## What changed
- Track connected and disconnected states across initial remote exec-server connections and reconnection attempts.
- Emit experimental `thread/environment/connected` and `thread/environment/disconnected` app-server notifications for each thread selecting the environment. Each payload identifies the thread and environment; current state is not replayed when a thread starts.
- Stop forwarding connection events when an environment selection is removed or replaced.
## Testing
- Cover connection, disconnection, reconnection, shared-environment notifications, and replacement of a selected environment.

## What changed
- Add experimental `beforeTurnId` support to `thread/fork` for copying history strictly before a turn, including an in-progress turn.
- Use before-turn forks for TUI backtracking and safety retries so the replacement prompt retains thread context instead of recreating the branch from the preceding turn or a new thread.
- Add experimental `deferGoalContinuation` support so safety-retry forks can inherit an active goal while waiting for the replacement turn before automatic continuation resumes.
- Hide duplicated nested-review prompts when replaying history or selecting a prompt to edit.
## Testing
- Cover before-turn truncation, fork validation, active-goal inheritance, TUI safety retries, backtracking, and nested-review replay.

## Why
Sparse and out-of-order rate-limit updates can omit account metadata or let an
older full read overwrite a newer workspace hard stop. Credit availability also
does not always include a displayable balance.
## What changed
- Propagate the backend's `spendControlReached` state through rate-limit
snapshots and the app-server protocol, preserving it across sparse updates.
- Keep workspace hard-stop classifications for error routing and ignore stale
full-read results after a newer hard-stop notification.
- Base TUI warnings and model-switch prompts on credit availability and hard-stop
state, and show `Credits: Available` when a finite balance is hidden.
## Testing
Added coverage for spend-control mapping, snapshot merging, out-of-order reads,
workspace error routing, warning and prompt behavior, and credit status display.

## Why
Amazon Bedrock can use either a Codex-managed API key or credentials managed by
AWS, so logout must not remove or misrepresent credentials that Codex does not
control.
## What changed
- Remove the managed Bedrock key on logout and clear `model_provider` only when
its user-config value is still `amazon-bedrock`.
- Reject logout for AWS-managed Bedrock credentials without changing existing
authentication or configuration.
- Add a `test-logout` app-server test-client command that waits for the
resulting `account/updated` notification.
## Testing
Add coverage for managed and AWS-managed Bedrock logout, concurrent provider
changes, config reload failures, and conditional user-config cleanup.
GitOrigin-RevId: a003c0ec27ad7b36d499fe7b63ab4a0dd6369b4f
## What changed
- Handle experimental `account/login/start` requests with `type: "amazonBedrock"`.
- Validate the API key and Mantle region, persist the managed credential, select the `amazon-bedrock` model provider, and emit the standard login and account-update notifications.
- Reload configuration for account and authentication status reads so the newly selected provider is visible immediately, with the startup configuration as a fallback.
- Extend the app-server test client with an Amazon Bedrock login mode that redacts API keys from request logs.
## Testing
- Add app-server coverage for successful login, credential and provider persistence, notifications, refreshed account state, invalid inputs, conflicting configuration, forced ChatGPT login, external authentication, and configuration reload failure.

## What changed
- Define `SleepItem` in `codex-extension-items` and carry `clock.sleep` events through `TurnItem::Extension`.
- Preserve sleep persistence, thread-history reconstruction, and the app-server's `type: "sleep"` schema while reusing the extension-owned type.
## Testing
- Add serialization coverage for the `clock.sleep` extension wire shape and its protocol wrapper.
- Update sleep lifecycle and thread-history tests to exercise the extension-owned item.

## Why
Detached reviews should behave like ordinary forked turns so clients get the normal steering, tool, permission, and item-stream behavior.
## What changed
- Add a bundled `$review-agent` skill with read-only, defect-first review guidance.
- Start detached reviews through `AgentRunner` with a target-specific prompt that explicitly references the bundled skill. Keep inline reviews on the existing review-mode flow.
- Continue emitting the detached review thread and turn identifiers through the app-server API.
## Testing
- Update the detached review integration test to verify the forked turn prompt, ordinary turn completion, and selection of the bundled skill when a user skill has the same name.

