ningyi-oai 0df6366a87 Add bounded tool-result metadata support to executed tool calls (#44336)
## What changed

- Add host-recorded `tool_result_metadata` snapshots with size limits, redacted debug output, and protection against deserialization from untrusted input. MCP capture remains disabled.
- Preserve accepted metadata across retries and delayed Code Mode results. Shed raw metadata before source evidence, calls, or completion markers when the request budget is exceeded.
- Send raw metadata only to allowed OpenAI and ChatGPT HTTPS endpoints, filtering by the resolved destination for HTTP and WebSocket requests.
- Encode source parse failures as an array entry with type `parse_failed` and an empty ID.

## Testing

Add coverage for metadata bounds and redaction, retained-call updates, budget shedding, disabled MCP capture, and HTTP/WebSocket destination filtering.

rka-oai 1ac689cc7d Remove the unused legacy remote compaction implementation (#44273)
## Why

Remote compaction already uses the normal Responses API, leaving the legacy `/responses/compact` runner unused.

## What changed

- Remove the legacy runner, endpoint client, request types, analytics variant, and obsolete test helpers and snapshots.
- Move tool-output trimming and its metadata tests into `compact_remote_history` for reuse by remote compaction v2.
- Consolidate retained-history filtering in the v2 implementation and remove redundant `RemoteCompactionV2` settings from tests.

## Testing

Extend the retained-history unit test to explicitly check that hook prompts survive compaction.

jif dee21ec1bc Replace Guardian tickets with parent response IDs (#43002)
## What changed

Capture the ID from `response.created` and pass it as `parent_response_id` in Guardian review and classifier request metadata. Clear the current response ID before sampling retries so tool reviews cannot inherit a failed response's ID.

Request Guardian credits with `guardian_credits_requested` on eligible parent requests. Remove the ticket protocol, transport attachment, and ticket-specific body redaction. Keep ordinary app-server client `parent_response_id` values inside `x-codex-turn-metadata` rather than promoting them to Guardian request metadata.

## Testing

Update coverage for HTTP fallback, WebSocket review reuse, missing response IDs, classifier transport retries, and code-mode yield/resume attribution. Extend app-server tests to verify client metadata placement over HTTP and WebSocket.

jif cc4b8bdeb8 Propagate response tickets to Guardian reviews (#42758)
## What changed

- Request and parse server-issued Guardian tickets for eligible Codex backend responses.
- Scope each ticket to the response that produced a Guardian review or classifier request, including HTTP and WebSocket retries, without adding it to model-visible or persisted context.
- Validate ticket shape, reserve its metadata keys, redact it from debug and request-body logging, and attach it only at the Guardian transport boundary.

## Testing

- Cover ticket parsing, endpoint and authentication routing, retry scoping, classifier retries, and redaction for compressed and uncompressed requests.

alexsong-oai 41d3dc56a0 Surface model provider authentication recovery progress (#41239)
## What changed

- Emit turn-scoped authentication recovery started and completed events when a model provider refreshes expired credentials.
- Add stable `modelProvider/authRecoveryStarted` and `modelProvider/authRecoveryCompleted` app-server notifications with the thread, turn, provider, and user-facing message.
- Show recovery progress in the TUI and `codex exec`, including Amazon Bedrock session reauthentication.

## Testing

- Cover provider recovery success and failure events, app-server routing, client rendering, and Amazon Bedrock credential refresh.

Shijie Rao 7f135e1314 Make Ultra reasoning fallback model-aware (#41206)
## What changed

- Add an optional `multi_agent_reasoning_effort` field to model metadata.
- When `Ultra` is selected, use a supported catalog override when present. Otherwise, prefer `max`, then the highest supported non-`ultra` effort, and finally `medium` when the model has no reasoning levels.
- Preserve existing request behavior for other reasoning efforts, including mapping `persistent` to `disabled`.

## Testing

- Cover configured, missing, unsupported, and empty-catalog fallbacks for both parent and spawned-agent requests.

Dylan Hurd 2c4a95736b Expose response usage metadata in completion events (#41087)
## What changed

- Parse optional `usage_metadata.amount` values from Responses API completion events without converting their string representation.
- Propagate the metadata through SSE and WebSocket streams, regular turns, and remote compaction.
- Add `usageMetadata` to the app-server `rawResponse/completed` notification and its generated schemas.

## Testing

- Cover missing, null, zero, and high-precision amounts, including completion events emitted during compaction.

pakrym-oai e77773085c Give Responses Lite prefix items stable IDs (#40962)
## Why

Responses Lite rebuilds its tools and base-instruction prefix for each request. Stable item identities let follow-up WebSocket requests recognize that unchanged prefix and send only incremental input.

## What changed

- Derive deterministic IDs for additional-tools and base-instruction items from the thread ID and each item's serialized payload.
- Preserve IDs when rebuilding an unchanged request or resuming a session, while changing them when the thread or payload changes.

