a73485dc76 Allow exec callers to classify new threads (#40161)
## What changed

- Add a global `codex exec --thread-source <SOURCE>` option and propagate it to newly created and forked threads.
- Default the source to `user` when the option is omitted.
- Expose the classification as `threadSource` in the TypeScript SDK. It applies when a thread is first created and does not override the source when resuming an existing thread.

## Testing

- Cover CLI parsing and persisted metadata for new, resumed, and forked threads.
- Verify that the TypeScript SDK forwards `threadSource` only for new threads.

285abc0368 Configure PSP routing through the feature system (#38056)
## What changed

- Add the under-development `psp` feature and expose it in the config schema.
- Use the feature to attach the PSP cookie to first-party ChatGPT clients.
- Remove the hidden `--psp` flag and its process-scoped configuration plumbing.
- Preserve configured ChatGPT cookies when creating the PSP client used for GET and POST requests.

## Testing

- Update the config manager service test to verify that enabling `features.psp` retains the setting in the effective config and configures the expected ChatGPT cookie.

80858a8cce Add session forking to codex exec (#37367)
## What changed

- Add `codex exec fork <SESSION_ID> [PROMPT]` for creating a new thread from
  an existing session ID or thread name.
- Allow creating the fork without starting a turn, or immediately continue it
  with a prompt and optional images.
- Preserve the source thread ID in the emitted session configuration while
  leaving the source session unchanged.

## Testing

- Add CLI parsing coverage and an end-to-end test for promptless and prompted
  forks, thread naming, copied history, and unsupported promptless options.

1d952f027e Add process-scoped PSP routing for ChatGPT requests (#36986)
## What changed

- Add a hidden global `--psp` runtime flag and propagate it through TUI, exec,
  app-server, remote-control, and in-process startup paths.
- Attach the `oai-chat-psp=true` cookie to first-party ChatGPT requests when
  enabled, using a cached cookie-aware client with sensitive request logging
  disabled.
- Keep the routing selection out of persistent configuration layers while
  preserving it across config refreshes and agent role changes.

## Testing

- Cover global flag parsing, app-server propagation, config-layer isolation,
  and preservation across config rebuilds and role changes.

1c5f336c40 Remove legacy --full-auto handling from codex exec (#36054)
## What changed

Stop accepting the hidden, deprecated `--full-auto` flag in `codex exec` and
remove its implicit mapping to the `workspace-write` sandbox. Callers must now
select the sandbox mode explicitly with `--sandbox workspace-write`.

af6ffb6ebb Support --output-schema for exec resume (#23123)
## Why

`codex exec resume` should have the same structured-output support as
top-level `codex exec`. Without `--output-schema`, multi-turn automation
has to choose between resumed session context and schema-validated JSON
output.

Fixes #22998.

## What changed

- Marked `--output-schema` as a global `codex exec` flag so it can be
passed after `resume`.
- Reused the existing output schema plumbing so resumed turns attach the
schema to the final response request while preserving session context.

889ee018e7 config: add strict config parsing (#20559)
## Why

Codex intentionally ignores unknown `config.toml` fields by default so
older and newer config files keep working across versions. That leniency
also makes typo detection hard because misspelled or misplaced keys
disappear silently.

This change adds an opt-in strict config mode so users and tooling can
fail fast on unrecognized config fields without changing the default
permissive behavior.

This feature is possible because `serde_ignored` exposes the exact
signal Codex needs: it lets Codex run ordinary Serde deserialization
while recording fields Serde would otherwise ignore. That avoids
requiring `#[serde(deny_unknown_fields)]` across every config type and
keeps strict validation opt-in around the existing config model.

## What Changed

### Added strict config validation

- Added `serde_ignored`-based validation for `ConfigToml` in
`codex-rs/config/src/strict_config.rs`.
- Combined `serde_ignored` with `serde_path_to_error` so strict mode
preserves typed config error paths while also collecting fields Serde
would otherwise ignore.
- Added strict-mode validation for unknown `[features]` keys, including
keys that would otherwise be accepted by `FeaturesToml`'s flattened
boolean map.
- Kept typed config errors ahead of ignored-field reporting, so
malformed known fields are reported before unknown-field diagnostics.
- Added source-range diagnostics for top-level and nested unknown config
fields, including non-file managed preference source names.

