## What changed
- Keep `!`, `/`, and `?` prefixes literal in plain-text composers instead of activating command modes or shortcuts.
- Preserve buffered characters when changing Vim mode, cancelling a draft, or pressing Enter during a paste burst.
- Show over-limit errors in embedded composer footers, retain the rejected draft, and schedule redraws when the message expires.
- Clear stale validation errors when replacing a draft or switching form fields.
## Testing
- Add coverage for literal prefixes, buffered typing, single-character paste lines, retained over-limit drafts, and clearing validation errors between fields.

## Why
Cloud task requests can use saved ChatGPT credentials, so their destination must be constrained before authentication is loaded or any request is made.
## What changed
- Validate `CODEX_CLOUD_TASKS_BASE_URL` against trusted ChatGPT HTTPS origins on port 443 and reject URLs containing user information, queries, or fragments.
- Disable redirects for cloud task backend and environment-discovery clients so credentials are never forwarded to a redirect destination.
- Normalize the validated base URL before configuring authentication and HTTP clients.
## Testing
Add a CLI integration test that verifies a custom cloud backend is rejected without receiving a request, while the staging origin continues to use explicit token authentication.
GitOrigin-RevId: f0dddf363b4e44ea3530f81d9a817e978c15ead2
## Why
Auth routing represented the default proxy policy as an absent configuration,
leaving consumers to reconstruct the fallback HTTP client independently. Carry
the application's resolved policy explicitly so auth and related requests use
the same client configuration.
## What changed
- Build `AuthRouteConfig` from the resolved `HttpClientFactory` for both
`ReqwestDefault` and `RespectSystemProxy` policies.
- Pass that route configuration through login, auth, cloud task, and cloud
configuration flows, and reuse its factory when loading cloud configuration.
- Log cloud-task configuration load failures before falling back to the
transport-default proxy policy.
## Testing
Extended configuration tests to verify that effective and bootstrap auth routes
select the expected proxy policy when system-proxy support is enabled or
disabled by feature requirements.
GitOrigin-RevId: d03802e2660f5cf6d940e8e718ec5c82ede7eab1
## What changed
Remove ignored tests for cloud-task composer rendering, delegated approval
forwarding, and unified-exec session pruning, along with their unused imports.
GitOrigin-RevId: 66ae0d3b672f6471a52ba0479bbd8119e12182f1
## What changed
- Build a route-aware API client from the cloud backend's configured HTTP
factory and reuse it for environment listing and autodetection.
- Replace direct `reqwest` environment requests with a small injectable HTTP
boundary while preserving status, content-type, body, and header handling.
- Centralize asynchronous environment-list loading around the initialized
backend context.
## Testing
- Add coverage for production header forwarding and response decoding.
- Verify repository-specific lookup, global fallback, endpoint selection,
deduplication, and merged environment metadata with a fake HTTP client.
GitOrigin-RevId: 2e6812015ec3eb01773184541a1fad135ed53edb
## Why
Backend-backed features need to use the same outbound routing configuration as the rest of Codex.
## What changed
- Build the backend client on a route-aware client pool supplied by `HttpClientFactory`.
- Pass the configured factory through app-server account requests, cloud config loading, cloud tasks, and memory rate-limit checks.
- Preserve task query encoding, authentication headers, JSON request bodies, and ChatGPT cookie handling during the migration.
## Testing
- Add backend-client tests for proxy-policy propagation, task query encoding, bearer authentication, and JSON request bodies.
GitOrigin-RevId: c17d162e0dce9cec758df7cdeecf982207c6512b
## Why
First-party async traits should expose their `Send` contracts explicitly
without requiring `async_trait`. This completes the migration pattern
established in #27303 and #27304.
## What changed
- Replaced the remaining first-party `async_trait` traits with native
return-position `impl Future + Send` where statically dispatched and
explicit boxed `Send` futures where object safety is required.
- Kept implementations behavior-preserving, outlining existing async
bodies into inherent methods where that keeps the diff reviewable.
- Removed all direct first-party `async-trait` dependencies and the
workspace dependency declaration.
- Added a cargo-deny policy that permits `async-trait` only through the
remaining transitive wrapper crates.
- Updated `rand` from 0.8.5 to 0.8.6 to resolve RUSTSEC-2026-0097 and
keep the full cargo-deny check passing.
## Validation
- `just test -p codex-exec-server`: 216 passed, 2 skipped.
- `just test -p codex-model-provider`: 39 passed.
- `just test -p codex-core` and `just test`: changed tests passed;
remaining failures are environment-sensitive suites unrelated to this
migration.
- `cargo deny check`
- `just fix`
- `just fmt`
- `cargo shear`
- `just bazel-lock-check`
## Summary
This PR fully reverts the previously merged Agent Identity runtime
integration from the old stack:
https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/17387/changes
It removes the Codex-side task lifecycle wiring, rollout/session
persistence, feature flag plumbing, lazy `auth.json` mutation,
background task auth paths, and request callsite changes introduced by
that stack.
This leaves the repo in a clean pre-AgentIdentity integration state so
the follow-up PRs can reintroduce the pieces in smaller reviewable
layers.
## Stack
1. This PR: full revert
2. https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/18871: move Agent Identity
business logic into a crate
3. https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/18785: add explicit
AgentIdentity auth mode and startup task allocation
4. https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/18811: migrate auth callsites
through AuthProvider
## Testing
Tests: targeted Rust checks, cargo-shear, Bazel lock check, and CI.
## Summary
- reduce public module visibility across Rust crates, preferring private
or crate-private modules with explicit crate-root public exports
- update external call sites and tests to use the intended public crate
APIs instead of reaching through module trees
- add the module visibility guideline to AGENTS.md
## Validation
- `cargo check --workspace --all-targets --message-format=short` passed
before the final fix/format pass
- `just fix` completed successfully
- `just fmt` completed successfully
- `git diff --check` passed
## Why
`codex-core` was re-exporting APIs owned by sibling `codex-*` crates,
which made downstream crates depend on `codex-core` as a proxy module
instead of the actual owner crate.
Removing those forwards makes crate boundaries explicit and lets leaf
crates drop unnecessary `codex-core` dependencies. In this PR, this
reduces the dependency on `codex-core` to `codex-login` in the following
files:
```
codex-rs/backend-client/Cargo.toml
codex-rs/mcp-server/tests/common/Cargo.toml
```
## What
- Remove `codex-rs/core/src/lib.rs` re-exports for symbols owned by
`codex-login`, `codex-mcp`, `codex-rollout`, `codex-analytics`,
`codex-protocol`, `codex-shell-command`, `codex-sandboxing`,
`codex-tools`, and `codex-utils-path`.
- Delete the `default_client` forwarding shim in `codex-rs/core`.
- Update in-crate and downstream callsites to import directly from the
owning `codex-*` crate.
- Add direct Cargo dependencies where callsites now target the owner
crate, and remove `codex-core` from `codex-rs/backend-client`.
## Why
`codex-cloud-tasks-client` was mixing two different roles: the real HTTP
client and the mock implementation used by tests and local mock mode.
Keeping both in the same crate forced Cargo feature toggles and Bazel
`crate_features` just to pick an implementation.
This change keeps `codex-cloud-tasks-client` focused on the shared API
surface and real backend client, and moves the mock implementation into
its own crate so we can remove those feature permutations cleanly.
## What changed
- add a new `codex-cloud-tasks-mock-client` crate that owns `MockClient`
- remove the `mock` and `online` features from
`codex-cloud-tasks-client`
- make `codex-cloud-tasks-client` unconditionally depend on
`codex-backend-client` and export `HttpClient` directly
- gate the mock-mode path in `codex-cloud-tasks` behind
`#[cfg(debug_assertions)]`, so release builds always initialize the real
HTTP client
- update `codex-cloud-tasks` and its tests to use
`codex-cloud-tasks-mock-client::MockClient` wherever mock behavior is
needed
- remove the matching Bazel `crate_features` override and shrink the
manifest verifier allowlist accordingly
## How tested
- `cargo test -p codex-cloud-tasks-client`
- `cargo test -p codex-cloud-tasks-mock-client`
- `cargo test -p codex-cloud-tasks`

