xl-openai 379cb68444 Add dynamic HTTP header helpers for MCP servers (#38245)
## What changed

- Add `http_headers_helper` configuration for local streamable HTTP MCP servers. The configured shell command runs once per connection and returns a JSON object of headers that is cached across requests.
- Apply helper headers to MCP startup and OAuth flows while restricting them to the server origin, stopping redirects, rejecting reserved or duplicate headers, and enforcing output and execution limits.
- Reject helpers for remote or managed-disabled servers, use the local environment working directory, and redact helper commands from `codex mcp list` and `codex mcp get` output.

## Testing

- Cover configuration validation, helper lifecycle and output parsing, origin isolation, OAuth discovery and token refresh, managed requirements, environment selection, and CLI redaction.

stevenlee-oai 285abc0368 Configure PSP routing through the feature system (#38056)
## What changed

- Add the under-development `psp` feature and expose it in the config schema.
- Use the feature to attach the PSP cookie to first-party ChatGPT clients.
- Remove the hidden `--psp` flag and its process-scoped configuration plumbing.
- Preserve configured ChatGPT cookies when creating the PSP client used for GET and POST requests.

## Testing

- Update the config manager service test to verify that enabling `features.psp` retains the setting in the effective config and configures the expected ChatGPT cookie.

knittel-openai 9e301c8c9a Add configurable Responses API request metadata (#37895)
## What changed

- Add `responses_api_metadata` for product-owned key/value metadata included in
every Responses API turn metadata payload, including parent and subagent
  requests.
- Limit the map to 16 entries, ASCII identifier keys of at most 64 bytes, and
values of at most 128 bytes. Reject reserved Codex metadata keys and ignore
  this setting in project-local configuration.
- Give configured product metadata precedence over app-server client metadata
while keeping it out of metadata sent to external MCP servers.

## Testing

- Cover reserved-key validation, metadata precedence, MCP isolation, and
propagation to parent and subagent Responses API requests.

Eric Traut a9dee37f9c Add configurable goal token budget limits (#37878)
## What changed

- Add `goals.max_goal_token_budget` as a positive-integer configuration setting.
- Use the configured maximum as the default budget for new goals and when `tokenBudget` is reset to `null`.
- Reject goal creation and updates whose token budget exceeds the configured maximum, including requests through goal tools and `thread/goal/set`.
- Respect managed configuration precedence and per-thread configuration overrides.

## Testing

- Cover configuration parsing and managed overrides.
- Cover defaulting, resetting, and rejecting oversized budgets through the goal service, goal tools, and app-server API.

Charlie Marsh c9c6c0daa9 Add a feature flag to preserve apply_patch line endings (#37758)
## What changed

- Add the `apply_patch_preserve_line_endings` feature, disabled by default, to
preserve CRLF, CR, and mixed line endings when `apply_patch` updates files.
- Apply the feature consistently to built-in patch handling and patches invoked
through shell, user-shell, unified-exec, and app-server command execution.
- Keep the active feature configuration authoritative over inherited, shell
  snapshot, and client-provided environment values.

## Testing

- Cover line-ending behavior with the feature enabled and disabled for custom
tool calls, shell heredocs, command execution, and the `apply_patch` CLI.

Won Park c2bcb9a26b Reuse parent compactions in Guardian review sessions (#37513)
## What changed

- Add the under-development `guardian_reuse_parent_compaction` feature.
- Restart Guardian review sessions after parent history rewrites and seed them with the latest encrypted compaction that has a response item ID.
- Keep the existing reviewer when a rewritten history has no reusable compaction, preserving authorization and restriction context held by that session.

## Testing

- Cover reuse-key invalidation and compaction eligibility.
- Verify review-session behavior across parent compaction and a subsequent summary-free history reset.

pakrym-oai 509565820f Interrupt active code-mode cells with their turn (#37483)
## Why

Interrupting a turn should also stop code-mode work that the turn left running.

