joeytrasatti-openai 85c6da1c79 Add persisted sections for organizing threads (#35722)
## What changed

- Replace the `isPinned` thread metadata and filters with an optional persisted
  `section` and `sectionId`.
- Add the paginated `threadSection/list` app-server method so clients can
discover sections even when they contain no threads.
- Seed a stable `Pinned` section, validate section assignments, and support
filtering for a specific section or for unsectioned threads.

## Testing

- Cover section protocol serialization, listing and pagination, metadata
updates, filtering, persistence, migration compatibility, and operation
  without SQLite state.

Celia Chen 265cd2e100 Initialize execution environments with the final HTTP policy (#34995)
## Why

The TUI must inspect the default execution environment before loading its final
configuration. Initializing the environment manager at that point can give
startup services the bootstrap HTTP policy instead of the effective policy after
managed requirements are applied.

## What changed

- Split environment discovery from manager construction so callers can inspect
the default environment without starting remote connections.
- Build the environment manager after final configuration loading and pass its
resolved `HttpClientFactory` through all construction paths.
- Add shared test support for managers that use the legacy default HTTP policy.

## Testing

- Cover connection-free environment discovery and explicit HTTP policy
  propagation.
- Verify TUI startup services use the final managed `respect_system_proxy` value.

Adam Perry @ OpenAI c769a05340 Honor the configured SQLite home across state consumers (#34994)
## Why

Codex and SQLite data can use separate home directories, but state consumers
could reconstruct database paths from the Codex home instead of consistently
using the resolved SQLite configuration.

## What changed

- Pass `SqliteConfig` through the core, rollout, state runtime, and thread store
instead of passing a directory and rebuilding the configuration downstream.
- Use that shared configuration for state, logs, memories, goals, and paginated
thread-history database access, including integrity checks and cleanup.
- Reject state database handles whose SQLite configuration does not match the
  requesting store.

## Testing

Add coverage with separate Codex and SQLite homes that verifies startup
backfill, thread listing, and paginated history all use the configured SQLite
directory.

joeytrasatti-openai 400ee190c3 Add persisted thread pinning to the app server (#34840)
## What changed

- Add `isPinned` to thread responses and allow `thread/metadata/update` to pin or unpin stored threads.
- Add an `isPinned` filter to `thread/list`, including cursor-based pagination and combinations with relationship filters.
- Persist pin state in SQLite without modifying rollout files, default existing threads to unpinned, and preserve pins through reconciliation and archive transitions.

## Testing

- Cover protocol serialization, database migration and indexing, pin updates, filtered pagination, rollout reconciliation, and archive/unarchive behavior.

Michael Bolin a26bc337cf Require auth managers to receive routing configuration (#34650)
## Why

Auth managers should use the application's resolved HTTP client factory instead
of silently falling back to the transport's default proxy behavior.

## What changed

- Make `AuthRouteConfig` required when constructing an `AuthManager` or
  `AuthConfig`.
- Pass each production caller's resolved routing configuration through without
wrapping it in an optional value.
- Add a test helper that explicitly selects the transport-default proxy policy
for callers that do not exercise custom routing.

Michael Bolin f899a79c03 Propagate resolved proxy policy through auth routing (#34649)
## Why

Auth routing represented the default proxy policy as an absent configuration,
leaving consumers to reconstruct the fallback HTTP client independently. Carry
the application's resolved policy explicitly so auth and related requests use
the same client configuration.

## What changed

- Build `AuthRouteConfig` from the resolved `HttpClientFactory` for both
  `ReqwestDefault` and `RespectSystemProxy` policies.
- Pass that route configuration through login, auth, cloud task, and cloud
configuration flows, and reuse its factory when loading cloud configuration.
- Log cloud-task configuration load failures before falling back to the
  transport-default proxy policy.

## Testing

Extended configuration tests to verify that effective and bootstrap auth routes
select the expected proxy policy when system-proxy support is enabled or
disabled by feature requirements.

Abhinav ee71c4a90f Enforce exact values from managed config requirements (#34597)
## What changed

- Apply managed values for `sqlite_home`, `log_dir`, `model_catalog_json`,
  `check_for_update_on_startup`, `allow_login_shell`, the report-submission
opt-in, and `windows.sandbox_private_desktop` to the runtime configuration,
with source-aware warnings when they override configured values.
- Expose these values through `configRequirements/read`, return them from
`config/read`, include them in session config locks, and show their sources in
  the TUI config debug view.
- Reject app-server writes that overlap an exact managed requirement with
`configRequirementReadonly` while leaving unrelated sibling keys writable.

## Testing

- Cover runtime overrides, requirement API mapping, config reads and writes,
session lock serialization, cross-platform path URIs, and debug output.

Anais Killian 2895d82b5e Let users remember the working directory for resumed sessions (#33950)
## What changed

- Add `tui.resume_cwd` with `current` and `session` modes for resume and fork flows.
- Let users persist either mode directly from the working-directory prompt, while preserving one-time choices when no preference is configured.
- Apply the preference consistently during startup and in-app resume, honor explicit `--cd` overrides, and reject unsupported or unavailable directory choices with a clear error.

## Testing

- Cover configuration parsing and persistence, prompt behavior, startup and in-app flows, session metadata fallback, and remote workspace constraints.

Felipe Coury f896ab9f25 Render inline visualization links in the TUI (#33925)
## Why

Assistant-authored inline visualizations need a terminal fallback that lets users open generated artifacts in a browser.

## What changed

- Recognize `::codex-inline-vis{file="..."}` directives in assistant Markdown and replace them with browser links during streaming, finalized history rendering, and local transcript previews.
- Materialize visualization fragments in sandboxed viewer documents with a content security policy, while restricting artifacts to HTML files within the thread's visualization directory and limiting their size.
- Show an explicit unavailable message for invalid or missing artifacts, hide incomplete streaming directives, and preserve directive text in code blocks and user Markdown.
- Add a trusted file-link path for generated viewers without enabling arbitrary `file:` links in Markdown.

## Testing

Add coverage for directive rewriting, streaming and replay, artifact validation, sandboxed viewer generation, trusted terminal hyperlinks, and literal preservation.

## What changed

- Detect and import supported Cursor settings, sandbox permissions, MCP servers,
project instructions, hooks, agents, commands, plugins, and recent chat
  sessions.
- Update the `/import` flow to check Claude Code and Cursor, prompting for a
source when both have importable data.
- Add `migrationSource` to the app-server detect and import requests so each
operation uses the selected adapter, while retaining `source` for import
  attribution and backwards compatibility.