* __->__ #16456
This is a follow-up to https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/15922. That
previous PR deleted the old `tui` directory and left the new
`tui_app_server` directory in place. This PR renames `tui_app_server` to
`tui` and fixes up all references.
## Why
`argument-comment-lint` was green in CI even though the repo still had
many uncommented literal arguments. The main gap was target coverage:
the repo wrapper did not force Cargo to inspect test-only call sites, so
examples like the `latest_session_lookup_params(true, ...)` tests in
`codex-rs/tui_app_server/src/lib.rs` never entered the blocking CI path.
This change cleans up the existing backlog, makes the default repo lint
path cover all Cargo targets, and starts rolling that stricter CI
enforcement out on the platform where it is currently validated.
## What changed
- mechanically fixed existing `argument-comment-lint` violations across
the `codex-rs` workspace, including tests, examples, and benches
- updated `tools/argument-comment-lint/run-prebuilt-linter.sh` and
`tools/argument-comment-lint/run.sh` so non-`--fix` runs default to
`--all-targets` unless the caller explicitly narrows the target set
- fixed both wrappers so forwarded cargo arguments after `--` are
preserved with a single separator
- documented the new default behavior in
`tools/argument-comment-lint/README.md`
- updated `rust-ci` so the macOS lint lane keeps the plain wrapper
invocation and therefore enforces `--all-targets`, while Linux and
Windows temporarily pass `-- --lib --bins`
That temporary CI split keeps the stricter all-targets check where it is
already cleaned up, while leaving room to finish the remaining Linux-
and Windows-specific target-gated cleanup before enabling
`--all-targets` on those runners. The Linux and Windows failures on the
intermediate revision were caused by the wrapper forwarding bug, not by
additional lint findings in those lanes.
## Validation
- `bash -n tools/argument-comment-lint/run.sh`
- `bash -n tools/argument-comment-lint/run-prebuilt-linter.sh`
- shell-level wrapper forwarding check for `-- --lib --bins`
- shell-level wrapper forwarding check for `-- --tests`
- `just argument-comment-lint`
- `cargo test` in `tools/argument-comment-lint`
- `cargo test -p codex-terminal-detection`
## Follow-up
- Clean up remaining Linux-only target-gated callsites, then switch the
Linux lint lane back to the plain wrapper invocation.
- Clean up remaining Windows-only target-gated callsites, then switch
the Windows lint lane back to the plain wrapper invocation.
This is the part 1 of 2 PRs that will delete the `tui` /
`tui_app_server` split. This part simply deletes the existing `tui`
directory and marks the `tui_app_server` feature flag as removed. I left
the `tui_app_server` feature flag in place for now so its presence
doesn't result in an error. It is simply ignored.
Part 2 will rename the `tui_app_server` directory `tui`. I did this as
two parts to reduce visible code churn.
- create `codex-git-utils` and move the shared git helpers into it with
file moves preserved for diff readability
- move the `GitInfo` helpers out of `core` so stacked rollout work can
depend on the shared crate without carrying its own git info module

