fix(tui): avoid doubled blank rows while streaming (#26636)
## Summary During assistant-message streaming, blank markdown lines in the transient active tail were prefixed with two spaces. Ratatui measured those whitespace-only lines as two viewport rows, so list- and table-heavy answers showed doubled vertical gaps while streaming and then visibly compacted when finalized into scrollback. - keep whitespace-only `StreamingAgentTailCell` lines structurally empty while preserving nonblank message prefixes - clear impossible hyperlink metadata when normalizing a blank tail line - add an inline snapshot and height regression proving one blank markdown line occupies one viewport row Related to #26618, but fixes a separate live-tail row-height issue rather than stale committed markdown content. ## How to Test Recommended before/after reproduction: 1. Start the latest Codex build without this change. 2. Submit this exact prompt: > Send 20 different lists: bullets vs numbered, simple vs complex with paragraphs in between items, etc. Intertwine them with some tables and some paragraphs. 3. While the answer streams, observe duplicated vertical gaps around list items and paragraphs. When the answer finishes, observe the spacing compact. 4. Start this branch with `just c` and submit the same prompt. 5. Confirm each intended blank markdown line occupies one terminal row throughout streaming and that the spacing does not compact or jump when the answer finishes. 6. As a focused regression, verify the sections after the first table, especially loose lists with paragraphs between items; those blank rows should remain stable throughout streaming. Targeted tests: - `just test -p codex-tui streaming_agent_tail_blank_line_uses_one_viewport_row` - `just test -p codex-tui history_cell::tests` ## Test Notes - Verified the exact prompt above in a real tmux TUI using latest Codex and this branch as the before/after comparison. - The full `just test -p codex-tui` run completed 2,782 of 2,784 tests successfully. Two unrelated guardian feature-flag tests fail reproducibly in isolation because the expected `OverrideTurnContext` message is absent. - `just argument-comment-lint` is blocked locally by the existing Bazel `compiler-rt` missing-header glob error; the touched Rust diff was inspected manually for opaque positional literals. |

[codex] Support model-defined reasoning efforts (#26444)
## Summary - accept non-empty model-defined reasoning effort values while preserving built-in effort behavior - propagate the non-Copy effort type through core, app-server, TUI, telemetry, and persistence call sites - preserve string wire encoding and expose an open-string schema for clients - update model selection and shortcut behavior for model-advertised effort values ## Root cause `ReasoningEffort` gained a string-backed custom variant, so it could no longer implement `Copy` or rely on derived closed-enum serialization. Existing consumers still moved effort values from shared references and assumed a fixed built-in value set. ## Validation - `just fmt` - Local tests and compilation were not run per request; relying on CI. |

Show activity for standalone web search calls (#24693)
## Why Standalone `web.run` calls run in the extension, so they need normal web-search progress activity while a request is in flight and durable completed activity after a thread is reloaded. Follow-up to #23823; uses the extension turn-item emission path added in #24813. ## What changed - Emit standalone `web.run` start/completion items through the host turn-item emitter, preserving standard client delivery and rollout persistence. - Include useful completion detail for queries, image queries, and literal-URL `open`/`find` commands. - Render completed searches as `Searched the web` or `Searched the web for <detail>`, with snapshot coverage for the detail-free case. - Extend the app-server round-trip test to verify completed search activity is reconstructed by `thread/read` after a fresh-process reload. ## Testing - `just test -p codex-web-search-extension` - `just test -p codex-app-server -E "test(standalone_web_search_round_trips_encrypted_output)"` |

Render multiline hook output in TUI (#24965)
# Why Fixes #24529. Completed hook output in the TUI rendered each `HookOutputEntry` as one ratatui line, so explicit newlines inside hook output were not shown as separate transcript rows. That made multiline `SessionStart.additionalContext` hard to inspect even though the model-facing context path preserved the original text. # What - Split completed hook output entries on explicit newlines before rendering them in `codex-rs/tui/src/history_cell/hook_cell.rs`. - Keep the hook output prefix, such as `hook context:` or `warning:`, on the first physical line only. - Preserve explicit blank lines and render continuation lines with the hook body indent. - Add unit coverage for multiline context and warning output, plus a chatwidget snapshot regression for `SessionStart` history output. # Testing - `cargo nextest run -p codex-tui completed_hook_multiline hook_completed_before_reveal_renders_completed_without_running_flash` - `just argument-comment-lint -p codex-tui -- --ignore-rust-version --lib --tests` |

