d0cc662b8c Cache shell snapshots in the exec server (#39756)
## What changed

- Add the `shellSnapshotV2` executor capability and an optional shell snapshot request to `ExecParams`.
- Capture and restore Unix shell state and profile exports from an in-memory, attachment-scoped cache for `bash`, `zsh`, and `sh`.
- Apply environment policies, runtime `PATH` entries, sandbox context, and live managed-proxy settings when preparing restored commands.
- Bound snapshot size, capture time, scope length, and cache capacity, and fall back to the original command when capture fails.

## Testing

- Cover local, remote, TTY, sandboxed, and supported-shell execution, plus environment filtering, proxy handling, in-memory reuse, and capture failure fallback.

e3e5ad2847 Harden unsandboxed patch filesystem access (#39659)
## Why

An `apply_patch` path can be replaced with a symlink after verification, allowing an unsandboxed patch operation to reach a different file than the one that was approved.

## What changed

- Add `follow_symlinks` options to executor filesystem reads, writes, metadata lookups, directory creation, and removal, including the corresponding `followSymlinks` protocol fields.
- Implement no-follow filesystem operations on Unix and Windows that reject links in any path component and restrict file access to regular files.
- Run `apply_patch` with symlink traversal disabled when an otherwise-required sandbox is bypassed, while retaining the existing follow-symlink default for standalone callers.

## Testing

- Cover leaf and ancestor symlinks across patch add, update, delete, and move operations, including a path swap after verification.
- Exercise local and remote no-follow filesystem behavior, concurrent directory creation, special-file rejection, and Windows reparse points.

77e6889601 Add exec-server forwarding mode (#39249)
## What changed

- Add `codex exec-server forward --connect ws://HOST:PORT` to register an
  existing WebSocket exec-server as a remote environment.
- Open a separate destination WebSocket for each authenticated Noise relay
  stream and forward complete payloads unchanged in both directions.
- Preserve large messages through WebSocket fragmentation and coordinate
  disconnects, close acknowledgements, and pending output delivery.

## Testing

- Cover CLI validation, opaque payload forwarding, disconnect handling, and
  destination close behavior.
- Verify commands and large file transfers through the complete relay and
  forwarding path.

b5ea64a203 Add a symlink-safe reader for sensitive files (#39200)
## What changed

- Export `read_sensitive_file_to_string` from `codex-exec-server`.
- Require the opened path to be a regular disk file and avoid following its
  final symlink component on Unix or reparse point on Windows.
- Read valid UTF-8 file contents asynchronously and return I/O errors for
  unsupported inputs.

## Testing

Add tests covering regular files, directories, and symlinks.

89e297729e Prevent Noise auth tokens from reaching child processes (#38941)
## Why

`CODEX_EXEC_SERVER_NOISE_AUTH_TOKEN` is an execution-server credential and
must not be exposed to model-reachable commands or command hooks, including
when shell environment policy explicitly sets a case variant of the name.

## What changed

- Add `CODEX_EXEC_SERVER_NOISE_AUTH_TOKEN` to the shared list of
  non-inheritable environment variables.
- Keep the environment variable constant in `codex-protocol` so the exec
  server and environment scrubber use the same definition.
- Verify case-insensitive removal after policy overrides for shell commands
  and command hooks.

c30a3e49c9 Support sandboxed file streaming in exec-server (#38356)
## Why

Streaming reads previously rejected requests that used a platform filesystem
sandbox.

## What changed

- Open streamed files in the sandbox helper and return the open file to the
  exec-server by passing a file descriptor on Unix or duplicating a file handle
  on Windows.
- Advertise support through the `sandboxedFileStreaming` environment capability.
- Preserve close-on-exec behavior for transferred descriptors, including the
  required inherited-descriptor cleanup on macOS.

## Testing

- Cover bounded sandboxed streams, continued reads after path replacement, and
  rejection of symlink escapes outside readable roots.

eeae88d8a6 Add opt-in concurrent exec-server request dispatch (#36987)
## Why

Sequential dispatch lets a long-running request block unrelated health checks
and cleanup on the same connection.