## Why
Once the repo-local lint exists, `codex-rs` needs to follow the
checked-in convention and CI needs to keep it from drifting. This commit
applies the fallback `/*param*/` style consistently across existing
positional literal call sites without changing those APIs.
The longer-term preference is still to avoid APIs that require comments
by choosing clearer parameter types and call shapes. This PR is
intentionally the mechanical follow-through for the places where the
existing signatures stay in place.
After rebasing onto newer `main`, the rollout also had to cover newly
introduced `tui_app_server` call sites. That made it clear the first cut
of the CI job was too expensive for the common path: it was spending
almost as much time installing `cargo-dylint` and re-testing the lint
crate as a representative test job spends running product tests. The CI
update keeps the full workspace enforcement but trims that extra
overhead from ordinary `codex-rs` PRs.
## What changed
- keep a dedicated `argument_comment_lint` job in `rust-ci`
- mechanically annotate remaining opaque positional literals across
`codex-rs` with exact `/*param*/` comments, including the rebased
`tui_app_server` call sites that now fall under the lint
- keep the checked-in style aligned with the lint policy by using
`/*param*/` and leaving string and char literals uncommented
- cache `cargo-dylint`, `dylint-link`, and the relevant Cargo
registry/git metadata in the lint job
- split changed-path detection so the lint crate's own `cargo test` step
runs only when `tools/argument-comment-lint/*` or `rust-ci.yml` changes
- continue to run the repo wrapper over the `codex-rs` workspace, so
product-code enforcement is unchanged
Most of the code changes in this commit are intentionally mechanical
comment rewrites or insertions driven by the lint itself.
## Verification
- `./tools/argument-comment-lint/run.sh --workspace`
- `cargo test -p codex-tui-app-server -p codex-tui`
- parsed `.github/workflows/rust-ci.yml` locally with PyYAML

* -> #14652
* #14651
Historically we started with a CodexAuth that knew how to refresh it's
own tokens and then added AuthManager that did a different kind of
refresh (re-reading from disk).
I don't think it makes sense for both `CodexAuth` and `AuthManager` to
be mutable and contain behaviors.
Move all refresh logic into `AuthManager` and keep `CodexAuth` as a data
object.
## Problem
`codex cloud` always instantiated `AuthManager` with `File` mode,
ignoring the user's actual `cli_auth_credentials_store` setting. This
caused users with `cli_auth_credentials_store = "keyring"` (or `"auto"`)
to see "Not signed in" errors even when they had valid credentials
stored in the system keyring.
## Root cause
The code called `Config::load_from_base_config_with_overrides()` with an
empty `ConfigToml::default()`, which always returned `File` as the
default store mode instead of loading the actual user configuration.
## Solution
- **Added `util::load_cli_auth_manager()` helper**
Properly loads user config via
`load_config_as_toml_with_cli_overrides()` and extracts the
`cli_auth_credentials_store` setting before creating `AuthManager`.
- **Updated callers**
- `init_backend()` - used when starting cloud tasks UI
- `build_chatgpt_headers()` - used for API requests
## Testing
- ✅ `just fmt`
- ✅ `just fix -p codex-cloud-tasks`
- ✅ `cargo test -p codex-cloud-tasks`
## Files changed
- `codex-rs/cloud-tasks/src/lib.rs`
- `codex-rs/cloud-tasks/src/util.rs`
## Verification
Users with keyring-based auth can now run `codex cloud` successfully
without "Not signed in" errors.

This PR is a follow-up to #5591. It allows users to choose which auth
storage mode they want by using the new
`cli_auth_credentials_store_mode` config.