## Why
Clients could discover threads with paginated history, but could not page their
turns through `thread/turns/list`.
## What changed
- Route `thread/turns/list` for paginated threads through the thread store,
preserving cursors, sort direction, turn status, timing, errors, and the
requested `summary` or `notLoaded` item view.
- Reject the `full` turn item view for paginated threads and direct clients to
`thread/items/list` for complete item pagination.
- Return each item page entry with both its containing `turnId` and `item`, so
clients can regroup thread-wide pages into turns.
- Expose local thread-store turn and item pagination through the `ThreadStore`
implementation.
## Testing
Added app-server coverage for paging projected turns and items, item views,
cursors, turn metadata, and rejection of the unsupported `full` view.
GitOrigin-RevId: 9c4a127a9b4fa91313f0e87494c62fe2e3a06f19
## What changed
- Check the source thread's `history_mode` before loading its history for
`thread/fork`.
- Return the existing `paginated_threads is not supported yet` method-not-found
error for paginated source threads.
## Testing
- Add an app-server integration test covering rejection of a paginated source
thread.
GitOrigin-RevId: 49b4b8aef7c9488eec93c24e831cea6382f8c995
## Why
Clients that account for individual upstream Responses API calls need the exact
usage for each completion rather than accumulated or estimated thread usage.
## What changed
- Add the opt-in `rawResponse/completed` app-server notification with the
`threadId`, `turnId`, `responseId`, and upstream `usage` payload.
- Emit the transient event for normal turns and compaction requests when
`experimentalRawEvents` is enabled. The event is not persisted or replayed,
and `usage` is `null` when the upstream response omits it.
- Export the notification in the app-server schemas and document its behavior.
## Testing
- Cover exact token breakdowns for turn and compaction completions.
GitOrigin-RevId: 49040a060bf1784c1ff1dd62112efb4a778428c4
## Why
Multi-environment turns can run against different filesystems, so a single
thread-wide workspace-root list cannot accurately describe every selected
environment.
## What changed
- Add optional `runtimeWorkspaceRoots` to each app-server environment selection.
Omitted roots default to that environment's `cwd`, while an empty list selects
no roots.
- Carry environment-native roots through turn selection, model-visible context,
permission materialization, and tool sandboxing.
- Keep the top-level `runtimeWorkspaceRoots` field as a compatibility input when
constructing default environment selections; explicit selections use their
own roots.
## Testing
- Cover thread and turn API defaults, overrides, empty roots, and schema
round-tripping.
- Verify foreign roots remain model-visible and remote execution applies the
target environment's roots before sandbox selection.
GitOrigin-RevId: c6e7a62883c45c676c153055f46a55ee15a323a4
## What changed
- Add the experimental `environment/status` request for inspecting a configured environment without starting or reconnecting it.
- Report `ready`, `pending`, `disconnected`, or `unknown`, including error details for disconnected and unknown environments.
- Probe ready remote environments over their existing exec-server connection.
## Testing
- Add an app-server integration test covering local and remote ready, pending, disconnected, and unknown environments.
GitOrigin-RevId: 397bba603aa9e0b59008ee6cb7cbde46e357652c
## What changed
- Add an optional `emittedAtMs` field to server notification envelopes and expose the envelope in the generated JSON and TypeScript schemas.
- Populate the Unix timestamp when app-server emits a notification, before transport routing, so every connection in a fan-out receives the same value.
- Keep the field optional for clients decoding notifications from older app-server versions.
