pakrym-oai 6326163b9a Send incremental tool catalog updates in Responses Lite (#50540)
## What changed

When `IncrementalTools` is enabled for Responses Lite, track tool definitions in world state and conversation history. Send the initial catalog once, then append only added or changed definitions while preserving earlier request history. Emit developer notices for removed tools and namespace instruction changes.

Use history-supplied definitions for normal requests and remote compaction, and omit empty `additional_tools` prefixes. Keep the existing tool delivery behavior for the Responses API and when the feature is disabled.

## Testing

Add unit and snapshot coverage for catalog and namespace transitions, empty catalogs, and stable hashing across JSON object key order. Add a request-history scenario covering unchanged tools, a model switch that changes one definition, persisted catalog hashes, and Responses API behavior.

ningyi-oai 87d3e06847 Preserve live tool-call metadata across request windows (#49401)
## Why

Persistence and aggregate metadata budgets can omit tool-call observations that are still relevant to the current request, including tool result metadata needed during compaction.

## What changed

- Retain live direct-call observations separately from bounded persisted outputs, keyed by response item ID so reused call IDs cannot mix results.
- Restore those observations for sampling and compaction, pruning them only when sampling confirms they have left the history window. Preserve observations across shortened compaction retries.
- Remove aggregate prompt metadata caps while retaining per-call argument limits and the outgoing message size limit. Invalidate cell completeness when argument normalization truncates a recorded call.

## Testing

Add regression coverage for exhausted persistence budgets, reused call IDs and reversed completion order, shortened compaction retries, and completeness after argument truncation. Extend integration coverage for large Code Mode metadata, provider metadata support, and fork/resume behavior.

pakrym-oai 12de0e395d Preserve WebSocket continuations when steering a turn (#48508)
## Why

Steering an active WebSocket response previously dropped the connection and
resent the full history. Draining the response preserves the connection and
allows the follow-up request to continue with `previous_response_id`.

## What changed

- Drain WebSocket responses when steering. For models using
  `use_responses_lite`, first send `response.interrupt` with
`mode: "discard_partial_items"` once the response ID is available.
- Treat `response.incomplete` with reason `interrupted` as completion with
`end_turn: false`, preserving token usage and allowing the turn to continue.
  Other incomplete reasons remain errors.

## Testing

Update the steering integration test to cover completed and discarded reasoning
items, asserting connection reuse, incremental follow-up input, and token usage
from the interrupted response.

peilin-openai c9e2520707 Preserve tool metadata for OpenAI provider endpoint overrides (#48344)
## Why

Destination-only filtering stripped raw tool result metadata and MCP attribution when the built-in OpenAI provider used a custom endpoint.

## What changed

Add a runtime-only `include_internal_metadata` grant to `ModelProviderInfo` and enable it for the built-in OpenAI provider. Apply the provider grant or the existing first-party HTTPS destination check to both HTTP and WebSocket Responses requests.

Keep the grant out of serialized configuration and schemas, and default it to false for providers received through remote configuration. Providers without the grant retain the existing destination filtering.

## Testing

Update HTTP and WebSocket tests to expect metadata at overridden OpenAI endpoints. Cover provider grants, destination filtering, MCP attribution on requests, and the grant's exclusion from TOML serialization and configuration.

ningyi-oai dbb875d23c Bound tool-call observations to the outgoing Responses message budget (#47957)
## Why

Removing tool-result metadata alone can leave requests above the 15 MiB message budget when recorded tool calls and arguments occupy the remaining space. If trimming loses calls or arguments from a Code Mode cell, later waits must not report its call inventory as complete.

## What changed

- Bound all optional tool-call observations against the serialized HTTP or WebSocket message size, preserving ordinary tool outputs and continuation history.
- Shed generic result metadata, sources, and recorded arguments before resource-access evidence, retaining tool names and smaller metadata where possible.
- Invalidate completeness across affected cell outputs and later waits when the outgoing copy loses calls or arguments.
- Preserve size-limit omission markers for direct tool-result metadata when they fit, while continuing to exclude that metadata from custom providers.