## Testing

- Add coverage for Cursor config conversion, hooks, plugins, session discovery
and conversion, app-server imports, and TUI source selection.

Eric Traut 8f5bb6171e Remove TUI exec-policy core exports (#31179)
## Why

The TUI still reached through `codex_app_server_client::legacy_core` to
validate exec-policy rules during local startup. The app server already
owns this validation and reports parse failures through `configWarning`,
so the duplicate TUI preflight preserved an unnecessary core dependency
and could inspect the wrong machine when connected to a remote app
server.

## What changed

- Remove the TUI's direct exec-policy startup check.
- Remove the two exec-policy re-exports from `legacy_core`.
- Rely on the app server's existing config-warning flow for malformed
custom rules in both embedded and remote sessions.

hefuc-oai cf36c688b3 [codex] Use managed defaults for TUI threads (#30147)
## Why

#29683 exposes managed defaults for new-thread model settings through
`configRequirements/read` without applying them server-wide. The TUI is
an app-server client, so it should explicitly consume those defaults
when it creates a fresh thread.

This lets plain `codex` start on the managed model while preserving the
existing ability to change model settings within the thread.

## What changed

- Read `requirements.models.newThread` during TUI app-server bootstrap.
- Apply the managed model, reasoning effort, and service tier to the
initial fresh thread and subsequent `/new` or `/clear` threads.
- Keep explicit launch overrides above the managed defaults.
- Normalize the managed `fast` service tier to the `priority` request
value.
- Leave resumed and forked threads unchanged.

The application logic lives in a small TUI-only module; app-server
`thread/start` behavior remains unchanged for other clients.

## User experience

- Plain `codex` starts with the managed new-thread settings.
- A user can still change settings with `/model` or the existing
service-tier controls.
- Starting another fresh thread reapplies the managed defaults.
- Explicit launch choices such as `codex -m <model>` continue to win.

## Validation

- `just test -p codex-tui managed_new_thread_defaults`
- `just fix -p codex-tui`

Brent Traut 8057603d0c feat(app-server): list descendant threads by ancestor (#29591)
## Why

`thread/list` can filter direct children with `parentThreadId`, but
clients cannot request an entire spawned subtree. Discovering every
descendant requires repeated client-side requests and gives up the
database's existing filtering and pagination path.

## What changed

Experimental clients can use `ancestorThreadId` to return strict
descendants at any depth while `parentThreadId` retains its direct-child
meaning. The filters are mutually exclusive, the ancestor is excluded,
and every result preserves its immediate `parentThreadId` so callers can
reconstruct the tree.

## How it works

- **Explicit relationship:** Internal list parameters distinguish direct
children from transitive descendants without changing the meaning of
`parentThreadId`.
- **Existing graph:** Persisted parent-child spawn edges remain the
source of truth, so descendant lookup needs no schema migration or
ancestry cache.
- **Indexed traversal:** A recursive SQLite query starts from the
parent-edge index, walks each generation, and applies thread filters,
sorting, and cursor pagination in the same database request.
- **Reconstructable results:** The response stays flat and normally
ordered while carrying each descendant's immediate parent.

## Verification

Ran 550 tests across the protocol, state, rollout, and thread-store
crates, then reran the four focused state, store, and app-server
descendant-listing tests after the final diff reduction. Scoped Clippy
and formatting checks passed. Stable and experimental schema generation
was checked; the stable fixtures remain unchanged while the experimental
schema includes the new field.

Adam Perry @ OpenAI e639e8c4bd connectors: own app metadata types (#29723)
## Why

Connector metadata is consumed by connector discovery, ChatGPT
integration, core, and TUI code. Treating app-server's wire DTO as the
shared domain model reverses the intended dependency direction.

## What changed

- Added connector-owned app branding, review, screenshot, metadata, and
info types.
- Added explicit conversions in app-server and TUI while preserving
app-server's wire payloads.
- Removed production app-server-protocol dependencies from connectors

Adam Perry @ OpenAI 31372078d1 auth: move domain mode below app wire types (#29721)
## Why

Authentication mode is a domain concept used by login, model selection,
telemetry, and transports. Keeping the canonical type in app-server
protocol forces those lower-level crates to depend on an unrelated wire
API.

## What changed

- Added canonical `codex_protocol::auth::AuthMode` domain values.
- Kept the app-server wire DTO unchanged and added an explicit app-side
conversion.
- Removed production app-server-protocol dependencies from login,

canvrno-oai 1659c4a629 PAC 2 - Add shared auth system proxy contract (#26707)
## Summary

Stacked on #26706.

Adds the shared auth/system-proxy contract that later platform resolver
PRs plug into. This PR moves Codex-owned auth and startup HTTP clients
through a common route-aware boundary, but does not yet add Windows or
macOS system proxy resolution.

The default path remains unchanged when `respect_system_proxy` is absent
or disabled.

## Implementation

- Adds `codex-client/src/outbound_proxy.rs` with the shared
route-selection model:
  - `OutboundProxyConfig`;
  - `ClientRouteClass`;
  - `RouteFailureClass`;
  - `build_reqwest_client_for_route`.
- Preserves the existing reqwest/default-client behavior when no route
config is supplied.
- Uses the fixed MVP routing policy when route config is supplied:
platform system/PAC/WPAD discovery, then explicit env proxy variables,
then direct connection.
- Keeps platform-specific system discovery behind the shared client
boundary. This PR provides the contract and fallback behavior; later
resolver PRs plug in Windows and macOS discovery.
- Adds `login::AuthRouteConfig` so auth call sites depend on a small
policy type instead of platform resolver details.
- Maps the resolved `Config.respect_system_proxy` boolean into
`AuthRouteConfig` for auth-owned clients.
- Wires the route config through browser login, device-code login,
access-token login, login status, logout/revoke, token refresh, API-key
exchange, app-server account login, TUI/app startup, cloud-config
bootstrap, cloud tasks, plugin auth, and exec startup config loading.