## Testing

- Cover ID stability and payload/thread sensitivity in request construction.
- Verify resumed Responses Lite sessions reuse prefix IDs and WebSocket follow-ups use `previous_response_id` with only new input items.

jif 62fb56ee56 Route Guardian inference through dedicated endpoints (#40892)
## What changed

- Add the opt-in `features.guardianv2.free_guardian` setting to route eligible
Guardian reviews to `/guardian` and asynchronous classifications to
  `/guardian-classifier`.
- Support endpoint selection for both HTTP and WebSocket Responses clients,
  including endpoint-aware connection reuse.
- Keep `/responses` for API-key authentication, custom provider URLs,
non-Guardian models, and configurations where the option is disabled.
- Omit routing hints and `service_tier` from requests sent to the dedicated
  Guardian endpoints.

## Testing

- Cover route selection across authentication modes, provider URLs, HTTP
fallback, WebSocket review sessions, and classifier sampling.

## What changed

- Add `persistent` to the reasoning-effort protocol and TypeScript SDK types.
- Show model-advertised persistent reasoning in the TUI as “Persistent”.
- Preserve `persistent` in local configuration while sending the Responses API's `disabled` wire value.

## Testing

Won Park 56012fafb8 Add Guardian internal session support (#39994)
## What changed

- Add an extension API for spawning host-owned internal sessions and a
`ThreadReadyInput` lifecycle callback that runs after thread registration.
- Add Guardian reviewer session scaffolding that records the parent thread and
effective model, plus the under-development `guardian_ext` feature flag.
- Start internal sessions with fresh history while preserving parent lineage,
shared session controls, and internal-thread visibility rules.
- Scope internal-session prompt cache keys to their source and parent thread,
and expose `guardian` as an internal session source.

## Testing

- Cover internal-session spawning, parent metadata, history isolation, prompt

Zahan Malkani 536f86e5cc Support attaching to existing realtime calls (#39876)
## Why

Clients that create and negotiate realtime calls themselves need Codex to join
those calls without creating another call or overwriting the client-owned
session configuration.

## What changed

- Add the `existingCall` transport to `thread/realtime/start`, accepting a
  client-provided `callId` and optional `realtimeSessionId`.
- Attach Codex over the call's sideband WebSocket without SDP negotiation or a
session update, and reconnect that sideband while preserving transcript
  state.
- Default existing calls to realtime v1, support v1 and v3, and reject v2 or
options that would reconfigure the client-owned session.
- Encode call IDs as a single URL path segment for v3 sideband connections.

## Testing

Add protocol, app-server, core, reconnection, authentication-header, and URL
encoding coverage for existing-call attachments.

jif 964a227d8c Preserve base instruction provenance across sessions (#37446)
## Why

Persisted base instructions need to retain whether they were explicitly customized or generated from a model template. Without that distinction, forks and config-lock replays can treat model-generated instructions as custom and keep the wrong template after a model or personality change.

## What changed

- Record custom or model provenance with base instructions in rollouts and config locks.
- Preserve custom instructions across model changes, while allowing model-generated instructions to follow the selected model and personality.
- Keep legacy rollouts without provenance compatible and propagate provenance through forks and spawned agents.

## Testing

- Cover provenance serialization and legacy rollout decoding.
- Cover role personality changes, forked model changes, config-lock replay, and multi-agent configuration.

rhan-oai df72fdb415 Consolidate model instructions in ModelMessages (#36787)
## What changed

- Remove `ModelInfo.base_instructions` as an in-memory instruction source and use `model_messages.instructions_template` consistently for bundled, remote, fallback, and overridden model metadata.
- Preserve compatibility by promoting legacy `base_instructions` values when reading model responses and caches, and by including rendered legacy instructions when serializing `ModelsResponse` for older clients.
- Treat templates without instruction variables as literal text and retain the other model-message fields when applying instruction overrides.

This completes the consolidation proposed in https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/31302.

## Testing

- Cover legacy response and cache migration, canonical-template precedence, fallback instructions, personality rendering, overrides, and model switching.

Michael Bolin a26bc337cf Require auth managers to receive routing configuration (#34650)
## Why

Auth managers should use the application's resolved HTTP client factory instead
of silently falling back to the transport's default proxy behavior.

- Make `AuthRouteConfig` required when constructing an `AuthManager` or
  `AuthConfig`.
- Pass each production caller's resolved routing configuration through without
wrapping it in an optional value.
- Add a test helper that explicitly selects the transport-default proxy policy
for callers that do not exercise custom routing.

Michael Bolin 6afcf26d5d core: route Responses API through system proxy (#31335)
## Why

`features.respect_system_proxy` already routes authentication traffic
through the OS proxy APIs, but it does not affect the primary inference
path. That leaves users behind OS-managed proxies unable to send normal
Responses API requests even after login succeeds.