feat(tui): add OSC 8 web links to rich content (#24472)
## Why Wrapped URLs in rich TUI output, especially URLs rendered inside Markdown tables, are split across terminal rows. In terminals that support OSC 8 hyperlinks, treating each visible fragment as part of the complete destination enables reliable open-link and copy-link actions even after table layout wraps the URL. This addresses the semantic-link portion of #12200 and the behavior described in https://github.com/openai/codex/issues/12200#issuecomment-4535452980. It does not change ordinary drag-selection across bordered table rows. ## What Changed - Added shared TUI OSC 8 support that validates `http://` and `https://` destinations, sanitizes terminal payloads, and applies metadata separately from visible line width/layout. - Added semantic web-link annotations to assistant and proposed-plan Markdown, including explicit web links and bare web URLs in prose and table cells while excluding code and non-web Markdown destinations. - Preserved complete URL targets through table wrapping, narrow pipe fallback, streaming, transcript overlay rendering, history insertion, and resize replay. - Routed intentional Codex-owned links in notices, status/setup/app-link, feedback, onboarding, MCP/plugin help, memories, and update surfaces through the shared hyperlink handling. ## How to Test 1. Run Codex in a terminal with OSC 8 link support, such as Ghostty, and request an assistant response containing a Markdown table whose last column contains a long `https://` URL. 2. Make the terminal narrow enough for the URL to wrap across multiple bordered table rows. 3. Use the terminal's open-link or copy-link action on more than one wrapped URL fragment and confirm each fragment resolves to the complete original URL. 4. Resize the terminal after the table is rendered and repeat the link action to confirm the destination survives scrollback replay. 5. Open the transcript overlay while rich output is present and confirm web links remain interactive there. 6. As a regression check, render inline/fenced code containing URL text and a Markdown link such as `[https://example.com](mailto:support@example.com)`; confirm these do not acquire a web OSC 8 destination. Targeted automated coverage exercised Markdown links and exclusions, wrapped and pipe-fallback tables, streaming/transcript overlay propagation, status-link truncation, and rendered word-wrapping cell alignment. `just test -p codex-tui` was also run; it passed the hyperlink coverage and reproduced two unrelated existing guardian feature-flag test failures. |

feat(tui): render markdown tables in app style [1 of 2] (#24489)
## Stack - **Current: #24489 [1 of 2]** - render markdown tables in app style. - **Stacked follow-up: #24636 [2 of 2]** - render cramped markdown tables as key/value records. ## Why Markdown tables currently render as boxed terminal grids, which gives ordinary assistant output a heavier visual treatment than surrounding rich text. This row-separated layout is the best match for how the App renders tables, while accented headers remain distinguishable even when a terminal font renders bold subtly. <table> <tr><td> <p align="center">Codex CLI - Before</p> <img width="1722" height="742" alt="CleanShot 2026-05-25 at 18 46 17" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/f673d92a-ebd8-46e2-b414-3d985e41b6a4" /> </td></tr> <tr><td> <p align="center">Codex CLI - After</p> <img width="1720" height="957" alt="image" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/36a3d331-bea1-439b-b5be-e97b0731bd6f" /> </td></tr> <tr><td> <p align="center">Codex App</p> <img width="979" height="1293" alt="CleanShot 2026-05-25 at 18 45 04" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/7d97cae0-9256-4f6e-a4b3-8b8f22b0d901" /> </td></tr> </table> ## What Changed - Render markdown tables as padded, aligned rows without an enclosing box. - Style table headers with the active syntax-theme accent plus bold text, while keeping separators low contrast and theme-aware. - Use a segmented heavy header rule and thin body-row rules, preserving wrapping, narrow-width fallback, streaming parity, and rich-history rendering. - Update focused assertions and snapshots for the final table layout. ## How to Test 1. Render a markdown table in the TUI with several rows and columns. 2. Confirm the header uses the active theme accent, rows use one-character interior padding, and the table has no enclosing box. 3. Confirm the header is followed by segmented `━` rules and multiple body rows are separated by muted segmented `─` rules. 4. Render the same table while streaming and in history/raw-mode toggles; the final rich layout should remain stable. 5. Render a narrow table with long content and verify wrapping or pipe fallback does not overflow. ## Validation - `just test -p codex-tui table` - `just test -p codex-tui streaming::controller::tests` - `just argument-comment-lint-from-source -p codex-tui -- --all-targets` - `just fix -p codex-tui` - `just fmt` `just test -p codex-tui` was also run after accepting the snapshots; it fails only in the unrelated existing guardian app tests `update_feature_flags_disabling_guardian_clears_review_policy_and_restores_default` and `update_feature_flags_disabling_guardian_clears_manual_review_policy_without_history`. |