## Testing

Add regression coverage for HTTP and WebSocket message budgets, unchanged tool results and history, resource-evidence retention, direct-call omission markers, and Code Mode waits after argument truncation.

peilin-openai 62197a65e5 Add diagnostic reasons to MCP attribution errors (#47899)
## Why

The `attribution_error` status does not explain why MCP attribution is incomplete. Preserve a diagnostic reason so callers can distinguish history and recorder errors from request serialization failures.

## What changed

- Add optional `error_reason` diagnostics to `McpAttribution`, retaining the first recorder error through checkpoints, compaction, resume, and fork.
- Identify missing or invalid checkpoints, conflicting sources, invalid sources, and poisoned recorder state. Use `restored_error_unknown` for older error checkpoints without a reason.
- Distinguish `payload_too_large` from `serialization_failed` in request metadata fallbacks.
- Tolerate missing, unknown, or malformed diagnostic reasons when reading history, without letting diagnostics determine attribution status.

## Testing

Add coverage for reason preservation, recorder poisoning, backward-compatible checkpoint decoding, resume and cold-fork restoration, and request metadata serialization, including oversized payloads.

ningyi-oai 53446f90a5 Preserve more tool metadata within outgoing message budgets (#47758)
## Why

The 32 KiB per-result cap and 128 KiB aggregate budget discard tool metadata even when the outgoing request has room to retain it.

## What changed

- Remove the per-result capture cap and raise the aggregate executed-tool metadata budget to 2 MiB.
- Apply a 15 MiB soft budget to serialized HTTP requests and WebSocket messages, using the actual WebSocket delta. Trim optional result metadata on the wire copy while preserving ordinary content and logical history.
- Prioritize `openai/resource_access` metadata during trimming, and include `overage_bytes` in omission markers.
- Record bytes removed by metadata budgets in `codex.tool_metadata.shed_bytes`, tagged by stage.

## Testing

Add coverage for HTTP and WebSocket message boundaries, resource preservation, residual marker removal, unchanged history, and shedding metrics. Update direct-tool and code-mode tests to verify metadata survives beyond the previous limits.

ningyi-oai e7165c2dbb Preserve tool result metadata more selectively under size limits (#47714)
## Why

Exceeding the aggregate metadata budget previously replaced all tool result metadata with omission markers, discarding small results unnecessarily. Oversized results also lost resource-access evidence even when that evidence alone would fit.

## What changed

- Raise the executed-tool-call metadata budget per request from 32 KiB to 128 KiB while retaining the 32 KiB per-result limit.
- Reduce the largest result metadata first and stop once the request fits, preserving smaller results.
- Retain `openai/resource_access` when full metadata exceeds capture, request, or direct-call retained-history limits. Keep resource lists intact, and discard optional result metadata before sacrificing call records, source evidence, or completion markers.

## Testing

Add regression coverage for selective reduction, resource-access retention, serialized request size, and direct-call and Code Mode behavior. Update compaction and truncation tests for the larger request budget.

Ruslan Nigmatullin 8de2d336b8 Add extension hooks for model requests and response streams (#47679)
## What changed

Add `ModelRequestContributor` and `ModelResponseInterceptor` to the extension API. Contributors can add filtered `client_metadata` without overwriting existing or reserved fields and create interceptors for individual requests.

Wire contributors into HTTP and WebSocket requests, distinguishing generation from warmup. Apply response interceptors in registration order before tracing and response bookkeeping so transformed output is recorded consistently. Interceptors can inspect, buffer, or transform events, with stream ownership carrying request state and cancellation.

## Testing

Add tests for metadata protection, incremental event transformation, interceptor ordering, upstream cancellation, and consistency between delivered output, traces, and WebSocket bookkeeping. Integration tests cover output gating and interruption over HTTP and WebSocket, including a contributor that bypasses gating for warmup requests.