### Kept parsing single-pass per source

- Reworked file and managed-config loading so strict validation reuses
the already parsed `TomlValue` for that source.
- For actual config files and managed config strings, the loader now
reads once, parses once, and validates that same parsed value instead of
deserializing multiple times.
- Validated `-c` / `--config` override layers with the same
base-directory context used for normal relative-path resolution, so
unknown override keys are still reported when another override contains
a relative path.

### Scoped `--strict-config` to config-heavy entry points

- Added support for `--strict-config` on the main config-loading entry
points where it is most useful:
  - `codex`
  - `codex resume`
  - `codex fork`
  - `codex exec`
  - `codex review`
  - `codex mcp-server`
  - `codex app-server` when running the server itself
  - the standalone `codex-app-server` binary
  - the standalone `codex-exec` binary
- Commands outside that set now reject `--strict-config` early with
targeted errors instead of accepting it everywhere through shared CLI
plumbing.
- `codex app-server` subcommands such as `proxy`, `daemon`, and
`generate-*` are intentionally excluded from the first rollout.
- When app-server strict mode sees invalid config, app-server exits with
the config error instead of logging a warning and continuing with
defaults.
- Introduced a dedicated `ReviewCommand` wrapper in `codex-rs/cli`
instead of extending shared `ReviewArgs`, so `--strict-config` stays on
the outer config-loading command surface and does not become part of the
reusable review payload used by `codex exec review`.

### Coverage

- Added tests for top-level and nested unknown config fields, unknown
`[features]` keys, typed-error precedence, source-location reporting,
and non-file managed preference source names.
- Added CLI coverage showing invalid `--enable`, invalid `--disable`,
and unknown `-c` overrides still error when `--strict-config` is
present, including compound-looking feature names such as
`multi_agent_v2.subagent_usage_hint_text`.
- Added integration coverage showing both `codex app-server
--strict-config` and standalone `codex-app-server --strict-config` exit
with an error for unknown config fields instead of starting with
fallback defaults.
- Added coverage showing unsupported command surfaces reject
`--strict-config` with explicit errors.

## Example Usage

Run Codex with strict config validation enabled:

```

Strict config mode is also available on the supported config-heavy
subcommands:

```shell
codex --strict-config exec "explain this repository"
codex review --strict-config --uncommitted
codex mcp-server --strict-config
codex app-server --strict-config --listen off
codex-app-server --strict-config --listen off
```

For example, if `~/.codex/config.toml` contains a typo in a key name:

```toml
model = "gpt-5"
approval_polic = "on-request"
```

then `codex --strict-config` reports the misspelled key instead of
silently ignoring it. The path is shortened to `~` here for readability:

Without `--strict-config`, Codex keeps the existing permissive behavior
and ignores the unknown key.

Strict config mode also validates ad-hoc `-c` / `--config` overrides:

$ codex --strict-config -c features.foo=true
Error: unknown configuration field `features.foo` in -c/--config override

Invalid feature toggles are rejected too, including values that look
like nested config paths:

Unsupported commands reject the flag explicitly:

## Verification

The `codex-cli` `strict_config` tests cover invalid `--enable`, invalid
`--disable`, the compound `multi_agent_v2.subagent_usage_hint_text`
case, unknown `-c` overrides, app-server strict startup failure through
`codex app-server`, and rejection for unsupported commands such as
`codex cloud`, `codex mcp`, `codex remote-control`, and `codex
app-server proxy`.

The config and config-loader tests cover unknown top-level fields,
unknown nested fields, unknown `[features]` keys, source-location
reporting, non-file managed config sources, and `-c` validation for keys
such as `features.foo`.

The app-server test suite covers standalone `codex-app-server
--strict-config` startup failure for an unknown config field.

## Documentation

The Codex CLI docs on developers.openai.com/codex should mention
`--strict-config` as an opt-in validation mode for supported
config-heavy entry points once this ships.

392e94e9ea add --dangerously-bypass-hook-trust CLI flag (#21768)
# Why

Hook trust happens through the TUI in `/hooks` so it can block
non-interactive use cases. This flag will allow users that are using
codex headlessly to bypass hooks when they want to.

# What

This adds one invocation-scoped escape hatch.

- the CLI flag sets a runtime-only `bypass_hook_trust` override; there
is no durable `config.toml` setting
- hook discovery still respects normal enablement, so explicitly
disabled hooks remain disabled
- we show a `--dangerously-bypass-hook-trust is enabled. Enabled hooks
may run without review for this invocation.` message on startup so
accidental use is visible in both interactive and exec flows

This keeps “enabled” and “trusted” as separate concepts in the normal
path, while giving CI/E2E callers a stable way to opt into the
exceptional path when they already control the hook set.

3d10ba9f36 chore(cli) deprecate --full-auto (#20133)
## Summary
Starts the process of getting rid of `--full-auto`, with some
concessions:
1. Fully removes the command from the tui, since it just resolves to the
default permissions there, and encourages users to use the one-time
trust flow if they're not in a trusted repo.
2. Marks the command as deprecated in `codex exec`, in case users are
actively relying on this. We'll remove in an upcoming n+X release.
3. Cleans up some of the `codex sandbox` cli logic, to keep supporting
legacy sandbox policies for now.

This isn't the cleanest setup, but I think it is worthwhile to warn
users for one release before hard-removing it.

0f1c9b8963 Fix exec inheritance of root shared flags (#18630)
Addresses #18113

Problem: Shared flags provided before the exec subcommand were parsed by
the root CLI but not inherited by the exec CLI, so exec sessions could
run with stale or default sandbox and model configuration.

Solution: Move shared TUI and exec flags into a common option block and
merge root selections into exec before dispatch, while preserving exec's
global subcommand flag behavior.

e65ee38579 Clarify codex exec approval help (#16888)
Addresses #13614

Problem: `codex exec --help` implied that `--full-auto` also changed
exec approval mode, even though non-interactive exec stays headless and
does not support interactive approval prompts.

Solution: clarify the `--full-auto` help text so it only describes the
sandbox behavior it actually enables for `codex exec`.

Problem: `codex exec --help` advertised a second positional `[COMMAND]`
even though `exec` only accepts a prompt or a subcommand.

Solution: Override the `exec` usage string so the help output shows the
two supported invocation forms instead of the phantom positional.

95b0b5a204 chore: move codex-exec unit tests into sibling files (#16581)
## Why

`codex-rs/exec/src/lib.rs` already keeps unit tests in a sibling
`lib_tests.rs` module so the implementation stays top-heavy and easier
to read. This applies that same layout to the rest of
`codex-rs/exec/src` so each production file keeps its entry points and
helpers ahead of test code.

## What

- Move inline unit tests out of `cli.rs`, `main.rs`,
`event_processor_with_human_output.rs`, and
`event_processor_with_jsonl_output.rs` into sibling `*_tests.rs` files.
- Keep test modules wired through `#[cfg(test)]` plus `#[path = "..."]
mod tests;`, matching the `lib.rs` pattern.
- Preserve the existing test coverage and assertions while making this a
source-layout-only refactor.

## Verification

- `cargo test -p codex-exec`

71923f43a7 Support Codex CLI stdin piping for codex exec (#15917)
# Summary

Claude Code supports a useful prompt-plus-stdin workflow:

```bash
echo "complex input..." | claude -p "summarize concisely"
```

Codex previously did not support the equivalent `codex exec` form. While
`codex exec` could read the prompt from stdin, it could not combine
piped input with an explicit prompt argument.

This change adds that missing workflow:

```bash
echo "complex input..." | codex exec "summarize concisely"
```

With this change, when `codex exec` receives both a positional prompt
and piped stdin, the prompt remains the instruction and stdin is passed
along as structured `<stdin>...</stdin>` context.

Example:

```bash
curl https://jsonplaceholder.typicode.com/comments \
  | ./target/debug/codex exec --skip-git-repo-check "format the top 20 items into a markdown table" \
  > table.md
```

This PR also adds regression coverage for:
- prompt argument + piped stdin
- legacy stdin-as-prompt behavior
- `codex exec -` forced-stdin behavior
- empty-stdin error cases

45f68843b8 Finish moving codex exec to app-server (#15424)
This PR completes the conversion of non-interactive `codex exec` to use
app server rather than directly using core events and methods.

### Summary
- move `codex-exec` off exec-owned `AuthManager` and `ThreadManager`
state
- route exec bootstrap, resume, and auth refresh through existing
app-server paths
- replace legacy `codex/event/*` decoding in exec with typed app-server
notification handling
- update human and JSONL exec output adapters to translate existing
app-server notifications only
- clean up "app server client" layer by eliminating support for legacy
notifications; this is no longer needed
- remove exposure of `authManager` and `threadManager` from "app server
client" layer

### Testing
- `exec` has pretty extensive unit and integration tests already, and
these all pass
- In addition, I asked Codex to put together a comprehensive manual set
of tests to cover all of the `codex exec` functionality (including
command-line options), and it successfully generated and ran these tests

dcab40123f Agent jobs (spawn_agents_on_csv) + progress UI (#10935)
## Summary
- Add agent job support: spawn a batch of sub-agents from CSV, auto-run,
auto-export, and store results in SQLite.
- Simplify workflow: remove run/resume/get-status/export tools; spawn is
deterministic and completes in one call.
- Improve exec UX: stable, single-line progress bar with ETA; suppress
sub-agent chatter in exec.

## Why
Enables map-reduce style workflows over arbitrarily large repos using
the existing Codex orchestrator. This addresses review feedback about
overly complex job controls and non-deterministic monitoring.

8b7f8af343 feat: split codex-common into smaller utils crates (#11422)
We are removing feature-gated shared crates from the `codex-rs`
workspace. `codex-common` grouped several unrelated utilities behind
`[features]`, which made dependency boundaries harder to reason about
and worked against the ongoing effort to eliminate feature flags from
workspace crates.

Splitting these utilities into dedicated crates under `utils/` aligns
this area with existing workspace structure and keeps each dependency
explicit at the crate boundary.

## What changed

- Removed `codex-rs/common` (`codex-common`) from workspace members and
workspace dependencies.
- Added six new utility crates under `codex-rs/utils/`:
  - `codex-utils-cli`
  - `codex-utils-elapsed`
  - `codex-utils-sandbox-summary`
  - `codex-utils-approval-presets`
  - `codex-utils-oss`
  - `codex-utils-fuzzy-match`
- Migrated the corresponding modules out of `codex-common` into these
crates (with tests), and added matching `BUILD.bazel` targets.
- Updated direct consumers to use the new crates instead of
`codex-common`:
  - `codex-rs/cli`
  - `codex-rs/tui`
  - `codex-rs/exec`
  - `codex-rs/app-server`
  - `codex-rs/mcp-server`
  - `codex-rs/chatgpt`
  - `codex-rs/cloud-tasks`
- Updated workspace lockfile entries to reflect the new dependency graph
and removal of `codex-common`.

Session renaming:
- `/rename my_session`
- `/rename` without arg and passing an argument in `customViewPrompt`
- AppExitInfo shows resume hint using the session name if set instead of
uuid, defaults to uuid if not set
- Names are stored in `CODEX_HOME/sessions.jsonl`

Session resuming:
- codex resume <name> lookup for `CODEX_HOME/sessions.jsonl` first entry
matching the name and resumes the session

7c96f2e84c Fix resume --last with --json option (#9475)
Fix resume --last prompt parsing by dropping the clap conflict on the
codex resume subcommand so a positional prompt is accepted when --last
is set. This aligns interactive resume behavior with exec-mode logic and
avoids the “--last cannot be used with SESSION_ID” error.

This addresses #6717

fe03320791 ollama: default to Responses API for built-ins (#8798)
This is an alternate PR to solving the same problem as
<https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/8227>.

In this PR, when Ollama is used via `--oss` (or via `model_provider =
"ollama"`), we default it to use the Responses format. At runtime, we do
an Ollama version check, and if the version is older than when Responses
support was added to Ollama, we print out a warning.

Because there's no way of configuring the wire api for a built-in
provider, we temporarily add a new `oss_provider`/`model_provider`
called `"ollama-chat"` that will force the chat format.

Once the `"chat"` format is fully removed (see
<https://github.com/openai/codex/discussions/7782>), `ollama-chat` can
be removed as well

5f8776d34d Allow global exec flags after resume and fix CI codex build/timeout (#8440)
**Motivation**
- Bring `codex exec resume` to parity with top‑level flags so global
options (git check bypass, json, model, sandbox toggles) work after the
subcommand, including when outside a git repo.

**Description**
- Exec CLI: mark `--skip-git-repo-check`, `--json`, `--model`,
`--full-auto`, and `--dangerously-bypass-approvals-and-sandbox` as
global so they’re accepted after `resume`.
- Tests: add `exec_resume_accepts_global_flags_after_subcommand` to
verify those flags work when passed after `resume`.

**Testing**
- `just fmt`
- `cargo test -p codex-exec` (pass; ran with elevated perms to allow
network/port binds)
- Manual: exercised `codex exec resume` with global flags after the
subcommand to confirm behavior.

e4257f432e codex-exec: allow resume --last to read prompt #6717 (#6719)
### Description

- codex exec --json resume --last "<prompt>" bailed out because clap
treated the prompt as SESSION_ID. I removed the conflicts_with flag and
reinterpret that positional as a prompt when
--last is set, so the flow now keeps working in JSON mode.
(codex-rs/exec/src/cli.rs:84-104, codex-rs/exec/src/lib.rs:75-130)
- Added a regression test that exercises resume --last in JSON mode to
ensure the prompt is accepted and the rollout file is updated.
(codex-rs/exec/tests/suite/resume.rs:126-178)

837bc98a1d LM Studio OSS Support (#2312)
## Overview

Adds LM Studio OSS support. Closes #1883


### Changes
This PR enhances the behavior of `--oss` flag to support LM Studio as a
provider. Additionally, it introduces a new flag`--local-provider` which
can take in `lmstudio` or `ollama` as values if the user wants to
explicitly choose which one to use.

If no provider is specified `codex --oss` will auto-select the provider
based on whichever is running.

#### Additional enhancements 
The default can be set using `oss-provider` in config like:

oss_provider = "lmstudio"
```

