bullman-oai 44984d2081 Retry realtime sideband attachment while an existing call activates (#51460)
## Why

Instant Connect can return a call ID before ICE activates the call, causing sideband attachment to briefly fail with HTTP `404` while the client connects media.

## What changed

Retry `404` responses from `connect_existing_call_sideband` up to three times, waiting 100, 300, and 800 milliseconds. Return the error once this activation retry budget is exhausted, and preserve the existing handling of other errors.

## Testing

Add WebSocket coverage for successful attachment after three `404` responses, failure after four `404` responses, and no retry on HTTP `410`. Verify that successful attachment does not overwrite the prepared session configuration.

pakrym-oai c9253c4977 Send base instructions as Responses input messages (#51156)
## What changed

Move base instructions from the top-level `instructions` field into a prefixed `developer` message in `input` for standard Responses requests, matching Responses Lite. Remove the field from HTTP and WebSocket request types and assign instruction messages stable IDs derived from the thread and instruction text.

## Testing

Extend standard and Responses Lite tests to cover instruction message serialization, stable IDs, and resume consistency. Update WebSocket tests to verify that changed instructions trigger a full request without `previous_response_id`.

Justin Beckwith ed0cc1a4ab Serialize Responses routing fields before large inputs (#49675)
## Why

Gateways that inspect request bodies incrementally need routing fields before potentially multi-megabyte prompts so they can route requests without buffering the input first.

## What changed

Serialize `model`, `stream`, and optional `service_tier` before `input` in both HTTP Responses requests and WebSocket `response.create` messages. Preserve field values and omission of unset `service_tier`.

## Testing

Add an HTTP regression test with a 2 MiB input that checks routing field order and unchanged JSON contents. Extend WebSocket serialization coverage to assert the routing fields appear first, and check that HTTP requests omit unset `service_tier`.

acrognale-oai 888e02db34 Enforce network policy throughout HTTP and WebSocket requests (#47389)
## Why

Destination restrictions and policy revocation must remain effective during redirects, response body reads, and established WebSocket traffic. Policy denials must also survive error handling so callers do not retry them or report a revoked operation as successful.

## What changed

- Route managed HTTP clients through a shared `RequestBuilder` and policy-aware execution, checking each redirect destination before route resolution and retaining a network permit while consuming response bodies.
- Guard WebSocket connection setup, reads, and writes with revocable permits, including independent wakeups for split readers and writers.
- Preserve `TransportError::Policy` through HTTP, SSE, and realtime error handling, and treat policy denials as non-retryable.
- Keep the supplied network policy in plugin startup HTTP requests and propagate response body failures from backend and plugin requests.

## Testing

Add regression coverage for rejection before connecting, revocation during redirect routing and streamed body reads, split WebSocket revocation, realtime writer error propagation, and revoked plugin upload responses.

Celia Chen 142360dac8 Honor configured proxies for realtime WebSocket connections (#47101)
## Why

Realtime WebSockets connected directly, bypassing the configured proxy policy for Voice's WebRTC sideband.

## What changed

Pass the configured `HttpClientFactory` into `RealtimeWebsocketClient` and connect through the shared `WebSocketConnector`. Add support for supplying an existing Rustls configuration to preserve custom CA handling and Windows platform trust.

## Testing

Add an integration test that enables `respect_system_proxy`, starts a WebRTC conversation, and verifies that the sideband establishes its session through an HTTP `CONNECT` proxy and closes successfully.

andrewgu-oai 888be42a20 Support explicit provider model catalog URLs (#46561)
## Why

Providers need to serve Codex model metadata independently of their inference endpoint. A custom inference `base_url` alone should not opt API-key sessions into remote catalog discovery.

## What changed

- Add `model_catalog_url` to provider configuration and thread-config serialization. Fetch the full catalog URL with provider authentication, headers, query parameters, and `client_version`, while preserving inference routing.
- Require an explicit catalog URL for API-key discovery with a custom base URL. Keep default OpenAI discovery on the Codex backend, and apply `api_key_model_discovery` gating to provider API keys and cached catalogs.
- Include the catalog URL in cache identity so different catalogs do not share cached metadata.
- Limit explicitly configured catalog responses to 1 MiB, reject redirects, and suppress URL and response diagnostics that could expose credentials.