## What changed

- Add the disabled-by-default `code_mode_interrupt` feature.
- When an interrupted turn has the feature enabled, terminate all active code-mode cells and propagate cancellation through nested tool calls.
- Keep the reusable code-mode session alive so its stored state remains available to later turns.

## Testing

Add an integration test that interrupts a long-running nested tool, verifies that active and background cells are removed, and confirms that session state is preserved.

tongzhou wang 248d8c0e22 Include call IDs in MCP requests and clarify metadata config (#37477)
## What changed

- Add the tool call ID to `_meta.callId` for every MCP tool request.
- Rename `features.tool_registry.include_tool_metadata` to
  `features.tool_registry.turn_metadata_includes_tool_info` to clarify that the
setting controls authoritative tool information in per-turn metadata.
- Update config parsing, schema generation, and session config locking for the
  renamed setting.

## Testing

- Cover `callId` metadata for custom, plugin, and Codex Apps MCP calls.
- Update strict-config, config-loading, feature-config, and config-lock tests for
  the renamed setting.

jif 85e0661c3b Cap project instructions across environments (#37424)
## Why

Applying `project_doc_max_bytes` independently to every selected environment
allows the total project instruction payload to grow with the number of
environments.

## What changed

Treat `project_doc_max_bytes` as one shared byte budget. Consume it in selected
environment order, truncate the entry that reaches the remaining limit, and
skip later environments once the budget is exhausted.

Update the configuration descriptions to document the aggregate limit.

## Testing

Add unit and integration coverage for partial and exhausted budgets across
multiple environments.

Owen Lin 4bb7ee3472 Add rollout migration tooling and background migration (#37348)
## What changed

- Add `codex migrate-rollouts` with dry-run inspection by default, explicit `--apply`, thread filtering, optional I/O throttling, progress output, and JSON or verbose reports.
- Add the disabled-by-default `background_paginated_rollout_migration` feature to migrate legacy local sessions at startup before rollout compression begins.
- Persist a migration cursor and skipped-file fingerprints so later startups avoid full rescans while retrying changed files and recovering pending migrations.
- Coordinate migration with live writers and emit metrics for manual and startup runs.

## Testing

- Cover startup cursor advancement and lookback, pending migration recovery, live-writer coordination, changed empty rollouts, and progress reporting.

Boyang Niu 69b6152c17 Track context windows per agent (#37347)
## Why

Forked subagents can inherit a parent's compacted history, but their context-window metadata needs to identify the child and start a distinct window lineage.

## What changed

- Always identify context windows by agent name and remove the `features.token_budget.mode` setting.
- Persist the agent path in world state and emit context-window metadata as a standalone developer message when the identity changes.
- Reset inherited compaction metadata to the forked subagent's initial context window and restore that window in session state.

## Testing

Extend the full-history subagent test to verify parent and child world-state snapshots, agent identities, distinct window IDs, and the reset child checkpoint.

tongzhou wang 51c9ed6d4f Add per-surface MCP tool exposure controls (#36781)
## Why

MCP tools can be exposed directly, discovered through tool search, or called
from Code Mode. Servers need to be able to opt out of any of these surfaces
without disabling their tools everywhere.

## What changed

- Add `omit_tools_from` to MCP server configuration, accepting any combination
  of `direct`, `deferred`, and `code_mode`.
- Apply the exclusions independently when building direct, deferred, and Code
Mode tool surfaces while keeping omitted tools registered for permitted uses.
- Remove client-private `_meta` fields from MCP results returned to Code Mode.
- Include the new setting in the configuration schema and MCP config
  serialization.

## Testing

- Cover every exposure combination across Code Mode, Code-Mode-only sessions,
tool search, direct-only namespaces, and prefixed and unprefixed MCP names.
- Verify direct and nested execution paths, parallel-call support, config
  round-tripping, and `_meta` filtering.

- Route chords through the active TUI context, show pending and configured chord hints, and cancel pending chords on `esc`, context changes, or a one-second timeout.
- Extend `/keymap` to capture, add, replace, and display key chords.
- Reject chords that conflict with active single-key bindings, overlapping-context chords, or reserved terminal shortcuts.

