rs/tui/src/history_cell.rs`, `codex-rs/tui/src/style.rs`)
- Only show “Implement this plan?” when a plan item exists.
(`codex-rs/tui/src/chatwidget.rs`,
`codex-rs/tui/src/chatwidget/tests.rs`)
### Docs / Misc
- Updated protocol docs to mention plan deltas.
(`codex-rs/docs/protocol_v1.md`)
- Minor plumbing updates in exec/debug clients to tolerate plan deltas.
(`codex-rs/debug-client/src/reader.rs`, `codex-rs/exec/...`)
## Tests
- Added core integration tests:
- Plan mode strips plan from agent messages.
- Missing `</proposed_plan>` closes at end-of-message.
(`codex-rs/core/tests/suite/items.rs`)
- Added unit tests for generic tag parser (prefix buffering, non-tag
lines, auto-close). (`codex-rs/core/src/tagged_block_parser.rs`)
- Existing app-server plan item tests in v2.
(`codex-rs/app-server/tests/suite/v2/plan_item.rs`)
## Notes / Behavior
- Plan output no longer appears in standard assistant text in Plan Mode;
it streams via `PlanDelta` and completes as a `TurnItem::Plan`.
- The final plan item content is authoritative and may diverge from
streamed deltas (documented as experimental).
- Reasoning summaries are not filtered; prompt instructs the model not
to include `<proposed_plan>` outside the final plan message.
### Summary
- Parse all `web_search` tool actions (`search`, `find_in_page`,
`open_page`).
- Previously we only parsed + displayed `search`, which made the TUI
appear to pause when the other actions were being used.
- Show in progress `web_search` calls as `Searching the web`
- Previously we only showed completed tool calls
### Tests
Added + updated tests, tested locally
### Follow ups
Update VSCode extension to display these as well
## Summary
- Make `TextElement` placeholders private and add a text-backed accessor
to avoid assuming `Some`.
- Since they are optional in the protocol, we want to make sure any
accessors properly handle the None case (getting the placeholder using
the byte range in the text)
- Preserve placeholders during protocol/app-server conversions using the
accessor fallback.
- Update TUI composer/remap logic and tests to use the new
constructor/accessor.
The second part of breaking up PR
https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/9116
Summary:
- Add `TextElement` / `ByteRange` to protocol user inputs and user
message events with defaults.
- Thread `text_elements` through app-server v1/v2 request handling and
history rebuild.
- Preserve UI metadata only in user input/events (not `ContentItem`)
while keeping local image attachments in user events for rehydration.
Details:
- Protocol: `UserInput::Text` carries `text_elements`;
`UserMessageEvent` carries `text_elements` + `local_images`.
Serialization includes empty vectors for backward compatibility.
- app-server-protocol: v1 defines `V1TextElement` / `V1ByteRange` in
camelCase with conversions; v2 uses its own camelCase wrapper.
- app-server: v1/v2 input mapping includes `text_elements`; thread
history rebuilds include them.
- Core: user event emission preserves UI metadata while model history
stays clean; history replay round-trips the metadata.
A partner is consuming our generated JSON schema bundle for app-server
and identified a few issues:
- not all polymorphic / one-of types have a type descriminator
- `"$ref": "#/definitions/v2/SandboxPolicy"` is missing
- "Option<>" is an invalid schema name, and also unnecessary
This PR:
- adds the type descriminator to the various types that are missing it
except for `SessionSource` and `SubAgentSource` because they are
serialized to disk (adding this would break backwards compat for
resume), and they should not be necessary to consume for an integration
with app-server.
- removes the special handling in `export.rs` of various types like
SandboxPolicy, which turned out to be unnecessary and incorrect
- filters out `Option<>` which was auto-generated for request params
that don't need a body
For context, we currently pull in wayyy more types than we need through
the `EventMsg` god object which we are **not** planning to expose in API
v2 (this is how I suspect `SessionSource` and `SubAgentSource` are being
pulled in). But until we have all the necessary v2 notifications in
place that will allow us to remove `EventMsg`, we will keep exporting it
for now.
1. Adds AgentMessage, Reasoning, WebSearch items.
2. Switches the ResponseItem parsing to use new items and then also emit
3. Removes user-item kind and filters out "special" (environment) user
items when returning to clients.
Adds a new ItemStarted event and delivers UserMessage as the first item
type (more to come).
Renames `InputItem` to `UserInput` considering we're using the `Item`
suffix for actual items.