## Testing
- Verify notification serialization includes `emittedAtMs`.
- Verify targeted fan-out reuses one timestamp across connections.
GitOrigin-RevId: b379cb11e8e91c558bcd3d46ce459311a6e81e54
## Why
Standalone web search can return structured result DTOs separately from its
model-facing text output. App-server clients need access to that data without
coupling Codex to every result type or field.
## What changed
- Preserve the optional `results` array from `/v1/alpha/search` as opaque JSON
through web-search completion events, thread history, and app-server
`webSearch` items.
- Keep responses from older endpoints compatible when `results` is absent, and
allow clients to ignore result types and fields they do not understand.
- Regenerate the protocol schemas and TypeScript definitions for the optional
field.
## Testing
- Cover responses with missing, empty, and forward-compatible result payloads.
- Verify standalone web-search results round-trip through app-server item
notifications and thread-item conversion.
GitOrigin-RevId: 739ef5694ece5733f7b8749ec41d6bfa3f33c8c5
## What changed
- Add an optional `source` selector to `externalAgentConfig/detect`, while preserving the existing behavior for omitted, `null`, and unrecognized values.
- Pass `claude-code` as the source for TUI detection and import requests.
- Move source-specific migration behavior behind an adapter boundary and consolidate session migration into `codex-external-agent-migration`.
## Testing
- Cover explicit, omitted, and unknown detection source values with app-server protocol tests.
- Add unit coverage for the extracted migration and hook helpers.
GitOrigin-RevId: 63bd3dcb485f3ad7bd996022db4e351506aeea77
## What changed
- Add optional serialized Codex turn metadata to extension tool calls.
- Populate it from the current turn context and send it as the
`x-codex-turn-metadata` header on standalone web search requests.
## Testing
- Extend the app-server web search integration test to verify that client
metadata, including the model ID, reaches the standalone search request.
GitOrigin-RevId: c0950108d89a1d317ac94ccd23efcee72fffc6f0
## Why
OAuth metadata discovery for an optional HTTP MCP server can stall, delaying
`thread/start` even though that server is not required.
## What changed
- Remove eager MCP authentication-status discovery from session and connection
manager startup.
- When an MCP connection reports an authentication error, inspect configured and
stored credentials locally to preserve login and reauthentication failure
reasons without making another discovery request.
- Continue using server configuration directly for startup error messages and
timeout hints.
## Testing
Add an app-server regression test with an optional HTTP MCP endpoint that accepts
a connection but never responds, and verify that `thread/start` completes without
waiting for its configured startup timeout.
GitOrigin-RevId: 56fe0188cc1ceaf746b0b65e8b7dd1fd2e13420d
## Why
`Max` and `Ultra` consume usage limits faster than standard reasoning levels, so they should not be selected accidentally while navigating the normal effort scale.
## What changed
- Move `Max` and `Ultra` behind a `More reasoning…` entry with a dedicated warning and descriptions.
- Keep the reasoning shortcuts from silently increasing into advanced efforts.
- Apply `Ultra` to the active conversation without changing defaults for new threads, while preserving it across mode switches and thread resumes.
- Record applied thread settings in thread metadata, including explicit clearing of reasoning effort, so resumed threads restore their latest model settings unless the user supplied an override.
## Testing
- Add TUI coverage for the advanced picker, shortcuts, Plan mode, configuration defaults, and resumed conversations.
- Add app-server and thread-store coverage for persisting, clearing, and restoring model and reasoning settings.