## What changed

- Add `--concurrent-requests <COUNT>` for local and remote exec-server
  connections, while retaining sequential dispatch when the option is omitted
  or set to `1`.
- Preserve handshake ordering before enabling concurrent dispatch.
- Reserve separate capacity for status, signal, terminate, and close requests so
  they remain responsive when ordinary request capacity is saturated.
- Drain queued client responses during disconnect and cancel outstanding
  request tasks during connection shutdown.

## Testing

- Cover CLI parsing and concurrency-limit validation.
- Verify default sequential behavior, pipelined handshake ordering, concurrent
  request progress, control-request responsiveness, and disconnect handling.

166658a34a Tie remote exec servers to their parent stdin (#35843)

- Add `--exit-on-stdin-close` and the `CODEX_EXEC_SERVER_EXIT_ON_STDIN_CLOSE` environment variable as opt-in controls for remote exec servers.
- Gracefully drain active sessions and processes when the parent closes stdin, then flush telemetry before exiting.
- Remove the parent-lifetime environment variable from child process environments.

09241ae4db Decouple exec-server HTTP from reqwest types (#35059)

- Rename `ReqwestHttpClient` to `RouteAwareHttpClient` to reflect that delegated HTTP uses Codex's shared route-aware transport.

265cd2e100 Initialize execution environments with the final HTTP policy (#34995)
## Why

The TUI must inspect the default execution environment before loading its final
configuration. Initializing the environment manager at that point can give
startup services the bootstrap HTTP policy instead of the effective policy after
managed requirements are applied.

## What changed

- Split environment discovery from manager construction so callers can inspect
  the default environment without starting remote connections.
- Build the environment manager after final configuration loading and pass its
  resolved `HttpClientFactory` through all construction paths.
- Add shared test support for managers that use the legacy default HTTP policy.

## Testing

- Cover connection-free environment discovery and explicit HTTP policy
  propagation.
- Verify TUI startup services use the final managed `respect_system_proxy` value.

- Let `exec-server` issue JSON-RPC requests to its client and correlate responses, with bounded concurrency, timeouts, and connection cleanup.
- When `request_policy_decisions` is enabled, forward proxy policy requests with the process ID and network destination, then apply the client's allow, deny, or ask decision.
- Fail closed for invalid inputs, unavailable or malformed responses, timeouts, process shutdown, and disconnects. Keep callbacks active while inherited process streams keep the proxy alive.

## Testing

- Cover response correlation, request limits, timeouts, disconnect cleanup, validation boundaries, decision forwarding, and process lifecycle behavior.

4f1992732c Preserve custom arg0 for sandboxed exec-server processes (#34497)
## Why

Sandbox wrappers replaced the process launch command and did not carry an
`ExecParams.arg0` override through to the inner process.

## What changed

- Route sandboxed Unix launches with a custom `arg0` through a helper mode that
  re-execs the requested program with the override.
- Expose the helper executable to the filesystem sandbox and dispatch its mode
  from Codex and exec-server test binaries.

## Testing

Add coverage for the prepared sandbox command and an end-to-end remote process
that verifies both the custom `arg0` and filesystem restrictions.

9f6c29e281 Launch managed network proxies on remote executors (#33906)
## Why

Remote executions need managed-network proxy listeners in the executor so their
loopback proxy addresses are reachable by the launched process.

## What changed

- Add a capability-gated exec-server protocol field for executor-local proxy
  launch configuration, including network policy, audit metadata, and execution
  attribution.
- Start the proxy while preparing a remote process, replace inherited proxy
  environment variables with its local addresses, and derive the sandbox
  context from its listeners.
- Keep the proxy alive until inherited output streams close, then shut it down.
- Reject unsupported remote settings such as MITM and credential injection.

## Testing

- Cover configuration round trips and rejection of unsupported settings.
- Verify executor-local startup, blocked-domain enforcement, protocol
  compatibility, and proxy lifetime through process closure.