## End-user behavior

- No behavior changes by default.
- When `respect_system_proxy = true`, auth-owned clients opt into the
shared route-aware client path.
- On platforms without a resolver implementation in this PR, system
discovery is unavailable and the route-aware path falls back to explicit
env proxy handling, then direct connection.
- Custom CA handling remains separate from proxy route selection and
still runs through the shared client builder.
- No proxy URLs, PAC contents, or resolved platform details are exposed
through the public config surface introduced here.

## Tests

Adds or updates coverage for:

- preserving default auth-client fallback behavior when no route config
is provided;
- injected environment-proxy fallback without mutating process
environment;
- existing login-server E2E flows using explicit `auth_route_config:
None` to guard unchanged default behavior;
- updated auth manager, login, logout, cloud-config, startup, and
plugin-auth call sites passing route config explicitly.

jif e98d43ac37 Filter noisy targets from persistent logs (#29457)
## Why

The local SQLite log sink currently enables TRACE for every target. This
persists high-volume dependency logs bridged through `target=log` and
duplicates OpenTelemetry mirror events in `codex_otel.log_only` and
`codex_otel.trace_safe`.

These records rapidly consume the per-partition log budget and cause
unnecessary SQLite insert-and-prune churn.

## What changed

- Keep TRACE persistence for other targets.
- Exclude bridged `target=log` events from the SQLite sink.
- Exclude the two `codex_otel` mirror targets from the SQLite sink.
- Share the same filter between app-server and TUI.

Remote OpenTelemetry export and metrics are unchanged.

jif 6d15bb3d17 Persist session IDs across thread resume (#29327)
## Summary

A cold-resumed subagent kept its durable thread ID but could receive a
new session ID, splitting one agent tree across multiple sessions after
a restart.

Persist the root session ID in every rollout `SessionMeta`, carry it
through thread creation, and restore it before initializing the resumed
`Session` and `AgentControl`.

## Behavior

For a nested agent tree:

```text
root session R
  parent thread P
    child thread C
```

The child rollout stores:

```text
session_id:       R
parent_thread_id: P
id:               C
```

After a cold resume, the child still belongs to root session `R` while
its immediate parent remains `P`. The integration coverage uses distinct
values for all three IDs so it catches restoring the session from
`parent_thread_id`.

## Legacy rollouts

Previous rollouts have `id` but no `session_id`. `SessionMetaLine`
deserialization treats a missing `session_id` as `id`, keeping those
files readable, listable, and resumable. When a legacy subagent is
resumed through its root, that synthesized child ID no longer overrides
the inherited root-scoped `AgentControl`. New rollouts always persist
the explicit root session ID.

Adrian ec848dde0e feat: opt ChatGPT auth into agent identity (#19049)
## Stack

This is PR 2 of the simplified HAI single-run-task stack:

- [#19047](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/19047) Agent Identity
assertion and task-registration primitives, including the shared
run-task helper used by existing Agent Identity JWT auth.
- [#19049](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/19049)
Disabled-by-default ChatGPT auth opt-in that provisions/reuses persisted
Agent Identity runtime auth and its single run task.
- [#19051](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/19051) Run-scoped
provider auth that uses one backend-owned task id for first-party
inference and compaction requests.

[#19054](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/19054) collapsed out of
the active stack because the simplified design no longer needs a
separate background/control-plane task helper.

## Summary

This PR adds the disabled-by-default path for normal ChatGPT-login Codex
sessions to obtain Agent Identity runtime auth through the Codex
backend. Existing Agent Identity JWT startup mode remains a separate
path and does not require the feature flag.

What changed:

- adds the experimental `use_agent_identity` feature flag and config
schema entry
- adds an explicit `AgentIdentityAuthPolicy` so call sites choose
`JwtOnly` or `ChatGptAuth` instead of passing a bare boolean
- stores standalone Agent Identity JWT credentials separately from
backend-registered Agent Identity records
- persists the registered Agent Identity record, private key, and single
run task id in `auth.json` so process restarts reuse the same identity
- derives the agent/task registration base URL from ChatGPT/Codex auth
config while keeping JWT JWKS lookup separate
- provisions and caches ChatGPT-derived Agent Identity runtime auth when
`use_agent_identity` is enabled
- reuses the shared run-task registration helper from PR1 rather than
adding a second task-registration path

This PR intentionally does not switch model inference over to
`AgentAssertion` auth. The provider-auth integration lands in the next
PR.

Adrian d9e0551564 feat: add run task identity primitives (#19047)
## Stack

This is PR 1 of the simplified HAI single-run-task stack:

- [#19047](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/19047) Agent Identity
assertion and task-registration primitives, including the shared
run-task helper used by existing Agent Identity JWT auth.
- [#19049](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/19049)
Disabled-by-default ChatGPT auth opt-in that provisions/reuses persisted

- [#19051](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/19051) Run-scoped
provider auth that uses one backend-owned task id for first-party
inference and compaction requests.

[#19054](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/19054) collapsed out of
the active stack because the simplified design no longer needs a
separate background/control-plane task helper.

## Summary

The simplified POC shape is one backend-owned task per Agent Identity
run. This PR makes the first layer match that final shape directly
instead of introducing task targets, caller-owned external task refs, or
intermediate wrappers that later PRs would need to undo.

What changed:

- keeps the `AgentAssertion` wire payload as `agent_runtime_id`,
`task_id`, `timestamp`, and `signature`
- exposes `register_agent_task` as the single task-registration helper
for both existing Agent Identity JWT auth and the ChatGPT-registration
path added later in the stack
- makes task registration send only the signed registration timestamp;
the backend owns the returned opaque task id
- removes the unused target/task-kind/external-task-ref surfaces from
`codex-agent-identity`
- keeps Agent Identity JWT JWKS lookup separate from agent/task
registration URL derivation
- updates Agent Identity JWT auth to register one run task during auth
construction and share that task across cloned auth handles

This PR intentionally does not enable ChatGPT-derived Agent Identity.
That opt-in and config gate are added in the next PR.

Celia Chen 12aaeb7bf8 [codex] expose Bedrock credential source in account/read (#27751)
## Why

`account/read` currently reports only `type: "amazonBedrock"`, so
clients cannot distinguish a Codex-managed Bedrock API key from
credentials supplied by AWS. The app UI needs that distinction to render
the appropriate account state without duplicating provider-auth logic.

Credential-source selection belongs to the Bedrock model provider
because it already owns the precedence between managed Bedrock auth and
the external AWS credential path. This builds on #27443 and #27689.