This PR is the first product-path migration onto the route-aware
transport introduced in #31323 and refined in #31331. It also
establishes the construction pattern for later migrations: the effective
feature state is resolved once into a required HTTP client factory
rather than represented by an optional per-call setting.

The scope remains limited to the two HTTP Responses endpoints;
WebSockets, model discovery, memories, realtime, and file uploads remain
follow-up migrations.

## What changed

- Replace the optional proxy marker with an explicit
`OutboundProxyPolicy::{ReqwestDefault, RespectSystemProxy}` and a
required `HttpClientFactory`. The policy has no default, and the
lower-level route-aware reqwest builder is now private.
- Have `Config` construct the factory from the effective feature state
and require every `ModelClient` constructor to receive it. There is no
optional setter or implicit `None` fallback.
- Build HTTP clients for `/responses` and `/responses/compact` with
`ClientRouteClass::Api`, using the complete destination URL so PAC rules
can make URL-specific decisions.
- Layer route-aware selection onto Codex's existing default headers,
Cloudflare cookie store, custom CA handling, and sandbox no-proxy
behavior.
- Add an integration test that loads `features.respect_system_proxy`
through `config.toml`, creates a real Codex session, and verifies that
both a normal Responses turn and remote compaction reach an isolated
local proxy.

## Review guide

1. `http-client/src/outbound_proxy.rs` defines the mandatory
policy/factory boundary and keeps route resolution private.
2. `core/src/config/mod.rs`, `core/src/session/session.rs`, and
`core/src/client.rs` show the compile-time invariant: effective config
creates the factory, and `ModelClient` cannot be constructed without
one.
3. `login/src/auth/default_client.rs` preserves existing default-client
behavior while accepting the required factory for migrated routes.
4. `core/src/client.rs` switches only streaming Responses and remote
compaction HTTP transports to the API route class.
5. `core/tests/suite/responses_api_system_proxy.rs` is the behavioral
regression boundary. Its Linux subprocess deliberately sets the CGI
marker that disables reqwest's implicit environment-proxy handling, so
the test fails if session wiring or either Responses call site falls
back to the default client.

## Test plan

- `cargo check --tests -p codex-http-client -p codex-login -p
codex-core`
- `just test -p codex-login`
- `just test -p codex-core

- Existing `compact_uses_bearer_after_agent_identity_session_fallback`
coverage passes with the new transport construction.
- New Linux integration coverage:

- `just bazel-lock-check`

Shijie Rao 80f54d1266 [codex] Treat max as a first-class reasoning effort (#30467)
## Why

The Bedrock GPT-5.6 catalog advertises `max`, but Codex treated it as an
opaque custom effort. That made the reasoning picker render it as
lowercase `max` while known efforts use productized labels.

Making `max` a known effort aligns catalog data, parsing, and UI
presentation without changing the `max` wire value or persisted
representation.

## What changed

- Add first-class `ReasoningEffort::Max` parsing and serialization.
- Use the typed effort in the Bedrock catalog and render it as `Max` in
the TUI.
- Preserve forward-compatible custom-effort coverage with a genuinely
unknown `future` value.

Adrian 51864b0b4b feat: use run agent task auth for inference (#19051)
## Stack

This is PR 3 of the simplified HAI single-run-task stack:

- [#19047](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/19047) Agent Identity
assertion and task-registration primitives, including the shared
run-task helper used by existing Agent Identity JWT auth.
- [#19049](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/19049)
Disabled-by-default ChatGPT auth opt-in that provisions/reuses persisted
Agent Identity runtime auth and its single run task.
- [#19051](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/19051) Run-scoped
provider auth that uses one backend-owned task id for first-party
inference and compaction requests.

[#19054](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/19054) collapsed out of
the active stack because the simplified design no longer needs a
separate background/control-plane task helper.

## Summary

This PR moves Agent Identity usage into provider auth resolution. That
keeps `AgentAssertion` auth tied to first-party OpenAI provider requests
instead of applying a late session-wide override that could affect
local, custom, Bedrock, API-key, or external-bearer providers.

What changed:

- adds a small `ProviderAuthScope` struct carrying the run auth policy
and session source needed by provider-scoped auth resolution
- lets `Session` opt the existing `ModelClient` into `ChatGptAuth`
policy when `use_agent_identity` is enabled, without adding a second
model-client constructor
- resolves Agent Identity only for first-party OpenAI provider auth
paths
- uses the persisted run task id from the `AgentIdentityAuth` record to
build `AgentAssertion` auth for Responses requests
- routes shared request setup through scoped provider auth so unary
compact requests use the same run-task assertion path as inference turns
- keeps local/custom/Bedrock/env-key/external-bearer provider auth
unchanged
- lets missing run-task state surface through the existing model-request
error path instead of silently falling back to bearer auth

This PR intentionally does not create thread-scoped, target-scoped, or
background-scoped task identities. The run task is the only task Codex
registers in this POC shape.

