Adam Perry @ OpenAI 404cd42aa5 Accept environment requests at thread and turn settings boundaries (#51422)
## What changed

Add `TurnEnvironmentRequests` to carry environment requests together with their fallback working directory. Update thread settings overrides and active turn settings to accept requests, constructing `TurnEnvironmentSelection` values in the receiving thread before validation and runtime use.

Adapt app-server callers, reviewer settings, and existing tests to supply requests or explicitly convert runtime selections back into requests.

Adam Perry @ OpenAI 2dbcab90e2 Separate environment requests from runtime selections (#51221)
## What changed

Introduce `TurnEnvironmentRequest` for caller-supplied environment input and construct `TurnEnvironmentSelection` at session startup and app-server settings boundaries. Update thread startup, default environments, and inherited environment handoffs to use requests, with explicit conversions when reusing runtime selections.

Move the environment types into `protocol::environment` while retaining their `protocol` re-exports. Update test fixtures and existing tests to build request inputs separately from runtime selections.

Owen Lin bee28e8a06 Cap persisted command output in paginated history at 64 KiB (#50427)
## Why

Paginated history previously persisted completed commands' full `aggregated_output`, allowing large command outputs to inflate stored history.

## What changed

- Limit persisted command `aggregated_output` to 64 KiB, including a truncation marker. Preserve the beginning and end of the output without splitting UTF-8 characters.
- Apply the shared persistence policy to rollout recording, thread-store appends, and legacy-to-paginated history migration.
- Measure persisted payload bytes after truncation so persistence metrics reflect the stored representation.

## Testing

Add coverage for the byte limit, UTF-8 boundaries, unchanged inputs that fit, and markers that exceed the budget. Verify capped output in paginated thread history and migrated legacy history, and verify persistence metrics use the truncated payload size.

Nick Steele 0b1b78a4f1 Preserve thread overrides and cloud policy validity during config reloads (#49269)
## Why

Reloads can reject a valid thread configuration when the host configuration references a missing model provider that thread overrides replace. Concurrent cloud refreshes can also leave older policy snapshots or staged cache writes eligible for publication.

## What changed

- Compose preserved session layers before materializing refreshed configuration, retaining source-aware validation errors.
- Carry cloud policy revision bindings through config loading and role overrides. Reject stale MCP refreshes and disable enterprise MCP authorization when the policy is suspended. Retire the old policy when replacing or clearing its loader.
- Stage cloud cache writes in temporary files and publish them atomically only while their policy revision remains current.
- Route file reloads through the shared runtime refresh path, resolve paths relative to each config file, and preserve session settings. Restore host defaults for `secret_auth_storage` and `mcp_oauth_refresh_coordination` when explicit overrides are removed.

## Testing

Add regressions for thread-provided model providers, managed plugin and feature requirement refreshes, stale and suspended policy snapshots, superseded and retired cache writes, and file reloads preserving runtime settings and restoring feature defaults.

Brent Traut de9e78e3e7 Add item anchors to thread/items/list pagination (#48151)
## What changed

Allow `cursor` to accept an item anchor such as `{"type":"item","itemId":"item-123"}` with a non-empty `turnId`. Ascending pagination returns items after the anchor; descending pagination returns items before it. The anchor itself is excluded, and subsequent pages use the returned opaque string cursor.

Resolve anchors within the requested turn's visible history, including inherited fork history. Reject missing turn IDs and empty, unknown, or out-of-scope item IDs with invalid params (`-32602`). Preserve existing string and null cursor behavior, and update the protocol schemas, TypeScript and Python types, and API documentation.

## Testing

Add protocol round-trip and invalid-shape tests, app-server coverage for anchored pagination and errors, and thread-store coverage for growing turns, reverse pagination, page boundaries, fork visibility, and anchor scope validation.

Dmitriy Kovalenko 5bfb04b247 Attach inherited rollout history to diagnostic reports (#47653)
## Why

Selected rollouts can reference history stored in ancestor rollouts through `history_base`. Attaching only the selected files leaves that inherited history out of diagnostic reports.