## What changed
- Carry newly installed or updated remote plugin metadata through effective-plugin refresh callbacks, including coalesced refreshes.
- After a successful refresh, record the current hook hashes for listed workspace plugins associated with the active account while preserving existing hook settings and unrelated state.
- Serialize the background trust write with config mutations, and leave hooks untrusted if the write fails or the active account changes.
## Testing
- Cover eligible plugin selection and escaped hook config keys.
- Verify end-to-end trust for newly materialized plugin hooks, preservation of existing config, and fail-closed behavior when config cannot be written.

## What changed
- Add `supports_reasoning_summary_parameter` to model metadata, defaulting to
`true` for backward compatibility.
- Omit `reasoning.summary` and its summary-delivery stream option when the
selected model does not support the parameter.
- Apply the capability of the final selected model when a spawned agent uses a
different model.
## Testing
- Cover unsupported models in regular requests and spawned-agent model
overrides.

## What changed
- Prioritize the GPT-5.6 Sol, Terra, and Luna variants ahead of GPT-5.5 and GPT-5.4 in the static Amazon Bedrock catalog, making Sol the default.
- Use each GPT-5.6 variant's bundled description and default reasoning level while retaining Bedrock's `max` reasoning support.
## Testing
- Update model-provider and app-server tests to cover catalog ordering, variant metadata, and provider-aware fallback to GPT-5.6 Sol.
GitOrigin-RevId: 1761390254deae47b62c043b1ba707c384cde5e9
## What changed
- Stop the TUI and app server from inspecting existing sessions at startup to
set `personality = "pragmatic"` automatically.
- Remove the migration marker, helper APIs, and associated tests.
GitOrigin-RevId: 9e963bf113aff21651696bbc463f2749ac0f510a
## What changed
- Add optional `scheduledTasks` metadata to `plugin/read` responses for remote
plugins, including hourly, daily, weekday, and weekly schedules.
- Preserve the distinction between unavailable metadata (`null`) and a catalog
response containing no scheduled tasks (`[]`). Local plugin details return
`null`.
- Export the corresponding Rust, JSON Schema, and TypeScript protocol types.
## Testing
- Cover scheduled-task deserialization and propagation through `plugin/read`.
- Verify missing and empty remote metadata remain distinct.
GitOrigin-RevId: 7af223ed0a1bf6d8f054293084a73f34c6d0332d
## What changed
- Add an optional `started_at` Unix timestamp to `TurnCompleteEvent` and
`TurnAbortedEvent`.
- Populate the timestamp from turn timing state when a turn completes or is
aborted.
- Preserve the timestamp when synthesizing interrupted fork history and when
importing external sessions.
## Testing
- Verify that interrupting a turn emits a `TurnAbortedEvent` with a start
timestamp.
GitOrigin-RevId: 75b3911b95c060e5fc1843a5e293d8fe47377186
## Why
Remote environment provisioning can finish after a thread starts, before an
exec-server WebSocket URL is available.
## What changed
- Add `EnvironmentManager::register_pending_environment` and a one-shot
`PendingEnvironmentRegistration` handle that resolves to either a validated
WebSocket URL or a terminal provisioning error.
- Let lazy remote exec-server clients wait for that result, while preserving
reconnection behavior after a successful registration.
- Keep replacement registrations isolated so completing an older handle does
not resolve the current environment with the same ID.
## Testing
Add coverage for successful connection and reconnection, provisioning and
dropped-registration failures, invalid URLs, replacement isolation, and the
deferred-executor startup flow.

## What changed
- Build a reasoning payload for every Responses request and always include `reasoning.encrypted_content`.
- Remove `supports_reasoning_summaries` from model metadata and retire the `model_supports_reasoning_summaries` configuration override.
- Use configured or model-default reasoning effort without a capability gate, including for guardian reviews and tracing.

## Summary
- discover enabled-plugin marketplace sources from the user-level known
marketplace registry
- preserve scoped settings and supported Git/directory declarations,
falling back to the matching registry `installLocation` for file, URL,
npm-hosted, and inline marketplace sources
- resolve relative registry materialization paths against the
external-agent home
- reuse the existing marketplace add and plugin install flow during
import
- emit `plugin_not_found` tracing and analytics with plugin and
marketplace identity
## Why
Enabled plugins can remain in settings after their marketplace source
has moved into the user-level registry. Import detection previously
skipped those plugins because it only consulted settings-defined
marketplace sources.
## Impact
`/import` can now restore those marketplaces and install their enabled
plugins through the normal plugin installer, including npm, Git, and
local plugin sources. Missing plugins remain visible in import results
and the plugin-install failure analytics stream.
## Why
A thread resumed without an explicit reviewer could pick up the reviewer
from the current config instead of preserving the reviewer already in
use by the thread. After an app restart, this meant a thread running
with auto review could silently switch back to user review, and the next
turn could continue under the wrong reviewer.
## What changed
Persist the effective reviewer with each turn and restore the latest
persisted value when the thread resumes. If the resume request
explicitly provides a reviewer, that value still takes precedence.
## Test plan
- Added a regression test that starts a thread with auto review, records
a turn, restarts with user review in config, resumes without an
override, and verifies that auto review is preserved.
- `just test -p codex-protocol`
- `just test -p codex-state`
- `just test -p codex-rollout`
- `just test -p codex-app-server
thread_resume_preserves_persisted_approvals_reviewer`
- Clippy for the affected crates
## Why
Macrobenchmarks benefit from having a way to exercise remote-executor
latency without depending on Docker.
This is a very minimal first cut, if we find that simulating network
conditions is useful we can always expand this scope or switch to a more
robust network shaping approach.
## What
- add a package-local exec-server binary for Cargo and Bazel test
fixtures
- add a host-local WebSocket exec-server fixture and fixed-delay
interposer
- let TestAppServer route its auto environment through that delayed
WebSocket transport
- cover the delayed thread/start path through the public app-server API