## What changed

- Added `AmazonBedrockCredentialSource` with `codexManaged` and
`awsManaged` values.
- Included the selected credential source in
`ProviderAccount::AmazonBedrock` and the app-server `Account` response.
- Made `AmazonBedrockModelProvider::account_state()` classify the source
from its managed-auth state.
- Regenerated the app-server JSON and TypeScript schemas.
- Updated app-server account documentation and downstream TUI matches.

`codexManaged` means the provider found a managed Bedrock API key.
`awsManaged` identifies the provider's external AWS credential path; it
does not assert that the AWS credential chain has been validated.

## Testing

- Added model-provider coverage for Codex-managed precedence and
AWS-managed fallback.
- Added app-server protocol serialization coverage for both wire values.
- Added app-server integration coverage for both `account/read`
responses.
- `just test -p codex-protocol -p codex-model-provider -p
codex-app-server-protocol` (497 tests passed).

After rebasing onto #27711, the `codex-app-server` test target compiled
past the image-generation `PathUri` migration. Local linking was then
interrupted by disk exhaustion (`No space left on device`).

Brent Traut dfd03ea01b feat(app-server): filter threads by parent (#26662)
## Why

Clients that display or coordinate spawned subagents need an
authoritative snapshot of a thread's immediate spawned children when
they connect to app-server or recover after missing live events.
`thread/list` cannot query by parent, so clients must otherwise scan
unrelated threads or reconstruct relationships from rollout history and
transient events.

The direct spawn relationship already exists in persisted
`thread_spawn_edges` state. Review and Guardian threads do not
participate in that lifecycle and are intentionally outside this
filter's scope.

## What changed

This adds an experimental `parentThreadId` filter to `thread/list`.
Parent-filtered requests return direct spawned children from persisted
state while preserving the existing response shape, explicit filters,
sorting, and timestamp-only cursor behavior. The lookup does not read
rollout transcripts or recursively return descendants.

Supersedes #25112 with the narrower `thread/list` filter approach.

## How it works

1. An experimental client passes a valid thread ID as `parentThreadId`.
2. App-server routes the list through the existing thread-store and
state-database boundaries.
3. SQLite selects threads whose IDs have a direct persisted spawn edge
from that parent.
4. Omitted provider and source filters include all values; explicit
filters keep ordinary `thread/list` semantics.
5. Grandchildren, Review threads, and Guardian threads are excluded.

## Verification

State (144 tests), rollout (69 tests), and focused app-server
thread-list (31 tests) suites passed. Scoped Clippy checks and
repository formatting also passed. Coverage includes direct spawned
children, omitted grandchildren, pagination, malformed IDs, mixed source
kinds, explicit filters, and operation without rollout files.

Celia Chen 56c97e3b5c feat: use encrypted local secrets for CLI auth (#27539)
## Why

Windows Credential Manager limits generic credential blobs to 2,560
bytes. Large serialized ChatGPT auth payloads can exceed that limit, so
keyring-mode CLI auth needs a backend that keeps only the encryption key
in the OS keyring and stores the payload in Codex's encrypted
local-secrets file.

This is the third PR in the encrypted-auth stack:

1. #27504 — feature and config selection
2. #27535 — auth-specific local-secrets namespaces
3. This PR — CLI auth implementation and activation
4. MCP OAuth implementation and activation

## What Changed

- Added encrypted CLI-auth storage using the `CliAuth` secrets
namespace.
- Preserved direct keyring storage for platforms/configurations where it
remains selected.
- Selected the backend consistently for login, logout, refresh,
device-code login, auth loading, and login restrictions.
- Threaded resolved bootstrap/full config through CLI, exec, TUI,
app-server account handling, cloud config, and cloud tasks.
- Removed stale `auth.json` fallback data after successful encrypted
saves and removed encrypted, direct-keyring, and fallback data during
logout.
- Added storage and integration coverage for both direct and encrypted
keyring modes.

MCP OAuth persistence is intentionally left to the next PR.

Eric Traut 576f603440 Remove TUI realtime voice support (#27801)
## Why

Removes the realtime audio support from TUI.

## What Changed

- Removed the TUI `/realtime` and realtime `/settings` command paths.
- Deleted TUI voice capture/playback, WebRTC session handling,
audio-device selection UI, and recording-meter code.
- Removed TUI realtime tests and snapshots that covered the deleted
surfaces.
- Dropped the TUI-only `cpal` and `codex-realtime-webrtc` dependencies
and refreshed the Rust/Bazel locks.

Eric Traut 096e5e76a2 Persist update dismissal without cache (#27783)
## Summary

Choosing “Don’t remind me” can silently fail when `version.json`
disappears before dismissal because `dismiss_version` returns success
without writing anything. The same update can then reappear on the next
launch.

Initialize a minimal `VersionInfo` from the selected version when the
cache cannot be read, then persist the dismissal through the existing
write path.

Eric Traut 78bab04116 [1 of 3] Support long raw TUI goal objectives (#27508)
## Stack

1. **[1 of 3] Support long raw TUI goal objectives** - this PR
2. [2 of 3] Support long pasted text in TUI goals - #27509
3. [3 of 3] Support images in TUI goals - #27510

## Why

`thread/goal/set` limits persisted objective text to 4000 characters.
The TUI used to reject raw `/goal` objectives above that limit, even
though the client can make them usable by writing the long text to a
file and storing a short objective that points at that file.

This also needs to work for remote app-server sessions: filesystem API
calls must create files on the app-server host, and the stored path must
be meaningful to the agent on that host.

## What Changed

- Adds an app-server-host path helper so TUI code can build paths that
are resolved on the app-server host rather than the TUI host.
- Adds TUI app-server session helpers for `fs/createDirectory`,
`fs/writeFile`, `fs/readFile`, and `fs/remove` that work for embedded
and remote app-server sessions without changing the app-server protocol.
- Materializes oversized raw `/goal` objectives into
`$CODEX_HOME/attachments/<uuid>/goal-objective.md` through the
app-server filesystem APIs, then stores a short, readable objective that
directs the agent to that file.
- Reads managed objective files back for `/goal edit`. Other goal UI
renders the readable stored objective normally, without
managed-file-specific presentation logic.
- Recognizes managed references only when they name the expected
generated file under the app server's reported `$CODEX_HOME`, and cleans
up newly materialized files when goal replacement or setting does not
complete.

