Eric Traut a7913390f7 Preserve TUI drafts after app-server disconnects (#41911)
## Why

Losing an external app-server connection can leave a submission's outcome uncertain. The TUI must preserve local work without retrying it or allowing stale server events to trigger more actions.

## What changed

- Enter an offline state when an external app-server transport disconnects during startup, event streaming, or submission.
- Keep conversation drafts, queued input, expanded pastes, attachments, and agent-overview input editable while blocking submissions, remote actions, and automatic queue replay.
- Show a connection-lost notice that directs users to copy their work and relaunch, while retaining `Ctrl-C` and an empty-composer `Ctrl-D` as quit shortcuts.
- Cancel pending views and asynchronous work, and ignore stale completions after the disconnect. Embedded app-server behavior is unchanged.

## Testing

Added unit, snapshot, and pseudo-terminal coverage for lost startup and mutation replies, offline draft editing, queued-input recovery, stale-event quarantine, agent-overview behavior, and end-to-end preservation without reconnection or resubmission.

stefanstokic-oai 79b04f1ab5 Show actionable rate-limit banners in the TUI (#41742)
## What changed

- Carry optional backend-owned banner and account identity data through
`account/rateLimits/read`, filtering banners that do not match the authenticated
  account and user.
- Render supported rate-limit notices above the composer with actions for usage,
credits, resets, owner notifications, and plan management while preserving the
existing fallback UI for absent or unsupported banners.
- Refresh usage after limit errors, reject stale responses, and keep queued input
paused until recovery completes. When instructed by the banner, switch to the
first available fallback model without changing unrelated thread settings.

## Testing

- Add protocol, banner parsing and rendering, CTA, identity filtering, refresh
  ordering, fallback-model, account-change, and queued-input recovery coverage.

Eric Traut 83d1fe0e67 Remove the Plan mode composer nudge (#40200)
## What changed

- Keep the normal composer footer visible when a draft contains the word `plan`.
- Remove the contextual “Create a plan?” prompt, its Escape dismissal behavior, and its per-thread dismissal state.

## Testing

- Update wide and narrow composer snapshots to cover the standard footer for plan-related drafts.

Eric Traut 3434c2545b Preserve queued TUI input semantics (#39604)
## Why

Paste placeholders and deferred slash-command parsing can hide the meaning of an input until it is expanded or a session is configured. Draining such input as an ordinary message can accidentally treat pasted text beginning with `!` as a shell command or lose `/plan` behavior.

## What changed

- Track paste-expanded inputs that begin with `!` as literal model input through history, queue editing, retries, and startup queues.
- Defer `/plan` parsing when session or model state is unavailable, then submit it in plan mode with shell escapes disabled.
- Drain queued input only after session configuration, and keep later queued prompts pending when an initial prompt cannot be submitted.
- Suppress queue auto-send before applying a replayed thread session so input from the outgoing thread is not submitted during restoration.

## Testing

Add coverage for direct, recalled, edited, interrupted, rejected, startup-queued, and plan-mode paste flows, including placeholder collisions and rejected initial images.

Eric Traut 785ecd7452 Stop TUI chats on misalignment policy violations (#39261)
## Why

When the app server reports a misalignment policy violation, the TUI must stop the affected chat rather than allow more work to continue in it.

## What changed

- Finalize the active turn, clear queued and draft input, disable the composer, and reject further operations and interactive requests for the stopped chat.
- Interrupt an active side conversation when its parent reports the violation, and prevent queued turns, forks, approvals, or goal resumption from restarting work.
- Show a non-dismissible precaution view that directs users to start a new chat or resume another one, with agent command center navigation for remote sessions.

## Testing

Added coverage for stopped-chat behavior, parent/side-thread handling, blocked goal resumption, navigation actions, and narrow and remote-session rendering.

jif e1895710ad Fix TUI input queue handling during MCP startup (#35957)
## Why

Pending MCP server startup can outlive an agent turn. Treating its shared
running indicator as an active user turn prevents queued follow-ups and slash
commands from advancing after the turn completes.