Adam Perry @ OpenAI 9d8de19674 Honor Retry-After and preserve server retry deadlines (#47641)
## Why

HTTP retries used local backoff even when the server supplied `Retry-After`. Relative retry delays also failed to account for time spent propagating errors or reporting retries.

## What changed

- Parse `Retry-After` delay seconds and HTTP dates into a monotonic deadline captured when response headers arrive.
- Honor that deadline for HTTP retries, falling back to local backoff when valid advice is absent.
- Preserve deadlines through API and Bedrock error mapping, stream retries, and exhausted retry state. Expired advice remains a zero delay instead of triggering local backoff.

## Testing

Add coverage for header parsing, deadline countdown and expiry, error mapping after exhausted HTTP retries, and delayed stream retry notifications. Update Responses and remote compaction tests to verify that HTTP retries honor `Retry-After`.

peilin-openai ac98537678 Track cumulative MCP attribution across requests and thread history (#47081)
## What changed

- Record each MCP source and its first turn, including connector and plugin identifiers when available. Cover direct and Code Mode calls, including returned errors and results that are not printed.
- Persist cumulative attribution checkpoints and restore them across compaction, resume, and forks, including forks limited to recent turns.
- Attach fresh attribution to Responses API `client_metadata` under `mcp_attribution`, outside model-visible content. Restrict transmission to allowed OpenAI HTTPS destinations for both HTTP and WebSocket requests.
- Report `attribution_error` for legacy history without checkpoints, malformed or conflicting attribution, and serialized attribution exceeding 16 KiB.

## Testing

Add coverage for source deduplication, checkpoint persistence and restoration, recent-turn forks, direct and Code Mode calls, destination filtering, and the serialized size limit.

felixxia-oai 47915cee7a Filter saved reasoning overrides from requests when disabled (#46291)
## Why

Resuming a thread after disabling reasoning effort overrides still sent saved `configuration_update` items until compaction. Disabling the feature should also apply to requests built from existing history.

## What changed

Pass the `ReasoningEffortOverride` feature state into `ModelClient` and filter `configuration_update` items from request input when disabled. Preserve persisted history and other input items while using the request-level reasoning effort.

## Testing

Add regression coverage for resumed threads, compaction, and WebSocket warmup and turn requests. Verify that saved updates remain in history and `agent_message` items remain in request input.

vkg-oai c56dda711c Track WebSocket continuation modes and full-input send reasons (#46051)
## Why

Per-socket metrics label resends after reconnect as initial requests, obscuring why full input was sent. Client telemetry can preserve that reason across reconnect failures and turn boundaries.

## What changed

- Add `codex.websocket.continuation` to count `response.create` send attempts, including failed sends, with `mode`, `reason`, and `phase` tags.
- Distinguish incremental continuations, fresh requests, restored history, closed connections, and other full-input sends. Track warmup and generation separately.
- Preserve the first continuation reset reason until the next send and identify resumed or forked history.
- Allow session telemetry to use a `MetricsClient` supplied through thread extensions and document the counter's semantics.

## Testing

Add metric assertions for incremental reuse, warmup, changed requests, account switches, reconnects, and resumed or forked history. Add a unit test for preserving reset reasons across repeated resets and turn boundaries.

ningyi-oai 3a589370a4 Enable app tool result metadata with analytics controls (#46010)
## What changed

Capture result metadata for host-owned app calls when analytics and executed tool call metadata recording are enabled. Respect both `analytics.enabled = false` and host-disabled analytics, using the prepared call's ownership to determine eligibility.

Disable incremental WebSocket request reuse when raw result metadata or its call binding changes, so late results attached to an already-sent output are included in the next request. Continue allowing reuse when only other metadata changes or result metadata is filtered out for the endpoint.