## Verification

- Added/updated TUI tests for raw oversized `/goal` submission, large
inline-paste expansion, queued oversized goals, app-facing
materialization before `thread/goal/set`, managed-path validation,
editing, and cleanup.
- Added/updated app-server-client remote coverage for initialized remote
Codex home handling.

## Manual Testing

- Ran the real TUI against a Unix-socket app server with different local
and server `$CODEX_HOME` directories. Oversized goals wrote only under
the server home, and persisted references used the server-canonical path
rather than the TUI path.
- Exercised 3,999-, 4,000-, and 4,001-character raw objectives. The
first two stayed inline without new files; the 4,001-character objective
became a managed objective file.
- Submitted a larger 8,275-character objective, verified its full
contents on the app-server host, and observed the goal continuation open
the referenced server-side file.
- Opened `/goal edit` for a managed objective and verified the full text
was restored through remote `fs/readFile`.
- Submitted an oversized replacement while a goal was active, verified
no file was written before confirmation, then canceled and confirmed
that the existing goal and attachment count were unchanged.

Eric Traut 9d88e299a7 Print TUI session info on fatal exits (#27417)
## Summary

TUI exits printed the resume/session summary only after checking the
exit reason. On fatal exits, both CLI wrappers wrote the error and
called `process::exit(1)` immediately, so an active session that ended
on a fatal error could skip the session information entirely.

This change prints the normal exit summary before returning the fatal
nonzero exit code. If a fatal exit has a known thread id but no
resumable rollout hint, it prints `Session ID: <id>` instead of staying
silent. It also flushes stdout before `process::exit(1)` so the summary
line is not lost during process teardown.

## Implementation

- Apply the fatal-exit ordering fix in both `codex` and standalone
`codex-tui`.
- Keep normal user-requested exit behavior unchanged.
- Preserve the existing resume hint when a rollout is resumable, and use
the raw thread id only as a fatal-exit fallback.

Eric Traut 1e5b87b4d7 Remove TUI legacy Windows sandbox dependency (#27490)
## Why

This is part of an ongoing attempt to eliminate the TUI's direct
dependency on core features. When we moved the TUI to the app server, we
left a `legacy_core` shim that re-exported some remaining core symbols
for the TUI. The intent was to eventually remove all of these.

In this PR, we remove the symbols related to the Windows sandbox.

The change should be behavior-neutral and low risk because it's just
refactoring and removal of code that is now effectively dead.

When working on this PR, I noticed a big existing problem that affects
mixed-platform remoting. For example, if you run the TUI on a Linux box
and remote into a Windows box, the TUI logic doesn't properly handle
Windows sandbox setup properly. Fixing this is beyond the scope of this
PR, but I've left a TODO comment in place so we don't forget.

## What changed

- Move the remaining TUI-specific sandbox level, setup, telemetry, and
read-root helpers into `codex-tui`, calling `codex-windows-sandbox`
directly.
- Remove the Windows sandbox namespace and read-root grant re-exports
from the client-side `legacy_core` facade.
- Remove the dormant pre-elevation prompt fallback guarded by the
permanently enabled `ELEVATED_SANDBOX_NUX_ENABLED` switch. The reachable
elevated and non-elevated setup flows remain unchanged.

Eric Traut ab4ce40042 Trim TUI legacy telemetry and migration dependencies (#27487)
## Why

The TUI still reached through `codex-app-server-client::legacy_core` for
process telemetry setup and personality migration, exposing core-only
details after the TUI moved onto the app-server layer.

This is part of our ongoing efforts to whittle away at the legacy_core
shim that was left over after migrating the TUI to the app server.

This change is just a refactor/rename and should be behavior-neutral and
low risk.

## What changed

- expose OTEL provider construction through the app-server client and
keep the small process/SQLite telemetry adapters local to the TUI
- collapse personality migration results to the config-reload decision
the TUI needs
- remove the `legacy_core::otel_init` and
`legacy_core::personality_migration` subnamespaces

Eric Traut 9d87b771ce Add session delete commands in CLI and TUI (#27476)
## Summary

The app server exposes `thread/delete`, but users cannot invoke it from
the CLI or TUI. Because deletion is irreversible, the user-facing
commands need deliberate confirmation and safer handling of name-based
targets.

- Add `codex delete <SESSION>` with interactive confirmation,
restricting `--force` to UUID targets.
- Resolve exact names across active and archived sessions, including
renamed sessions, and validate prompted UUID targets before
confirmation.
- Add a `/delete` command with a confirmation popup that warns the
current session and its subagent threads will be permanently deleted.

## Manual testing

- Deleted by UUID with `--force` and verified the rollout, session-index
entry, and database row were removed.
- Exercised name-based confirmation for both cancellation and
affirmative deletion; cancellation preserved the session and
confirmation removed it.
- Verified deletion refuses to proceed without `--force`, while
`--force` rejects names, including duplicate names.
- Verified duplicate-name confirmation displays the concrete UUID
selected.
- Deleted an archived session by name.
- Verified an already-missing UUID fails before displaying a
confirmation prompt.
- Exercised `/delete` in the TUI: the popup defaults to No, cancellation
preserves the session, and confirmation deletes the session and exits.
- Verified that `codex delete` works for both archived and non-archived
sessions.

stefanstokic-oai b4445f2758 [codex] add /import for external agents (#27071)
## Why

External-agent import should be discoverable and deliberate without
blocking startup or claiming the public `codex [PROMPT]` CLI namespace.
The slash command keeps the flow local to the interactive TUI and reuses
the existing app-server import API.

## What changed

- add the user-facing `/import` slash command
- detect external-agent importable items only when the command is
invoked
- run imports through the embedded local app-server
- show start and completion messages, refresh configuration, and block
duplicate imports while one is pending
- reject the flow for unsupported remote and local-daemon sessions

## Validation

- `just test -p codex-tui external_agent_config_migration` (10 passed)
- manually exercised an isolated TUI fixture with existing
external-agent setup and session data using a fresh `CODEX_HOME`
- verified picker customization, plugin and session detection, import
completion, repeated invocation, and imported-session resume context
- the broader `just test -p codex-tui` run passed 2,805 tests, with 2
unrelated guardian feature-flag failures and 4 skipped tests

## Draft follow-ups

- review whether completion messaging should remain attached to the
initiating chat if the user switches chats during an import
- review shutdown semantics for an in-progress background import

stefanstokic-oai e3528434cd [codex] add external agent import picker UX (#27070)
## Why

Users need to understand what external-agent data Codex detected, what
is selected, and how to proceed before an import begins. The updated
picker makes focus, selection state, and the submission path explicit
while preserving the existing import backend.