## Testing

- Enable the standalone `web.run` tool for opted-in custom Responses providers when web search is enabled and the runtime provider supports it.
- Send standalone search requests through the custom provider's endpoint and authentication.

## Testing

- Cover opt-in, default-off, disabled-search, and unsupported-provider behavior.
- Verify custom-provider search request routing and authorization through the app server.

Abhinav ee71c4a90f Enforce exact values from managed config requirements (#34597)
## What changed

- Apply managed values for `sqlite_home`, `log_dir`, `model_catalog_json`,
  `check_for_update_on_startup`, `allow_login_shell`, the report-submission
opt-in, and `windows.sandbox_private_desktop` to the runtime configuration,
with source-aware warnings when they override configured values.
- Expose these values through `configRequirements/read`, return them from
`config/read`, include them in session config locks, and show their sources in
  the TUI config debug view.
- Reject app-server writes that overlap an exact managed requirement with
`configRequirementReadonly` while leaving unrelated sibling keys writable.

## Testing

- Cover runtime overrides, requirement API mapping, config reads and writes,
session lock serialization, cross-platform path URIs, and debug output.

Abhinav 7442f5f932 Add keyed shell environment policy filters (#34590)
## What changed

- Add `shell_environment_policy.filters`, mapping environment-variable patterns to `include` or `exclude`, while continuing to accept the legacy `exclude` and `include_only` arrays.
- Merge filter keys case-insensitively across config layers so higher-precedence entries can override individual patterns. Switching representations replaces the other representation instead of combining them.
- Reject mixed, duplicate, or malformed filter definitions in enabled layers, config writes, and reloads, while retaining the previous session configuration when a reload is invalid.
- Make config-manager reads and writes representation-aware and preserve existing formatting when updating individual policy values.

## Testing

Add coverage for parsing, schema constraints, layered merging, validation and diagnostics, config writes, override metadata, and invalid session reloads.

pakrym-oai 99efeef650 Add buffered code-mode exec yields (#34441)
## What changed

- Add the experimental `code_mode_buffered_exec` feature.
- When enabled, default code-mode `exec` calls without an explicit
`yield_time_ms` to 30 seconds instead of 10 seconds.
- Report the effective default in the model-visible `exec` tool description.

## Testing

- Verify that the generated tool description advertises the 30-second default
  when the feature is enabled.

jif 687f05cb94 Remove CSV-backed agent jobs (#34413)
## What changed

- Remove the `spawn_agents_on_csv` and `report_agent_job_result` tools and their agent-job runtime and state models.
- Drop the legacy `agent_jobs` and `agent_job_items` tables during state database migration.
- Keep `features.enable_fanout` and `agents.job_max_runtime_seconds` accepted as no-op compatibility settings while omitting them from the generated configuration schema.

## Testing

- Verify upgrades remove both legacy agent-job tables.
- Verify the removed feature and configuration keys still parse without taking effect.

Andrei Eternal e4836f998d Add configurable hook context spill limits (#34393)
## What changed

- Add `additionalContextLimit` to command hook configuration for events that can emit `additionalContext`.
- Apply the limit independently to each hook's context before it is sent to the model. Unset values retain the 2,500-token default, while `0` disables spilling for that hook.
- Expose configured limits through app-server hook and requirements responses, and show them in the TUI hooks browser.

## Testing

- Cover JSON and TOML parsing, discovery and hashing, per-hook spilling behavior, app-server responses, and TUI rendering.

Anais Killian 2895d82b5e Let users remember the working directory for resumed sessions (#33950)
## What changed

- Add `tui.resume_cwd` with `current` and `session` modes for resume and fork flows.
- Let users persist either mode directly from the working-directory prompt, while preserving one-time choices when no preference is configured.
- Apply the preference consistently during startup and in-app resume, honor explicit `--cd` overrides, and reject unsupported or unavailable directory choices with a clear error.