## What changed

When `include_logs` is enabled, follow nested `history_base` references and attach ancestor prefixes up to the recorded byte offsets. Deduplicate ancestors, retain the largest requested prefix, and skip rollouts already selected for upload.

Bound discovery to 64 ancestors and five seconds, and enforce attachment size limits. Missing, unreadable, or incomplete ancestor prefixes are best effort and do not prevent the report upload.

## Testing

Add a unit test verifying that nested parent and grandparent history bases are attached with the expected filenames and contents.

sayan-oai 370cd7cba8 Allow environment selection updates during an active turn (#47435)
## What changed

- Add `environments` to `TurnSettingsUpdate` to replace the selection for subsequent steps without changing future turns.
- Capture model settings and environments together so combined updates apply or reject atomically, while existing steps retain their captured selection.
- Validate environment IDs, working directories, configuration ownership, and permission requirements against the running turn's selections.
- Preserve executor startup behavior when switching environments and use the step's local working directory for tool hooks.

## Testing

Add coverage for workspace switching and restoration on the next turn, atomic model and environment updates, permission validation, executor connection waits, and replacement of pending environment selections.

jif 0d083092b4 Add an experimental rollout compression endpoint (#46020)
## What changed

Add `rollout/compress` to trigger a best-effort background compression pass for cold local rollouts, even when `features.local_thread_store_compression` is disabled. The method takes no parameters and immediately returns `{}` to acknowledge scheduling, not completion. Existing worker locks, concurrency limits, and cooldowns still apply.

Require the `experimentalApi` capability and reject non-local thread stores. Document the endpoint and the requirement that clients sharing the Codex home support compressed rollout files.

## Testing

Add integration tests for compression with the startup flag disabled, lossless rollout readback, experimental capability enforcement, and rejection of non-local thread stores.

Owen Lin 3052bbcf8c Remove the deprecated thread/rollback API (#44915)
## What changed

Remove `thread/rollback`, its request and response types, generated bindings, and the core `Op::ThreadRollback` operation. Requests now follow the generic unknown-method rejection path. Document `thread/revert` as the alternative for paginated threads.

Keep historical `ThreadRolledBack` markers and legacy error deserialization so existing rollouts remain compatible with replay and migration.

## Testing

Adapt retained-context and Guardian history tests to append legacy rollback markers and resume threads, preserving coverage of surviving instructions, answers, and review history.

joeytrasatti-openai 3319d9b296 Add app-server APIs for stored thread attachments (#44564)
## What changed

- Add `thread/attachment/add`, `thread/attachment/list`, and `thread/attachment/remove` to manage durable resource references without loading the owning thread or changing conversation history.
- Identify attachments by thread, `attachmentType`, and `identityKey`. Repeated adds return the existing attachment; repeated removals succeed without emitting another update. Listing supports cursor pagination.
- Broadcast `thread/attachment/updated` after creation or deletion, after responding to the requester. Serialize attachment mutations with thread lifecycle operations and reject stores that do not support attachments.
- Update protocol schemas, TypeScript and Python bindings, documentation, and TUI notification handling so attachment updates do not add untracked threads to the agent picker.

## Testing

Add coverage for unloaded threads, pagination, idempotent addition and removal, reattachment, invalid inputs, unsupported stores, response-before-notification ordering across clients, and TUI notification routing.

Eric Traut e1b23086ac Restore saved threads when the managed daemon restarts (#44314)
## Why

Saved threads need to resume after a managed daemon restart so active goals can continue without waiting for a client to reconnect.

## What changed

- Consume the recovery snapshot at startup and restore threads in the background through the shared cold-resume path.
- Trigger idle lifecycle work without attaching a client subscription, and leave already-loaded threads untouched.
- Continue recovery after individual thread failures and abort background recovery during shutdown.

## Testing

Extend the daemon restart integration test to verify goal continuation before client reconnection, restored conversation history and tools, idle-thread restoration, and recovery snapshot consumption. Include malformed snapshots and an invalid thread ID.

jif 2cbbf0c9b5 Add memory dual writing and v2 readiness reporting (#43827)
## Why

Allow v2 memories to build in the background while the selected memory version continues supplying context, and let clients check whether v2 has enough consolidated data and a valid summary to use.