## Testing

Add coverage for catalog configuration round-trips, query encoding, authentication and header reuse, cache identity and discovery gating, oversized responses, and redirect rejection without credential forwarding. Add an integration test verifying that catalog model metadata and instructions reach conversation requests.

felixxia-oai 78d4d983d3 Gate reasoning effort updates on explicit model support (#46530)
## Why

Using Responses Lite does not establish whether a model accepts reasoning-effort `configuration_update` items. Unsupported models need to use the selected request-level effort, including when resuming history containing saved updates.

## What changed

- Add `supports_reasoning_effort_updates` model metadata, defaulting to `false`.
- Require the override feature, an OpenAI provider, and explicit model support for reasoning effort updates, independently of `use_responses_lite`.
- Filter saved configuration updates from unsupported requests without changing persisted history.
- Clear the pinned effort baseline when sampling with an unsupported model so returning to a supported model establishes a fresh baseline. Compaction uses the selected effort without clearing the pin.

## Testing

Add coverage for supported models with either Responses mode, unsupported-model history filtering over HTTP and WebSocket, switching to an unsupported model and back, and compaction versus sampling pin behavior. Verify missing capability metadata defaults to `false`.

jif 977193486d Bound model catalog decode errors and classify request timeouts (#45928)
## Why

Model catalog decode errors can include the full response body and payload values from deserialization errors. Catalog request deadlines also report a generic timeout instead of a request timeout.

## What changed

- Report only the JSON error category, line, column, and response byte count when model catalog decoding fails.
- Return `CodexErr::RequestTimeout` when the model catalog refresh deadline expires.

## Testing

Add regression tests for invalid response shapes, large payload values, malformed and truncated JSON, and a delayed catalog response that must return `RequestTimeout`.

jif eeded5ba1a Route Guardian requests through /responses with identifying headers (#45736)
## What changed

- Replace dedicated Guardian endpoints with `/responses`, sending `x-codex-guardian: reviewer` or `x-codex-guardian: classifier` for eligible Codex backend requests over HTTP and WebSocket.
- Add model-scoped thread headers, recheck backend authentication on each request attempt, and reconnect WebSockets when the applicable headers change.
- Retain `features.guardianv2.free_guardian` for configuration compatibility while removing its routing gate; the backend now controls Guardian billing.

## Testing

Update tests for reviewer and classifier headers, model and authentication scoping, HTTP fallback, WebSocket reuse, and parent-response metadata across retries.

Benjamin Carlsson ce7fbb373b Bundle native voice runtimes in Windows releases (#44922)
## Why

Windows release packages need the voice helper and native audio libraries. Realtime TLS connections on fresh Windows installations also need platform certificate validation so Windows can retrieve missing trusted roots on demand.

## What changed

- Build and sign the voice helper and audio DLLs for Windows x64 and ARM64, bundle a pinned Microsoft CRT DLL, and verify signatures and runtime receipts before packaging.
- Add verified, pinned Cygwin and native build tools plus MSVC linker, compiler, and path handling fixes for the Windows Bazel builds.
- Include voice resources in primary release archives and WinGet packages. Preserve WinGet executable names, update manifest hashes, and recognize the package root through matching entrypoint metadata. Keep Python runtime wheels voice-free to preserve their existing Windows support floor.
- Use Windows platform TLS validation for realtime WebSockets when no custom CA bundle is configured, preserving custom CA behavior.

## Testing

Add coverage for build-input integrity and unsafe paths, signed Windows runtime assembly, WinGet file and hash preservation, package discovery, and TLS trust selection, untrusted certificate rejection, and hostname validation.

faizan-oai e3a52b87b2 Expose available access programs in model discovery (#44893)
## What changed

Carry optional `available_access_programs` metadata through model information, presets, caches, and the TUI, and expose it as `availableAccessPrograms` in app-server `model/list` responses. Update the generated JSON schemas, TypeScript types, and Python models.