## What changed

- replace the old migration prompt with a two-step external-agent import
picker
- add a customize view with explicit item focus, selection state,
counts, and a review action
- separate detected import data into a view model
- add Unix and Windows snapshots for prompt, item-focus, and
action-focus states

## Validation

David de Regt 3691fe5b76 fix: Auto-recover from corrupted sqlite databases (#26859)
Further investigation of the sqlite incidents showed that the problems
are due to corruption from the older version of SQLite that we recently
upgraded, and that the data is truly corrupted in the root database --
recovery of all data is not possible. Given that the data is
reconstructable from the rollouts on disk, we should just auto-backup
the database and let codex rebuild the rollout info from the disk
rollouts.

The new behavior is that appserver auto-backs-up and rebuilds (with logs
reflecting that behavior). The CLI now pops a message letting you know
this happened and the paths of the backed-up corrupt db and the new
database. There is also context added so that the desktop app can read
the rebuild info from it and inform the user with it.

jif fae2709320 multi-agent: add path-based v2 activity tracking (#27007)
## Why

Multi-agent v2 identifies agents by canonical paths, but its tool
handlers still emitted the larger legacy collaboration begin/end events
built around nickname and role metadata. App-server, rollout-trace,
analytics, and TUI consumers therefore lacked one compact path-based
completion signal that behaved consistently across live events and
replay.

The TUI also needs a bounded `/agent` status surface for v2 agents. It
should use recent local activity for previews, refresh liveness without
loading full histories, and keep the legacy picker available when no
path-backed v2 agent is known.

## What changed

- Replace the v2 `spawn_agent`, `send_message`, `followup_task`, and
`interrupt_agent` legacy lifecycle emissions with a success-only
`SubAgentActivity` event. The event records the tool call ID, occurrence
time, affected thread, canonical agent path, and `started`,
`interacted`, or `interrupted` kind.
- Expose the activity as a completion-only app-server v2
`subAgentActivity` thread item in live notifications and reconstructed
history, regenerate the protocol schemas, and count it in sub-agent tool
analytics.
- Track canonical paths from live activity and loaded-thread metadata in
the TUI, and render the activity in live and replayed transcripts.
- Make `/agent` list running path-backed agents with summaries from
bounded local event buffers. Each summary is capped at 240 graphemes,
the scan is capped at six recent items, only the last three wrapped
lines are shown, and command output is omitted. Liveness falls back to
metadata-only `thread/read` when local turn state is unavailable.
- Persist the activity as a terminal rollout-trace runtime payload and
reduce it to the corresponding spawn, send, follow-up, or close
interaction edge. `interrupt_agent` is classified as a close-edge
operation.
- Preserve the legacy picker when no path-backed v2 agent is known.

## Compatibility

App-server v2 clients that consumed `collabAgentToolCall` begin/end
pairs for these tools must handle the new completion-only
`subAgentActivity` item. Legacy v1 collaboration behavior is unchanged.

- `just test -p codex-rollout-trace`

serialization, spawn-edge reduction, `interrupt_agent` classification,
TUI status rendering without aggregated command output, and clearing
stale running state after a completed turn.

canvrno-oai 0beb5c7f32 Preserve cloud requirements across TUI thread resets (#25177)
Fixes a TUI regression where thread transitions such as `/new` and
`/clear` could rebuild config without the cloud requirements loader,
allowing users to fall back to non-cloud-managed settings. The config
refresh path now preserves cloud requirements during thread
reinitialization, and config loading is moved off the deep TUI event
stack to avoid stack-overflow crashes during those reloads.

- Passes the cloud requirements loader through TUI config rebuild paths.
- Keeps cloud requirements applied for `/new`, `/clear`, `/fork`, side
conversations, and session picker transitions.
- Runs config building on a Tokio task so reloads do not occur on the
deep TUI caller stack.
- Adds regression coverage that cloud requirements survive
thread-transition config refreshes.

## Test/Repro:
  - Start Codex with a cloud requirement applied.
  - Use `/new` or `/clear`.
- The refreshed/fresh-session config should still include the cloud
requirements

This can be tested with any config item, at this moment for oai staff
the easiest item to test is the `mentions_v2` feature. This is currently
enabled in cloud requirements, but is not enabled by default. As a
result, prior to these changes that feature is disabled after `/new` or
`/clear`. Testing the same steps with a binary from this branch should
not drop the feature enablement.

Felipe Coury 4ca2e436e5 fix(tui): linkify complete bare URLs with tildes (#27088)
## Background

Bare URLs containing `~` in their path are currently only clickable up
to the tilde in the interactive TUI. For example, Codex renders the
visible text for:

but the OSC 8 destination stops at `https://www.cs.tufts.edu/`. This
makes Cmd-click open the wrong location even though the terminal
recognizes the complete URL outside Codex.

Fixes #26774.

## Root Cause

The URL scanner already accepts `~`. The truncation happens earlier:
with strikethrough parsing enabled, `pulldown-cmark` splits this URL
into adjacent decoded `Event::Text` values around the tilde. The
Markdown renderer annotated each text event independently, so only the
first event still looked like a complete URL with a supported scheme.

The renderer now merges adjacent decoded text events before URL
annotation. It preserves the combined source range while retaining
parser-decoded contents, which avoids regressing entities such as
`&amp;`.

## Changes

- Add a small iterator that merges adjacent decoded Markdown text events
and their source ranges.
- Apply it at the Markdown renderer boundary before hyperlink detection.
- Add regression coverage for the reported URL in prose, wrapped table
output, and entity-decoded URLs.

## How to Test

1. Run Codex with `just c`.
2. Ask the assistant to output this exact bare URL with no Markdown link
syntax:

3. Hold Cmd and hover or click the URL.
4. Confirm the complete URL, including the suffix after `~`, is one
destination.
5. Repeat with the URL inside a Markdown table and confirm wrapped
portions retain the same complete destination.