## Why
Windows CI now places temporary and build files on the `D:` Dev Drive.
Fake rollout metadata still stored `/` as its working directory, but `/`
is drive-relative on Windows. When the migrated auto-environment tests
resumed or listed those rollouts, the fixture resolved to `D:\` while
the established test expectation remained `C:\`, causing unrelated PRs
to fail the Windows app-server shard.
This follows the interaction between #31357, which moved CI build paths
to the Dev Drive, and #31614, which migrated these app-server tests to
automatic environments.
## What
- Construct fake rollout working directories with `test_path_buf("/")`,
producing a fully qualified native path on Windows while preserving `/`
on Unix.
- Use the same native test-path helper for the legacy
conversation-summary expectation.
## How to Test
Automated tests were intentionally not run locally at request; the
app-server suite was stopped during compilation. `just fmt` completed
successfully.
To verify the regression on a Windows runner:
1. Configure `TEMP` and `TMP` on a non-`C:` drive, as CI does with the
Dev Drive.
2. Run `just test -p codex-app-server`.
3. Confirm the existing thread list, read, and resume tests no longer
report `D:\` actual versus `C:\` expected paths.
This is a test-fixture-only change, so there is no product smoke path.
## Why
We should be running as many integrations tests as possible against the
split cross-OS configuration.
## What
- migrate eligible thread starts and builders to auto env
- keep explicit custom/local-executor cases local with rationale
comments
- keep auto-env coverage where possible and add narrow `TODO(anp)` skips
for fixtures that are not target-native yet
## Summary
- sanitize Claude-derived fallback titles without changing explicit
custom or generated source titles
- recognize known leading control wrappers, including `ide_opened_file`,
`ide_selection`, `local-command-stdout`, and `local-command-stderr`
- skip separate control-only user records and use the next meaningful
user message as the fallback title
- use `Imported session` only when every user record is control-only
- preserve raw imported messages, previews, and transcript provenance
unchanged
## Why
Sessions without an explicit source title fall back to user-message
content. Claude metadata can arrive as separate leading user records, so
stripping only the first record still exposed raw control markup or
produced an unhelpful fallback.
## Impact
Imported chats now receive readable fallback titles such as `Fix auth
flow`, while the original wrapper-bearing messages remain visible in the
imported transcript.
## Validation
- `just test -p codex-external-agent-sessions` — 37 tests passed
- `just test -p codex-app-server

integration test passed
- `just fix -p codex-external-agent-sessions`
- `just fix -p codex-app-server`
- `just bazel-lock-check`
- `just fmt`
## Summary
- Promote code_mode_host to stable and enable it by default.
- Preserve features.code_mode_host = false as an opt-out to the
in-process runtime.
- Run core code-mode tests through the standalone host.
- Keep explicit coverage for missing-host failures.
## Why
Finish the TestAppServer builder migration after every caller has moved
off the compatibility constructors.
## What
- remove the obsolete public TestAppServer constructors
- leave TestAppServer::builder() as the only fixture construction API
## Validation
- cargo check -p codex-app-server --tests