fix: run standalone updates noninteractively (#24637)
# Summary The standalone update action currently downloads and runs the Codex installer as an interactive command. When an existing managed Codex install is present, accepting an update can therefore enter an installer prompt instead of completing the update. This change runs the standalone installer with `CODEX_NON_INTERACTIVE=1` on macOS/Linux and Windows. The installer environment-variable support is introduced by the parent PR; this PR wires that behavior into the Codex CLI update action. The rendered Windows command remains shell-safe, and long update commands wrap within the update-notice card. The standard test target snapshots the standalone notice for both platforms. # Stack 1. [#21567](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/21567) - Adds environment-controlled release selection and noninteractive installer behavior. 2. [#24637](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/24637) - Runs standalone updates with `CODEX_NON_INTERACTIVE=1`. (current) 3. [#24639](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/24639) - Removes explicit release argument inputs in favor of `CODEX_RELEASE`. # Evidence Standalone updater-shaped macOS install with an existing npm-managed Codex on `PATH`: https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/a27fe9e9-db3a-4c39-a514-24bd3d1f01e8 # Testing Tests: targeted `codex-tui` update-action and update-notice snapshot tests, Rust formatting, benchmark smoke validation, macOS live-terminal standalone-update smoke testing, Windows ARM64 PowerShell standalone-update smoke testing through Parallels, and CI. |

fix(tui): improve multiline markdown list readability (#24351)
## Why Numbered Markdown findings become hard to scan when long items visually run together or when wrapped explanatory paragraphs lose their list indentation. This is especially visible in review output: the next number can look attached to the previous finding, and paragraph continuation rows can jump back toward the left margin instead of staying grouped beneath their item. <table><tr><td> <center>Before</center> <img width="1718" height="836" alt="CleanShot 2026-05-24 at 14 00 49" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/f1ee0023-50fa-4f81-a641-ae08b17b99bd" /> </td></tr> <tr><td> <center>After</center> <img width="1714" height="906" alt="image" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/b123a5e0-a232-47bf-96d5-c935295f7c0a" /> </td></tr> </table> ## What Changed - Insert a blank separator before a sibling list item when the previous item occupies more than one rendered line. - Preserve compact rendering for lists whose sibling items each render on one line. - Preserve list-body leading whitespace when transient streamed assistant rows require another wrapping pass for history display, so wrapped paragraphs stay aligned beneath their item. - Share the existing leading-whitespace prefix logic used by history insertion instead of introducing a second indentation rule. - Keep streamed Markdown output aligned with completed rendering and add snapshots for findings-style spacing and streamed paragraph indentation. ## How to Test 1. Start Codex from this branch and open the recorded repro session `019e563f-7d58-7ff2-8ec7-828f20fa61ca`. 2. Inspect the numbered `Findings` list whose items contain explanatory paragraphs. 3. Confirm each multiline finding is separated from the next numbered finding by one blank line. 4. Confirm wrapped rows of each indented paragraph remain aligned beneath the finding body, rather than returning to the left edge. 5. Render a short one-line numbered or unordered list and confirm its items remain compact without added blank rows. Targeted tests: - `just test -p codex-tui history_cell insert_history markdown_render markdown_stream streaming::controller` - `just argument-comment-lint-from-source -p codex-tui` ## Related Work PR #24346 changes Markdown table column allocation in parallel. This PR is intentionally limited to list-item readability and history wrapping; both branches touch `codex-rs/tui/src/markdown_render.rs`, so a small merge conflict may need resolution depending on merge order. |

TUI config cleanup: MCP inventory (#24265)
## Summary The TUI `/mcp` inventory flow should reflect the app server’s MCP status response. It was also joining those results with the TUI process’s local `config.mcp_servers`, which can diverge once MCP state is owned by a remote app server and cause stale local command, URL, status, or empty-state details to render. This change removes the local config join from the app-server-backed inventory renderer. The TUI now renders directly from the existing `mcpServerStatus/list` payload and treats an empty status response as the empty MCP inventory state. ## Known limitation The existing `mcpServerStatus/list` payload does not include disabled-state or disabled-reason fields. To preserve the current app-server API, this PR does not try to infer that state from client-local config. If remote `/mcp` needs to show disabled/reason details again, that should come from app-server-owned status data in a follow-up. Related to #22914, #22915, and #22916. |