## Testing

Extend coverage for direct and code-mode calls, analytics settings and host overrides, runtime recording changes, and prepared call ownership. Add metadata comparison and WebSocket reuse tests, and verify that raw response item notifications continue to omit result metadata.

acrognale-oai 58e2e8cf3c Add workspace routing support for Responses requests (#45812)
## What changed

- Add an optional `WorkspaceRoutingResolver` to `AuthManager` and pass session configuration into routing lookups. Callers without a resolver retain existing routing behavior.
- Apply resolved backend origins and account routing overrides to eligible ChatGPT Responses HTTP requests and WebSocket handshakes. Preserve endpoint paths, validate routing values, and reject HTTP redirects for routed requests, including `NO_CONSTRAINT` routes.
- Key cached WebSocket connections by destination, routing header, and auth revision. Rebuild request setup after credential refreshes and reject account changes during setup or routing discovery.
- Serialize routing lookups per session and retain whether the session has previously been routed.

## Testing

Add tests for path preservation, provider exclusions, concurrent routing lookups, unavailable resolvers, workspace mismatches, redirect rejection, and credential refresh or account changes during request setup.

jif eeded5ba1a Route Guardian requests through /responses with identifying headers (#45736)
## What changed

- Replace dedicated Guardian endpoints with `/responses`, sending `x-codex-guardian: reviewer` or `x-codex-guardian: classifier` for eligible Codex backend requests over HTTP and WebSocket.
- Add model-scoped thread headers, recheck backend authentication on each request attempt, and reconnect WebSockets when the applicable headers change.
- Retain `features.guardianv2.free_guardian` for configuration compatibility while removing its routing gate; the backend now controls Guardian billing.

## Testing

Update tests for reviewer and classifier headers, model and authentication scoping, HTTP fallback, WebSocket reuse, and parent-response metadata across retries.

jif bc5957eac9 Preserve parent cache affinity for ephemeral forks (#44862)
## Why

ChatGPT derives Responses cache affinity from the `session-id` header. Ephemeral forks need to reuse their parent's cache routing while retaining their own session and thread identities.

## What changed

- Inherit the parent session ID as the `prompt_cache_key` for ephemeral root forks.
- Use the prompt cache key for root-agent Responses `session-id` headers, including WebSocket handshakes. Preserve the actual session identity in turn metadata and leave non-root-agent routing unchanged.
- Keep enabled goal tool definitions visible on ephemeral threads, but reject execution with `Goal tools require a persistent thread.` and disable automatic goal continuation without persistent state.

## Testing

Add regression coverage for inherited cache routing with distinct fork identities, matching parent and fork tool definitions, WebSocket session headers, and rejection of ephemeral goal tool execution.

## What changed

- Add host-recorded `tool_result_metadata` snapshots with size limits, redacted debug output, and protection against deserialization from untrusted input. MCP capture remains disabled.
- Preserve accepted metadata across retries and delayed Code Mode results. Shed raw metadata before source evidence, calls, or completion markers when the request budget is exceeded.
- Send raw metadata only to allowed OpenAI and ChatGPT HTTPS endpoints, filtering by the resolved destination for HTTP and WebSocket requests.
- Encode source parse failures as an array entry with type `parse_failed` and an empty ID.

## Testing

Add coverage for metadata bounds and redaction, retained-call updates, budget shedding, disabled MCP capture, and HTTP/WebSocket destination filtering.

rka-oai 1ac689cc7d Remove the unused legacy remote compaction implementation (#44273)
## Why

Remote compaction already uses the normal Responses API, leaving the legacy `/responses/compact` runner unused.

## What changed

- Remove the legacy runner, endpoint client, request types, analytics variant, and obsolete test helpers and snapshots.
- Move tool-output trimming and its metadata tests into `compact_remote_history` for reuse by remote compaction v2.
- Consolidate retained-history filtering in the v2 implementation and remove redundant `RemoteCompactionV2` settings from tests.

## Testing

jif dee21ec1bc Replace Guardian tickets with parent response IDs (#43002)
## What changed

Capture the ID from `response.created` and pass it as `parent_response_id` in Guardian review and classifier request metadata. Clear the current response ID before sampling retries so tool reviews cannot inherit a failed response's ID.