08e30a2e4e Add batched executor capability discovery (#33852)
## Why

Selected capability roots can contribute plugins, MCP servers, connectors, and
skills. Discovering each contribution separately requires repeated access to the
executor filesystem.

## What changed

- Add the `capabilityRoots/discoverV1` exec-server RPC to scan selected roots and
  materialize recognized plugin manifests, configuration files, skill
  instructions, and skill metadata in one bounded request.
- Add the opt-in `executor_capability_discovery` feature, with a thread-scoped
  cache and per-step snapshot shared by MCP and skill discovery.
- Parse MCP, connector, and skill contributions from the materialized snapshot,
  including serving cached skill instructions without another filesystem read.

## Testing

- Cover discovery limits, manifest precedence, root-local failures, cache reuse,
  plugin contributions, and parity with the existing environment skill loader.

4472698728 Support pending remote environment registration (#32231)
## Why

Remote environment provisioning can finish after a thread starts, before an
exec-server WebSocket URL is available.

## What changed

- Add `EnvironmentManager::register_pending_environment` and a one-shot
  `PendingEnvironmentRegistration` handle that resolves to either a validated
  WebSocket URL or a terminal provisioning error.
- Let lazy remote exec-server clients wait for that result, while preserving
  reconnection behavior after a successful registration.
- Keep replacement registrations isolated so completing an older handle does
  not resolve the current environment with the same ID.

## Testing

Add coverage for successful connection and reconnection, provisioning and
dropped-registration failures, invalid URLs, replacement isolation, and the
deferred-executor startup flow.

13ba8058f2 Resolve selected capability roots without starting executors (#31581)
## Why

A thread can select skill roots that live in an executor environment.
`skills/list` needs a passive snapshot of the roots that are usable now:
it must not start an executor, wait for recovery, or reconnect a failed
environment.

The initial implementation checked the immutable first startup result.
After a successful connection later entered recovery or failed, that
result still looked successful. A read-only catalog request could then
wait for recovery or trigger a new connection while reading the
filesystem.

## What

- inspect readiness from the current exec-server connection state
- return roots only while their environment can serve a request
immediately
- omit environments that have not started, are connecting, or are
recovering
- return warnings for missing environments and terminal connection
failures
- add a fail-fast filesystem view that never starts, waits for, or
reconnects an environment
- expose the passive selected-root snapshot through `CodexThread`

## Behavior

- Local and currently connected environments are ready.
- Starting and recovering environments are omitted without a warning so
callers can retry later.
- Missing and terminally failed environments are omitted with a warning.
- A disconnect between readiness inspection and filesystem access fails
promptly instead of crossing into the normal recovery path.
- Normal model-turn and execution paths keep their existing reconnect
behavior.

## Design

The recovery policy is private to the exec-server client. Callers choose
the explicit fail-fast filesystem method; the existing client and
filesystem APIs remain reconnecting. This keeps the passive contract at
the transport boundary instead of plumbing timeout or retry flags
through the skills stack.

## Coverage

- a lazy stdio environment stays unstarted during passive inspection
- missing and terminally failed environments surface warnings
- a real websocket disconnect proves current readiness drops, a
previously acquired fail-fast filesystem handle returns promptly, and
readiness returns after recovery

## Scope

This PR only provides passive readiness and fail-fast filesystem
primitives. It does not add app-server API fields or notifications.

## Stack

- #31582 uses these primitives for experimental thread-scoped
`skills/list`.
- #30228 adds targeted invalidation notifications.

042e61726d [codex] bound Rendezvous WebSocket liveness (#30643)
## Summary

- require a Pong within 60 seconds for established Noise Rendezvous
WebSockets on both the harness and executor
- bound steady-state WebSocket writes and harness event delivery so
backpressure cannot mask the deadline
- classify executor disconnects with bounded reasons and feed them into
the existing reconnect metric and structured log
- cover silent peers, responsive peers, continuous non-Pong traffic, and
local application backpressure

## Why

The existing periodic Pings did not track Pongs, so a half-open or
blackholed connection could remain stuck until the operating system's
TCP timeout. This adds the smallest explicit liveness contract without
new spans, RTT histograms, feature flags, or TCP diagnostics.