Add SubagentStop hook (#22873)
# What <img width="1792" height="1024" alt="image" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/8f81d232-5813-4994-a61d-e42a05a93a3e" /> `SubagentStop` runs when a thread-spawned subagent turn is about to finish. Thread-spawned subagents use `SubagentStop` instead of the normal root-agent `Stop` hook. Configured handlers match on `agent_type`. Hook input includes the normal stop fields plus: - `agent_id`: the child thread id. - `agent_type`: the resolved subagent type. - `agent_transcript_path`: the child subagent transcript path. - `transcript_path`: the parent thread transcript path. - `last_assistant_message`: the final assistant message from the child turn, when available. - `stop_hook_active`: `true` when the child is already continuing because an earlier stop-like hook blocked completion. `SubagentStop` shares the same completion-control semantics as `Stop`, scoped to the child turn: - No decision allows the child turn to finish. - `decision: "block"` with a non-empty `reason` records that reason as hook feedback and continues the child with that prompt. - `continue: false` stops the child turn. If `stopReason` is present, Codex surfaces it as the stop reason. # Lifecycle Scope Only thread-spawned subagents run `SubagentStop`. Internal/system subagents such as Review, Compact, MemoryConsolidation, and Other do not run normal `Stop` hooks and do not run `SubagentStop`. This avoids exposing synthetic matcher labels for internal implementation paths. # Stack 1. #22782: add `SubagentStart`. 2. This PR: add `SubagentStop`. 3. #22882: add subagent identity to normal hook inputs. |

Sync TUI thread settings through app server (#23507)
Builds on #23502. ## Why #23502 adds the app-server `thread/settings/update` API and matching `thread/settings/updated` notification. The TUI already lets users change thread-scoped settings such as model, reasoning effort, service tier, approvals, permissions, personality, and collaboration mode, but those updates need to flow through the app server so embedded and connected clients observe the same thread state. This is a rework (simplification) of PR https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/22510. It has the same functionality, but the underlying `thread/settings/update` api is now simpler in that it no longer returns the effective settings as a response. Now, clients receive the effective settings only through the `thread/settings/updated` notification. ## What Changed This updates the TUI to send `thread/settings/update` whenever those thread-scoped settings change and to treat the RPC response as the authoritative acknowledgement. It also routes `thread/settings/updated` notifications back into cached session state and the visible chat widget so active and inactive threads stay in sync after app-server-originated changes. The implementation is kept to the TUI layer: settings conversion and merge logic live under `codex-rs/tui/src/app/thread_settings.rs`, with dispatch/routing hooks in the existing app and chat widget paths. ## Verification I manually tested using `codex app-server --listen unix://` and then launching two copies of the TUI that use the same local app server. I then resumed the same thread on both and verified that changes like plan mode, fast mode, model, reasoning effort, etc. are reflected "live" in the second client when modified in the first and vice versa. |

Add SubagentStart hook (#22782)
# What `SubagentStart` runs once when Codex creates a thread-spawned subagent, before that child sends its first model request. Thread-spawned subagents use `SubagentStart` instead of the normal root-agent `SessionStart` hook. Configured handlers match on the subagent `agent_type`, using the same value passed to `spawn_agent`. When no agent type is specified, Codex uses the default agent type. Hook input includes the normal session-start fields plus: - `agent_id`: the child thread id. - `agent_type`: the resolved subagent type. `SubagentStart` may return `hookSpecificOutput.additionalContext`. That context is added to the child conversation before the first model request. # Lifecycle Scope Only thread-spawned subagents run `SubagentStart`. Internal/system subagents such as Review, Compact, MemoryConsolidation, and Other do not run normal `SessionStart` hooks and do not run `SubagentStart`. This avoids exposing synthetic matcher labels for internal implementation paths. Also the `SessionStart` hook no longer fires for subagents, this matches behavior with other coding agents' implementation # Stack 1. This PR: add `SubagentStart`. 2. #22873: add `SubagentStop`. 3. #22882: add subagent identity to normal hook inputs. |

app-server-protocol: remove PermissionProfile from API (#22924)
## Why The app server API should expose permission profile identity, not the lower-level runtime permission model. `PermissionProfile` is the compiled sandbox/network representation that the server uses internally; exposing it through app-server-protocol forces clients to understand details that should remain implementation-level. The API boundary should prefer `ActivePermissionProfile`: a stable profile id, plus future parent-profile metadata, that clients can pass back when they want to select the same active permissions. This also avoids schema generation collisions between the app-server v2 API type space and the core protocol model. Incidentally, while PR makes a number of changes to `command/exec`, note that we are hoping to deprecate this API in favor of `process/spawn`, so we don't need to be too finicky about these changes. ## What Changed - Removed `PermissionProfile` from the app-server-protocol API surface, including generated schema and TypeScript exports. - Changed `CommandExecParams.permissionProfile` to `ActivePermissionProfile`. - Resolve command exec profile ids through `ConfigManager` for the command cwd, matching turn override selection semantics. - Updated downstream TUI tests/helpers to use core permission types directly instead of app-server-protocol `PermissionProfile` shims. |