Shijie Rao df1199fddb [codex] Add Ultra reasoning effort (#29899)
## Why

Ultra should be one user-facing reasoning selection for work that
benefits from both maximum reasoning and proactive multi-agent
delegation. Without it, clients must coordinate maximum reasoning with
the experimental `multiAgentMode` setting, even though the inference
backend still expects its existing `max` effort value.

This change makes reasoning effort the source of truth: clients select
`ultra`, core derives proactive multi-agent behavior when the turn is
eligible for multi-agent V2, and inference requests continue to use the
backend-compatible `max` value.

## What changed

- Add `ultra` as a first-class reasoning effort and preserve
model-catalog ordering when exposing it to clients.
- Convert `ultra` to `max` at the inference request boundary, including
Responses HTTP/WebSocket requests, startup prewarm, compaction, and
memory summarization.
- Derive effective multi-agent mode per turn from effective reasoning
effort:
  - eligible multi-agent V2 + `ultra` → `proactive`
  - eligible multi-agent V2 + any other effort → `explicitRequestOnly`
- V1 or otherwise ineligible sessions → no multi-agent mode instruction
- Keep the derived effective mode in turn context history so successive
turns can emit a developer-message update only when the effective mode
changes.
- Remove selected multi-agent mode from core session configuration, turn
construction, thread settings, resume/fork restoration, and subagent
spawn plumbing. Subagents inherit reasoning effort and derive their own
effective mode.
- Retain the experimental app-server `multiAgentMode` fields for wire
compatibility while marking them deprecated. Request values are accepted
but ignored; compatibility response fields report `explicitRequestOnly`.
- Display Ultra in the TUI using the order supplied by `model/list`.

## Validation

- `just test -p codex-tui model_reasoning_selection_popup`

Adam Perry @ OpenAI 31372078d1 auth: move domain mode below app wire types (#29721)
## Why

Authentication mode is a domain concept used by login, model selection,
telemetry, and transports. Keeping the canonical type in app-server
protocol forces those lower-level crates to depend on an unrelated wire
API.

## What changed

- Added canonical `codex_protocol::auth::AuthMode` domain values.
- Kept the app-server wire DTO unchanged and added an explicit app-side
conversion.
- Removed production app-server-protocol dependencies from login,
model-provider-info, models-manager, and otel call paths.

## Stack

alexsong-oai 1acb722e8a Support thread-level originator overrides (#29477)
## Why

Work(TPP) threads can be launched from the Desktop app, but if they all
keep the Desktop app's default originator then downstream attribution
cannot distinguish local Work launches from cloud-backed Work launches.
`thread/start.serviceName` already carries that launch signal, while
`SessionMeta.originator` is the durable thread-level value that survives
resume and fork.

This change converts the Desktop Work service names into an effective
originator at thread creation time, persists that originator with the
thread, and keeps using it for later model requests and memory writes.

## What changed

- Map `CODEX_WORK_LOCAL` and `CODEX_WORK_CLOUD` service names to
per-thread originators, while preserving
`CODEX_INTERNAL_ORIGINATOR_OVERRIDE` as the highest-precedence override.
- Persist the effective originator in `SessionMeta.originator`, read it
back on resume/fork, and inherit the parent originator for subagent
spawns when there is no persisted session metadata.
- Handle truncated `SpawnAgentForkMode::LastNTurns` forks by falling
back to the live parent originator when the forked history no longer
includes `SessionMeta`.
- Thread the per-thread originator through Responses headers,
websocket/compaction request paths, thread-store creation, rollout
metadata, and memory stage-one telemetry.

Celia Chen e65e480e0d chore: improve expired Bedrock credential errors (#28992)
## Why

Amazon Bedrock returns a `401 Unauthorized` response containing
`Signature expired:` when an AWS credential, including a short-lived
`AWS_BEARER_TOKEN_BEDROCK`, has expired. Codex currently surfaces that
response as a generic `unexpected status` error, which does not explain
how to recover.

Environment-provided bearer tokens cannot be refreshed automatically, so
the error should direct users to refresh their AWS credentials or
replace or remove the environment token and restart Codex. This
classification belongs to the Amazon Bedrock provider so similar
responses from other providers retain their existing behavior.