For non-interactive users, they will need to either provide the provider
as an arg or have it in their `config.toml`

### Notes
For best performance, [set the default context
length](https://lmstudio.ai/docs/app/advanced/per-model) for gpt-oss to
the maximum your machine can support

Adds support for specifying additional directories in the TypeScript SDK
through a new `additionalDirectories` option in `ThreadOptions`.

## Changes

eb1c651c00 Update full-auto description with on-request (#6523)
This PR fixes #6522 by correcting the comment for `full-auto` in both
`codex-rs/exec/src/cli.rs` and `codex-rs/tui/src/cli.rs` from `-a
on-failure` to `-a on-request` to make it coherent with
`codex-rs/tui/src/lib.rs:97-105`:

042d4d55d9 feat: codex exec writes only the final message to stdout (#4644)
This updates `codex exec` so that, by default, most of the agent's
activity is written to stderr so that only the final agent message is
written to stdout. This makes it easier to pipe `codex exec` into
another tool without extra filtering.

I introduced `#![deny(clippy::print_stdout)]` to help enforce this
change and renamed the `ts_println!()` macro to `ts_msg()` because (1)
it no longer calls `println!()` and (2), `ts_eprintln!()` seemed too
long of a name.

While here, this also adds `-o` as an alias for `--output-last-message`.

This pull request add a new experimental format of JSON output.

You can try it using `codex exec --experimental-json`.

Design takes a lot of inspiration from Responses API items and stream
format.

# Session and items
Each invocation of `codex exec` starts or resumes a session. 

Session contains multiple high-level item types:
1. Assistant message 
2. Assistant thinking 
3. Command execution 
4. File changes
5. To-do lists
6. etc.

# Events 
Session and items are going through their life cycles which is
represented by events.

Session is `session.created` or `session.resumed`
Items are `item.added`, `item.updated`, `item.completed`,
`item.require_approval` (or other item types like `item.output_delta`
when we need streaming).

The idea is to give users fully formatted items they can use directly in
their rendering/application logic and avoid having them building up
items manually based on events (unless they want to for streaming).

This PR implements only the `item.completed` payload for some event
types, more event types and item types to come.

- I added a function to find the path in `~/.codex/sessions/` with a
`UUID`. This is helpful in resuming with session id.

9285350842 Introduce --oss flag to use gpt-oss models (#1848)
This adds support for easily running Codex backed by a local Ollama
instance running our new open source models. See
https://github.com/openai/gpt-oss for details.

If you pass in `--oss` you'll be prompted to install/launch ollama, and
it will automatically download the 20b model and attempt to use it.

We'll likely want to expand this with some options later to make the
experience smoother for users who can't run the 20b or want to run the
120b.

e16657ca45 feat: add --json flag to codex exec (#1603)
This is designed to facilitate programmatic use of Codex in a more
lightweight way than using `codex mcp`.

Passing `--json` to `codex exec` will print each event as a line of JSON
to stdout. Note that it does not print the individual tokens as they are
streamed, only full messages, as this is aimed at programmatic use
rather than to power UI.

