b01c3986fd Add live WebRTC voice conversations to the TUI (#43581)
## What changed

- Add feature-gated `/voice`, `/voice mute`, and `/voice stop` commands with local WebRTC audio and app-server signaling.
- Show live transcripts, conversation status, and microphone and speaker levels. Preserve captions and undelivered answers across thread switches.
- Speak final answers from voice handoffs while keeping delegated reasoning and commentary hidden and typed answers unspoken.
- Retry eligible startup failures once and clean up voice sessions on thread switches and disconnects.
- Stop voice and block late handoffs after a misalignment policy violation. Remove realtime event payloads and spoken text from receipt and debug logs.

## Testing

Add coverage for voice command mapping, rejected starts, disconnect cleanup, delegated final-answer speech, late handoff rejection, and transcript and footer rendering.

64e9a68987 Add a helper-backed realtime WebRTC session API (#43097)
## What changed

- Add `RealtimeWebrtcSession` and cloneable handles for startup, answer negotiation, audio controls, level meters, and error reporting.
- Open devices after answer negotiation and apply the latest controls before enabling audio. Preserve subsequent control transitions in order and close the session if the command queue fills.
- Cancel pending work on explicit close, external cancellation, or final handle drop, with a shared runtime keeping helper reaping alive.
- Add audio-state polling to consume microphone and speaker peaks and detect helper, device, or connection failures.
- Check packaged helper/runtime availability and initialize build information in the standalone TUI for the helper handshake.

## Testing

Add unit and helper-process integration tests covering startup control ordering, queue overflow, cancellation, helper reaping and loss, package availability, SDP debug redaction, and peak accumulation, clamping, and consumption.

3525845978 Support managed worktrees for interactive sessions and forks (#43069)
## Why

`--worktree` previously supported only `codex exec` and `codex exec fork`. Interactive sessions need the same managed checkout support, with configuration and policy resolved for the destination before starting a turn.

## What changed

- Enable `codex --worktree` and `codex fork --worktree <session-id>` behind the `worktrees` feature, restricted to local sessions. Interactive forks require an explicit session selector.
- Resolve interactive and exec worktree forks from the session's latest saved working directory unless `--cd` is supplied. Keep relative `--add-dir` paths anchored to the invocation directory.
- Load interactive destination configuration before telemetry and login policy initialization, and bind checkout ownership before the first turn.
- Reject explicitly untrusted sources, including when destination cloud policy or refreshed configuration reveals distrust. Retain unbound interactive checkouts after startup failure and report manual recovery instructions.

## Testing

Add CLI integration and TUI tests for startup and named forks, destination instructions and configuration, ownership before the first request, trust enforcement, and retained-checkout recovery. Extend exec coverage for saved fork directories, explicit `--cd`, relative writable roots, and cloud policy rejection.

6ae8dcf6e1 Add TUI building blocks for inline async question editing (#42889)
## What changed

- Introduce an async-question editor component with per-question drafts, navigation, replay deduplication, and submit or queue handling using the shared composer.
- Add bounded `AnsweredQuestion` framing that truncates question text at a UTF-8 boundary and flattens line breaks before prepending it to an answer.
- Add `prompt_stack_back` and `skip_question` keybinding actions and the `tui.question_esc_back` setting. Normalize `Ctrl+]` and `Ctrl+5` for key matching and conflict detection, and let default question shortcuts yield to explicit bindings.
- Flush buffered typing in both the main composer and the covering view so background input cannot keep the draw loop waiting.

The async-question component is not yet connected to the TUI event flow.

## Testing

Add regression coverage for bounded Unicode question framing, question-shortcut conflicts, and paste-buffer flushing in background and covering editors.

7a8092a447 Preserve Markdown formatting when copying TUI responses (#42847)
## What changed

- Add rendered HTML alongside the original Markdown when copying a whole response through the native clipboard, so rich-text destinations preserve headings, lists, tables, code, and other formatting.
- Keep code-block, blockquote, transcript, terminal, and WSL clipboard copies as plain text.
- Escape raw HTML, omit remote image sources, and render unsupported link destinations as visible text when producing clipboard HTML.

## Testing

- Add coverage for rich formatting, local and unsafe links, inert images, fenced tables, copy selection formats, and clipboard fallbacks.

b7f710273e Support the app-server daemon on Windows (#42405)
## Why

The managed app-server daemon and automatic TUI attachment were limited to
Unix, so Windows users could not share a background server across Codex
sessions.

## What changed

- Enable daemon lifecycle commands, `codex agents` startup, and AF_UNIX daemon
  discovery on Windows.
- Require Windows daemons to start non-elevated and verify the discovered
  socket directory and peer before connecting.
- Preflight detached process support, preserve path-based environment settings,
  and keep daemon processes out of the launching project's working directory.
- Fall back to an embedded server when an implicitly discovered daemon cannot
  connect, while preserving errors for explicit remote endpoints and bypassing
  daemon reuse when `CODEX_EXEC_SERVER_URL` is set.

## Testing

Add coverage for Windows launch restrictions and socket validation, implicit
connection fallback, executor selection, daemon discovery, and the agents
dashboard startup result.

a8468330bb Add TUI tools for managing Codex tasks (#40308)
## Why

The TUI rejected app-server dynamic tool calls as unsupported, so agents could
not inspect or manage other Codex tasks through a TUI session.