## What changed

- Add a synchronous `ModelProvider::map_api_error` hook that defaults to
the existing provider-neutral API error mapping, and route model
request, stream, WebSocket, and terminal unauthorized errors through the
active provider.
- Override the hook for Amazon Bedrock. After preserving the structured
status, body, URL, and request metadata, recognize `401` responses
containing `Signature expired:` and attach actionable credential
guidance.
- Keep `codex-protocol` provider-neutral by representing the guidance as
an optional `user_message`. Error rendering prefers this message while
continuing to append the URL, request ID, Cloudflare ray, and
authorization diagnostics.
- Add model-provider coverage for expired signatures and negative cases,
core coverage for provider dispatch after unauthorized recovery, and a
TUI snapshot for the rendered error.

## Testing

Owen Lin 5b95745eae core: rename metadata -> internal_chat_message_metadata_passthrough (#28968)
## Description
This PR cuts Codex over from generic `ResponseItem.metadata` (introduced
here: https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/28355) to
`ResponseItem.internal_chat_message_metadata_passthrough`, which is the
blessed path and has strongly-typed keys.

For now we have to drop this MAv2 usage of `metadata`:

that should live.

pakrym-oai f00f93d8c0 [codex] Assign response item IDs when recording history (#28814)
## Why

Client-created response items enter history without IDs, so their
identity is lost across rollout persistence and resume. IDs should be
assigned once at the history-recording boundary, while IDs returned by
the server must remain unchanged.

The Responses API validates item IDs using type-specific prefixes.
Locally generated IDs therefore use the matching prefix plus a
hyphenated UUIDv7, keeping them valid while distinguishable from
server-generated IDs. Because this changes persisted history and
provider request shapes, the behavior is opt-in behind the
under-development `item_ids` feature. Compaction triggers remain request
controls whose API shape does not accept an ID.

## What changed

- Register the disabled-by-default `item_ids` feature and expose it in
`config.schema.json`.
- Make supported optional `ResponseItem` IDs serializable and expose
them in the generated app-server schemas.
- When `item_ids` is enabled, assign an ID during conversation-history
preparation if an item has no ID.
- Generate type-prefixed, hyphenated UUIDv7 IDs using the Responses API
item conventions.
- Preserve existing server IDs without rewriting them.
- Persist assigned IDs in rollouts and include them in subsequent
Responses requests.
- Remove the unsupported ID field from `CompactionTrigger` and document
why it has no ID.
- Add integration coverage for enabled ID persistence, preservation of
server IDs, and omission of generated IDs while the feature is disabled.

`prepare_conversation_items_for_history` is the single response-item ID
allocation boundary.

Owen Lin 040dafa32d feat(core): add metadata field to ResponseItem (#28355)
## Description

This PR adds an optional `metadata` field to `ResponseItem` for
Responses API calls. Only mechanical plumbing, no actual values
populated and sent yet. Turns out just adding a new field to
`ResponseItem` has quite a large blast radius already.

This change is backwards compatible because `metadata` is optional and
omitted when absent, so existing response items and rollout history
without it still deserialize and requests that do not set it keep the
same wire shape. For provider compatibility, we strip out `metadata`
before non-OpenAI Responses requests so Azure and AWS Bedrock never see
this field.

My followup PR here will actually make use of it to start storing and
passing along `turn_id`: https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/28360

## What changed

- Added `ResponseItemMetadata` with optional `turn_id`, plus optional
`metadata` on Responses API item variants and inter-agent communication.
- Preserved item metadata through response-item rewrites such as
truncation, missing tool-output synthesis, compaction history
rebuilding, visible-history conversion, rollout/resume, and generated
app-server schemas/types.
- Strip item metadata from non-OpenAI Responses requests while
preserving it for OpenAI-shaped requests.
- Updated the mechanical fixture/test construction churn required by the
new optional field.

Ahmed Ibrahim 640d61b121 [codex] Send request-scoped turn state over WebSocket (#27996)
## Context

Turn state is scoped to one logical turn, but the WebSocket path
currently exchanges it through upgrade headers, which are scoped to the
physical connection. A connection may be reused across turns, so its
handshake cannot represent the turn lifecycle reliably.

## Change

Exchange turn state on each WebSocket response request instead:

- send an established value in `response.create.client_metadata`
- read the returned value from the existing `response.metadata` event
- retain the first value in the turn-scoped `ModelClientSession`
`OnceLock`
- start the next logical turn without state, even when it reuses the
same WebSocket connection

This gives WebSocket requests the same first-value-wins contract as the
existing HTTP path.

## Test plan

Integration coverage verifies that:

- WebSocket replays returned state on same-turn follow-ups
- later response metadata does not replace the first value
- state resets at the logical turn boundary without requiring a
reconnect

CI validates the full change.

## Stack

This is 1/2. #28002 builds on this request-scoped transport to carry
established state through compact requests.

Owen Lin 14df0e8833 core: Consolidate Responses API Codex metadata (#27122)
## What
Introduce a `CodexResponsesMetadata` struct that defines all the core
metadata we send to Responses API. Example fields are `thread_id`,
`turn_id`, `window_id`, etc.