## What changed

- Allow the input queue to drain while only MCP startup remains active.
- Keep queued input blocked while a review, foreground shell command, or
  compaction is pending or running.
- Resume queue draining after session-selection flows close.

## Testing

Add TUI tests covering queued follow-ups, slash commands, reviews, shell
commands, and compaction while MCP startup is pending.

Charlie Marsh 35eaf3ffb0 Avoid redundant TUI redraws while streaming (#34049)
## What changed

- Redraw assistant and plan stream tails only when a completed line changes the visible tail.
- Cache the first reasoning header and update the status indicator only when its visible state changes, while restoring the cached header if the indicator is recreated.
- Keep regular commit ticks able to clear stale stream tails.

## Testing

- Add coverage for unchanged partial deltas, changed newline-delimited tails, reasoning-header redraws, recreated status indicators, stale plan tails, and history-line draw scheduling.

Felipe Coury 3f0669dbd6 Make parent-owned sub-agent threads read-only in the TUI (#33841)
## Why

Multi-agent V2 spawned threads are controlled by their parent and reject direct
app-server input. The TUI should expose that ownership instead of presenting an
input flow that the server will reject.

## What changed

- Add the experimental `Thread.canAcceptDirectInput` capability for loaded
threads and populate it from the same policy used to validate `turn/start`
and `turn/steer`. Stored, unloaded threads report `null`.
- Carry the capability through TUI thread discovery, selection, startup, and
resume flows, with a compatibility fallback for older app servers.
- Present parent-owned threads as view-only, preserve drafts and queued input,
block agent-directed commands and settings shortcuts, and keep local
  navigation and inspection commands available.

## Testing

- Cover V1 writable and V2 view-only spawned threads through selection and
  resume.
- Cover composer submission paths, queued and initial input preservation,
allowed navigation commands, settings shortcuts, and the view-only UI.

Felipe Coury f46b53bd85 fix(tui): hide empty reasoning summaries (#31652)
## Why

Reasoning summaries can contain an empty HTML comment placeholder, `<!--
-->`, when a generated summary part has no prose. The TUI treated that
placeholder as visible summary content, so it leaked into both the
completed conversation history and persisted transcript. Multi-part
empty summaries could also leave later generated status headings visible
as orphaned transcript content.

## What

- Strip the empty reasoning-summary placeholder at the shared
`ReasoningSummaryCell` boundary.
- Suppress the cell when removing placeholders leaves only generated
bold status headings.
- Cover the multi-part placeholder-only shape with a rendering
regression test for both normal history and transcript output.

## How to Test

1. Start Codex TUI with reasoning summaries visible, for example with
`hide_agent_reasoning = false` and `model_reasoning_summary =
"detailed"`.
2. Run a turn that receives an empty generated reasoning-summary part.
3. Confirm that the in-progress status heading may appear while the turn
is running, but the completed history and transcript contain neither
literal `<!-- -->` tokens nor orphaned reasoning headings.
4. Confirm that a reasoning summary with actual prose still renders
normally.

The model output is nondeterministic, so the targeted regression covers
the exact multi-part placeholder shape from the report:

Eric Traut d667082322 Allow resume and settings commands during tasks and MCP startup (#29154)
## Why

The TUI treats both an active turn and MCP startup as a running task.
That currently blocks `/resume` and several settings commands even
though they do not compete with turn execution, which is especially
frustrating when MCP startup is slow.

Model, permissions, personality, and service-tier selections already
update thread settings independently of the running turn. Other clients
can send those updates mid-turn, while the current turn continues with
its captured settings. Allowing the same updates from local slash
commands makes the TUI consistent with that existing behavior.

## What changed

- Allow `/resume` while a task is running.
- Allow `/model`, `/permissions`, `/personality`, and service-tier
commands such as `/fast` while a task is running.
- Keep the existing behavior where the active turn uses its captured
settings and updates apply to subsequent turns.
- Exercise the commands under the busy state in the existing TUI tests
and retain coverage for commands that should remain blocked.