3. this PR
## Description
This PR moves review-mode markers onto canonical `TurnItem` lifecycle:
- `TurnItem::EnteredReviewMode`
- `TurnItem::ExitedReviewMode`
Core now emits `ItemStarted` / `ItemCompleted` for both. The completed
items map back into the existing `EnteredReviewMode` /
`ExitedReviewMode` events, so raw core event consumers and legacy
rollout persistence keep seeing the old events.
This is the compatibility layer needed before paginated rollouts persist
review markers as `ItemCompleted(TurnItem)`.
## Why
Review markers were one of the remaining app-server thread items created
directly from legacy events. Giving them canonical items lets paginated
history persist stable turn/item IDs without changing legacy rollouts.
## What changed
- Added canonical review-mode `TurnItem`s and switched review flow to
emit their lifecycle.
- Added completed-item → legacy review event mappings with stable
turn/item IDs.
- Switched app-server live notifications to the generic canonical item
path and kept legacy replay compatible with old payloads.
- Updated `ThreadHistoryBuilder` to replay canonical review items even
though review turns still do not emit `TurnStarted`.
## Description
This PR migrates standalone web search onto the extension-owned
turn-item path introduced in #31283.
Standalone web search now emits `ExtensionItem::WebSearch` through
generic `TurnItem::Extension`, while app-server still exposes the
existing typed `ThreadItem::WebSearch` JSON shape. Hosted Responses API
web search stays on core-owned `TurnItem::WebSearch`.
## What changed
- Added `web_search::WebSearchItem` and `WebSearchAction` to
`codex-extension-items` under the stable `web.search` kind.
- Collapsed `ExtensionTurnItem` to generic `{ item, legacy_events }` now
that no typed extension special cases remain.
- Kept the existing `WebSearchBegin` / `WebSearchEnd` compatibility
events and canonical-first ordering.
- Updated app-server projection/history and generated TypeScript; the
app-server JSON schema is unchanged.
## Description
This PR adds a `codex-extension-items` crate for extension-owned
`TurnItem` schemas, and updates standalone image generation to start
using it via `TurnItem::Extension`.
This gives us a way to prevent Core from having to be aware of all
extension items. App-server still exposes the existing public
`ThreadItem::ImageGeneration` shape, now by wrapping the same shared
`image_generation::ImageGenerationItem` type.
The new `codex-extension-items` crate is necessary because the image gen
extension item is used by:
- `codex-image-generation-extension`, which produces it.
- `codex-tools / core`, which carry it generically.
- `codex-protocol`, which serializes it into lifecycle events and
rollouts.
- `app-server protocol`, which wraps it in public
`ThreadItem::ImageGeneration`
```
extension implementation
↓
codex-extension-items
↓
protocol / tools / app-server
```
We keep the hosted Responses API image generation as
`TurnItem::ImageGeneration` because core still owns its persistence and
legacy fanout.
### Before
Standalone image generation is implemented as an extension, but its item
representation previously lived in the core protocol. This sets the
precedent that core is aware of all extension items, which would be good
to avoid.
```
image-gen extension
→ constructs codex_protocol::ImageGenerationItem
→ emits ExtensionTurnItem::ImageGeneration
→ core matches ImageGeneration specially
→ protocol stores TurnItem::ImageGeneration
```
### After
```
image-gen extension
→ constructs extension-owned ImageGenerationItem
→ emits generic ExtensionItem
→ core transports/persists it generically
→ app-server wraps ImageGenerationItem as ThreadItem::ImageGeneration
```
Future extension items can have typed app-server APIs without adding a
new `TurnItem` variant, `ExtensionTurnItem` variant, or core emitter
match arm.
## What changed
- Added `codex-extension-items` with the closed `ExtensionItem` enum and
shared `image_generation::ImageGenerationItem` schema.
- Added generic `TurnItem::Extension(ExtensionItem)` and
`ExtensionTurnItem::Extension { item, legacy_events }` paths.
- Updated standalone image generation to emit a typed extension item and
provide its existing legacy `ImageGenerationBegin` /
`ImageGenerationEnd` events explicitly.
- Kept canonical lifecycle ordering: core emits `ItemStarted` /
`ItemCompleted` before extension-provided legacy events.
## Follow-up
Standalone web search still uses its typed special-case path. Migrating
it later would let `ExtensionTurnItem` collapse into a single
extension-item struct.
## Summary
External auth had two paths: provider-command credentials were resolved
through `ExternalAuth`, while app-provided ChatGPT credentials were
installed separately and only used the provider for refresh.
`ExternalAuth` also declared an auth mode independently from the
`CodexAuth` value it returned, so the declaration and credentials could
disagree.
This change makes the provider-owned `CodexAuth` authoritative for
initial resolution, credential kind, and refresh.
- remove `ExternalAuth::auth_mode` and require providers to return their
current auth from `resolve`
- route external auth registration, resolution, and unauthorized refresh
through `AuthManager::set_external_auth`
- keep the last resolved credential with its provider so synchronous
consumers and unauthorized recovery observe the credential's actual mode
- make the app-server bridge own both initial and refreshed ChatGPT
credentials, and detach it on logout
- keep model listing free of auth-refresh side effects, including in
offline mode
Provider-command auth still follows its configured cache interval.
App-provided ChatGPT auth still asks the parent app once after a `401`
and retries the request once.
Stacked on #31355.
## Testing
- `just test -p codex-login`
- `just test -p codex-models-manager`
- focused `codex-app-server` tests for external login/logout,
unauthorized refresh, and workspace mismatch
## Why
Test callers need one composable way to create app-server fixtures
instead of a growing family of overlapping constructor implementations.
## What
- add a feature-complete TestAppServer::builder()
- make the default builder own a temporary CODEX_HOME and select the
automatic test environment
- expose builder knobs for no automatic environment, explicit
CODEX_HOME, program, arguments, plugin startup tasks, environment
overrides, managed config, and JSON logging
- keep the existing public constructor surface, but route every
constructor through the builder so the new path is exercised immediately
- remove the redundant private constructor ladders; caller migration and
public constructor removal live in the optional cleanup stack
## Validation
- just test -p codex-app-server (940/941 before updating the expected
builder error wording)
- just test -p codex-app-server