Going forward, `client_metadata["x-codex-turn-metadata"]` will be the
canonical way Codex sends metadata to Responses API across both HTTP and
websocket transports.

For now, we continue to emit the existing top-level HTTP headers and
top-level `client_metadata` fields from the same
`CodexResponsesMetadata` struct for compatibility reasons.

Also, app-server clients who specify additional
`responsesapi_client_metadata` via `turn/start` and `turn/steer` will
have those fields merged into
`client_metadata["x-codex-turn-metadata"]`, but cannot override the
reserved fields that core uses (i.e. the fields in
`CodexResponsesMetadata`).

## Why

Responses API request instrumentation is the source of truth for
downstream Codex analytics that join requests by Codex IDs such as
session, thread, turn, and context window. Before this change, those
values were assembled through several request-specific paths: HTTP
request bodies, websocket handshake headers, websocket `response.create`
payloads, compaction requests, and the rich `x-codex-turn-metadata`
envelope all had their own wiring.

That made metadata propagation easy to drift across API-key/direct
Responses API requests, ChatGPT-auth/proxied requests, websocket
requests, and compaction requests. It also made additions like
`window_id` error-prone because a field could be added to one transport
projection but missed in another.

## What changed

- Added `CodexResponsesMetadata` as the core-owned snapshot for Codex
metadata sent to ResponsesAPI.
- Render `client_metadata["x-codex-turn-metadata"]`, flat
`client_metadata` projections, and direct compatibility headers from
that same snapshot.
- Include the known Codex-owned fields in the turn metadata blob,
including installation/session/thread/turn/window IDs, request kind,
lineage, sandbox/workspace metadata, timing, and compaction details.
- Treat app-server `responsesapi_client_metadata` as enrichment for the
Codex turn metadata blob while preventing those extras from overriding
Codex-owned fields.
- Use the same metadata path for normal turns, websocket prewarm, local
compaction, remote v1 compaction, and remote v2 compaction.
- Keep websocket connection-only preconnect metadata separate so
handshakes carry compatibility identity headers without inventing a fake
turn metadata blob.

pakrym-oai 30ddb3325e [codex] Store compact window id in rollout (#27264)
## Why

Compaction window identity is part of session history, not model-client
transport state. Persisting it with the compacted rollout item lets
resumed threads continue from the reconstructed window without keeping
mutable window state on `ModelClient`.

## What changed

- Added `window_id` to `CompactedItem` and stamp it when
`replace_compacted_history` installs compacted history.
- Moved auto-compact window id ownership into `AutoCompactWindow` /
`SessionState`; `ModelClient` now receives the request window id from
callers instead of storing it.
- Returned `window_id` from rollout reconstruction for resume.
Reconstruction uses the newest surviving compacted item's stored
`window_id` when present, and falls back to the legacy compacted-item
count when it is absent.
- Kept fork startup at the fresh default window id and updated direct
model-client tests to pass explicit test window ids.

## Validation

Owen Lin cf0911076f store and expose parent_thread_id on Threads (#25113)
## Why

This PR
https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/24161#discussion_r3325692763
revealed a subagent data modeling issue, where we overloaded
`forked_from_id` to also mean `parent_thread_id`. That's incorrect since
guardian and review subagents can be a subagent and NOT fork the main
thread's history.

The solution here is to explicitly store a new `parent_thread_id` on
`SessionMeta`, alongside `forked_from_id` which already exists. While
we're at it, also expose it in the app-server protocol on the `Thread`
object.

A thread->subagent relationship and a fork of thread history are
orthogonal concepts.

## What Changed

- Added top-level `parent_thread_id` persistence on `SessionMeta` and
runtime/session plumbing through `SessionConfiguredEvent`,
`CodexSpawnArgs`, `SessionConfiguration`, `ThreadConfigSnapshot`,
`TurnContext`, and `ModelClient`.
- Made turn metadata, request headers, analytics, and subagent-start
events read the separate runtime/top-level parent field instead of
deriving general parent lineage from `SessionSource` or
`forked_from_thread_id`.
- Passed parent lineage separately at delegated subagent, review,
guardian, agent-job, and multi-agent spawn construction sites;
copied-history fork lineage remains derived only from `InitialHistory`.
- Persisted and exposed parent lineage through rollout/thread-store
projections and app-server v2 `Thread.parentThreadId`.
- Updated app-server README text and regenerated app-server schema
fixtures for the additive `parentThreadId` response field.

Jiaming ZhangandCodex 5f4d0ec343 [codex] request desktop attestation from app (#20619)
## Summary

TL;DR: teaches `codex-rs` / app-server to request a desktop-provided
attestation token and attach it as `x-oai-attestation` on the scoped
ChatGPT Codex request paths.