## What changed

- Add `memories.dual_write`, disabled by default, to run v1 and v2 extraction and consolidation concurrently with separate stores and directories.
- Add the experimental `memory/status` endpoint, returning `v2ConsolidatedThreads` and `v2Ready`. Readiness requires a valid v2 summary and a consolidation thread count meeting `minConsolidatedThreads` (default 20, supported range 1–4096).
- Persist the largest thread count from a successful consolidation across pruning and clear it on memory reset.
- Share v2 summary validation between consolidation and status reporting, and tag memory metrics with `memory_version`.

## Testing

Add tests for independent dual-write outputs, preserving existing notes without importing them into v2, and readiness behavior across consolidation ownership checks, missing summaries, configurable thresholds, thread deletion, and memory reset.

Anton Panasenko 2b554fd3f9 Expose loaded thread environments in app-server responses (#42386)
## What changed

- Add the experimental `Thread.environments` field with each selected environment's ID, working directory, and runtime workspace roots.
- Populate the field from live thread state in start, resume, read, list, and unarchive responses. Use `null` for unloaded threads and an empty list when a loaded thread has no environment selection.
- Document that the field reports selection rather than connection status and does not affect executor selection or resume behavior.

## Testing

- Cover selection updates, unloaded and resumed threads, loaded pathless unarchives, and clients that subscribe after environment connection notifications.

jif 2e5ee418ad Improve Guardian report diagnostics (#42033)
## Why

Reports from a large thread tree can exceed the rollout attachment limit, making
the threads involved in a failed Guardian review harder to diagnose.

## What changed

- Prioritize descendants with retained failed reviews when selecting bounded
report rollouts, while always preserving the reported thread.
- Include each selected thread's available Guardian trunk rollout alongside its
  conversation rollout.
- Add a thread index attachment with selected filenames, bounded omission details,
retained failure threads, and the process-wide discarded-record count.
- Link failed-review records to their reviewed turn and target item when available.

## Testing

- Cover failed-review prioritization, bounded omission metadata, discarded-record
accounting, and turn/item linkage in Guardian report records.

## What changed

- Add the experimental `turn/settings/update` method for changing `model`,
`effort`, `summary`, and `serviceTier` on a specific live turn without
  changing future turns.
- Report whether the update was applied or the target turn was unavailable,
and reject unsupported fields, disabled feature use, unsafe model changes,
and direct updates to parent-owned subagents.
- Document the method's feature requirements, null handling, and limits.

guinness-oai 41ca88e95c Persist realtime events in the thread timeline (#40508)
## Why

Clients need a bounded view of realtime conversations that preserves the order of speech, agent work, and turn lifecycle events without loading the full thread history.

## What changed

- Persist realtime session boundaries, transcript segments, and promoted agent items in paginated thread rollouts.
- Add the experimental `thread/timeline/list` API to page ordinary items, realtime items, and turn boundaries in canonical rollout order. Include `activeRealtimeSessionAtPageStart` so each page can be rendered independently.
- Emit typed `thread/realtime/item/started`, `thread/realtime/item/transcript/delta`, and `thread/realtime/item/completed` notifications around durable realtime items.
- Keep the existing `thread/items/list` response and legacy thread history behavior unchanged.

## Testing

- Cover mixed timeline pagination, realtime-session state at page boundaries, rollout replay, subagent history prefixes, transcript streaming, steering, and promoted agent artifacts.

rhan-oai b6333bb1bb Enforce subagent ownership across app-server inputs (#40464)
## Why

Parent-owned Multi-Agent V2 subagents must remain controlled by their parent,
but several app-server endpoints could still mutate them directly.

## What changed

- Centralize the direct-input ownership check and apply it to turn injection,
MCP calls, reviews, compaction, rollback and revert, shell and Guardian
actions, realtime requests, and goal mutations.
- Enforce the same policy for goal mutations on unloaded threads while keeping
goal reads and turn interruption available.
- Document the affected endpoint behavior and continue exposing
  `canAcceptDirectInput: false` for parent-owned subagents.