## Behavior note

Turn settings such as model selection and reasoning effort are captured
when a turn starts. Changing them during an active turn affects the next
turn, not the turn already in progress. The status bar updates
immediately, so it may temporarily display the newly selected setting
before that setting is actually in effect.

## Verification

- Focused `codex-tui` tests for resume dispatch, settings popups,
`/fast`, and disabled-command behavior.

Eric Traut c0f1ec5afd [2 of 3] Support long pasted text in TUI goals (#27509)
## Stack

1. [1 of 3] Support long raw TUI goal objectives - #27508
2. **[2 of 3] Support long pasted text in TUI goals** - this PR
3. [3 of 3] Support images in TUI goals - #27510

## Why

Large text pasted into the TUI composer is represented as a paste
placeholder plus pending paste metadata. For `/goal`, preserving only
the visible placeholder is not enough: the agent would see a short
placeholder string instead of the actual pasted text, and the long-text
support from the first PR would never see the payload.

The TUI also needs to avoid writing stale sidecar files when a user
pastes a large block and then deletes its placeholder before submitting
the goal.

## What Changed

- Introduces a TUI `GoalDraft` for goal submissions so `/goal`, `/goal
edit`, and queued goal commands can carry objective text plus text
elements and pending paste payloads.
- Materializes active pasted-text placeholders to `pasted-text-N.txt`
files through the app-server filesystem path introduced in #27508.
- Rewrites active paste placeholders in the persisted objective to file
references, while leaving literal placeholder-looking text alone.
- Filters out deleted paste placeholders so otherwise-small goals do not
require `$CODEX_HOME` or remote filesystem writes.
- Preserves pending paste metadata when a `/goal` command is queued
before a thread exists.

## Verification

- Added goal materialization tests for active paste placeholders,
deleted paste placeholders, and whitespace-only paste payloads.
- Added/updated TUI slash-command tests for large pasted text, queued
`/goal` commands before thread start, and queued oversized goal
behavior.

## Manual Testing

- Used real terminal bracketed-paste sequences through a remote TUI
session. A 1,228-byte multiline paste became `pasted-text-1.txt`; its
first/last lines and byte count matched exactly, and the persisted
objective referenced the server-host path.
- Pasted a large block, deleted its placeholder, and submitted a small
replacement objective. No new directory or sidecar file was created.
- Added two same-length large pastes to one goal. The composer
disambiguated their visible placeholders, and materialization preserved
order and contents in `pasted-text-1.txt` and `pasted-text-2.txt`.
- Submitted a whitespace-only large paste and verified the goal was
rejected as empty without writing a file.
- Submitted a pasted-text replacement while another goal was active,
verified no file was written before confirmation, then canceled and
confirmed the original goal remained unchanged.
- Combined a large paste with enough raw text to exceed 4,000 characters
after placeholder rewriting. The paste sidecar and `goal-objective.md`
were created in the same remote attachment directory, and `/goal edit`
restored the rewritten objective with its sidecar reference.

Ahmed Ibrahim 8ac304c299 [codex] Support model-defined reasoning efforts (#26444)
## Summary
- accept non-empty model-defined reasoning effort values while
preserving built-in effort behavior
- propagate the non-Copy effort type through core, app-server, TUI,
telemetry, and persistence call sites
- preserve string wire encoding and expose an open-string schema for
clients
- update model selection and shortcut behavior for model-advertised
effort values

## Root cause
`ReasoningEffort` gained a string-backed custom variant, so it could no
longer implement `Copy` or rely on derived closed-enum serialization.
Existing consumers still moved effort values from shared references and
assumed a fixed built-in value set.

## Validation
- `just fmt`
- Local tests and compilation were not run per request; relying on CI.

Eric Traut edc48e4612 Sync TUI thread settings through app server (#23507)
Builds on #23502.

## Why

#23502 adds the app-server `thread/settings/update` API and matching
`thread/settings/updated` notification. The TUI already lets users
change thread-scoped settings such as model, reasoning effort, service
tier, approvals, permissions, personality, and collaboration mode, but
those updates need to flow through the app server so embedded and
connected clients observe the same thread state.