## Testing

- `just test -p codex-exec-server` on devbox `richard-6` — 300 passed, 2
skipped
- `just fix -p codex-exec-server`
- `just fmt`
- independent correctness, performance/security, and YAGNI reviews — no
findings

2dec46e30a [codex] Record exec-server lifecycle metrics (#27467)
## Summary

- Record bounded connection, request, and process lifecycle metrics.
- Report active gauges from callbacks on every collection, including
delta exports.
- Serialize active-count updates so concurrent starts and finishes
cannot publish stale values.
- Serialize process exit, explicit termination, and shutdown through the
process registry so exactly one completion result wins.
- Keep the implementation small with single-owner RAII guards and one
real OTLP/HTTP integration test using the existing `wiremock`
dependency.

## Root cause

Process exit and session shutdown previously used cloned completion
state. That avoided duplicate emission, but it duplicated lifecycle
ownership and made the ordering harder to reason about. The process
registry mutex already defines the lifecycle ordering, so the final
implementation stores the metric guard and termination flag directly on
the process entry. Whichever path claims the entry first owns the
completion result.

Production metric export uses delta temporality. Event-only synchronous
gauge recordings disappear after the next collection when no count
changes, so active counts now use observable callbacks that report
current state on every collection.

The cleanup also removes the constant `result="accepted"` connection
tag, redundant route and response assertions, a custom HTTP collector,
and fallback initialization machinery that did not add behavior.

## Stack

8f02973d25 Persist selected capability roots and resolve availability per model step (#29856)
## Why

`selectedCapabilityRoots` is durable thread intent: “use this capability
root from environment `worker`.”

The important product assumption is:

> One environment ID always names the same logical executor and stable
contents.

`worker` does not silently change from executor A to an unrelated
executor B. The process-local connection handle for `worker` can still
be replaced while Codex is running, though, for example when
`environment/add` registers a fresh handle for the same logical
environment.

The thread should persist only the stable selection. Each model step
should pair that selection with the exact ready handle captured for that
step.

## The boundary

The environment ID is the stable identity and cache key. The
`Arc<Environment>` is only a process-local handle retained so consumers
of one model step use the same captured environment. It is never
persisted and it does not imply different environment contents.

## What changes

### Persist the stable selection

Selected roots are written into `SessionMeta` and restored with the
thread. Forked subagents inherit the same selections, including
bounded-history forks.

Only stable data is persisted: root ID, environment ID, and root path.

### Capture readiness together with the exact handle

The environment snapshot records:

This prevents readiness and execution from coming from different
registry snapshots.

For example:

Without carrying handle A in the snapshot, the resolver could combine “A
was ready” with handle B and treat B as ready before it had finished
starting.

This does not change cache invalidation. Stable capability metadata
remains identified by environment ID and capability root. Replacing a
process-local handle under the same stable environment ID does not
invalidate or rediscover that metadata.

### Resolve availability per model step

- A ready captured environment produces resolved roots using its
captured handle.
- A starting, missing, or failed environment is omitted from that step.
- A selected lazy environment that is outside the turn's captured
environment set is asked to start, and a later step can observe it as
ready.
- No capability files are scanned here.

Transient transport disconnects remain the remote client's reconnect

#28522 routes selected-plugin HTTP MCP traffic through the owning
executor, but OAuth bootstrap and refresh still used host-local clients.
Executor-only servers therefore cannot complete discovery or login
through the same network boundary as the MCP connection.

- adapt `codex_exec_server::HttpClient` to RMCP 1.8's `OAuthHttpClient`
contract
- let RMCP own discovery, dynamic registration, PKCE, token exchange,

c14623d04c Add a bounded filesystem walk RPC (#29841)
Stack 1 of 3. Follow-ups: #29842 and #29844.

## What changes

Adds a general bounded `fs/walk` operation to the exec server.