## Testing

- Cover direct-input rejection for both legacy and paginated thread history.
- Cover goal mutation ownership checks for unloaded V2 subagents, V1
  subagents, and non-subagent V2 threads.

sayan-oai d75c85f651 Separate thread settings from environment configuration (#39597)
## Why

Environment-owned permission profiles and workspace roots must remain effective
without being persisted or restored as thread-owned settings.

## What changed

- Keep thread settings snapshots and restore data separate from the effective
configuration supplied by the primary environment.
- Use resolved environment permissions, active profiles, workspace roots, and

jif 683716cee9 Use effective permissions when trusting app-server projects (#38390)
## Why

Project-local configuration can launch host processes. Requested write access may be reduced to read-only by managed constraints or platform support, so the request alone must not cause the app server to trust a project and load its configuration.

- Track Agent Plugin manifests through plugin, skill, and MCP loading so their capabilities use format-specific behavior without changing legacy plugins.
- Discover only direct-child skills, exclude app and hook capabilities, isolate MCP data, and reject MCP configuration files that are non-regular or resolve outside the plugin root.
- Bound model-visible skill instructions, plugin instructions, MCP descriptions, schemas, individual tools, and the aggregate Agent Plugin MCP tool set.
- Stop MCP and OAuth redirects when Agent Plugins send configured or authorization headers, while retaining existing redirect behavior for legacy MCP servers.

## Testing

- Add coverage for capability filtering, skill discovery, isolated MCP data and reserved-path expansion, unsafe MCP configuration files, context limits, and redirect handling.

joeytrasatti-openai c42ea41ee0 Add thread section management APIs (#36380)
## What changed

- Add `threadSection/create`, `threadSection/update`, and `threadSection/delete` app-server methods, with generated protocol schemas and TypeScript bindings.
- Persist custom sections in SQLite with stable UUIDv7 identities, trim and validate display names, and prevent renaming or deleting the built-in pinned section.
- Delete sections transactionally and return their active and archived threads to the unsectioned list.
- Serialize section mutations with section listing so concurrent requests observe ordered updates.

## Testing

- Cover section persistence across restarts, ordered renames, member cleanup on deletion, invalid requests, unsupported stores, and thread-store/state-runtime behavior.

joeytrasatti-openai ad6fc66b6d Add persisted manual ordering for thread sections (#36007)
## What changed

- Add `thread/section/move` to atomically move a thread into, within, or out of a section. Threads can be inserted before an existing member or appended, and moves within a section preserve `sectionEnteredAt`.
- Add `section_position` sorting to `thread/list`, with ascending order as its default, and expose `sectionEnteredAt` in thread responses.
- Persist section positions and entry times in SQLite, including migration of existing section members into recency order. Section membership is no longer updated through `thread/metadata/update`.

## Testing

- Cover section moves, reordering, pagination, persistence across restarts and rollout reconciliation, concurrent updates, and rank renumbering.

Tamir Duberstein 9a6668f674 Report direct input capability for listed subagents (#35944)
## What changed

- Enrich `thread/list` and `thread/search` results for loaded spawned threads with live status and `canAcceptDirectInput`.
- Report `true` for V1 agents that accept direct input and `false` for parent-owned V2 agents, while leaving the capability `null` when it is unavailable or inapplicable.
- Distinguish untracked threads from threads known to have shut down when resolving loaded status.

## Testing

- Cover list, search, ancestor-filtered list, and rejected V2 direct-input behavior.

Celia Chen 709283b432 Use configured HTTP clients for all MCP OAuth requests (#35814)
## What changed

- Require callers to provide an HTTP client for MCP OAuth discovery and login, removing the separate direct `reqwest` path.
- Use the shared `http` and `url` types throughout the MCP client and drop its direct `reqwest` dependency.
- Preserve configured MCP headers when routing OAuth discovery through the provided client.

## Testing

- Add coverage that routed OAuth discovery forwards configured headers.