Preserve the distinction between missing metadata and an empty `cyber` list. Ignore unknown cyber program names when reading the catalog so new server programs do not prevent older clients from loading it. Discovery metadata does not grant access; inference still enforces authorization.

## Testing

Add coverage for absent, null, empty, and populated metadata, unknown program names, and app-server serialization. Extend cache tests and verify that online refreshes persist changed access metadata even when the catalog ETag stays unchanged.

pmccrary-oai 6af345407d Gate experimental context by model capability at session startup (#43147)
## Why

Experimental context activation previously checked the provider and account eligibility without checking model support. Child sessions also inherited token-budget activation from their parent, even when starting fresh with a different model.

## What changed

- Add `ModelInfo.supports_experimental_context`, defaulting to `false`, and enable it for the bundled `gpt-6-astra` model. Require this capability when activating experimental context.
- Snapshot configured token-budget preferences before startup activation. Restore them for fresh child sessions before applying their starting model's defaults, while history forks retain their parent's activation.
- Pass unresolved token-budget preferences to child sessions so they can use their own model's prompts.

## Testing

Extend coverage for unsupported models, model-switch guidance under explicit and experimental activation, and child configuration from both active and inactive parents. Verify that omitted capability metadata defaults to `false`.

jif dee21ec1bc Replace Guardian tickets with parent response IDs (#43002)
## What changed

Capture the ID from `response.created` and pass it as `parent_response_id` in Guardian review and classifier request metadata. Clear the current response ID before sampling retries so tool reviews cannot inherit a failed response's ID.

Request Guardian credits with `guardian_credits_requested` on eligible parent requests. Remove the ticket protocol, transport attachment, and ticket-specific body redaction. Keep ordinary app-server client `parent_response_id` values inside `x-codex-turn-metadata` rather than promoting them to Guardian request metadata.

## Testing

Update coverage for HTTP fallback, WebSocket review reuse, missing response IDs, classifier transport retries, and code-mode yield/resume attribution. Extend app-server tests to verify client metadata placement over HTTP and WebSocket.

jif cc4b8bdeb8 Propagate response tickets to Guardian reviews (#42758)
## What changed

- Request and parse server-issued Guardian tickets for eligible Codex backend responses.
- Scope each ticket to the response that produced a Guardian review or classifier request, including HTTP and WebSocket retries, without adding it to model-visible or persisted context.
- Validate ticket shape, reserve its metadata keys, redact it from debug and request-body logging, and attach it only at the Guardian transport boundary.

## Testing

- Cover ticket parsing, endpoint and authentication routing, retry scoping, classifier retries, and redaction for compressed and uncompressed requests.

  file changes, MCP, network, and permission requests.
- Apply disabled, synchronous, or adaptive review by action category while
  preserving legacy configuration when model policy is absent.
- Bind cached risk scores to the active model policy, thread settings, and
  environment selections so outdated scores cannot approve later actions.
- Keep unknown review modes on the synchronous path and ignore unknown policy
  fields for forward compatibility.

## Testing

ashwinnathan-openai 775ef7dcc7 [codex] Support sequential cutoff reasoning summaries (#31306)
## Summary

When enabled for the OpenAI provider, Codex sends
`stream_options.reasoning_summary_delivery = "sequential_cutoff"` on
HTTP and
WebSocket requests, including prewarm, and renders completed summary
sections
from `reasoning_summary_text.done`. Flag-off and non-OpenAI behavior is
unchanged.

## Expected rollout

```text
reasoning 0 added
summary 0 done
summary 1 done
summary 2 starts
summary 2 cancelled / incomplete
reasoning 0 done  <-- cancel summary 2 work and mark it incomplete
message 1 added
message 1 text streams
message 1 completed
```

rka-oai 33cc928d33 [codex] Use input items for Responses Lite tools (#27946)
When using Responses Lite, we should all use `additional_tools` and a
developer item instead of the top level tools array & instructions
field. This keeps things 1-to-1.