Targeted tests:

- `just test -p codex-tui url_with_tilde`
- `just test -p codex-tui merged_text_events_preserve_entity_decoding`

The full `codex-tui` test run was also executed. Its only failures were
the two existing Guardian feature-flag tests:

-
`app::tests::update_feature_flags_disabling_guardian_clears_review_policy_and_restores_default`
-

vie-oai 61a913d9c8 [codex] Gate terminal visualization instructions in TUI (#26013)
## Summary
- add `Feature::TerminalVisualizationInstructions` as
`UnderDevelopment`, disabled by default
- keep terminal visualization instructions inside the TUI package
- append them to existing developer instructions for TUI start, resume,
and fork flows only when enabled
- intentionally do not apply them to `codex exec`

## Rollout
Control behavior is unchanged. TUI dogfooders can enable
`terminal_visualization_instructions`; no default user receives the new
terminal-specific instructions.

The shared visualization-selection rule is supplied separately through
the `codex_proxy_model_3` Statsig layer for every target Codex model
slug in the gated cohort. This TUI feature determines how to render an
appropriate visualization on the terminal surface; the model-layer
treatment determines when to use one.

## Validation
- `cargo test -p codex-tui
terminal_visualization_instructions_are_gated_for_all_tui_thread_flows
--lib`
- `cargo test -p codex-features --lib`
- `cargo fmt --all -- --check`
- `git diff --check`
- GPT-5.4 and GPT-5.5 real prompt-pipeline smoke tests: both visualized
the positive mapping case, abstained on the negative route case, and
passed exact prompt-stack verification on CLI and App
- refreshed onto current `main` with a clean merge and reran the focused
validation

The full 53-probe all-model treatment comparison and requested
production coding evals remain rollout gates before broadening beyond
the initial employee cohort.

This PR remains open for normal human review.

Charlie Marsh 055c7a7c53 Speed up TUI startup by reusing plugin discovery (#26469)
## Summary

TUI startup loads related plugin data from `hooks/list`, session MCP
initialization, and plugin skill warmup. These paths repeated filesystem
discovery and emitted the same plugin warnings, while `hooks/list` and
account/model bootstrap ran serially.

This change:

- Reuses one immutable plugin load outcome across startup consumers.
- Keys the cache only on plugin-relevant configuration.
- Single-flights concurrent plugin loads and prevents invalidated loads
from repopulating the cache.
- Runs hook discovery and account/model bootstrap concurrently.
- Preserves configuration-migration ordering, hook review behavior, and
accurate startup telemetry.

In 10 alternating release-build launches in the Ruff repository with the
existing `~/.codex` configuration, median time to the first editable
composer decreased from 833ms to 504ms. The branch was faster in 9 of 10
pairs, with a paired median improvement of 312ms.

Charlie Marsh 345cf6e8d0 Use state DB first for resume --last (#26462)
## Summary

`codex resume --last` currently lists sessions by updated time using
scan-and-repair. Updated-time filesystem listing must stat every rollout
before applying the cwd, provider, and source filters, so startup scales
with the entire local session history...

This change queries the state DB first for the latest matching session.
For local workspaces, we only accept the indexed result when its rollout
path still exists; otherwise we retry with scan-and-repair. The same
lookup path is shared by `fork --last`.

I benchmarked the same `thread/list` request used by `resume --last` in
my local `ruff` checkout against a Codex home with 2,599 active rollouts
totaling 3.7 GiB, including 90 Ruff threads.

Across five fresh release app-server processes with warm filesystem
caches, the state-DB-only lookup had median latency of 0.37-0.44 ms,
while scan-and-repair had median latency of 139-162 ms. First-request
latency was 0.7-1.7 ms versus 142-185 ms.

So this **removes roughly 140-160 ms from the `resume --last` lookup**
on this machine, and makes that lookup over 300x faster.

The tradeoff is that this does leave two correctness gaps:

- If a newer matching rollout is missing from SQLite but an older
matching row exists, the fast path resumes the older thread and never
falls back to the filesystem scan.
- If an existing row has stale filter or ordering metadata, the fast
path can select a different thread from scan-and-repair. The rollout
tests already demonstrate this for stale cwd metadata: state-DB-only
returns the stale match, while scan-and-repair removes and repairs it.

So you could end up seeing the "wrong" result in cases like...

1. A crash or SQLite error occurs between Codex writing the conversation
file and updating SQLite, leaving the newer file unindexed.

2. An older Codex version, restore, or manual copy adds a conversation
file after SQLite’s one-time backfill completed.

These seem pretty rare though (and sessions can always be recovered via

joeflorencio-openai d45cd26248 Switch runtime to cloud config bundle (#24622)
## Summary

- Adapts the moved `codex-cloud-config` crate from the legacy cloud
requirements endpoint to the new config bundle endpoint.
- Switches runtime consumers from `CloudRequirementsLoader` to
`CloudConfigBundleLoader` so one shared bundle supplies cloud-delivered
config and requirements.
- Removes the legacy cloud requirements domain loader path.

## Details

This intentionally keeps `codex-cloud-config` monolithic for review
lineage: the previous PR establishes the crate move, and this PR shows
the behavior change against that moved implementation. A follow-up PR
splits the module back into focused files.

The new bundle path preserves the important cloud requirements loader
semantics where intended: account-scoped signed cache, 30 minute TTL, 5
minute refresh cadence, retry/backoff, auth recovery, and fail-closed
startup loading. The cached payload changes from a single requirements
TOML string to the backend-delivered bundle, and validation rejects
malformed config or requirements fragments before cache write/use.

joeflorencio-openai 0b3a6f7185 Move cloud requirements crate to cloud config (#24621)
## Summary

- Moves the existing `codex-cloud-requirements` crate to
`codex-cloud-config`.
- Updates workspace dependencies and imports to the new crate name.
- Intentionally keeps runtime behavior unchanged: this still fetches the
legacy cloud requirements endpoint.

## Details

This PR exists to make the lineage obvious before the bundle migration.
GitHub should show the old `codex-rs/cloud-requirements/src/lib.rs`
implementation as moved to `codex-rs/cloud-config/src/lib.rs`, rather
than as unrelated new code.

The follow-up PR adapts this moved crate to the new config bundle API
and switches runtime consumers over.

Eric Traut 3e7baa00e4 Add thread archive CLI commands (#25021)
## Problem

Saved threads can already be archived through app-server RPCs, but the
command line did not expose direct archive or unarchive commands.