I changed the existing `EventProcessor` into a trait and moved the
implementation to `EventProcessorWithHumanOutput`. Then I introduced an

e0c08cea4f feat: add support for --sandbox flag (#1476)
On a high-level, we try to design `config.toml` so that you don't have
to "comment out a lot of stuff" when testing different options.

Previously, defining a sandbox policy was somewhat at odds with this
principle because you would define the policy as attributes of
`[sandbox]` like so:

writable_roots = [ "/tmp" ]
```

but if you wanted to temporarily change to a read-only sandbox, you
might feel compelled to modify your file to be:

[sandbox]
mode = "read-only"
# mode = "workspace-write"
# writable_roots = [ "/tmp" ]
```

Technically, commenting out `writable_roots` would not be strictly
necessary, as `mode = "read-only"` would ignore `writable_roots`, but
it's still a reasonable thing to do to keep things tidy.

Currently, the various values for `mode` do not support that many
attributes, so this is not that hard to maintain, but one could imagine
this becoming more complex in the future.

In this PR, we change Codex CLI so that it no longer recognizes
`[sandbox]`. Instead, it introduces a top-level option, `sandbox_mode`,
and `[sandbox_workspace_write]` is used to further configure the sandbox
when when `sandbox_mode = "workspace-write"` is used:

writable_roots = [ "/tmp" ]
```

This feels a bit more future-proof in that it is less tedious to
configure different sandboxes:

[sandbox_danger_full_access]

```

In this scheme, you never need to comment out the configuration for an
individual sandbox type: you only need to redefine `sandbox_mode`.

Relatedly, previous to this change, a user had to do `-c
sandbox.mode=read-only` to change the mode on the command line. With
this change, things are arguably a bit cleaner because the equivalent
option is `-c sandbox_mode=read-only` (and now `-c
sandbox_workspace_write=...` can be set separately).

Though more importantly, we introduce the `-s/--sandbox` option to the
CLI, which maps directly to `sandbox_mode` in `config.toml`, making
config override behavior easier to reason about. Moreover, as you can
see in the updates to the various Markdown files, it is much easier to
explain how to configure sandboxing when things like `--sandbox
read-only` can be used as an example.

Relatedly, this cleanup also made it straightforward to add support for
a `sandbox` option for Codex when used as an MCP server (see the changes
to `mcp-server/src/codex_tool_config.rs`).

50924101d2 feat: add --dangerously-bypass-approvals-and-sandbox (#1384)
This PR reworks `assess_command_safety()` so that the combination of
`AskForApproval::Never` and `SandboxPolicy::DangerFullAccess` ensures
that commands are run without _any_ sandbox and the user should never be
prompted. In turn, it adds support for a new
`--dangerously-bypass-approvals-and-sandbox` flag (that cannot be used
with `--approval-policy` or `--full-auto`) that sets both of those
options.

0776d78357 feat: redesign sandbox config (#1373)
This is a major redesign of how sandbox configuration works and aims to
fix https://github.com/openai/codex/issues/1248. Specifically, it
replaces `sandbox_permissions` in `config.toml` (and the
`-s`/`--sandbox-permission` CLI flags) with a "table" with effectively
three variants:

This should make sandboxing easier to reason about. While we have
dropped support for `-s`, the way it works now is:

- no flags => `read-only`
- `--full-auto` => `workspace-write`
- currently, there is no way to specify `danger-full-access` via a CLI
flag, but we will revisit that as part of
https://github.com/openai/codex/issues/1254

Outstanding issue:

- As noted in the `TODO` on `SandboxPolicy::is_unrestricted()`, we are
still conflating sandbox preferences with approval preferences in that
case, which needs to be cleaned up.

ae743d56b0 feat: for codex exec, if PROMPT is not specified, read from stdin if not a TTY (#1178)
This attempts to make `codex exec` more flexible in how the prompt can
be passed:

* as before, it can be passed as a single string argument
* if `-` is passed as the value, the prompt is read from stdin
* if no argument is passed _and stdin is a tty_, prints a warning to
stderr that no prompt was specified an exits non-zero.
* if no argument is passed _and stdin is NOT a tty_, prints `Reading
prompt from stdin...` to stderr to let the user know that Codex will
wait until it reads EOF from stdin to proceed. (You can repro this case
by doing `yes | just exec` since stdin is not a TTY in that case but it
also never reaches EOF).