Forced namespacing for _all_ tools will land in a following PR after
some coordination & fixes in Responses API (around collisions & return
items).

The goal is to eventually expand the scope of this to _all_ requests
from codex, but that will require larger coordination across providers &
slower rollout.

Owen Lin 5b95745eae core: rename metadata -> internal_chat_message_metadata_passthrough (#28968)
## Description
This PR cuts Codex over from generic `ResponseItem.metadata` (introduced
here: https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/28355) to
`ResponseItem.internal_chat_message_metadata_passthrough`, which is the
blessed path and has strongly-typed keys.

For now we have to drop this MAv2 usage of `metadata`:
https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/28561 until we figure out where
that should live.

pakrym-oai f00f93d8c0 [codex] Assign response item IDs when recording history (#28814)
## Why

Client-created response items enter history without IDs, so their
identity is lost across rollout persistence and resume. IDs should be
assigned once at the history-recording boundary, while IDs returned by
the server must remain unchanged.

The Responses API validates item IDs using type-specific prefixes.
Locally generated IDs therefore use the matching prefix plus a
hyphenated UUIDv7, keeping them valid while distinguishable from
server-generated IDs. Because this changes persisted history and
provider request shapes, the behavior is opt-in behind the
under-development `item_ids` feature. Compaction triggers remain request
controls whose API shape does not accept an ID.

## What changed

- Register the disabled-by-default `item_ids` feature and expose it in
`config.schema.json`.
- Make supported optional `ResponseItem` IDs serializable and expose
them in the generated app-server schemas.
- When `item_ids` is enabled, assign an ID during conversation-history
preparation if an item has no ID.
- Generate type-prefixed, hyphenated UUIDv7 IDs using the Responses API
item conventions.
- Preserve existing server IDs without rewriting them.
- Persist assigned IDs in rollouts and include them in subsequent
Responses requests.
- Remove the unsupported ID field from `CompactionTrigger` and document
why it has no ID.
- Add integration coverage for enabled ID persistence, preservation of
server IDs, and omission of generated IDs while the feature is disabled.

`prepare_conversation_items_for_history` is the single response-item ID
allocation boundary.

pakrym-oai e752f7b4ae [codex] Use expect in integration tests (#28441)
The workspace denies `clippy::expect_used` in production. Although
`clippy.toml` allows `expect` in tests, Bazel Clippy compiles
integration-test helper code in a way that does not receive that
exemption, which encouraged verbose `unwrap_or_else(... panic!(...))`
and equivalent `match`/`let else` forms.

This allows `clippy::expect_used` once at each integration-test crate
root (including aggregated suites and test-support libraries), then
replaces manual panic-based Result and Option unwraps with
`expect`/`expect_err`. Standalone `tests/*.rs` files remain their own
crate roots. Intentional assertion and unexpected-variant panics remain
unchanged, and the production `expect_used = "deny"` lint remains in
place.

The cleanup is mechanical and net-negative in line count.

Owen Lin 040dafa32d feat(core): add metadata field to ResponseItem (#28355)
## Description

This PR adds an optional `metadata` field to `ResponseItem` for
Responses API calls. Only mechanical plumbing, no actual values
populated and sent yet. Turns out just adding a new field to
`ResponseItem` has quite a large blast radius already.

This change is backwards compatible because `metadata` is optional and
omitted when absent, so existing response items and rollout history
without it still deserialize and requests that do not set it keep the
same wire shape. For provider compatibility, we strip out `metadata`
before non-OpenAI Responses requests so Azure and AWS Bedrock never see
this field.