The operation returns file and directory entries plus recoverable
per-path errors. It skips symlinks, preserves the existing filesystem
sandbox routing, and enforces depth, directory, entry, and response-size
limits.

This PR only defines and wires the filesystem operation. It does not
change any callers yet.

283bc4cf01 test: add app-server auto environment helper (#29746)
## Why

Start moving towards app-server tests defaulting to running against
remote & foreign OS executors. To do so we need a point of indirection
similar to core integration tests' `build_with_auto_env`, but with the
flexibility of letting tests control environment registration if they
need to.

## What

This adds:

- `TestAppServer::new_with_auto_env()` for constructing an app server
with a default environment defined by the test runner (e.g. bazel)
- `TestAppServer::auto_env_params()` for tests to easily acquire turn
env params tailored to the automatic environment
- `TestAppServer::send_thread_start_request_with_auto_env()` to make it
easy for tests to start a thread using the automatic environment

The above methods all fail if the test calling them has set up an
environment where the automatic environment configuration conflicts with
test-created state.

## Validation

Adds a couple of basic smoke tests to the app-server test suite.
Follow-ups will migrate more tests to use it.

## Why

The app-server and exec-server expose separate JSON-RPC APIs, but
exec-server currently sources its serialized protocol and envelope types
through app-server-oriented code. Giving each API an explicit owner
makes the crate boundary legible without introducing shared generic
envelopes.

## What changed

- Added `codex-exec-server-protocol` to own exec DTOs, process IDs, and
JSON-RPC envelopes.
- Updated exec-server clients, transports, handlers, and tests to use
the new crate.
- Exposed app-server's existing JSON-RPC types through a public `rpc`
module while retaining root re-exports.
- Preserved existing wire shapes, including exec `PathUri` behavior.

9c3b10e5d4 Apply sandbox intent inside remote exec servers (#29113)
## Why

PR #29108 lets the orchestrator send sandbox intent with `process/start`
without wrapping the command for its own operating system.

This PR completes that boundary by making the executor interpret and
enforce the intent using its own filesystem paths and sandbox
implementation.

For example, a macOS TUI targeting a Linux devbox sends `/bin/bash -lc
pwd`. The Linux executor turns that into its own `codex-linux-sandbox
... /bin/bash -lc pwd` launch.

## What changes

- Keep `process/start` unchanged when no sandbox intent is present.
- Convert sandbox `PathUri` values into native paths on the executor.
- Bind symbolic `:workspace_roots` permissions to the executor's native
sandbox cwd.
- Select the sandbox implementation on the executor and wrap the
original command immediately before spawning it.
- Reject sandbox-required execution before spawning when the executor
cannot enforce the intent.
- Pass exec-server runtime paths into process creation so Linux can
locate `codex-linux-sandbox`.

The boundary is therefore:

This PR intentionally treats a denied remote command as an ordinary
command failure. Draft follow-up #29424 carries a semantic
`sandboxDenied` result back to unified exec for the existing approval
and retry flow.

## Platform scope

Linux and macOS use their existing direct-spawn sandbox transforms.

Windows sandboxed remote process launch is intentionally unsupported in
this PR. The current Windows direct-spawn wrapper does not correctly
preserve arbitrary argv, TTY behavior, or pass the full child
environment out of band. The executor rejects the request instead of
running it incorrectly or unsandboxed.

## Known follow-ups

- The transported permission profile can still contain
orchestrator-materialized helper or explicit paths. A `TODO(jif)` marks
where the executor boundary should receive pre-host-materialization
permission intent.
- The sandbox wrapper currently replaces a requested custom inner
`arg0`. A `TODO(jif)` marks where this must be preserved or rejected
explicitly.
- Draft PR #29424 contains the deferred sandbox-denial classification
and approval/retry behavior.

## Rollout assumption

This executor-sandbox stack is unreleased and its client and executor
are expected to move together. This PR does not add mixed-version
negotiation with older exec servers.