## Solution

Add `codex archive <thread>` and `codex unarchive <thread>`, resolving
UUIDs or exact thread names before calling the existing `thread/archive`
and `thread/unarchive` RPCs. The commands support scoped remote flags so
callers can target remote app-server endpoints when archiving or
unarchiving threads.

This also fixes a long-standing bug in `codex resume <thread id>` and
`codex fork <thread id>` that I found when testing the new commands.
These operations shouldn't be allowed on archived sessions. They now
fail with an error that tells the user to run `codex unarchive <thread
id>` first.

## Verification

Added app-server coverage for rejecting archived thread resume by id and
checking that the error includes the matching `codex unarchive <thread
id>` command.

Abhinav a5a94ee5a7 Constrain Windows sandbox requirements (#23766)
# Why

Managed requirements can already constrain sandbox policy choices, but
Windows sandbox implementation selection was still resolved
independently from those requirements. That left the TUI able to
continue through the unelevated fallback even when an organization wants
to require the elevated Windows sandbox implementation.

# What

- Add `[windows].allowed_sandbox_implementations` requirements support
for the Windows `elevated` and `unelevated` implementations.
- Apply that allowlist during core config resolution so disallowed
configured or feature-selected Windows sandbox implementations fall back
to an allowed implementation with the existing requirements warning
path.
- Reuse the existing TUI Windows setup prompts to block disallowed
unelevated continuation, keep required elevated setup in front of the
user, and refuse to persist a TUI-selected Windows sandbox mode that
requirements disallow.

# Semantics

| Allowed | Selected | Effective |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `["elevated"]` | `unelevated` / unset | `elevated` |
| `["unelevated"]` | `elevated` / unset | `unelevated` |
| `["elevated", "unelevated"]` | `elevated` | `elevated` |
| `["elevated", "unelevated"]` | `unelevated` | `unelevated` |
| `["elevated", "unelevated"]` | unset | `elevated` |

Availability is handled by interactive setup surfaces after allowlist
resolution. If the effective elevated implementation is not ready,
elevated-only requirements block on setup. When unelevated is also
allowed, the UI may offer the existing unelevated fallback.

## TUI Screens

If elevated setup is not already complete:
```
  Your organization requires the default Codex agent sandbox to continue. Set it up to protect your files and control
  network access.
  Learn more <https://developers.openai.com/codex/windows>
› 1. Set up default sandbox (requires Administrator permissions)
  2. Quit
```

If admin setup fails under `["elevated"]`:
```
  Couldn't set up your sandbox with Administrator permissions
  Your organization requires the default sandbox before Codex can continue.
  Learn more <https://developers.openai.com/codex/windows>
› 1. Try setting up admin sandbox again
  2. Quit
```

# Next Steps

- extend the requirements/readout surface, such as
`configRequirements/read`, so clients can inspect the loaded
`[windows].allowed_sandbox_implementations` requirement instead of
inferring it from Windows setup state
- consider extending `windowsSandbox/readiness` as well
- update the App startup guide, setup flow, and banner surfaces so an
elevated-only requirement omits any continue-unelevated escape hatch and
blocks startup until a permitted implementation is ready;
- preserve the existing unelevated fallback path when requirements allow
it, including the `["unelevated"]` case where elevated is disallowed

Felipe Coury 7a26497836 feat(tui): add OSC 8 web links to rich content (#24472)
## Why

Wrapped URLs in rich TUI output, especially URLs rendered inside
Markdown tables, are split across terminal rows. In terminals that
support OSC 8 hyperlinks, treating each visible fragment as part of the
complete destination enables reliable open-link and copy-link actions
even after table layout wraps the URL.

This addresses the semantic-link portion of #12200 and the behavior
described in
https://github.com/openai/codex/issues/12200#issuecomment-4535452980. It
does not change ordinary drag-selection across bordered table rows.

## What Changed

- Added shared TUI OSC 8 support that validates `http://` and `https://`
destinations, sanitizes terminal payloads, and applies metadata
separately from visible line width/layout.
- Added semantic web-link annotations to assistant and proposed-plan
Markdown, including explicit web links and bare web URLs in prose and
table cells while excluding code and non-web Markdown destinations.
- Preserved complete URL targets through table wrapping, narrow pipe
fallback, streaming, transcript overlay rendering, history insertion,
and resize replay.
- Routed intentional Codex-owned links in notices,
status/setup/app-link, feedback, onboarding, MCP/plugin help, memories,
and update surfaces through the shared hyperlink handling.

## How to Test

1. Run Codex in a terminal with OSC 8 link support, such as Ghostty, and
request an assistant response containing a Markdown table whose last
column contains a long `https://` URL.
2. Make the terminal narrow enough for the URL to wrap across multiple
bordered table rows.
3. Use the terminal's open-link or copy-link action on more than one
wrapped URL fragment and confirm each fragment resolves to the complete
original URL.
4. Resize the terminal after the table is rendered and repeat the link
action to confirm the destination survives scrollback replay.
5. Open the transcript overlay while rich output is present and confirm
web links remain interactive there.
6. As a regression check, render inline/fenced code containing URL text
and a Markdown link such as
`[https://example.com](mailto:support@example.com)`; confirm these do
not acquire a web OSC 8 destination.

Targeted automated coverage exercised Markdown links and exclusions,
wrapped and pipe-fallback tables, streaming/transcript overlay
propagation, status-link truncation, and rendered word-wrapping cell
alignment. `just test -p codex-tui` was also run; it passed the
hyperlink coverage and reproduced two unrelated existing guardian
feature-flag test failures.

Eric Traut b84c5898df tui: include exec sessions in resume list (#24503)
## Why

Fixes #24502.

`codex resume --include-non-interactive` should include sessions created
by `codex exec`, but the TUI was sending no `sourceKinds` filter to
`thread/list` for that mode. `thread/list` treats omitted or empty
`sourceKinds` as interactive-only (`cli`, `vscode`), so exec sessions
were still filtered out.

## What Changed

- Added a shared TUI `resume_source_kinds` helper so both resume lookup
paths always pass explicit `sourceKinds` to `thread/list`.
- Kept the default resume behavior scoped to `cli` and `vscode`.
- Made `--include-non-interactive` include `exec` and `appServer`
sessions, while continuing to exclude subagent and unknown sources.

## Verification

Added focused coverage for both affected TUI request builders:

- `latest_session_lookup_params_can_include_non_interactive_sources`
- `remote_thread_list_params_can_include_non_interactive_sources`