My followup PR here will actually make use of it to start storing and
passing along `turn_id`: https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/28360

## What changed

- Added `ResponseItemMetadata` with optional `turn_id`, plus optional
`metadata` on Responses API item variants and inter-agent communication.
- Preserved item metadata through response-item rewrites such as
truncation, missing tool-output synthesis, compaction history
rebuilding, visible-history conversion, rollout/resume, and generated
app-server schemas/types.
- Strip item metadata from non-OpenAI Responses requests while
preserving it for OpenAI-shaped requests.
- Updated the mechanical fixture/test construction churn required by the
new optional field.

jif 495da45643 reuse encoded Responses request bodies (#28327)
## Why

Responses HTTP requests were converted from `ResponsesApiRequest` into a
full `serde_json::Value`. `EndpointSession` then deep-cloned that value
for each retry, and the transport serialized and compressed it again
before every send.

Large histories make those copies expensive. Retry attempts should reuse
the same immutable request bytes.

## What

- Serialize standard Responses requests directly into a ref-counted
`EncodedJsonBody`.
- Preserve the Azure path that attaches item IDs before encoding.
- Prepare JSON, compression, and derived content headers once before the
retry loop.
- Clone the prepared request per attempt so body clones only bump the
`Bytes` reference count.
- Keep auth inside the retry loop. Signing auth sees the exact final
headers and body bytes that the transport sends.
- Preserve request-body TRACE output. With TRACE plus compression,
retain the original JSON bytes for logging; normal requests keep only
the final wire bytes.
- Leave non-Responses endpoint bodies on the existing `Value` path.

## Performance

A temporary release-mode measurement used a 10 MiB JSON body and 10
retry preparations:

- old `Value` clone + serialize path: 30 ms total
- prepared shared-byte path: less than 1 ms total

That is about 3 ms avoided per retry for this payload on the test
machine. Each retry also stops allocating another request-sized JSON
tree and serialized buffer. Without TRACE, compressed requests retain
only the final compressed wire bytes.

## Validation

- `just test -p codex-client` — 28 passed
- `just test -p codex-api` — 125 passed
- `just fix -p codex-client`

Adam Perry @ OpenAI 5a56caf18c [codex] Remove async_trait from first-party code (#27475)
## Why

First-party async traits should expose their `Send` contracts explicitly
without requiring `async_trait`. This completes the migration pattern
established in #27303 and #27304.

## What changed

- Replaced the remaining first-party `async_trait` traits with native
return-position `impl Future + Send` where statically dispatched and
explicit boxed `Send` futures where object safety is required.
- Kept implementations behavior-preserving, outlining existing async
bodies into inherent methods where that keeps the diff reviewable.
- Removed all direct first-party `async-trait` dependencies and the
workspace dependency declaration.
- Added a cargo-deny policy that permits `async-trait` only through the
remaining transitive wrapper crates.
- Updated `rand` from 0.8.5 to 0.8.6 to resolve RUSTSEC-2026-0097 and
keep the full cargo-deny check passing.

## Validation

- `just test -p codex-exec-server`: 216 passed, 2 skipped.
- `just test -p codex-model-provider`: 39 passed.
- `just test -p codex-core` and `just test`: changed tests passed;
remaining failures are environment-sensitive suites unrelated to this
migration.

Ahmed Ibrahim e614fad02e [codex] Add comp_hash to model metadata (#27532)
## Summary
- add optional `comp_hash` metadata to `ModelInfo`
- update `ModelInfo` fixtures for the shared schema change
- keep older model responses compatible by defaulting the field to
`None`

## Why
The models endpoint needs an opaque identifier for compaction-compatible
model configurations. This PR only exposes that value in model metadata;
it does not add it to turn context or change runtime behavior.

Follow-up #27520 carries the value through turn context and rollouts,
then uses it to trigger compaction.

rka-oai e0096db6dc [codex] Add use_responses_lite 'override' logic (#26487)
## Summary

- add a defaulted `ModelInfo.use_responses_lite` catalog field
- support serializing `reasoning.context` while preserving the existing

- has not been turned on for any models yet

I've added an override to parallel tools if responses_lite is on. I've
also forced persistent reasoning when using responses_lite. It would be
ideal if we could centralize all the responses_lite plumbing, but I
think this is best for now to keep the plumbing & diffs small.