## What changed

- Add the `codex_tui` tool namespace for listing, reading, waiting on, creating,
  forking, messaging, renaming, archiving, and restoring tasks.
- Handle tool calls through existing app-server thread operations, with bounded
  inputs and responses and cleanup when calls complete or the TUI disconnects.
- Route delegation tools through an authenticated local MCP server with explicit
  approval prompts, while respecting configured and managed MCP policies.
- Fall back to starting threads without dynamic tools when connected to an older
  app server that does not support them.

## Testing

Add coverage for tool schemas and response bounds, task lifecycle operations,
approval-gated MCP transport, namespace dispatch, cancellation, and legacy
app-server fallback behavior.

63002bdb26 Extract persisted history types into a dedicated crate (#37871)
## What changed

- Add `codex-history` for model-history and persisted-rollout domain types, including `RolloutItem`, `RolloutLine`, `CompactedItem`, and initial/resumed history state.
- Re-export the persisted types from `codex-rollout` and update consumers to use the new crate boundary instead of `codex-protocol`.
- Preserve existing rollout serialization, including legacy numeric compacted-window IDs.

## Testing

- Add `codex-history` tests for rollout JSON round trips, compacted-history compatibility, persisted history modes, and multi-agent version selection.

09cf609218 Route pet asset downloads through the shared HTTP client (#36008)
## Why

Built-in pet downloads used a standalone blocking client, so CDN redirects did
not use Codex's configured route handling.

## What changed

- Download pet spritesheets asynchronously with a reusable
  `RouteAwareClientPool`.
- Keep cache validation, asset installation, and pet decoding off the async
  runtime while sharing one asset-and-load path across startup, previews, and
  selection.
- Preserve the download size limit while consuming streamed response chunks,
  and remove the TUI's direct `reqwest` dependency.

## Testing

Add coverage for oversized response chunks, cached built-in assets, pet loads
without an existing Tokio runtime, and stale preview and selection completions.

8bbdf6c8f9 Use the shared HTTP client for TUI network checks (#35821)
## Why

TUI update checks and local OSS provider detection constructed their own HTTP
clients instead of using Codex's shared client behavior.

## What changed

- Route update requests through the configured route-aware client pool while
  retaining the existing default headers and custom CA fallback.
- Probe the hardcoded LM Studio and Ollama loopback endpoints with a shared
  direct client and a per-request timeout.
- Limit the legacy invalid-custom-CA fallback to the default routing policy so
  system-proxy routing still reports certificate configuration errors.

## Testing

Add coverage for local provider probes with invalid `CODEX_CA_CERTIFICATE` and
`SSL_CERT_FILE` values, and for custom CA fallback under both routing policies.

b6de5b524c Use app-server skill metadata directly in the TUI (#34368)
## Why

The TUI already receives skill metadata from the app-server protocol, but converted it into the core-skills model before using it.

## What changed

- Use `codex_app_server_protocol::SkillMetadata` throughout skill toggles, mentions, and input submission.
- Remove the protocol-to-core conversion and the TUI's `codex-core-skills` dependency.

678157acaa Avoid redundant TUI subagent metadata requests (#34234)
## What changed

- Skip loaded-subagent backfills for fresh and forked threads, which cannot have pre-existing descendants.
- Keep the backfill after resuming a thread so agent navigation is populated immediately.
- Reuse thread status collected during backfill when opening the agent picker, avoiding duplicate `thread/read` requests while preserving liveness from live event channels.

## Testing

- Add a WebSocket-backed session lifecycle test that records app-server requests across fork, fresh-session, resume, and agent-picker flows.

5a67d898a5 Allow ChatGPT accounts without email (#28991)
# Summary

Codex required every ChatGPT account to have an email address. A
service-account personal access token can return valid account metadata
without one, so PAT login failed while decoding the metadata response.

This change makes email optional in the account metadata type that owns
it and preserves that absence through authentication, provider account
state, the app-server API, generated clients, and TUI bootstrap.
Existing accounts with email addresses keep the same behavior.

## Behavior-changing call sites

| Call site | Behavior after this change |
| --- | --- |
| `login/src/auth/personal_access_token.rs` | PAT metadata accepts a
missing or null email and retains `None`. |
| `agent-identity/src/lib.rs` | Agent Identity JWT claims accept an
omitted email. |
| `login/src/auth/storage.rs` and `login/src/auth/agent_identity.rs` |
Stored and managed Agent Identity records carry `Option<String>`.
Deserialization maps the legacy empty-string sentinel to `None`. |
| `login/src/auth/manager.rs` | `get_account_email` returns the stored
option, and managed identity bootstrap no longer converts `None` to an
empty string. |
| `model-provider/src/provider.rs` and `protocol/src/account.rs` | A
ChatGPT provider account requires a plan type but may carry no email. |
| `app-server-protocol/src/protocol/v2/account.rs` | `account/read`
keeps the `email` field on the wire and returns `null` when the account
has no email. Generated TypeScript and JSON schemas describe a required,
nullable field. |
| `sdk/python/src/openai_codex/generated/v2_all.py` | The generated
Python `ChatgptAccount` model accepts `None` for email. |
| `tui/src/app_server_session.rs` | Email-less ChatGPT accounts
bootstrap normally, keep external feedback routing, omit account-email
telemetry, and display the plan in account status. |

## Design decisions

- Missing email remains `None` at every layer. The code never uses an
empty string as a substitute.
- The app-server response includes `"email": null` instead of omitting
the field. Clients retain a stable response shape.
- Plan type remains required for provider account state. This change
relaxes only the email assumption.