Request Guardian credits with `guardian_credits_requested` on eligible parent requests. Remove the ticket protocol, transport attachment, and ticket-specific body redaction. Keep ordinary app-server client `parent_response_id` values inside `x-codex-turn-metadata` rather than promoting them to Guardian request metadata.

## What changed

- Set `parallel_tool_calls` for regular and remote compaction prompts without consulting model metadata.
- Remove `supports_parallel_tool_calls` from `ModelInfo`, the bundled model catalog, and related fixtures.
- Preserve the existing Responses Lite behavior that disables parallel tool calls at request construction.

jif 964a227d8c Preserve base instruction provenance across sessions (#37446)
## Why

Persisted base instructions need to retain whether they were explicitly customized or generated from a model template. Without that distinction, forks and config-lock replays can treat model-generated instructions as custom and keep the wrong template after a model or personality change.

## What changed

- Record custom or model provenance with base instructions in rollouts and config locks.
- Preserve custom instructions across model changes, while allowing model-generated instructions to follow the selected model and personality.
- Keep legacy rollouts without provenance compatible and propagate provenance through forks and spawned agents.

## Testing

- Cover provenance serialization and legacy rollout decoding.
- Cover role personality changes, forked model changes, config-lock replay, and multi-agent configuration.

rhan-oai df72fdb415 Consolidate model instructions in ModelMessages (#36787)
## What changed

- Remove `ModelInfo.base_instructions` as an in-memory instruction source and use `model_messages.instructions_template` consistently for bundled, remote, fallback, and overridden model metadata.
- Preserve compatibility by promoting legacy `base_instructions` values when reading model responses and caches, and by including rendered legacy instructions when serializing `ModelsResponse` for older clients.
- Treat templates without instruction variables as literal text and retain the other model-message fields when applying instruction overrides.

This completes the consolidation proposed in https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/31302.

## Testing

- Cover legacy response and cache migration, canonical-template precedence, fallback instructions, personality rendering, overrides, and model switching.

Michael Bolin a26bc337cf Require auth managers to receive routing configuration (#34650)
## Why

Auth managers should use the application's resolved HTTP client factory instead
of silently falling back to the transport's default proxy behavior.

## What changed

- Make `AuthRouteConfig` required when constructing an `AuthManager` or

- Add a test helper that explicitly selects the transport-default proxy policy
for callers that do not exercise custom routing.

Michael Bolin 6afcf26d5d core: route Responses API through system proxy (#31335)
## Why

`features.respect_system_proxy` already routes authentication traffic
through the OS proxy APIs, but it does not affect the primary inference
path. That leaves users behind OS-managed proxies unable to send normal
Responses API requests even after login succeeds.

This PR is the first product-path migration onto the route-aware
transport introduced in #31323 and refined in #31331. It also
establishes the construction pattern for later migrations: the effective
feature state is resolved once into a required HTTP client factory
rather than represented by an optional per-call setting.

The scope remains limited to the two HTTP Responses endpoints;
WebSockets, model discovery, memories, realtime, and file uploads remain
follow-up migrations.

## What changed

- Replace the optional proxy marker with an explicit
`OutboundProxyPolicy::{ReqwestDefault, RespectSystemProxy}` and a
required `HttpClientFactory`. The policy has no default, and the
lower-level route-aware reqwest builder is now private.
- Have `Config` construct the factory from the effective feature state
and require every `ModelClient` constructor to receive it. There is no
optional setter or implicit `None` fallback.
- Build HTTP clients for `/responses` and `/responses/compact` with
`ClientRouteClass::Api`, using the complete destination URL so PAC rules
can make URL-specific decisions.
- Layer route-aware selection onto Codex's existing default headers,
Cloudflare cookie store, custom CA handling, and sandbox no-proxy
behavior.
- Add an integration test that loads `features.respect_system_proxy`
through `config.toml`, creates a real Codex session, and verifies that
both a normal Responses turn and remote compaction reach an isolated
local proxy.