app-server: use permission ids and runtime workspace roots (#22611)
## Why This PR builds on [#22610](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/22610) and is the app-server side of the migration from mutable per-turn `SandboxPolicy` replacement toward selecting immutable permission profiles by id plus mutable runtime workspace roots. Once permission profiles can carry their own immutable `workspace_roots`, app-server no longer needs to mutate the selected `PermissionProfile` just to represent thread-specific filesystem context. The mutable part now lives on the thread as explicit `runtimeWorkspaceRoots`, while `:workspace_roots` remains symbolic until the sandbox is realized for a turn. ## What Changed - Replaced the v2 permission-selection wrapper surface with plain profile ids for `thread/start`, `thread/resume`, `thread/fork`, and `turn/start`. - Removed the API surface for profile modifications (`PermissionProfileSelectionParams`, `PermissionProfileModificationParams`, `ActivePermissionProfileModification`). - Added experimental `runtimeWorkspaceRoots` fields to the thread lifecycle and turn-start APIs. - Threaded runtime workspace roots through core session/thread snapshots, turn overrides, app-server request handling, and command execution permission resolution. - Kept session permission state symbolic so later runtime root updates and cwd-only implicit-root retargeting rebind `:workspace_roots` correctly. - Updated the embedded clients just enough to send and restore the new thread state. - Refreshed the generated schema/TypeScript artifacts and the app-server README to match the new contract. ## Verification Targeted coverage for this layer lives in: - `codex-rs/app-server-protocol/src/protocol/v2/tests.rs` - `codex-rs/app-server/tests/suite/v2/thread_start.rs` - `codex-rs/app-server/tests/suite/v2/thread_resume.rs` - `codex-rs/app-server/tests/suite/v2/turn_start.rs` - `codex-rs/core/src/session/tests.rs` The key regression checks exercise that: - `runtimeWorkspaceRoots` resolve against the effective cwd on thread start. - Profile-declared workspace roots are excluded from the runtime workspace roots returned by app-server. - A turn-level runtime workspace-root update persists onto the thread and is returned by `thread/resume`. - A named permission profile selected on one turn remains symbolic so a later runtime-root-only turn update changes the actual sandbox writes. - A cwd-only turn update retargets the implicit runtime cwd root while preserving additional runtime roots. - The protocol fixtures and generated client artifacts stay in sync with the string-based permission selection contract. --- [//]: # (BEGIN SAPLING FOOTER) Stack created with [Sapling](https://sapling-scm.com). TUI: split history cells into focused modules (#22704)
## Why `codex-rs/tui/src/history_cell.rs` had become the dumping ground for transcript rendering: the shared trait, common helpers, and the concrete cells for messages, plans, MCP/search, notices, patches, approvals, session chrome, and separators all lived together. That made small transcript changes require reopening a very large file and made ownership less obvious. ## What changed - Replaced the monolithic `history_cell.rs` with a `history_cell/` module tree organized by concern. - Kept the existing `crate::history_cell::*` surface stable through re-exports in `history_cell/mod.rs`. - Moved the existing render coverage into `history_cell/tests.rs`. ## Reviewer notes - This PR is intentionally mechanical in mature — existing code and tests moving into files that match their concern. - The snapshot files under `codex-rs/tui/src/history_cell/snapshots/` moved with the extracted test module. `insta` resolves these unnamed snapshots relative to the source file that declares them, so this is path churn only; snapshot contents were not updated. - The small non-mechanical seam edits are limited to split fallout: sibling-module visibility for shared cell containers, moving approval-specific exec-snippet helpers beside approvals, fixing the separator module path, and keeping a couple of existing test helpers reachable after extraction. |