Codex can run a remote exec server through the Noise relay, but the
normal
environment-manager path could not establish an
environment-registry-backed
harness connection. Signed rendezvous URLs and harness authorizations

short-lived, so reconnects must fetch a fresh bundle instead of
retaining
stale connection credentials. A stalled registry request must also fail
within
the regular remote connection deadline, without exposing these
credentials in
debug logs.

Issue: N/A (internal environment-service integration).

a0586ad12d exec-server: expose environment registry payloads (#28651)
## Why

Services that proxy the exec-server environment registry endpoints need
to deserialize and forward the same Noise registration and harness-key
validation payloads. Those wire models currently live as private,
serialize-only structs in `exec-server`, which forces consumers to
duplicate the contract.

## What changed

- Add owned serde models for registration and harness-key validation
requests and responses.
- Use those models in the existing exec-server registry client.
- Re-export the models from `codex-exec-server` and `codex-core-api`.
- Keep the harness authorization request free of a derived `Debug`
implementation so it is not accidentally logged.

## Testing

- Focused exec-server registration and harness-key validation tests: 2
passed.
- `cargo check -p codex-core-api`

The full `codex-exec-server` suite compiled and ran 254 tests: 222
passed, while 32 existing filesystem sandbox tests could not run under
the nested macOS sandbox (`sandbox_apply: Operation not permitted`).

a4711b88dd [codex] exec-server: stream files in chunks (#28354)
## Why

`fs/readFile` buffers the entire file in one response, which makes large
remote reads expensive and prevents callers from applying backpressure.
We need an opt-in streaming path with bounded block sizes while
preserving the existing single-call API for small and sandboxed reads.

## What changed

- Add `ExecServerClient::stream`, returning a named `FileReadStream`
that implements `futures::Stream` and yields immutable 1 MiB byte
blocks.
- Add internal `fs/open`, `fs/readBlock`, and `fs/close` RPCs.
`fs/readBlock` accepts an explicit offset and length.
- Keep unsandboxed files open between block reads, cap open handles per
connection, and clean them up on EOF, error, stream drop, explicit
close, or connection shutdown.
- Reject platform-sandboxed streaming opens instead of turning the
one-shot sandbox helper into a persistent server. Existing `fs/readFile`
behavior is unchanged.

## Testing

- `just test -p codex-exec-server`
- Integration coverage for 1 MiB chunking, exact block-boundary EOF,
sandbox rejection, and continued reads from the opened file after path
replacement.
- Handle-manager coverage for non-sequential offsets, variable block

Rendezvous forwards traffic between the orchestrator and exec-server.
The endpoints need to authenticate each other and encrypt that traffic
without trusting Rendezvous with plaintext or endpoint keys.

## Changes

- Adds a hybrid Noise IK channel through Clatter using X25519,
ML-KEM-768, AES-256-GCM, and SHA-256.
- Binds each handshake to `environment_id`, `executor_registration_id`,
and `stream_id`.
- Pins the registry-provided executor key and carries the harness
authorization inside the encrypted handshake.
- Orders relay frames before consuming Noise nonces and fragments large
JSON-RPC messages into bounded records.
- Bounds handshake payloads, frames, streams, and message reassembly.

## Why

First-party async traits should expose their `Send` contracts explicitly
without requiring `async_trait`. This completes the migration pattern
established in #27303 and #27304.

## What changed

- Replaced the remaining first-party `async_trait` traits with native
return-position `impl Future + Send` where statically dispatched and
explicit boxed `Send` futures where object safety is required.
- Kept implementations behavior-preserving, outlining existing async
bodies into inherent methods where that keeps the diff reviewable.
- Removed all direct first-party `async-trait` dependencies and the
workspace dependency declaration.
- Added a cargo-deny policy that permits `async-trait` only through the
remaining transitive wrapper crates.
- Updated `rand` from 0.8.5 to 0.8.6 to resolve RUSTSEC-2026-0097 and
keep the full cargo-deny check passing.

## Summary

Path composition is already handled by `PathUri`, leaving `fs/join` and
`fs/parent` as redundant exec-server protocol surface. Because
app-server and exec-server are deployed atomically, these obsolete
methods can be removed without a compatibility shim.