## What
Adds an optional hosted login-success redirect path for app-server login
requests.
- Keeps the existing localhost success page as the default.
- Lets app-server callers opt into a hosted success page with an
optional protocol field.
- Persists credentials before redirecting to the hosted success page.
- Keeps org setup and existing CLI/device-code login flows on the local
success page.
- Accepts an optional typed `appBrand` value and forwards it to the
hosted page as `app_brand` so web can select the correct asset.
- Generates the app-server protocol schema updates for the new optional
fields.
## Why
This supports the hosted Codex login success page rollout without
changing existing login behavior by default. The Codex Apps frontend can
gate the opt-in with Statsig after the hosted web page.
## Rollout safety
- Old callers omit the new field and continue using localhost.
- New callers talking to old app-server builds remain safe because the
Codex Apps side treats the field as optional and defaults the flag off.
- Missing brand values default to Codex.
- The hosted redirect always uses the app-login source so the hosted
page can reopen Codex; the existing streamlined-login visual flag
remains separate.
## Validation
- `just fmt`
- `just fix -p codex-login -p codex-app-server-protocol -p
codex-app-server -p codex-app-server-test-client -p codex-tui`
- `just test -p codex-login`
- `just test -p codex-app-server-protocol`
- `just write-app-server-schema`
- `git diff HEAD --check`
The focused login and protocol run passed all 380 tests.
I also started the broader `just test -p codex-app-server`; it compiled
successfully, then many tests failed on this machine because spawned
test servers tried to use the ambient `/Users/rafaelj/.codex/sqlite`
state DB, which is read-only in this sandbox. I stopped that run after
confirming the failures shared that environment issue.
## Summary
- Adds `writes` to `AppToolApproval` and exposes it through config and
app-server schemas, including
`[apps._default].default_tools_approval_mode`.
- In `writes`, tools with `readOnlyHint = true` skip approval; all other
tools prompt, including non-destructive writes and tools without
annotations.
- Prevents session or persistent approval choices in this mode so later
writes still prompt.
## Why
`auto` only prompts for risk-hinted actions, while `prompt` also
interrupts reads. Apps need a middle mode that gates writes without
prompting for declared read-only actions.