Celia Chen 9ea975a2dc Route MCP OAuth through configured HTTP clients (#35806)
## What changed

- Pass resolved, route-aware HTTP clients through MCP OAuth discovery and login so CLI commands, plugin installation, and skill dependency setup honor configured proxies and execution environments.
- Apply per-plugin MCP server configuration and requirements before starting OAuth during installation, and skip disabled servers or servers assigned to unowned environments.
- Preserve configured MCP server policies when merging remotely installed plugin metadata.

## Testing

- Cover proxy-routed OAuth for `codex mcp add`, `codex mcp login`, plugin installation, and skill MCP dependencies.
- Cover plugin-install OAuth filtering for disabled servers, plugin requirements, and unowned environments.

Owen Lin 963316583b Enforce writer ownership for thread archive and deletion (#35031)
## Why

Paginated threads allow only one app-server process to write at a time. Archive and delete operations must not mutate a thread or its spawned descendants while another process owns any of them.

## What changed

- Acquire paginated writer locks for the full archive or deletion set before changing rollout files, including descendants whose rollout has not materialized yet.
- Add a batch archive store operation so ownership conflicts are detected before any thread in the subtree is archived.
- Return ownership conflicts as JSON-RPC invalid-request errors and document the behavior.

## Testing

- Cover archive and deletion conflicts for owned threads and descendants, including unmaterialized rollouts.
- Verify deletion still removes rollouts with unreadable metadata.

richardopenai b834702b27 Support incremental replay of updated thread items (#35013)
## Why

Persisted item snapshots can be updated after their initial projection while retaining their creation order. Callers need a way to read those updates incrementally without replaying every item.

## What changed

- Track the rollout ordinal of each item's latest snapshot separately from its creation ordinal.
- Let thread-store callers filter items after an exclusive update watermark and sort pages by either creation or update ordinal.
- Keep existing app-server reads creation-ordered, reject incremental reads across forked lineages, and preserve compatibility with older writers.

## Testing

- Cover update-watermark filtering, pagination, sort directions, per-turn reads, cursor validation, forked lineages, migration compatibility, and refreshed item snapshots.

Owen Lin 0b175e6439 Protect fork history references during rollout cleanup (#34566)
## Why

Paginated forks can retain a `history_base` pointer to another rollout. Deleting or compressing either side of that relationship can leave the fork without the rollout history it references.

## What changed

- Add a rollout reference index that scans active, archived, and compressed rollout metadata.
- Reject deletion when a rollout is still referenced by a fork outside the requested deletion set.
- Delete spawned thread subtrees as one store operation so internal references do not block deleting the complete subtree, while external references preflight the request before any files are removed.
- Skip referenced rollouts, fork-pointer rollouts, and rollouts with unreadable metadata during background compression.

## Testing

- Cover reference indexing across active, archived, compressed, duplicate, and self-referencing rollouts.
- Verify deletion rejects external references without partially deleting a subtree and permits batch deletion of internally referenced threads.
- Verify compression preserves fork pointer chains and continues past unreadable metadata.

Charlie Marsh 1e20272fa5 Avoid cloning thread history for token usage replay (#34361)
## What changed

- Resolve the turn ID for restored token usage before sending resume and fork responses, avoiding a clone of the full thread history.
- Add `ThreadHistoryBuilder::active_turn_id` so attribution can inspect the active turn without materializing its items.
- Stop history reconstruction at the latest persisted `TokenCount` and verify that a later tail turn does not receive the replayed usage.

Owen Lin c1862b8db4 Add occurrence search for paginated threads (#33907)
## What changed

- Add the experimental `thread/searchOccurrences` app-server method for case-insensitive literal search across visible user messages and final assistant messages without replaying the thread.
- Return paginated snippets with UTF-16 match ranges and `thread/turns/list` cursors for navigating to each matching turn.
- Index persisted item types to efficiently select searchable messages from paginated thread history.

## Testing

- Add an app-server integration test covering pagination, steering messages, final-answer selection, Markdown normalization, and UTF-16 offsets.

- Support evaluating thread-specific configuration with `threadId` and refreshing the hosted connector tool snapshot with `forceRefresh`.
- Preserve observed connector identities as disabled when global or workspace policy disables Apps, and retain the previous snapshot when a refresh fails.