Add compact lifecycle hooks (started by vincentkoc - external contrib) (#19905)
Based on work from Vincent K - https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/19060 <img width="1836" height="642" alt="CleanShot 2026-04-29 at 20 47 40@2x" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/b647bb89-65fe-40c8-80b0-7a6b7c984634" /> ## Why Compaction rewrites the conversation context that future model turns receive, but hooks currently have no deterministic lifecycle point around that rewrite. This adds compact lifecycle hooks so users can audit manual and automatic compaction, surface hook messages in the UI, and run post-compaction follow-up without overloading tool or prompt hooks. ## What Changed - Added `PreCompact` and `PostCompact` hook events across hook config, discovery, dispatch, generated schemas, app-server notifications, analytics, and TUI hook rendering. - Added trigger matching for compact hooks with the documented `manual` and `auto` matcher values. - Wired `PreCompact` before both local and remote compaction, and `PostCompact` after successful local or remote compaction. - Kept compact hook command input to lifecycle metadata: session id, Codex turn id, transcript path, cwd, hook event name, model, and trigger. - Made compact stdout handling consistent with other hooks: plain stdout is ignored as debug output, while malformed JSON-looking stdout is reported as failed hook output. - Added integration coverage for compact hook dispatch, trigger matching, post-compact execution, and the audited behavior that `decision:"block"` does not block compaction. ## Out of Scope - Hook-specific compaction blocking is not implemented; `decision:"block"` and exit-code-2 blocking semantics are intentionally unsupported for `PreCompact`. - Custom compaction instructions are not exposed to compact hooks in this PR. - Compact summaries, summary character counts, and summary previews are not exposed to compact hooks in this PR. ## Verification - `cargo test -p codex-hooks` - `cargo test -p codex-core manual_pre_compact_block_decision_does_not_block_compaction` - `cargo test -p codex-app-server hooks_list` - `cargo test -p codex-core config_schema_matches_fixture` - `cargo test -p codex-tui hooks_browser` ## Docs The developer documentation for Codex hooks should be updated alongside this feature to document `PreCompact` and `PostCompact`, the `manual`/`auto` matcher values, and the compact hook payload fields. --------- Co-authored-by: Vincent Koc <vincentkoc@ieee.org> |

feat(tui): add raw scrollback mode (#20819)
## Why Granular copy is particularly difficult with the current output. Part of it was solved with the introduction of the `/copy` command but when you only need to copy parts of a response, you still encounter some issues: - When you copy a paragraph, the result is a sequence of separate lines instead of one correctly joined paragraph. - When a word wraps, part of it stays on the original line and the rest appears at the start of the next line. - When you copy a long command, extra line breaks are often inserted, and command arguments can be split across multiple lines. https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/0ef85c84-9363-4aad-b43a-15fce062a443 ## Solution Now that we own the scrollback and we re-create it when we resize, we have the opportunity of toggling between the raw text and the rich text we see today. - Add TUI raw scrollback mode with `tui.raw_output_mode`, `/raw [on|off]`, and the configurable `tui.keymap.global.toggle_raw_output` action. - Render transcript cells through rich/raw-aware paths so raw mode preserves source text and lets the terminal soft-wrap selection-friendly output. - Bind raw-mode toggle to `alt-r` by default, with the keybinding path toggling silently while `/raw` continues to emit confirmation messages. ## Related Issues Likely addressed by raw mode: - #12200: clean copy for multiline and soft-wrapped output. Raw mode removes Codex-inserted wrapping/indentation and lets the terminal soft-wrap logical lines. - #9252: command suggestions gain unwanted leading spaces when copied. Raw mode renders transcript text without the rich-mode left padding/gutter. - #8258: prompt output is hard to copy because of leading indentation. Raw mode renders user/source-backed transcript text without that decorative indentation. Partially or conditionally addressed: - #2880: copy/export message as Markdown. Raw mode exposes raw Markdown for terminal selection, but this PR does not add a dedicated export/copy-message command. - #19820: mouse drag selection + copy in the TUI. Raw mode improves terminal-native selection of output/history text, but this PR does not implement in-TUI mouse selection, highlighting, auto-copy, or composer selection. - #18979: copied content is divided into two parts. This should improve cases caused by Codex-inserted wraps/padding in rendered output; if the report is about pasting into the composer/input path, that remains outside this PR. ## Validation - `just write-config-schema` - `just fmt` - `cargo test -p codex-config` - `cargo test -p codex-tui` - `just fix -p codex-tui` - `just argument-comment-lint` - `cargo test -p codex-tui raw_output_mode_can_change_without_inserting_notice -- --nocapture` - `cargo test -p codex-tui raw_slash_command_toggles_and_accepts_on_off_args -- --nocapture` - `cargo test -p codex-tui raw_output_toggle -- --nocapture` - `git diff --check` - `cargo insta pending-snapshots` |