## Testing

Tests: affected test targets compile, scoped Clippy and formatting pass,
a focused TUI snapshot covers plan-only account status, real
before/after PAT login smoke covers metadata without email, app-server
smoke covers `account/read` with `email: null`, and a regression smoke
covers an existing email-bearing PAT. Unit tests run in CI.

## Evidence

Visual smoke evidence will be attached here.

dce673905a core: load AGENTS.md from foreign environments (#28958)
## Why

Make it possible to load AGENTS.md from remote exec-servers whose OS is
different than app-server.

## What

- keep `AGENTS.md` discovery and provenance as `PathUri`, with
root-aware parent and ancestor traversal
- expose lifecycle instruction sources as legacy app-server path strings
in events while retaining `PathUri` internally
- preserve and test mixed POSIX and Windows paths in model context and
TUI status output
- cover remote Windows loading end to end by seeding the Wine prefix
through host filesystem APIs
- fix bug in `PathUri`'s parent() implementation that would erase
Windows drive letters

ecfe174d5f Use ApiPathString in app-server filesystem permission paths (#28367)
## Why

Clients running an app-server on one OS and an exec-server on another OS
need to be able to pass sandbox config to app-server that refers to
resources on the executor's foreign OS.

## What

`AbsolutePathBuf` can't represent these paths and we don't want users to
be exposed to `PathUri` yet, so this moves the public app-server API to
be expressed in terms of `ApiPathString`.

Stacked on #28165.

- change app-server v2 filesystem permission paths, including legacy
read/write roots, to `ApiPathString`
- localize API paths through `PathUri` when converting into the current
native core permission types
- make path-bearing permission conversions fallible and surface
localization failures instead of silently treating malformed grants as
ordinary denials
- propagate conversion failures through app-server and TUI approval
handling
- regenerate the app-server JSON and TypeScript schemas
- leave migration TODOs on native-path conversions so they can be
removed once core permission paths use `PathUri`

0b3a6f7185 Move cloud requirements crate to cloud config (#24621)
## Summary

- Moves the existing `codex-cloud-requirements` crate to
`codex-cloud-config`.
- Updates workspace dependencies and imports to the new crate name.
- Intentionally keeps runtime behavior unchanged: this still fetches the
legacy cloud requirements endpoint.

## Details

This PR exists to make the lineage obvious before the bundle migration.
GitHub should show the old `codex-rs/cloud-requirements/src/lib.rs`
implementation as moved to `codex-rs/cloud-config/src/lib.rs`, rather
than as unrelated new code.

The follow-up PR adapts this moved crate to the new config bundle API
and switches runtime consumers over.

cd934c8bcb tui: keep inaccessible apps out of mentions (#24625)
## Summary

Fix the TUI `$` app mention paths so App Directory rows that are not
accessible are not treated as usable apps.

This includes the core preservation fix from #24104, but expands it to
the other app mention paths:

- preserve app-server `is_accessible` flags when partial
`app/list/updated` snapshots reach the TUI
- require apps to be both accessible and enabled when resolving exact
`$slug` mentions
- require restored/stale `app://...` bindings to point at accessible,
enabled apps before emitting structured app mentions
- remove the now-unused `codex-chatgpt` dependency from `codex-tui`,
which addresses the `cargo shear` failure seen on #24104

## Root Cause

The app server already sends merged app snapshots with accessibility
computed. The TUI handled app-server app list updates as partial app
loads and re-ran the old accessible-app merge path. That path treated
every notification row as accessible, so App Directory entries with
`isAccessible=false` could appear in `$` suggestions.

Regression source: #22914 routed app-list updates through the app server
while reusing the old TUI partial-load handling. Related precursor:
#14717 introduced the partial-load path, but #22914 made it user-visible
for app-server updates.

3dc278b68e Trim TUI legacy core helper usage (#22695)
## Why

The TUI still had a few low-risk dependencies flowing through the
transitional `legacy_core` namespace after the app-server migration.
These helpers either already have clearer non-core owners or are
presentation logic that does not belong in `codex-core`, so moving them
out reduces the compatibility surface without changing product behavior.

## What changed

This is a low-risk change, almost completely mechanical in nature.

- Route TUI Codex-home lookup through `codex-utils-home-dir`, use
`Config::log_dir` directly, and call
`codex-sandboxing::system_bwrap_warning` without going through
`legacy_core`.
- Move shared `codex resume` hint formatting from `codex-core` into
`codex-utils-cli`.
- Update CLI and TUI call sites to use the shared CLI utility, and keep
the resume-command behavior covered by tests in its new home.

## Verification

- `cargo test -p codex-utils-cli resume_command`

35451ba79c Simplify TUI startup test coverage (#22573)
## Why

The TUI startup test surface had drifted into expensive, brittle
coverage:

- `tui/tests/suite/no_panic_on_startup.rs` was already ignored as flaky
while still spawning a PTY to exercise malformed exec-policy rules.
- `tui/tests/suite/model_availability_nux.rs` used a seeded session,
cursor-query spoofing, and repeated interrupts to verify a narrow
resume-path invariant.
- `app/tests.rs` had started accumulating unrelated startup and summary
coverage in one flat module even after the surrounding app code was
split into feature modules.

This keeps those behaviors covered while making the tests cheaper to
understand and less likely to rot. It also preserves the malformed-rules
regression from #8803 without requiring a terminal orchestration test.