![DeviceCheck attestation
interface](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/openai/codex/dev/jm/devicecheck-diagram-assets/pr-assets/devicecheck-attestation-interface.png)

## Details

This PR teaches the Codex app-server runtime how to request and attach
an attestation token. It does not generate DeviceCheck tokens directly;
instead, it relies on the connected desktop app to advertise that it can
generate attestation and then asks that app for a fresh header value
when needed.

The flow is:

1. The Codex desktop app connects to app-server.
2. During `initialize`, the app can advertise that it supports
`requestAttestation`.
3. Before app-server calls selected ChatGPT Codex endpoints, it sends
the internal server request `attestation/generate` to the app.
4. app-server receives a pre-encoded header value back.
5. app-server forwards that value as `x-oai-attestation` on the scoped
outbound requests.

The code in this repo is mostly protocol and runtime plumbing: it adds
the app-server request/response shape, introduces an attestation
provider in core, wires that provider into Responses / compaction /
realtime setup paths, and covers the intended scoping with tests. The
signed macOS DeviceCheck generation remains owned by the desktop app PR.

<summary>E2E DeviceCheck validation</summary>

First validated the signed desktop app boundary directly: launched a
packaged signed `Codex.app`, sent `attestation/generate`, decoded the
returned `v1.` attestation header, and validated the extracted
DeviceCheck token with `personal/jm/verify_devicecheck_token.py` using
bundle ID `com.openai.codex`. Apple returned `status_code: 200` and
`is_ok: true`.

Then ran the fuller app + app-server flow. The packaged `Codex.app`
launched a current-branch app-server via `CODEX_CLI_PATH`, and a local
MITM proxy intercepted outbound `chatgpt.com` traffic. The app-server
requested `attestation/generate` from the real Electron app process, and
the intercepted `/backend-api/codex/responses` traffic included
`x-oai-attestation` on both routes:

```text
GET  /backend-api/codex/responses  Upgrade: websocket  x-oai-attestation: present
POST /backend-api/codex/responses  Upgrade: none       x-oai-attestation: present
```

The captured header decoded to a DeviceCheck token that also validated
with Apple for `com.openai.codex` (`status_code: 200`, `is_ok: true`,
team `2DC432GLL2`).

TLDR:
We update the meaning of session ids and thread ids:
* thread_id stays as now
* session_id become a shared id between every thread under a /root
thread (i.e. every sub-agent share the same session id)

This PR introduces an explicit `SessionId` and threads it through the
protocol/client boundary so `session_id` and `thread_id` can diverge
when they need to, while preserving compatibility for older serialized
`session_configured` events.

sayan-oai 8126af3879 core: preserve last model ids in feedback tags (#21026)
## Why

Feedback reports do not currently surface a direct pointer to the last
model call, so investigations may require searching through many
requests in a session to find the bad response. Preserve the last
model-side IDs at response-stream time so immediate feedback reports
carry that breadcrumb.

## What changed

upstream request ID.
- Record `last_model_response_id` when the model response completes.
- Add unit coverage for the emitted feedback tags.

## Verification

- `cargo test -p codex-core

cassirer-openai 89698ad1c3 [rollout-trace] Include x-request-id in rollout trace. (#20066)
## Why

Rollout traces need an identifier that can be used to correlate a Codex
inference with upstream Responses API, proxy, and engine logs. The
reduced trace model already exposed `upstream_request_id`, but it was
being populated from the Responses API `response.id`. That value is
useful for `previous_response_id` chaining, but it is not the transport
request id that upstream systems key on.

This PR separates those concepts so trace consumers can reliably answer
both questions:

- which Responses API response did this inference produce?
- which upstream request handled it?

## Structure

The change keeps the upstream request id at the same lifecycle level as
the provider stream:

- `codex-api` captures the `x-request-id` HTTP response header when the
SSE stream is created and exposes it on `ResponseStream`. Fixture and
websocket streams set the field to `None` because they do not have that
HTTP response header.
- `codex-core` carries that stream-level id into `InferenceTraceAttempt`
when recording terminal stream outcomes. Completed, failed, cancelled,
dropped-stream, and pre-response error paths all record the id when it
is available.
- `rollout-trace` now records both identifiers in raw terminal inference
events and response payloads: `response_id` for the Responses API
`response.id`, and `upstream_request_id` for `x-request-id`.
- The reducer stores both fields on `InferenceCall`. It also uses
`response_id` for `previous_response_id` conversation linking, which
removes the old accidental dependency on the misnamed
`upstream_request_id` field.
- Terminal inference reduction now consumes the full terminal payload
(`InferenceCompleted`, `InferenceFailed`, or `InferenceCancelled`) in
one place. That keeps status, partial payloads, response ids, and
upstream request ids consistent across success, failure, cancellation,
and late stream-mapper events.