This removes the protocol constants and payloads, public client APIs,
server registrations and handlers, and endpoint-only tests. Existing
in-process `PathUri` join/parent coverage remains.

f2969f36e8 [codex] Handle Ctrl-C for non-TTY unified exec (#26734)
## Why

A long-running unified exec process started with `tty: false` could not
be interrupted via `write_stdin`: ordinary non-TTY stdin writes are
rejected once stdin is closed, but an exact U+0003 payload should still
map to a process interrupt. The interrupt should flow through the same
process lifecycle path as a real signal so Codex preserves
process-reported output and exit metadata instead of fabricating a
Ctrl-C exit code or tearing down the session early.

## What Changed

- Add `process/signal` to exec-server with `ProcessSignal::Interrupt`
and an empty response.
- Add a non-consuming `ProcessHandle::signal` path for spawned
processes; on Unix it sends SIGINT to the process group and leaves
terminate/hard-kill unchanged.
- Route non-TTY U+0003 `write_stdin` through `process.signal(...)`
instead of `terminate`, then let the normal post-write collection path
drain output and observe exit.
- Add exec-server coverage where a shell `trap INT` handler prints the

b200dd1b6f exec-server: support auth-backed remote executor registration (#22769)
This updates remote `exec-server` registration to use normal Codex auth
instead of a registry-issued credential. The registry request is built
from the existing auth-provider path, which preserves the biscuit-only
registry contract introduced in
[openai/openai#924101](https://github.com/openai/openai/pull/924101)
while removing the old remote registry bearer env var and its direct
transport assumptions.

The default remote flow uses persisted ChatGPT auth from the normal
Codex config/storage path. This PR also includes the containerized Agent
Identity path needed by
[openai/openai#924260](https://github.com/openai/openai/pull/924260):
remote `exec-server` accepts `--allow-agent-identity-auth`, permits
Agent Identity auth loaded from `CODEX_ACCESS_TOKEN` only when that flag
is present, and reuses the existing Agent task registration plus derived
`AgentAssertion` header generation. API-key auth remains unsupported,
and Agent Identity stays opt-in.

Validation performed beyond normal presubmit coverage:
- `cargo fmt --all --check`
- `cargo check -p codex-cli`
- `cargo test -p codex-exec-server`
- `cargo test -p codex-cli exec_server_agent_identity_auth_flag_`
- `cargo test -p codex-cli remote_exec_server_auth_mode_`

I also attempted `cargo test -p codex-cli`. The new CLI tests passed
inside that run, but the suite ended on an unrelated local

ac466c0dbd feat(exec-server): use protobuf relay frames (#22343)
## Why

Remote exec-server now needs one executor websocket to serve multiple
harness JSON-RPC sessions. Rendezvous routes by `stream_id`, and the
exec-server side needs to use the same stable relay frame contract
instead of a hand-rolled JSON shape.

The relay protocol also needs to make ownership boundaries clear:
harness and executor endpoints own sequencing, acks, retries, duplicate
suppression, segmentation, and reassembly; rendezvous only routes
frames.

## What Changed

- Add the checked-in `codex.exec_server.relay.v1.RelayMessageFrame`
proto plus generated prost bindings for `codex-exec-server`.
- Encode remote harness/executor relay traffic as binary protobuf
websocket frames while keeping local websocket JSON-RPC unchanged.
- Demux executor-side relay streams into independent
`ConnectionProcessor` sessions keyed by `stream_id`.
- Add a programmatic `RemoteExecutorConfig::with_bearer_token(...)`
constructor for non-CLI callers and integration tests.

registry/rendezvous websocket and verifies two virtual streams share one

5f2543b74e Load configured environments from CODEX_HOME (#20667)
## Why

The earlier PRs add stdio transport support and the config-backed
environment provider, but the feature remains inert until normal Codex
entrypoints construct `EnvironmentManager` with enough context to
discover `CODEX_HOME/environments.toml`. This final stack PR activates
the provider while preserving the legacy `CODEX_EXEC_SERVER_URL`
fallback when no environments file exists.