Enforce animations = false for screen readers (#20564)
## Why Issue #20489 calls out that animated TUI affordances can be noisy for screen-reader users. Codex already has `tui.animations = false` as a reduced-motion setting, but some live activity rows render spinner-style prefixes in that mode. These were relatively recent regressions. We have also regressed this pattern more than once by adding new spinner/shimmer callsites that do not think through the reduced-motion path, so this PR adds a small guardrail while fixing the current surfaces. ## What changed - Omit the live status-row spinner when animations are disabled, so the row starts with stable text like `Working (...)`. - Render running hook headers without the spinner prefix when animations are disabled, while preserving shimmer/spinner behavior when animations are enabled. - Centralize TUI activity indicators in `tui/src/motion.rs`, with explicit reduced-motion choices for hidden prefixes, static bullets, and plain shimmer-text fallbacks. - Route existing spinner/shimmer callsites through the central motion helper, including exec rows, MCP/web-search/loading rows, hook rows, plugin loading, and onboarding loading text. - Add a source-scan regression test that rejects direct `spinner(...)` or `shimmer_spans(...)` usage outside the central module and primitive definition. - Add focused coverage that reduced-motion active exec rows are stable, status rows start without a spinner, running hooks omit the spinner, and MCP inventory loading stays stable. - Update the one affected status-indicator snapshot; the existing detail tree prefix remains unchanged. ## Verification - `cargo test -p codex-tui` |

Remove core protocol dependency [2/2] (#20325)
## Why With the local model layer and app-server routing in place from PR1, this PR moves the active TUI runtime onto app-server notifications. The affected pieces share the same event flow, so the command surface, session state, bottom-pane prompts, chat rendering, history/status views, and tests move together to keep the stacked branch buildable. This PR also removes the obsolete compatibility surface that is no longer used after the migration. The proposed protocol-boundary verifier layer was dropped from the stack; enforcing that final boundary will be simpler once `codex-tui` no longer needs any `codex_protocol` references. This PR is part 2 of a 2-PR stack: 1. Add TUI-owned replacement models and extract app-server event routing. 2. Move the active TUI flow to app-server notifications and delete obsolete adapter code. ## What changed - Rewired app command and session handling to use app-server request and notification shapes. - Moved approval overlays, request-user-input flows, MCP elicitation, realtime events, and review commands onto the app-server-facing model surface. - Updated chat rendering, history cells, status views, multi-agent UI, replay state, and TUI tests to use app-server notifications plus the local models introduced in PR1. - Deleted `codex-rs/tui/src/app/app_server_adapter.rs` and the superseded `chatwidget/tests/background_events.rs` fixture path. ## Verification - `cargo check -p codex-tui --tests` - Top of stack: `cargo test -p codex-tui` |

Add PermissionRequest hooks support (#17563)
## Why We need `PermissionRequest` hook support! Also addresses: - https://github.com/openai/codex/issues/16301 - run a script on Hook to do things like play a sound to draw attention but actually no-op so user can still approve - can omit the `decision` object from output or just have the script exit 0 and print nothing - https://github.com/openai/codex/issues/15311 - let the script approve/deny on its own - external UI what will run on Hook and relay decision back to codex ## Reviewer Note There's a lot of plumbing for the new hook, key files to review are: - New hook added in `codex-rs/hooks/src/events/permission_request.rs` - Wiring for network approvals `codex-rs/core/src/tools/network_approval.rs` - Wiring for tool orchestrator `codex-rs/core/src/tools/orchestrator.rs` - Wiring for execve `codex-rs/core/src/tools/runtimes/shell/unix_escalation.rs` ## What - Wires shell, unified exec, and network approval prompts into the `PermissionRequest` hook flow. - Lets hooks allow or deny approval prompts; quiet or invalid hooks fall back to the normal approval path. - Uses `tool_input.description` for user-facing context when it helps: - shell / `exec_command`: the request justification, when present - network approvals: `network-access <domain>` - Uses `tool_name: Bash` for shell, unified exec, and network approval permission-request hooks. - For network approvals, passes the originating command in `tool_input.command` when there is a single owning call; otherwise falls back to the synthetic `network-access ...` command. <details> <summary>Example `PermissionRequest` hook input for a shell approval</summary> ```json { "session_id": "<session-id>", "turn_id": "<turn-id>", "transcript_path": "/path/to/transcript.jsonl", "cwd": "/path/to/cwd", "hook_event_name": "PermissionRequest", "model": "gpt-5", "permission_mode": "default", "tool_name": "Bash", "tool_input": { "command": "rm -f /tmp/example" } } ``` </details> <details> <summary>Example `PermissionRequest` hook input for an escalated `exec_command` request</summary> ```json { "session_id": "<session-id>", "turn_id": "<turn-id>", "transcript_path": "/path/to/transcript.jsonl", "cwd": "/path/to/cwd", "hook_event_name": "PermissionRequest", "model": "gpt-5", "permission_mode": "default", "tool_name": "Bash", "tool_input": { "command": "cp /tmp/source.json /Users/alice/export/source.json", "description": "Need to copy a generated file outside the workspace" } } ``` </details> <details> <summary>Example `PermissionRequest` hook input for a network approval</summary> ```json { "session_id": "<session-id>", "turn_id": "<turn-id>", "transcript_path": "/path/to/transcript.jsonl", "cwd": "/path/to/cwd", "hook_event_name": "PermissionRequest", "model": "gpt-5", "permission_mode": "default", "tool_name": "Bash", "tool_input": { "command": "curl http://codex-network-test.invalid", "description": "network-access http://codex-network-test.invalid" } } ``` </details> ## Follow-ups - Implement the `PermissionRequest` semantics for `updatedInput`, `updatedPermissions`, `interrupt`, and suggestions / `permission_suggestions` - Add `PermissionRequest` support for the `request_permissions` tool path --------- Co-authored-by: Codex <noreply@openai.com> |