## What changed

- Replaced the malformed `rules` startup PTY case with a direct
exec-policy loader regression:

[`rules_path_file_returns_read_dir_error`](21b6b5622f/codex-rs/core/src/exec_policy_tests.rs (L264-L284))
- Made the existing fresh-session-only startup tooltip behavior explicit
with

[`should_prepare_startup_tooltip_override`](21b6b5622f/codex-rs/tui/src/app/thread_routing.rs (L1272-L1279)),
then added focused coverage for the resume/fork gate and the persisted
NUX counter.
- Split startup and session-summary coverage out of
`tui/src/app/tests.rs` into dedicated modules so the test layout better
mirrors the current app architecture.
- Converted one single-message goal validation snapshot into semantic
assertions where layout was not the behavior under test.
- Removed the two PTY-heavy suite files that the narrower tests now
supersede.

## Verification

96833c5b15 Remove CODEX_RS_SSE_FIXTURE test hook (#22413)
## Why

`CODEX_RS_SSE_FIXTURE` let integration-style CLI, exec, and TUI tests
bypass the normal Responses transport by reading SSE from local files.
That kept test-only behavior wired through production client code. The
affected tests can stay hermetic by using the existing
`core_test_support::responses` mock server and passing `openai_base_url`
instead.

## What Changed

- Removed the `CODEX_RS_SSE_FIXTURE` flag,
`codex_api::stream_from_fixture`, the `env-flags` dependency, and the
checked-in SSE fixture files.
- Repointed the affected core, exec, and TUI tests at `MockServer` with

95b332c820 feat(tui): add ambient terminal pets (#21206)
## Why

The Codex App has animated pets, but the TUI had no equivalent ambient
companion surface. This brings that experience into terminal Codex while
keeping the main chat flow usable: the pet should feel present, but it
cannot cover transcript text, composer input, approvals, or picker
content.

The feature also needs to be terminal-aware. Different terminals support
different image protocols, tmux can interfere with image rendering, and
some users will want pets disabled entirely or anchored differently
depending on their layout.

</td></tr>
</table>

## What Changed

- Add a TUI ambient pet renderer in `codex-rs/tui/src/pets/`.
- Port the app-style pet animation states so the sprite changes with
task status, waiting-for-input states, review/ready states, and
failures.
- Add `/pets` selection UI with a preview pane, loading state, built-in
pet choices, and a first-row `Disable terminal pets` option.
- Download built-in pet spritesheets on demand from the same public CDN
path already used by Android, under
`https://persistent.oaistatic.com/codex/pets/v1/...`, and cache them
locally under `~/.codex/cache/tui-pets/`.
- Keep custom pets local.
- Add config support for pet selection, disabling pets, and choosing
whether the pet follows the composer bottom or anchors to the terminal
bottom.
- Reserve layout space around the pet so transcript wrapping, live
responses, and composer input do not render underneath the sprite.
- Gate image rendering by terminal capability, disable image pets under
tmux, and support both Kitty Graphics and SIXEL terminals.
- Add redraw cleanup for terminal image artifacts, including sixel cell
clearing.

## Current Scope

- This is an initial TUI version of ambient pets, not full App parity.
- It focuses on ambient sprite rendering, `/pets` selection, custom
pets, terminal capability gating, and on-demand CDN-backed built-in
assets.
- The ambient text overlay is currently disabled, so the TUI renders the
pet sprite without extra status text beside it.

## How to Test

1. Start Codex TUI in a terminal with image support.
2. Run `/pets`.
3. Confirm the picker shows built-in pets plus custom pets, and the
first item is `Disable terminal pets`.
4. On a fresh `~/.codex/cache/tui-pets/`, move onto a built-in pet and
confirm the first preview downloads the spritesheet from the shared
Codex pets CDN and renders successfully.

54ef99a365 Disable empty Cargo test targets (#21584)
## Summary

`cargo test` has entails both running standard Rust tests and doctests.
It turns out that the doctest discovery is fairly slow, and it's a cost
you pay even for crates that don't include any doctests.

This PR disables doctests with `doctest = false` for crates that lack
any doctests.

For the collection of crates below, this speeds up test execution by
>4x.

E.g., before this PR:

```
Benchmark 1: cargo test     -p codex-utils-absolute-path     -p codex-utils-cache     -p codex-utils-cli     -p codex-utils-home-dir     -p codex-utils-output-truncation     -p codex-utils-path     -p codex-utils-string     -p codex-utils-template     -p codex-utils-elapsed     -p codex-utils-json-to-toml
  Time (mean ± σ):      1.849 s ±  4.455 s    [User: 0.752 s, System: 1.367 s]
  Range (min … max):    0.418 s … 14.529 s    10 runs
```

And after:

```
Benchmark 1: cargo test     -p codex-utils-absolute-path     -p codex-utils-cache     -p codex-utils-cli     -p codex-utils-home-dir     -p codex-utils-output-truncation     -p codex-utils-path     -p codex-utils-string     -p codex-utils-template     -p codex-utils-elapsed     -p codex-utils-json-to-toml
  Time (mean ± σ):     428.6 ms ±   6.9 ms    [User: 187.7 ms, System: 219.7 ms]
  Range (min … max):   418.0 ms … 436.8 ms    10 runs
```

For a single crate, with >2x speedup, before:

```
Benchmark 1: cargo test -p codex-utils-string
  Time (mean ± σ):     491.1 ms ±   9.0 ms    [User: 229.8 ms, System: 234.9 ms]
  Range (min … max):   480.9 ms … 512.0 ms    10 runs
```