## Review guide

1. `http-client/src/outbound_proxy.rs` defines the mandatory
policy/factory boundary and keeps route resolution private.
2. `core/src/config/mod.rs`, `core/src/session/session.rs`, and
`core/src/client.rs` show the compile-time invariant: effective config
creates the factory, and `ModelClient` cannot be constructed without
one.
3. `login/src/auth/default_client.rs` preserves existing default-client
behavior while accepting the required factory for migrated routes.
4. `core/src/client.rs` switches only streaming Responses and remote
compaction HTTP transports to the API route class.
5. `core/tests/suite/responses_api_system_proxy.rs` is the behavioral
regression boundary. Its Linux subprocess deliberately sets the CGI
marker that disables reqwest's implicit environment-proxy handling, so
the test fails if session wiring or either Responses call site falls
back to the default client.

## Test plan

- `just test -p codex-login`
- `just test -p codex-core

- `just bazel-lock-check`

Shijie Rao 80f54d1266 [codex] Treat max as a first-class reasoning effort (#30467)
## Why

The Bedrock GPT-5.6 catalog advertises `max`, but Codex treated it as an
opaque custom effort. That made the reasoning picker render it as
lowercase `max` while known efforts use productized labels.

Making `max` a known effort aligns catalog data, parsing, and UI
presentation without changing the `max` wire value or persisted
representation.

## What changed

- Add first-class `ReasoningEffort::Max` parsing and serialization.
- Use the typed effort in the Bedrock catalog and render it as `Max` in
the TUI.
- Preserve forward-compatible custom-effort coverage with a genuinely
unknown `future` value.

Adrian 51864b0b4b feat: use run agent task auth for inference (#19051)
## Stack

This is PR 3 of the simplified HAI single-run-task stack:

- [#19047](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/19047) Agent Identity
assertion and task-registration primitives, including the shared
run-task helper used by existing Agent Identity JWT auth.
- [#19049](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/19049)
Disabled-by-default ChatGPT auth opt-in that provisions/reuses persisted
Agent Identity runtime auth and its single run task.
- [#19051](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/19051) Run-scoped
provider auth that uses one backend-owned task id for first-party
inference and compaction requests.

[#19054](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/19054) collapsed out of
the active stack because the simplified design no longer needs a
separate background/control-plane task helper.

## Summary

This PR moves Agent Identity usage into provider auth resolution. That
keeps `AgentAssertion` auth tied to first-party OpenAI provider requests
instead of applying a late session-wide override that could affect
local, custom, Bedrock, API-key, or external-bearer providers.

What changed:

- adds a small `ProviderAuthScope` struct carrying the run auth policy
and session source needed by provider-scoped auth resolution
- lets `Session` opt the existing `ModelClient` into `ChatGptAuth`
policy when `use_agent_identity` is enabled, without adding a second
model-client constructor
- resolves Agent Identity only for first-party OpenAI provider auth
paths
- uses the persisted run task id from the `AgentIdentityAuth` record to
build `AgentAssertion` auth for Responses requests
- routes shared request setup through scoped provider auth so unary
compact requests use the same run-task assertion path as inference turns
- keeps local/custom/Bedrock/env-key/external-bearer provider auth
unchanged
- lets missing run-task state surface through the existing model-request
error path instead of silently falling back to bearer auth

This PR intentionally does not create thread-scoped, target-scoped, or
background-scoped task identities. The run task is the only task Codex
registers in this POC shape.

Shijie Rao df1199fddb [codex] Add Ultra reasoning effort (#29899)
## Why

Ultra should be one user-facing reasoning selection for work that
benefits from both maximum reasoning and proactive multi-agent
delegation. Without it, clients must coordinate maximum reasoning with
the experimental `multiAgentMode` setting, even though the inference
backend still expects its existing `max` effort value.

This change makes reasoning effort the source of truth: clients select
`ultra`, core derives proactive multi-agent behavior when the turn is
eligible for multi-agent V2, and inference requests continue to use the
backend-compatible `max` value.