## Why
Now that basic cross-OS app/exec support is wired up, it's time to clean
up the tech debt of the remote_env_windows test and make sure its test
logic is covered in more maintainable feature-specific tests.
## What
- Add focused app-server tests for target-native `AGENTS.md` sources and
content, plus shell and cwd context, while preserving explicit TODO
baselines for the remaining host-scoped metadata.
- Add a `TestAppServer` helper that waits for and returns the matching
typed turn completion.
- Remove redundant app-server coverage and dependencies from
`remote_env_windows` while retaining its exec and apply-patch smoke
coverage. A follow-up will remove these.
## Validation
- `just test -p codex-app-server`
- `bazel test //codex-rs/app-server:app-server-all-wine-exec-test
--test_output=errors`
- `bazel test //codex-rs/core/tests/remote_env_windows:smoke-test
--test_output=errors`
## Summary
- Add `PluginInstallPolicySource` to the app-server v2 `PluginSummary`
payload.
- Propagate remote `installation_policy_source` through plugin
summaries, details, installed-plugin caching, and app-server responses.
- Preserve the supported source values and map unrecognized backend
values to `null`.
- Return `null` for local plugins and expose the field in generated JSON
and TypeScript schemas.
- Update app-server API documentation and plugin list/read coverage.
## Testing
- `just test -p codex-app-server-protocol` (251 passed)
- Targeted `codex-app-server` plugin list, installed, and read tests (4
passed)
- Targeted `codex-core-plugins` known and unknown policy source tests (2

## Why
A realtime session can end after more transcript has accumulated than
was included in its last handoff. That tail already lives in core's
active transcript state, but the stop path aborted the realtime
input/fanout tasks before routing it, so the final bit of the
conversation could disappear before `thread/realtime/closed`.
This behavior is still being evaluated, so clients must opt in per
realtime session. Omitted or false leaves shutdown behavior unchanged.
## What changed
- Add optional `flushTranscriptTailOnSessionEnd` to
`thread/realtime/start`, defaulting to false in app-server.
- Expose an idempotent `take_transcript_tail()` from the existing active
transcript state using `last_handoff_entry_count`.
- When enabled, let shutdown cancel the input owner cleanly and publish
at most one final existing `<realtime_delegation>` with the remaining
text in `<transcript_delta>`.
- Have the existing fanout drain already-parsed events before routing
that final delegation, so a queued handoff wins first and is not
duplicated in the tail.
- Flush realtime shutdown before ordinary session task abort during core
cleanup.

## Why
Supported clients currently receive only a reset-credit count from
`account/rateLimits/read`. The redemption UI and other app-server
clients need each available credit's expiry and ID so they can explain
what will expire and consume the credit a user selected. This
information belongs on the existing rate-limit read surface rather than
a second app-server list RPC that clients would need to coordinate.
## What changed
- extend `rateLimitResetCredits` on `account/rateLimits/read` with
nullable `credits` detail rows
- fetch usage and reset-credit details concurrently; if the detail
request fails, times out, or cannot be parsed, preserve the usage
response and return `credits: null`
- expose each credit's ID, reset type, status, grant time, expiry time,
title, and description
- add an optional nullable `creditId` to
`account/rateLimitResetCredit/consume`; omitting it preserves the
existing automatic-selection behavior
- forward a selected credit ID to the Codex backend and update the
app-server documentation and generated schemas
The TUI consumer is stacked in #30488.
## Validation
- `just test -p codex-app-server-protocol` (251 passed)

Part of #29618.
## Why
App-server initialization captures exec-policy parse warnings only once.
Each `thread/start` then reloads config for that thread's cwd and
rereads its `.rules` files, so rules that become malformed after
initialization—or belong to a different project—are dropped without a
fresh warning to the requesting client.
## What changed
- Validate exec-policy rules against the freshly loaded per-thread
config during `thread/start`.
- Send the existing structured `configWarning` only to the connection
that requested the thread.
- Preserve nonfatal startup and avoid repeating an identical warning
already delivered during initialization.
This is intentionally separate from the TUI `legacy_core` cleanup in
#31179 and the managed-requirements fallback fix in #31188.
## Why
Generic plugin guidance is currently emitted only with initial context
from host plugin state. An executor-selected plugin can become available
later in the same turn, making its skills and tools usable without ever
telling the model how plugin capabilities should be used.
## What
- project every ready selected plugin package, including skill-only
plugins
- carry plugin availability with the exact MCP runtime projection while
preserving MCP manager reuse when servers and connectors are unchanged
- move generic plugin guidance from the static initial-context path into
persisted World State
- recognize legacy and retained plugin fragments so resume and
compaction do not duplicate guidance