And after:

```
Benchmark 1: cargo test -p codex-utils-string
  Time (mean ± σ):     213.9 ms ±   4.3 ms    [User: 112.8 ms, System: 84.0 ms]
  Range (min … max):   206.8 ms … 221.0 ms    13 runs
2004173cd7 Move message history out of core (#21278)
## Why
Message history was implemented inside `codex-core` and surfaced through
core protocol ops and `SessionConfiguredEvent` fields even though the
current consumer is TUI-local prompt recall. That made core own UI
history persistence and exposed `history_log_id` / `history_entry_count`
through surfaces that app-server and other clients do not need.
This change moves message history persistence out of core and keeps the
recall plumbing local to the TUI.
## What changed
- Added a new `codex-message-history` crate for appending, looking up,
trimming, and reading metadata from `history.jsonl`.
- Removed core protocol history ops/events: `AddToHistory`,
`GetHistoryEntryRequest`, and `GetHistoryEntryResponse`.
- Removed `history_log_id` and `history_entry_count` from
`SessionConfiguredEvent` and updated exec/MCP/test fixtures accordingly.
- Updated the TUI to dispatch local app events for message-history
append/lookup and keep its persistent-history metadata in TUI session
state.
## Validation
- `cargo test -p codex-message-history -p codex-protocol`
- `cargo test -p codex-exec event_processor_with_json_output`
- `cargo test -p codex-mcp-server outgoing_message`
- `cargo test -p codex-tui`
- `just fix -p codex-message-history -p codex-protocol -p codex-core -p
codex-tui -p codex-exec -p codex-mcp-server`
6784db51c0 Add /ide context support to the TUI (#20294)
## Why
Users have asked for a `/ide` command in the TUI so Codex can use the
active IDE session for live context such as the current file, open tabs,
and selected ranges. We already support a similar feature in the Codex
desktop app, so bringing it to the TUI makes sense.
One subtle compatibility constraint is that the injected prompt wrapper
and transcript stripping should match the desktop app and IDE extension.
By using the same `## My request for Codex:` delimiter and hiding the
injected context from transcript rendering the same way, threads created
in the TUI render correctly in desktop and IDE surfaces, and threads
created there replay correctly in the TUI, even when IDE context was
included.
Addresses https://github.com/openai/codex/issues/13834.
## What changed
### Summary
This PR consists of four four pieces:
1. An IPC client that uses a socket (Mac/Linux) or named pipe (Windows)
to talk to the IDE Extension
2. Logic that establishes the IPC connection and requests IDE context
(open files, selection) on demand
3. Logic that injects this context into the user prompt (using the same
technique as the desktop app) and hides the added context when rendering
the prompt in the TUI transcript
4. A new slash command for enabling/disabling this mode and text within
the footer to indicate when it's enabled
### Details
- Added `/ide [on|off|status]` to the TUI, with bare `/ide` toggling IDE
context on or off.
- Added a Rust IDE context client that connects to the local Codex IDE
IPC route as a client and requests context from the IDE extension flow.
- Injected IDE context using the same prompt delimiter and
transcript-stripping convention as the desktop app and IDE extension so
shared threads render consistently across surfaces.
- Added an `IDE context` status-line indicator while the feature is
active and cleared it when enabling or fetching context fails.
- Added handling for multiple selection ranges, oversized selections,
interleaved IPC messages, and transient reconnect timing after quick
toggles.
## Verification
Did extensive manual testing in addition to running automated unit and
regression tests.
To test:
- Launch VS Code (or Cursor) with the IDE extension.
- Open one or more files in the IDE and select a range of text within
one of them.
- Start the TUI.
- Ask the agent which files you have open in your IDE, and it should say
that it does not know.
- Enable `/ide` mode; note that `IDE context` appears in the lower
right.
- Ask the agent what files you have open in your IDE and what text is
selected.
31f8813e3e fix: show correct Bedrock runtime endpoint in /status (#20275)
## Why
`/status` was showing the configured `ModelProviderInfo.base_url` for
Amazon Bedrock, which can be stale or misleading because the actual
Bedrock Mantle endpoint is derived at runtime from the resolved AWS
region. This made sessions report the wrong provider endpoint even
though requests used the correct runtime URL.
## What changed
- Added `ModelProvider::runtime_base_url()` so provider implementations
can expose the request-time base URL through the shared runtime provider
abstraction.
- Moved Bedrock region-to-Mantle URL resolution into
`amazon_bedrock::mantle::runtime_base_url()`, keeping region resolution
private to the Mantle module.
- Overrode `runtime_base_url()` for Amazon Bedrock so it returns the
resolved Mantle endpoint instead of the configured default.
- Resolved and cached the runtime provider base URL during TUI startup,
then used that cached value when rendering `/status`.
- Added status coverage that verifies Bedrock displays the runtime URL
and ignores the configured Bedrock `base_url` when they differ.
## Verification
model provider is resolved correctly in local build:
164b6a0c78 Remove simple TUI legacy_core reexports (#18631)
## Problem
The TUI still imported path utilities and config-loader symbols through
app-server-client's legacy_core facade even though those APIs already
exist in utility/config crates. This is part of our ongoing effort to
whittle away at these old dependencies.
## Solution
Rewire imports to avoid the TUI directly importing from the core crate
and instead import from common lower-level crates. This PR doesn't
include any functional changes; it's just a simple rewiring.