## What changed

- Add `ultra` as a first-class reasoning effort and preserve
model-catalog ordering when exposing it to clients.
- Convert `ultra` to `max` at the inference request boundary, including
Responses HTTP/WebSocket requests, startup prewarm, compaction, and
memory summarization.
- Derive effective multi-agent mode per turn from effective reasoning
effort:
  - eligible multi-agent V2 + `ultra` → `proactive`
  - eligible multi-agent V2 + any other effort → `explicitRequestOnly`
- V1 or otherwise ineligible sessions → no multi-agent mode instruction
- Keep the derived effective mode in turn context history so successive
turns can emit a developer-message update only when the effective mode
changes.
- Remove selected multi-agent mode from core session configuration, turn
construction, thread settings, resume/fork restoration, and subagent
spawn plumbing. Subagents inherit reasoning effort and derive their own
effective mode.
- Retain the experimental app-server `multiAgentMode` fields for wire
compatibility while marking them deprecated. Request values are accepted
but ignored; compatibility response fields report `explicitRequestOnly`.
- Display Ultra in the TUI using the order supplied by `model/list`.

Adam Perry @ OpenAI 31372078d1 auth: move domain mode below app wire types (#29721)
## Why

Authentication mode is a domain concept used by login, model selection,
telemetry, and transports. Keeping the canonical type in app-server
protocol forces those lower-level crates to depend on an unrelated wire
API.

## What changed

- Added canonical `codex_protocol::auth::AuthMode` domain values.
- Kept the app-server wire DTO unchanged and added an explicit app-side
conversion.
- Removed production app-server-protocol dependencies from login,
model-provider-info, models-manager, and otel call paths.

alexsong-oai 1acb722e8a Support thread-level originator overrides (#29477)
## Why

Work(TPP) threads can be launched from the Desktop app, but if they all
keep the Desktop app's default originator then downstream attribution
cannot distinguish local Work launches from cloud-backed Work launches.
`thread/start.serviceName` already carries that launch signal, while
`SessionMeta.originator` is the durable thread-level value that survives
resume and fork.

This change converts the Desktop Work service names into an effective
originator at thread creation time, persists that originator with the
thread, and keeps using it for later model requests and memory writes.

## What changed

- Map `CODEX_WORK_LOCAL` and `CODEX_WORK_CLOUD` service names to
per-thread originators, while preserving
`CODEX_INTERNAL_ORIGINATOR_OVERRIDE` as the highest-precedence override.
- Persist the effective originator in `SessionMeta.originator`, read it
back on resume/fork, and inherit the parent originator for subagent
spawns when there is no persisted session metadata.
- Handle truncated `SpawnAgentForkMode::LastNTurns` forks by falling
back to the live parent originator when the forked history no longer
includes `SessionMeta`.
- Thread the per-thread originator through Responses headers,
websocket/compaction request paths, thread-store creation, rollout
metadata, and memory stage-one telemetry.

Celia Chen e65e480e0d chore: improve expired Bedrock credential errors (#28992)
## Why

Amazon Bedrock returns a `401 Unauthorized` response containing
`Signature expired:` when an AWS credential, including a short-lived
`AWS_BEARER_TOKEN_BEDROCK`, has expired. Codex currently surfaces that
response as a generic `unexpected status` error, which does not explain
how to recover.

Environment-provided bearer tokens cannot be refreshed automatically, so
the error should direct users to refresh their AWS credentials or
replace or remove the environment token and restart Codex. This
classification belongs to the Amazon Bedrock provider so similar
responses from other providers retain their existing behavior.

## What changed

- Add a synchronous `ModelProvider::map_api_error` hook that defaults to
the existing provider-neutral API error mapping, and route model
request, stream, WebSocket, and terminal unauthorized errors through the
active provider.
- Override the hook for Amazon Bedrock. After preserving the structured
status, body, URL, and request metadata, recognize `401` responses
containing `Signature expired:` and attach actionable credential
guidance.
- Keep `codex-protocol` provider-neutral by representing the guidance as
an optional `user_message`. Error rendering prefers this message while
continuing to append the URL, request ID, Cloudflare ray, and
authorization diagnostics.
- Add model-provider coverage for expired signatures and negative cases,
core coverage for provider dispatch after unauthorized recovery, and a
TUI snapshot for the rendered error.