This is a rework (simplification) of PR
https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/22510. It has the same
functionality, but the underlying `thread/settings/update` api is now
simpler in that it no longer returns the effective settings as a
response. Now, clients receive the effective settings only through the
`thread/settings/updated` notification.

## What Changed

This updates the TUI to send `thread/settings/update` whenever those
thread-scoped settings change and to treat the RPC response as the
authoritative acknowledgement. It also routes `thread/settings/updated`
notifications back into cached session state and the visible chat widget
so active and inactive threads stay in sync after app-server-originated
changes.

The implementation is kept to the TUI layer: settings conversion and
merge logic live under `codex-rs/tui/src/app/thread_settings.rs`, with
dispatch/routing hooks in the existing app and chat widget paths.

## Verification

I manually tested using `codex app-server --listen unix://` and then
launching two copies of the TUI that use the same local app server. I
then resumed the same thread on both and verified that changes like plan
mode, fast mode, model, reasoning effort, etc. are reflected "live" in
the second client when modified in the first and vice versa.

Eric Traut c0f7e1b99f [2 of 2] Start fresh TUI thread in background (#23176)
## Why

After the terminal-probe work in #23175, fresh-session startup still
waits for `thread/start` before the chat input can become usable. The
chat widget already has the machinery to hold early submissions until a
session is configured, so fresh `thread/start` does not need to stay on
the input-ready hot path.

Refs #16335.

## What

This PR starts fresh app-server threads in a background task, reports
completion through a startup app event, and attaches the primary session
once `thread/start` returns. Resume and fork startup paths remain
synchronous.

## Benchmark

In the local pty startup benchmark, this PR's pre-optimization base
branch, #23175, measured about 152ms median from launch to accepted chat
input. The stacked result measured about 66ms median, for an approximate
additional savings of 85-95ms. For broader context, the original `main`
baseline before either startup optimization was about 250.5ms median. We
also measured Codex 0.117.0 on the same machine at about 64.6ms median,
so the stacked branch is back in the old-startup-time range.

Eric Traut 2630a6ca35 Refactor chatwidget input flow into modules (#22407)
## Why

`chatwidget.rs` is still carrying too many unrelated responsibilities in
one file. #22269 started a five-phase effort to move coherent behavior
domains into focused modules while keeping `chatwidget.rs` as the
composition layer.

This PR is phase 2 of that plan. It extracts the input and submission
flow as a mechanical move before the later protocol, popup/status, and
constructor/orchestration phases.

## What Changed

- Added `codex-rs/tui/src/chatwidget/input_flow.rs` for composer input
results, queued user-message draining, pending-input previews, and
mode-specific submission entry points.
- Added `codex-rs/tui/src/chatwidget/input_submission.rs` for
user-message construction/submission, shell prompt submission,
structured mention resolution, and blocked image draft restoration.
- Added `codex-rs/tui/src/chatwidget/input_restore.rs` for
initial-message submission, pending steer restoration after interrupts,
and thread input snapshot/restore behavior.
- Registered the new modules and removed the moved `ChatWidget` impl
methods from `codex-rs/tui/src/chatwidget.rs`.

## Follow-On Refactor Phases

The five-phase plan from #22269 is:

- Phase 1: mechanical helper and state moves. Completed in #22269.
- Phase 2: extract input and submission flow, including queued user
messages, shell prompt submission, pending steer restoration, and thread
input snapshot/restore behavior. This PR.
- Phase 3: extract protocol, replay, streaming, and tool lifecycle
handling, while preserving active-cell grouping, transcript
invalidation, interrupt deferral, and final-message separator behavior.
- Phase 4: extract settings, popups, and status surfaces, including
model/reasoning/collaboration/personality popups, permission prompts,
rate-limit UI, and connectors helpers.
- Phase 5: clean up the remaining constructor and orchestration code
once the larger behavior domains have moved out, leaving `chatwidget.rs`
as the composition layer.