87fc21ff60 TUI: remove simple legacy_core re-exports (#18605)
## Summary
The TUI still imported several symbols through the transitional
app-server-client `legacy_core` facade even though those symbols are
already owned by smaller crates. This PR narrows that facade by rewiring
those imports directly to their owner crates.
## Changes
No functional changes, just import rewiring. This is part of our ongoing
effort to whittle away at the `legacy_core` namespace, which represents
all of the remaining symbols that the TUI imports from the core.
9d1bf002c6 Significantly improve standalone installer (#17022)
## Summary
This PR significantly improves the standalone installer experience.
The main changes are:
1. We now install the codex binary and other dependencies in a
subdirectory under CODEX_HOME.
(`CODEX_HOME/packages/standalone/releases/...`)
2. We replace the `codex.js` launcher that npm/bun rely on with logic in
the Rust binary that automatically resolves its dependencies (like
ripgrep)
## Motivation
A few design constraints pushed this work.
1. Currently, the entrypoint to codex is through `codex.js`, which
forces a node dependency to kick off our rust app. We want to move away
from this so that the entrypoint to codex does not rely on node or
external package managers.
2. Right now, the native script adds codex and its dependencies directly
to user PATH. Given that codex is likely to add more binary dependencies
than ripgrep, we want a solution which does not add arbitrary binaries
to user PATH -- the only one we want to add is the `codex` command
itself.
3. We want upgrades to be atomic. We do not want scenarios where
interrupting an upgrade command can move codex into undefined state (for
example, having a new codex binary but an old ripgrep binary). This was
~possible with the old script.
4. Currently, the Rust binary uses heuristics to determine which
installer created it. These heuristics are flaky and are tied to the
`codex.js` launcher. We need a more stable/deterministic way to
determine how the binary was installed for standalone.
5. We do not want conflicting codex installations on PATH. For example,
the user installing via npm, then installing via brew, then installing
via standalone would make it unclear which version of codex is being
launched and make it tough for us to determine the right upgrade
command.
## Design
### Standalone package layout
Standalone installs now live under `CODEX_HOME/packages/standalone`:
```text
$CODEX_HOME/
  packages/
    standalone/
      current -> releases/0.111.0-x86_64-unknown-linux-musl
      releases/
        0.111.0-x86_64-unknown-linux-musl/
          codex
          codex-resources/
            rg
```
where `standalone/current` is a symlink to a release directory.
On Windows, the release directory has the same shape, with `.exe` names
and Windows helpers in `codex-resources`:
```text
%CODEX_HOME%\
  packages\
    standalone\
      current -> releases\0.111.0-x86_64-pc-windows-msvc
      releases\
        0.111.0-x86_64-pc-windows-msvc\
          codex.exe
          codex-resources\
            rg.exe
            codex-command-runner.exe
            codex-windows-sandbox-setup.exe
```
This gives us:
- atomic upgrades because we can fully stage a release before switching
`standalone/current`
- a stable way for the binary to recognize a standalone install from its
canonical `current_exe()` path under CODEX_HOME
- a clean place for binary dependencies like `rg`, Windows sandbox
helpers, and, in the future, our custom `zsh` etc
### Command location
On Unix, we add a symlink at `~/.local/bin/codex` which points directly
to the `$CODEX_HOME/packages/standalone/current/codex` binary. This
becomes the main entrypoint for the CLI.
On Windows, we store the link at
`%LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\OpenAI\Codex\bin`.
### PATH persistence
This is a tricky part of the PR, as there's no ~super reliable way to
ensure that we end up on PATH without significant tradeoffs.
Most Unix variants will have `~/.local/bin` on PATH already, which means
we *should* be fine simply registering the command there in most cases.
However, there are cases where this is not the case. In these cases, we
directly edit the profile depending on the shell we're in.
- macOS zsh: `~/.zprofile`
- macOS bash: `~/.bash_profile`
- Linux zsh: `~/.zshrc`
- Linux bash: `~/.bashrc`
- fallback: `~/.profile`
On Windows, we update the User `Path` environment variable directly and
we don't need to worry about shell profiles.
### Standalone runtime detection
This PR adds a new shared crate, `codex-install-context`, which computes
install ownership once per process and caches it in a `OnceLock`.
That context includes:
- install manager (`Standalone`, `Npm`, `Bun`, `Brew`, `Other`)
- the managed standalone release directory, when applicable
- the managed standalone `codex-resources` directory, when present
- the resolved `rg_command`
The standalone path is detected by canonicalizing `current_exe()`,
canonicalizing CODEX_HOME via `find_codex_home()`, and checking whether
the binary is running from under
`$CODEX_HOME/packages/standalone/releases`.
We intentionally do not use a release metadata file. The binary path is
the source of truth.
### Dependency resolution
For standalone installs, `grep_files` now resolves bundled `rg` from
`codex-resources` next to the Codex binary.
For npm/bun/brew/other installs, `grep_files` falls back to resolving
`rg` from PATH.
For Windows standalone installs, Windows sandbox helpers are still found
as direct siblings when present. If they are not direct siblings, the
lookup also checks the sibling `codex-resources` directory.
### TUI update path
The TUI now has `UpdateAction::StandaloneUnix` and
`UpdateAction::StandaloneWindows`, which rerun the standalone install
commands.
Unix update command:
```sh
sh -c "curl -fsSL https://chatgpt.com/codex/install.sh | sh"