## Testing

- Cover configuration parsing and persistence, prompt behavior, startup and in-app flows, session metadata fallback, and remote workspace constraints.

Abhinav 7bd44085e1 Add SessionEnd hooks for thread teardown (#33895)
## What changed

- Add the `SessionEnd` hook event to hook configuration, protocol schemas, analytics, and the hooks browser.
- Run matching hooks for root threads during shutdown, including app-server archive, delete, idle unload, and graceful shutdown. Flush the transcript first and provide the session ID, transcript path, working directory, and `reason: "other"`.
- Keep teardown bounded: hook output is advisory, the default timeout is one second, configured timeouts are capped at three seconds, and async hooks run synchronously with a warning.

## Testing

- Cover transcript availability, matcher selection, timeout normalization, ignored control output, subagent exclusion, archive/delete ordering, and graceful shutdown of multiple loaded threads.

Bryan Ashley 08e30a2e4e Add batched executor capability discovery (#33852)
## Why

Selected capability roots can contribute plugins, MCP servers, connectors, and
skills. Discovering each contribution separately requires repeated access to the
executor filesystem.

## What changed

- Add the `capabilityRoots/discoverV1` exec-server RPC to scan selected roots and
materialize recognized plugin manifests, configuration files, skill
instructions, and skill metadata in one bounded request.
- Add the opt-in `executor_capability_discovery` feature, with a thread-scoped
cache and per-step snapshot shared by MCP and skill discovery.
- Parse MCP, connector, and skill contributions from the materialized snapshot,
including serving cached skill instructions without another filesystem read.

## Testing

- Cover discovery limits, manifest precedence, root-local failures, cache reuse,
plugin contributions, and parity with the existing environment skill loader.

jif 21c37fb374 Honor configured model defaults for spawned agents (#33631)
## What changed

- Apply `agents.default_subagent_model` and
`agents.default_subagent_reasoning_effort` when a spawn request does not
provide explicit values, including agent job workers.
- Allow full-history forks to use configured defaults or explicit model and
reasoning-effort overrides while retaining the parent conversation context.
- Preserve the selected model and reasoning effort when an agent role does not
  override them.

## Testing

- Cover configured defaults, explicit override precedence, full-history forks,
role application, and agent job workers.

jif 9ff47868eb Expose spawn agent types only when roles are configured (#33572)
## Why

The `agent_type` argument is only useful when agent roles are configured. Avoid
advertising an inapplicable override in the model-visible `spawn_agent` schema.

## What changed

- Include `agent_type` in the V1 and V2 spawn tools only when configured roles
  are available.
- Clarify that `agent_type` is an explicit override and document its interaction
  with context forking.
- Remove the unused `agents.support_agent_type` configuration field.

## Testing

- Add coverage for hiding `agent_type` without roles and exposing it when a role
  is configured.

jif 03bb3b1236 Unify multi-agent settings under agents (#33550)
## What changed

- Add `agents.enabled` as a user override for multi-agent tools while keeping an enabled `features.multi_agent_v2` authoritative.
- Rename the shared spawned-thread limit to `agents.max_concurrent_threads_per_session`, retain `agents.max_threads` as an alias, and apply the setting to both multi-agent backends.
- Add reserved subagent model, reasoning effort, and agent-type settings to the config surface and persist all resolved agent settings in config locks.
- Show the resolved `[agents]` values in TUI debug-config output.

## Testing

- Cover config loading, legacy alias normalization across merged layers, backend-selection precedence, V2 concurrency, and debug output.

## What changed

- Add a feature-gated `MEMORY` migration item to the app-server protocol and TUI.
- Discover project memory Markdown files, preserve their project scope, and copy selected projects into the Codex memory extension workspace.
- Detect changed, renamed, and removed source projects, report per-project import failures, and enqueue memory consolidation after workspace changes.

## Testing

- Cover memory discovery, selection, synchronization, scope validation, feature gating, protocol results, and TUI rendering.