## Testing

- Cover cached and forced reads, policy and configuration filtering, thread-specific configuration, snapshot refresh failures, and protocol serialization.

Owen Lin da61f7d8e1 Enable paginated thread history in app-server (#33364)
## What changed

- Allow `thread/start` to select experimental `historyMode: "paginated"` when the thread store supports turn and item pagination.
- Resume paginated threads with bounded model context and require `excludeTurns: true` instead of loading full history.
- Return `turnsBackwardsCursor` and `itemsBackwardsCursor` from `thread/resume` so clients can hydrate durable history through `thread/turns/list` and `thread/items/list` while newer records arrive through live notifications.
- Reject operations that still require full history, including `initialTurnsPage`, `thread/read` with `includeTurns: true`, `thread/rollback`, and detached review.
- Make item cursors independent of the optional `turnId` filter.

## Testing

- Cover paginated thread start, cold and live resume, backwards cursor hydration, metadata reads, unsupported operations, and stores without pagination support.

Felipe Coury d88db19144 Preserve thread context when retrying or editing turns (#33211)
## What changed

- Add experimental `beforeTurnId` support to `thread/fork` for copying history strictly before a turn, including an in-progress turn.
- Use before-turn forks for TUI backtracking and safety retries so the replacement prompt retains thread context instead of recreating the branch from the preceding turn or a new thread.
- Add experimental `deferGoalContinuation` support so safety-retry forks can inherit an active goal while waiting for the replacement turn before automatic continuation resumes.
- Hide duplicated nested-review prompts when replaying history or selecting a prompt to edit.

## Testing

- Cover before-turn truncation, fork validation, active-goal inheritance, TUI safety retries, backtracking, and nested-review replay.

Celia Chen 518085387b Support Amazon Bedrock login in the app server (#33170)
## What changed

- Handle experimental `account/login/start` requests with `type: "amazonBedrock"`.
- Validate the API key and Mantle region, persist the managed credential, select the `amazon-bedrock` model provider, and emit the standard login and account-update notifications.
- Reload configuration for account and authentication status reads so the newly selected provider is visible immediately, with the startup configuration as a fallback.
- Extend the app-server test client with an Amazon Bedrock login mode that redacts API keys from request logs.

## Testing

- Add app-server coverage for successful login, credential and provider persistence, notifications, refreshed account state, invalid inputs, conflicting configuration, forced ChatGPT login, external authentication, and configuration reload failure.

Owen Lin e0a3641e6c Support paginated thread history in app-server list APIs (#33152)
## Why

Clients could discover threads with paginated history, but could not page their
turns through `thread/turns/list`.

## What changed

- Route `thread/turns/list` for paginated threads through the thread store,
preserving cursors, sort direction, turn status, timing, errors, and the
requested `summary` or `notLoaded` item view.
- Reject the `full` turn item view for paginated threads and direct clients to
  `thread/items/list` for complete item pagination.
- Return each item page entry with both its containing `turnId` and `item`, so
clients can regroup thread-wide pages into turns.
- Expose local thread-store turn and item pagination through the `ThreadStore`
  implementation.

## Testing

Added app-server coverage for paging projected turns and items, item views,
cursors, turn metadata, and rejection of the unsupported `full` view.

pakrym-oai 393f64565a Scope runtime workspace roots to execution environments (#32952)
## Why

Multi-environment turns can run against different filesystems, so a single
thread-wide workspace-root list cannot accurately describe every selected
environment.

## What changed

- Add optional `runtimeWorkspaceRoots` to each app-server environment selection.
Omitted roots default to that environment's `cwd`, while an empty list selects
  no roots.
- Carry environment-native roots through turn selection, model-visible context,
  permission materialization, and tool sandboxing.
- Keep the top-level `runtimeWorkspaceRoots` field as a compatibility input when
constructing default environment selections; explicit selections use their
  own roots.

## Testing

- Cover thread and turn API defaults, overrides, empty roots, and schema
  round-tripping.
- Verify foreign roots remain model-visible and remote execution applies the
target environment's roots before sandbox selection.