```
Windows update command:
```powershell
powershell -c "irm https://chatgpt.com/codex/install.ps1|iex"
```
The Windows updater runs PowerShell directly. We do this because `cmd
/C` would parse the `|iex` as a cmd pipeline instead of passing it to
PowerShell.
## Additional installer behavior
- standalone installs now warn about conflicting npm/bun/brew-managed
`codex` installs and offer to uninstall them
- same-version reruns do not redownload the release if it is already
staged locally
## Testing
Installer smoke tests run:
- macOS: fresh install into isolated `HOME` and `CODEX_HOME` with
`scripts/install/install.sh --release latest`
- macOS: reran the installer against the same isolated install to verify
the same-version/update path and PATH block idempotence
- macOS: verified the installed `codex --version` and bundled
`codex-resources/rg --version`
- Windows: parsed `scripts/install/install.ps1` with PowerShell via
`[scriptblock]::Create(...)`
- Windows: verified the standalone update action builds a direct
PowerShell command and does not route the `irm ...|iex` command through
`cmd /C`
66e13efd9c TUI: enforce core boundary (#17399)
Problem: The TUI still depended on `codex-core` directly in a number of
places, and we had no enforcement from keeping this problem from getting
worse.
Solution: Route TUI core access through
`codex-app-server-client::legacy_core`, add CI enforcement for that
boundary, and re-export this legacy bridge inside the TUI as
`crate::legacy_core` so the remaining call sites stay readable. There is
no functional change in this PR — just changes to import targets.
Over time, we can whittle away at the remaining symbols in this legacy
namespace with the eventual goal of removing them all. In the meantime,
this linter rule will prevent us from inadvertently importing new
symbols from core.
6fff9955f1 extract models manager and related ownership from core (#16508)
## Summary
- split `models-manager` out of `core` and add `ModelsManagerConfig`
plus `Config::to_models_manager_config()` so model metadata paths stop
depending on `core::Config`
- move login-owned/auth-owned code out of `core` into `codex-login`,
move model provider config into `codex-model-provider-info`, move API
bridge mapping into `codex-api`, move protocol-owned types/impls into
`codex-protocol`, and move response debug helpers into a dedicated
`response-debug-context` crate
- move feedback tag emission into `codex-feedback`, relocate tests to
the crates that now own the code, and keep broad temporary re-exports so
this PR avoids a giant import-only rewrite
## Major moves and decisions
- created `codex-models-manager` as the owner for model
cache/catalog/config/model info logic, including the new
`ModelsManagerConfig` struct
- created `codex-model-provider-info` as the owner for provider config
parsing/defaults and kept temporary `codex-login`/`codex-core`
re-exports for old import paths
- moved `api_bridge` error mapping + `CoreAuthProvider` into
`codex-api`, while `codex-login::api_bridge` temporarily re-exports
those symbols and keeps the `auth_provider_from_auth` wrapper
- moved `auth_env_telemetry` and `provider_auth` ownership to
`codex-login`
- moved `CodexErr` ownership to `codex-protocol::error`, plus
`StreamOutput`, `bytes_to_string_smart`, and network policy helpers to
protocol-owned modules
- created `codex-response-debug-context` for
`extract_response_debug_context`, `telemetry_transport_error_message`,
and related response-debug plumbing instead of leaving that behavior in
`core`
- moved `FeedbackRequestTags`, `emit_feedback_request_tags`, and
`emit_feedback_request_tags_with_auth_env` to `codex-feedback`
- deferred removal of temporary re-exports and the mechanical import
rewrites to a stacked follow-up PR so this PR stays reviewable
## Test moves
- moved auth refresh coverage from `core/tests/suite/auth_refresh.rs` to
`login/tests/suite/auth_refresh.rs`
- moved text encoding coverage from
`core/tests/suite/text_encoding_fix.rs` to
`protocol/src/exec_output_tests.rs`
- moved model info override coverage from
`core/tests/suite/model_info_overrides.rs` to
`models-manager/src/model_info_overrides_tests.rs`
c1d18ceb6f [codex] Remove codex-core config type shim (#16529)
## Why
This finishes the config-type move out of `codex-core` by removing the
temporary compatibility shim in `codex_core::config::types`. Callers now
depend on `codex-config` directly, which keeps these config model types
owned by the config crate instead of re-expanding `codex-core` as a
transitive API surface.
## What Changed
- Removed the `codex-rs/core/src/config/types.rs` re-export shim and the
`core::config::ApprovalsReviewer` re-export.
- Updated `codex-core`, `codex-cli`, `codex-tui`, `codex-app-server`,
`codex-mcp-server`, and `codex-linux-sandbox` call sites to import
`codex_config::types` directly.
- Added explicit `codex-config` dependencies to downstream crates that
previously relied on the `codex-core` re-export.
- Regenerated `codex-rs/core/config.schema.json` after updating the
config docs path reference.
aa2403e2eb core: remove cross-crate re-exports from lib.rs (#16512)
## Why
`codex-core` was re-exporting APIs owned by sibling `codex-*` crates,
which made downstream crates depend on `codex-core` as a proxy module
instead of the actual owner crate.
Removing those forwards makes crate boundaries explicit and lets leaf
crates drop unnecessary `codex-core` dependencies. In this PR, this
reduces the dependency on `codex-core` to `codex-login` in the following
files:
```
codex-rs/backend-client/Cargo.toml
codex-rs/mcp-server/tests/common/Cargo.toml
```
## What
- Remove `codex-rs/core/src/lib.rs` re-exports for symbols owned by
`codex-login`, `codex-mcp`, `codex-rollout`, `codex-analytics`,
`codex-protocol`, `codex-shell-command`, `codex-sandboxing`,
`codex-tools`, and `codex-utils-path`.
- Delete the `default_client` forwarding shim in `codex-rs/core`.