## Testing

pakrym-oai f00f93d8c0 [codex] Assign response item IDs when recording history (#28814)
## Why

Client-created response items enter history without IDs, so their
identity is lost across rollout persistence and resume. IDs should be
assigned once at the history-recording boundary, while IDs returned by
the server must remain unchanged.

The Responses API validates item IDs using type-specific prefixes.
Locally generated IDs therefore use the matching prefix plus a
hyphenated UUIDv7, keeping them valid while distinguishable from
server-generated IDs. Because this changes persisted history and
provider request shapes, the behavior is opt-in behind the
under-development `item_ids` feature. Compaction triggers remain request
controls whose API shape does not accept an ID.

## What changed

- Register the disabled-by-default `item_ids` feature and expose it in
`config.schema.json`.
- Make supported optional `ResponseItem` IDs serializable and expose
them in the generated app-server schemas.
- When `item_ids` is enabled, assign an ID during conversation-history
preparation if an item has no ID.
- Generate type-prefixed, hyphenated UUIDv7 IDs using the Responses API
item conventions.
- Preserve existing server IDs without rewriting them.
- Persist assigned IDs in rollouts and include them in subsequent
Responses requests.
- Remove the unsupported ID field from `CompactionTrigger` and document
why it has no ID.
- Add integration coverage for enabled ID persistence, preservation of
server IDs, and omission of generated IDs while the feature is disabled.

`prepare_conversation_items_for_history` is the single response-item ID
allocation boundary.

Owen Lin 040dafa32d feat(core): add metadata field to ResponseItem (#28355)
## Description

This PR adds an optional `metadata` field to `ResponseItem` for
Responses API calls. Only mechanical plumbing, no actual values
populated and sent yet. Turns out just adding a new field to
`ResponseItem` has quite a large blast radius already.

This change is backwards compatible because `metadata` is optional and
omitted when absent, so existing response items and rollout history
without it still deserialize and requests that do not set it keep the
same wire shape. For provider compatibility, we strip out `metadata`
before non-OpenAI Responses requests so Azure and AWS Bedrock never see
this field.

My followup PR here will actually make use of it to start storing and
passing along `turn_id`: https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/28360

## What changed

- Added `ResponseItemMetadata` with optional `turn_id`, plus optional
`metadata` on Responses API item variants and inter-agent communication.
- Preserved item metadata through response-item rewrites such as
truncation, missing tool-output synthesis, compaction history
rebuilding, visible-history conversion, rollout/resume, and generated
app-server schemas/types.
- Strip item metadata from non-OpenAI Responses requests while
preserving it for OpenAI-shaped requests.
- Updated the mechanical fixture/test construction churn required by the
new optional field.

Ahmed Ibrahim 640d61b121 [codex] Send request-scoped turn state over WebSocket (#27996)
## Context

Turn state is scoped to one logical turn, but the WebSocket path
currently exchanges it through upgrade headers, which are scoped to the
physical connection. A connection may be reused across turns, so its
handshake cannot represent the turn lifecycle reliably.

## Change

Exchange turn state on each WebSocket response request instead:

- send an established value in `response.create.client_metadata`
- read the returned value from the existing `response.metadata` event
- retain the first value in the turn-scoped `ModelClientSession`
`OnceLock`
- start the next logical turn without state, even when it reuses the
same WebSocket connection

This gives WebSocket requests the same first-value-wins contract as the
existing HTTP path.

## Test plan

Integration coverage verifies that:

- WebSocket replays returned state on same-turn follow-ups
- later response metadata does not replace the first value
- state resets at the logical turn boundary without requiring a
reconnect

CI validates the full change.

## Stack

This is 1/2. #28002 builds on this request-scoped transport to carry
established state through compact requests.