## Why This Shape

`x-request-id` is a property of the HTTP/provider response envelope, not
an SSE event. Capturing it once in `codex-api` and plumbing it through
terminal trace recording avoids trying to infer the value from stream
contents, and it preserves the id even when the stream fails or is
cancelled after only partial output.

Keeping `response_id` separate from `upstream_request_id` also makes the
reduced trace model less surprising: `response_id` remains the
conversation-continuation id, while `upstream_request_id` is the
operational correlation id for upstream debugging.

## Validation

The PR updates trace and reducer coverage for:

- reading `x-request-id` from SSE response headers;
- storing the true upstream request id on completed inference calls;
- preserving upstream request ids for cancelled and late-cancelled
inference streams;
- keeping `previous_response_id` reconstruction tied to `response_id`
rather than transport request ids.

efrazer-oai be75785504 fix: fully revert agent identity runtime wiring (#18757)
## Summary

This PR fully reverts the previously merged Agent Identity runtime
integration from the old stack:
https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/17387/changes

It removes the Codex-side task lifecycle wiring, rollout/session
persistence, feature flag plumbing, lazy `auth.json` mutation,
background task auth paths, and request callsite changes introduced by
that stack.

This leaves the repo in a clean pre-AgentIdentity integration state so
the follow-up PRs can reintroduce the pieces in smaller reviewable
layers.

Adrian b44d2851cf [codex] Use AgentAssertion downstream behind use_agent_identity (#17980)
## Summary

This is the AgentAssertion downstream slice for feature-gated agent
identity support, replacing the oversized AgentAssertion slice from PR
#17807.

It isolates task-scoped downstream AgentAssertion wiring on top of the
merged PR3.1 work without re-carrying the earlier agent registration,
task registration, or task-state history.

This PR includes the task-scoped bug-fix call sites from the review:
generic file upload auth, MCP OpenAI file upload auth, and ARC monitor
auth. Broader user/control-plane calls move to PR4.1 and PR4.2.

## Stack

- PR1: https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/17385 - add
`features.use_agent_identity`
- PR2: https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/17386 - register agent
identities when enabled
- PR3: https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/17387 - register agent tasks
when enabled
- PR3.1: https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/17978 - persist and
prewarm registered tasks per thread
- PR4: this PR - use task-scoped `AgentAssertion` downstream when
enabled
- PR4.1: https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/18094 - introduce
AuthManager-owned background/control-plane `AgentAssertion` auth
- PR4.2: https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/18260 - use background
task auth for additional backend/control-plane calls

## What Changed

- add AgentAssertion envelope generation in `codex-core`
- route downstream HTTP and websocket auth through AgentAssertion when
an agent task is present
- extend the model-provider auth provider so non-bearer authorization
schemes can be passed through cleanly
- make generic file uploads attach the full authorization header value
- make MCP OpenAI file uploads use the cached thread agent task
assertion when present
- make ARC monitor calls use the cached thread agent task assertion when
present

## Why

The original PR had drifted ancestry and showed a much larger diff than
the semantic change actually required. Restacking it onto PR3.1 keeps
the reviewable surface down to the downstream assertion slice.

Celia Chenandpakrym-oai a803790a10 feat: add opt-in provider runtime abstraction (#17713)
## Summary

- Add `codex-model-provider` as the runtime home for model-provider
behavior that does not belong in `codex-core`, `codex-login`, or

Owen Lin 5d1671ca70 feat(analytics): generate an installation_id and pass it in responsesapi client_metadata (#16912)
## Summary

This adds a stable Codex installation ID and includes it on Responses
API requests via `x-codex-installation-id` passed in via the
`client_metadata` field for analytics/debugging.

The main pieces are:
- persist a UUID in `$CODEX_HOME/installation_id`
- thread the installation ID into `ModelClient`
- send it in `client_metadata` on Responses requests so it works
consistently across HTTP and WebSocket transports

pakrym-oai 413c1e1fdf [codex] reduce module visibility (#16978)
## Summary
- reduce public module visibility across Rust crates, preferring private
or crate-private modules with explicit crate-root public exports
- update external call sites and tests to use the intended public crate
APIs instead of reaching through module trees
- add the module visibility guideline to AGENTS.md

## Validation
- `cargo check --workspace --all-targets --message-format=short` passed
before the final fix/format pass
- `just fix` completed successfully
- `just fmt` completed successfully
- `git diff --check` passed

Ahmed IbrahimandCodex af8a9d2d2b remove temporary ownership re-exports (#16626)
Stacked on #16508.

This removes the temporary `codex-core` / `codex-login` re-export shims
from the ownership split and rewrites callsites to import directly from
`codex-model-provider-info`, `codex-models-manager`, `codex-api`,
`codex-protocol`, `codex-feedback`, and `codex-response-debug-context`.

No behavior change intended; this is the mechanical import cleanup layer
split out from the ownership move.