- Update in-crate and downstream callsites to import directly from the
owning `codex-*` crate.
- Add direct Cargo dependencies where callsites now target the owner
crate, and remove `codex-core` from `codex-rs/backend-client`.
Michael Bolin
cc97982bbb core: use codex-mcp APIs directly (#16510)
## Why
`codex-mcp` already owns the shared MCP API surface, including `auth`,
`McpConfig`, `CODEX_APPS_MCP_SERVER_NAME`, and tool-name helpers in
[`codex-rs/codex-mcp/src/mcp/mod.rs`](f61e85dbfb/codex-rs/codex-mcp/src/mcp/mod.rs (L1-L35)).
Re-exporting that surface from `codex_core::mcp` gives downstream crates
two import paths for the same API and hides the real crate dependency.
This PR keeps `codex_core::mcp` focused on the local `McpManager`
wrapper in
[`codex-rs/core/src/mcp.rs`](f61e85dbfb/codex-rs/core/src/mcp.rs (L13-L40))
and makes consumers import shared MCP APIs from `codex_mcp` directly.
## What
- Remove the `codex_mcp::mcp` re-export surface from `core/src/mcp.rs`.
- Update `codex-core` internals plus `codex-app-server`, `codex-cli`,
and `codex-tui` test code to import MCP APIs from `codex_mcp::mcp`
directly.
- Add explicit `codex-mcp` dependencies where those crates now use that
API surface, and refresh `Cargo.lock`.
## Verification
- `just bazel-lock-check`
- `cargo test -p codex-core -p codex-cli -p codex-tui`
  - `codex-cli` passed.
- `codex-core` still fails five unrelated config tests in
`core/src/config/config_tests.rs` (`approvals_reviewer_*` and
`smart_approvals_alias_*`).
- A broader `cargo test -p codex-core -p codex-app-server -p codex-cli
4d4767f797 tui: remove the voice-input crate feature (#16467)
## Why
`voice-input` is the only remaining TUI crate feature, but it is also a
default feature and nothing in the workspace selects it explicitly. In
practice it is just acting as a proxy for platform support, which is
better expressed with target-specific dependencies and cfgs.
## What changed
- remove the `voice-input` feature from `codex-tui`
- make `cpal` a normal non-Linux target dependency
- replace the feature-based voice and audio cfgs with pure
Linux-vs-non-Linux cfgs
- shrink the workspace-manifest verifier allowlist to remove the
remaining `codex-tui` exception
## How tested
- `python3 .github/scripts/verify_cargo_workspace_manifests.py`
- `cargo test -p codex-tui`
- `just bazel-lock-check`
- `just argument-comment-lint -p codex-tui`
d1043ef90e tui: remove debug/test-only crate features (#16457)
## Why
The remaining `vt100-tests` and `debug-logs` features in `codex-tui`
were only gating test-only and debug-only behavior. Those feature
toggles add Cargo and Bazel permutations without buying anything, and
they make it easier for more crate features to linger in the workspace.
## What changed
- delete `vt100-tests` and `debug-logs` from `codex-tui`
- always compile the VT100 integration tests in the TUI test target
instead of hiding them behind a Cargo feature
- remove the unused textarea debug logging branch instead of replacing
it with another gate
- add the required argument-comment annotations in the VT100 tests now
that Bazel sees those callsites during linting
- shrink the manifest verifier allowlist again so only the remaining
real feature exceptions stay permitted
## How tested
- `cargo test -p codex-tui`
- `just argument-comment-lint -p codex-tui`
61429a6c10 Rename tui_app_server to tui (#16104)
This is a follow-up to https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/15922. That
previous PR deleted the old `tui` directory and left the new
`tui_app_server` directory in place. This PR renames `tui_app_server` to
`tui` and fixes up all references.
d65deec617 Remove the legacy TUI split (#15922)
This is the part 1 of 2 PRs that will delete the `tui` /
`tui_app_server` split. This part simply deletes the existing `tui`
directory and marks the `tui_app_server` feature flag as removed. I left
the `tui_app_server` feature flag in place for now so its presence
doesn't result in an error. It is simply ignored.
Part 2 will rename the `tui_app_server` directory `tui`. I did this as
two parts to reduce visible code churn.
8fa88fa8ca Add cached environment manager for exec server URL (#15785)
Add environment manager that is a singleton and is created early in
app-server (before skill manager, before config loading).
Use an environment variable to point to a running exec server.
0f957a93cd Move git utilities into a dedicated crate (#15564)
- create `codex-git-utils` and move the shared git helpers into it with
file moves preserved for diff readability
- move the `GitInfo` helpers out of `core` so stacked rollout work can
depend on the shared crate without carrying its own git info module
f7201e5a9f Initial plugins TUI menu - list and read only. tui + tui_app_server (#15215)
### Preliminary /plugins TUI menu
- Adds a preliminary /plugins menu flow in both tui and tui_app_server.
- Fetches plugin list data asynchronously and shows loading/error/cached
states.
  - Limits this first pass to the curated ChatGPT marketplace.
  - Shows available plugins with installed/status metadata.
- Supports in-menu search over plugin display name, plugin id, plugin
name, and marketplace label.
- Opens a plugin detail view on selection, including summaries for
Skills, Apps, and MCP Servers, with back navigation.
### Testing
  - Launch codex-cli with plugins enabled (`--enable plugins`).
  - Run /plugins and verify:
      - loading state appears first
      - plugin list is shown
      - search filters results
- selecting a plugin opens detail view, with a list of
skills/connectors/MCP servers for the plugin
      - back action returns to the list.
- Verify disabled behavior by running /plugins without plugins enabled
(shows “Plugins are disabled” message).
- Launch with `--enable tui_app_server` (and plugins enabled) and repeat
the same /plugins flow; behavior should match.