**Stack position:** this is PR 5 of 5. It is the product wiring PR that
activates the configured environment provider added in PR 4.

## What Changed

- Thread `codex_home` into `EnvironmentManagerArgs`.
- Change `EnvironmentManager::new(...)` to load the provider from
`CODEX_HOME`.
- Preserve legacy behavior by falling back to
`DefaultEnvironmentProvider::from_env()` when `environments.toml` is
absent.
- Make `environments.toml`-backed managers start new threads with all
configured environments, default first, while keeping the legacy env-var
path single-default.
- Update the app-server, TUI, exec, MCP server, connector, prompt-debug,
and thread-manager-sample callsites to pass `codex_home` and handle

## Self-Review Notes

- The multi-environment startup path is intentionally tied to the
`environments.toml` provider. Using `>1` configured environment as the
only signal would also expand the legacy `CODEX_EXEC_SERVER_URL`
provider because it keeps `local` addressable alongside `remote`.
- The startup environment list is still derived inside
`EnvironmentManager`; the provider only says whether its snapshot should
start new threads with all configured environments.
- The thread-manager sample was updated to pass the current
`ThreadManager::new(...)` installation id argument so the stack compiles
under Bazel.

- Add `environment_toml.rs` as the TOML-specific home for parsing,
validation, and provider construction.
- Keep the TOML schema/provider structs private; the public constructor
added here is `EnvironmentManager::from_codex_home(...)`.
- Add `TomlEnvironmentProvider`, including validation for:
  - reserved ids such as `local` and `none`
  - duplicate ids
  - unknown explicit defaults
  - empty programs or URLs
  - exactly one of `url` or `program` per configured environment

a3de5bde6e Add stdio exec-server client transport (#20664)
## Why

Configured environments need to connect to exec-server instances that
are not necessarily already listening on a websocket URL. A
command-backed stdio transport lets Codex start an exec-server process,
speak JSON-RPC over its stdio streams, and clean up that child process
with the client lifetime.

**Stack position:** this is PR 2 of 5. It builds on the server-side
stdio listener from PR 1 and provides the client transport used by later
environment/config PRs.

## What Changed

- Add `ExecServerTransport` variants for websocket URLs and stdio shell
commands.
- Add stdio command connection support for `ExecServerClient`.
- Move websocket/stdio transport setup into `client_transport.rs` so
`client.rs` stays focused on shared JSON-RPC client, session, HTTP, and
notification behavior.
- Tie stdio child process cleanup to the JSON-RPC connection lifetime
with a RAII lifetime guard.
- Keep existing websocket environment behavior by adapting URL-backed
remotes to `ExecServerTransport::WebSocketUrl`.

d0f9d5eba2 Add cloud executor registration to exec-server (#19575)
## Summary
This PR adds the first `codex-rs` milestone for remote-exec e2e: a local
`codex exec-server` can now register itself with
`codex-cloud-environments` and attach to the returned rendezvous
websocket.

At a high level, `codex exec-server --cloud ...` now:
- loads ChatGPT auth from normal Codex config
- registers an executor with `codex-cloud-environments`
- receives a signed rendezvous websocket URL
- serves the existing exec-server JSON-RPC protocol over that websocket

## What Changed
- Added `--cloud`, `--cloud-base-url`, `--cloud-environment-id`, and
`--cloud-name` to `codex exec-server`
- Added a new `exec-server/src/cloud.rs` module that handles:
  - registration requests
  - auth/header setup
  - bounded auth retry on `401/403`
  - reconnect/backoff after websocket disconnects
- Reused the existing `ConnectionProcessor` / `ExecServerHandler` path
so cloud mode serves the same exec/filesystem RPC surface as local
websocket mode
- Added cloud-specific error variants and minimal docs for the new mode

## Testing
Manual e2e test that fully goes through exec server flow with our codex
cloud agent as orchestrator