Add codex_hook_run analytics event (#17996)
# Why
Add product analytics for hook handler executions so we can understand
which hooks are running, where they came from, and whether they
completed, failed, stopped, or blocked work.
# What
- add the new `codex_hook_run` analytics event and payload plumbing in
`codex-rs/analytics`
- emit hook-run analytics from the shared hook completion path in
`codex-rs/core`
- classify hook source from the loaded hook path as `system`, `user`,
`project`, or `unknown`
```
{
"event_type": "codex_hook_run",
"event_params": {
"thread_id": "string",
"turn_id": "string",
"model_slug": "string",
"hook_name": "string, // any HookEventName
"hook_source": "system | user | project | unknown",
"status": "completed | failed | stopped | blocked"
}
}
[codex] Improve hook status rendering (#17266)
# Motivation Make hook display less noisy and more useful by keeping transient hook activity out of permanent history unless there is useful output, preserving visibility for meaningful hook work, and making completed hook severity easier to scan. Also addresses some of the concerns in https://github.com/openai/codex/issues/15497 # Changes ## Demo https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/9d8cebd4-a502-4c95-819c-c806c0731288 Reverse spec for the behavior changes in this branch: ## Hook Lifecycle Rendering - Hook start events no longer write permanent history rows like `Running PreToolUse hook`. - Running hooks now render in a dedicated live hook area above the composer. It's similar to the active cell we use for tool calls but its a separate lane. - Running hook rows use the existing animation setting. ## Hook Reveal Timing - We wait 300ms before showing running hook rows and linger for up to 600ms once visible. - This is so fast hooks don't flash a transient `Running hook` row before user can read it every time. - If a fast hook completes with meaningful output, only the completed hook result is written to history. - If a fast hook completes successfully with no output, it leaves no visible trace. ## Completed Hook Output - Completed hooks with output are sticky, for example `• SessionStart hook (completed)`. - Hook output entries are rendered under that row with stable prefixes: `warning:`, `stop:`, `feedback:`, `hook context:`, and `error:`. - Blocked hooks show feedback entries, for example `• PreToolUse hook (blocked)` followed by `feedback: ...`. - Failed hooks show error entries, for example `• PostToolUse hook (failed)` followed by `error: ...`. - Stopped hooks show stop entries and remain visually treated as non-success. ## Parallel Hook Behavior - Multiple simultaneously running hooks can be tracked in one live hook cell. - Adjacent running hooks with the same hook event name and same status message collapse into a count, for example `• Running 3 PreToolUse hooks: checking command policy`. - Running hooks with different event names or different status messages remain separate rows. ## Hook Run Identity - `PreToolUse` and `PostToolUse` hook run IDs now include the tool call ID which prevents concurrent tool-use hooks from sharing a run ID and clobbering each other in the UI. - This ID scoping applies to tool-use hooks only; other hook event types keep their existing run identity behavior. ## App-Server Hook Notifications - App-server `HookStarted` and `HookCompleted` notifications use the same live hook rendering path as core hook events. - `UserPromptSubmit` hook notifications now render through the same completed hook output format, including warning and stop entries. |
